Nintendo should port Majora's Mask to Wii using TP's engine

I'd buy this in a second if all they did was give it a facelift. Not enough people got to experience the greatness of this game - it was released late in the N64's lifetime and not many people had a N64 to begin with.

Imagine an Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask disc with Twilight Princess graphics (or better)...

That's what I keep saying about Sony. Give Final Fantasy VII with PS3 graphics. I'd buy that system in an instant.

Zelda and MM were great games. Since the Wii will be on disc format, I'm hoping there will be a decent soundtrack with some decent voiceovers. Here's to wishing...

That's a very good idea. When Majora's Mask came out I was temporarily disinterested in gaming. I would love to play this game without having to stare at the muddy graphics.

Well, considering this game will be on the VC (or, one would assume), why would they waste development time on it instead of a new game? I'm not saying I wouldn't love to see some old games remade, but I think personally I'd rather see some new games.

yeah, I know... it's just that N64 games are so freaking ugly they are almost unplayable nowadays - and there were some excellent games released for the system. I think it's the same reason why most NES games haven't stood the test of time but SNES seem to. I don't know.

too bad there aint a program that just converts it to modern graphics, now if nintendo could make that program it would be sick

now that's just silly. the reason they probably won't do it is because it would take a lot of time and money, which would best be better spent on other, new projects. You can't just press a "better gr4phix" button.

Yeah, there's been a real gap in terms of how games look over the past few generations. 16 bit games never had to strive for realism, so they hold up great. The few games that did experiment with mo-cap (looking at you Mortal Kombat) look hillariously bad. Nintendo sort of walked a fine line with the N64 in that the games were cartoony on ocassion, but you still had something like Goldeneye that looked pretty realistic for the time. I'm amazed at how well some N64 games have held up over the years.

As for PSX games not holding up, my guess is that it's not just the graphics having aged poorly but also the fact that the games have load times. You're probably able to forgive one, but not the other.

I think Javery's point was that not enough people played it on the 64 and remaking it at the beginning of the Wii life cycle would allow more to enjoy it. Besides you can't tell me that a new MM would be the worst game that Nintendo had in development.

You do have a point. NES games do not hold up like SNES, and I N64 games do not hold up like GC games--at least when it comes to graphics. I'd be happy to see a Zelda All-Stars compilation at some point, even if they were simply distributed over VC. Just a bit hesitant because I don't want to see Nintendo go too far that way mining old games like they have on the GBA.

It seems like Hollywood always has a remake of some old TV show or movie in the pipeline--why isn't this true for the video game industry? I've always wondered why we don't see more old platformers, RPGs, and adventure games updated for modern hardware. I would think these re-releases would be a chance to mine easy sales and bump up the value of a particular piece of intellectual property.

Can anyone with a good perspective on the industry shed some light on this question?

My brother, who's been a huge Resident Evil fan since '96, bought REmake on release day and played the hell out of it for a couple days. Then he just kinda stopped playing it. His explanation was "I don't know...the graphics were nice, but after the novelty of that wore off, I just thought 'Hey, I've played this before'..". That might explain something. Then again, he's the type that wouldn't play through a game more than once or twice....but, he's also the type that'd watch the same movie or episode of a show a million times.

That's exactly the kind of easy sales I'm talking about.

The Majora's Mask remake would be something I'd be all over, though I'm 80% certain that I would play the game until the point where I thought, "Yeah, the graphics look pretty, but I've played the hell out of this game," and then toss the game aside.

I'll grant that I'm not getting the play value out of the re-make that I should, but Nintendo would still rack up an easy sale. It would be hard for me to pass by an updated classic (like FF3 for the DS) without making an impulse purchase.

That would be great and all, but.. bring it to DS. With IX.

As for Majora's Mask, it's one of my favorite games (more than overrated OOT, come and get me) and I would love to see if reintroduced to a new generation of gamers. But I think it would be best for a VC download with some new features or higher resolution or 16:9 widescreen. See, Nintendo's not like Square -- they can still make a good game so they don't need to whore out their old ones to people who remember a time when they didn't suck.

Well, if you think about it, MM on the VC will have better framrate, resolution and smoother textures so I'll be giving it another shot (I only got to the 4th doungeon before I had enough of the muddy-ness)
