Nintendogs: Ladies and gentlemen, we have a phenomenon

Scobie

CAGiversary!
I was out at a couple of stores yesterday and noticed that all three versions were completely sold out at both places. Then I went to Gamerush to chat with the geeks and trade some stuff and noticed they only had one copy of Chihuahua left.

It's exceptionally rare to see games sell out like that around here this time of year. Haven't seen Nintendo-related game movement like this since the DS launch week, and even then it was easier to find games.

Anybody seen sales figures yet? In particular, any that link Nintendogs purchases to system sales?
I never thought I would see the day when a life simulator game was a best seller.
I guess you must have missed when The Sims came out, about 5 years ago?
I guess you must have missed when The Sims came out, about 5 years ago?
hey, hey, he's trying...

All the stores around here have already gotten tons of them traded in. They said people (kids?) get tired of it after a month.

The Game doesn't have alot of replay value. Its a very fun and addictive game for the first month, But it doesn't have the lasting apeal like Animal Crossing did. I hope if Nintendo makes a Nintendogs 2 they find some way to get more replay value out of it.

Eh, I got bored with mine after a week (and I'm being generous with that). But my wife likes it, so it's all good. But I agree, Animal Crossing it ain't.

i pretty much forgot about my dog after a week too. Now I feel too bad to even turn it on

Funny... my area is completely sold out, period. And I'm not giving up my version to appease some little kid. o_o

I bought it on the day it was released, played it for a week, and became quickly bored with it. For some reason I feel sorry for the dogs, even though they're not real heh. It just gets boring after you obtain three dogs and obtain a bunch of items. Then you start to notice most of the items are pretty much the same.

I'm still in denial about that, I refuse to believe that POS sold 10,000,000 copies.

And that makes it untrue! Thank you post-modernism!
i never saw the appeal of this game, it just seemed really dumb to me but i guess to each his own.
Same here.

I thought the technology of this game was incredible... but that wasn't enough for me to play it longer than 1 hour.

Nintendo forgot to make the game fun and enjoyable. ;o
And that makes it untrue! Thank you post-modernism!
don't forget cultural relativism!

You say success, I say failure to entertain in more harmonious way!

I usually fed mine in the morning and night and turned it off. It started feeling like a chore and now Im on my 3rd day and I dont even wanna see if its run away yet

I play it with my kids . . . if if weren't for them I wouldn't have it.

But we play it sparingly and have enjoyed it.

My Golden has won the disc championship a few times.

I've been training a Yorkshire to win the agility trials . . . kinda fun.

Me three.

The game is intended for casuals and nongamers, sort of like a Neopet. I find it somewhat entertaining, but I don't own a dog in real life and i'm not rushing to teach my pet 1,000 tricks and get every item. I pick it up once every 2 days or so, depending how busy I am with life or other games.

I'm still enjoying it since day 1 of its release. I can see how most people have a hard time sticking to playing it after a week... oh well.

I can't remember what post it was, but about a few months before release of the game I predicted basicly what the OP said... so, uh, yeah... and I did say my words were marked.

I'm still playing several times a day since it was released. I'm a sucker for stress-free collect-a-thons, but I'll admit it's not for everyone.

For me, I'm glad to see that such a unique and inspired game is getting so much attention. Also glad that this is driving DS sales. More systems sold = more games made!

Even those of you who hate Nintendogs will be reaping the rewards of its phenom status down the road.

I like my dogs, but I don't play with them as much as I used to. I turn it on to feed them and watch them play with the soccer ball, maybe do a few competitions to earn food money and then go back to Advance Wars

I turned mine on for the first time in like 3-4 weeks today. To my suprise, my dogs were all still there! They were extremely dirty and famished, but still there.

Did your trainer points drop?

I've only found one thing about the game that pisses me off... you can't put your dog in the hotel unless you have another dog! I don't really want another dog at the moment... I'm trying to get the Jack Russell Terrier, and until I do, I'll stick with my Lab Yoshi.

Would really be nice to be able to put it in the hotel for a while so I can focus on other games without worrying about losing stuff.

I can honestly say I think Nintendogs sucks. I was kind of in denial for a little while, but today when I went to trade in some DS games at Gamerush my girlfriend said, "You should trade in that dogs game, it's boring." Then I realized it's been about two weeks since I've played it, and before that all I did was feed the dogs before bed and turn it off.

I'll probably trade it in tomorrow, I need to get Castlevania anyway.

Ha ha, I got bored of Animal Crossing too, maybe these kind of games aren't for me? I kept Animal Crossing for so long because of the NES games. I'll still probably buy the DS version though because it's online.
I never thought I would see the day when a life simulator game was a best seller.
I hope this makes Nintendo more courageous in their releases next time and bring over games like Oeundan and other Japanese hits. They should not underestimate the US/North American audience.

But I'm afraid Oeundan still has no chance to make it even though I think it would bea hit. I mean if DDR is so popular I dont see why this game wouldnt be either.

You might check reviews before you do that, last I heard they yanked the NES games from the DS version.

sadly...i too was in denial about me loving nintendogs. I think it was because they were so cute and lifelike. They did a really good job bringing them to life...it's just, the game sucks.

The problem with that is Oeundan was a Japanese hit. I know, its sad. Such a good game and it didnt even sell well in its homeland. :whistle2:( I think most of it's sells game from import sells.

this is exactly why the revolution will be a success. the titles are so quirky and appealing that people will buy them just to see what the big deal is.

but its only been a few weeks and i think its a safe bet to say more than 50% of nintendog owners have gotten over the hype and quit wasting their time with this. and thats the problem with nintendo now. these ds (and revolution) games are so interesting that they make you buy the game, but so shallow that after a week you're bored of them.

traditional gaming isnt dead regardless of what nintendo wants you to believe.

I have 16 DS games (17 if you count Metroid First Hunt) at the moment and of those the only one I can honestly say that the "Gimmick" wore off of was Nintendogs. Last I checked in on Sparky he snapped at me and turned to growl at me before he drank some water while fleas flew off his back. I said "Kiss my ass Sparky!" and my wife now tends to him on her new DS. :D

Everything else (Well, except that damn Metroid demo) I play on a regular basis depending on my mood. I don't find them to be shallow at all or at least any worse than any other game could be on any other system. And if you think about it are basically the same types of games you could play on any system except that the DS has the added function of a stylus and a microphone to include NEW types of gaming or ways to play them. I've played PLENTY of games since the Intellivison days that I've bought either on hype or genuine interest and put down after awhile due to what you would call shallowness. One of the biggest examples I can think of recently in terms of HUGE hyped up releases that ended up being a real snore and shallow would be Doom 3. I played through it and came out completely empty, emptier than Nintendogs, and I know I am not alone on that one.

I do agree Nintendogs is one of these games that you mention but I kind of knew that going into it, as I am sure many people did. Games like this are nothing new (Cases in point, Tamagotchi, Seaman or Dogz).

Luckily I got it free with that EB trade in, all it cost me was a couple crappy GBA games two of which I got free.

I think my bottom line here is, this isn't just Nintendo but can be said of all the gaming industry but since Nintendo seems to be doing things differently it can be a bit more easier to single them out which I don't think is fair. And BTW, I am an equal oppertunity gamer and not trying to sound like a fanboy, hell my favorite "Console" was/is the C64.

The release date of Nintendogs was August 22. So your "couple of weeks" theory is blown right there. It has been almost two months since the game has been out. How many other DS (or GBA for that matter) games last for two months of regular play? Not many.

Since you seem to have some insider information from Nintendo, can you tell me which of the Revolution games are shallow? I have yet to see any solid information about any of the games so it is interesting that you know about the gameplay already.

Regardless of whether 50% (a number you clearly pulled out of your ass) of Nintendogs owners returned their copies, Nintendo still made money on each sale. As Scobie stated above, that is good for Nintendo and the DS.

The Nintendo rep came in yesterday at the local EB Games, and put a new Nintendogs cartridge in the demo DS unit. This one only runs in 'Bark Mode' and has a counter on the main screen that shows how many owners have linked with it.

Upon linking in 'bark mode' you are greated by an audio recording of Hailey Duff, introducing her dog Bentley. Bentley came bearing a gift (Pair of Star Sunglasses - These ultracool sunglasses are all the rage with celebs and their pampered pups). Upon ending the 'bark mode' connection I was informed I also had unlocked 'Urban Living' in the Interior Decorator section. I think I would have also unlocked Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in the kennel (The type of pup Bentley is), but I already have it unlocked.

Hailey Duff also shows up in your friend list.

Would've been better if they would let you play with Miyamoto's dog Pik... but what're you gonna do? Still glad to see Nintendo is making some efforts to promote this game.

I got Nintendogs on launch and I still play it to this day. However, it's in small bursts of less than 20 min a day. It's not that Nintendogs is shallow, it's just paced to played in small bursts of 20 minutes or so for the rest of your life, much like N's other endeavors, Animal Crossing.
