No Cussing Week...
lol, fuck that.
Saw that one coming

Not a bad thing, though. I like the spirit of it. I already don't cuss, so I guess I'll be informally taking part in this?

Although, I have to LOLZ at the part where the kid says he formed this group when he noticed in 7th grade all his friends started cussing, which his parents didn't allow. Isn't that kind of the point in cussing? Most parents don't allow it, kids do it to be "rebels".

They do it now because they're not supposed to, if they weren't they would do it because it would simply be part of the language.

Agreed.

I curse like a sailor - or, rather, like the 7-year old that discovers the thrill in saying "shit" and therefore peppers it into virtually every other word in his conversation like I earn a nickel everytime I say it.

I wouldn't mind a little more decorum myself. Things like this disgust me:

But I say that knowing I'm the kind of person whose conversation is peppered with that same word.

I'd have to put effort into controlling my language hour-by-hour first. Going a week without cursing from my current state is akin to asking a 50-year old chain smoker to run a marathon.

Yeah, I agree about his point about needing more civility.

I swear a lot, but I wouldn't wear a shirt like that etc. And there's a difference between saying "that's fucking awesome!" and saying "fuck you!"

Civility is determined more by the intent/meaning of how words are used, not by what words are used IMO. The shirt is offensive (more tacky to me really) because of the nature of the message, not because it has fuck on it.

But I've always been one who's thought it silly to have "bad" words. A word is a word. What matters is how you use the words. I mean is the shirt really less offensive/tacky if it said "I wouldn't have sex with you for practice."?

To some it is, just because fuck is a "bad" word, and that's just silly to me.

Cursing has to be wielded like a sharp knife, not a sledge hammer to hit people over the head with like that shirt.

Durkheim. ;)

It's important to have a dividing line - even if, yes, it seems silly - or more arbitrary.
law is just another arbitrary line of collectively agreed-upon behaviors that violate the sacred and become the profane.

;)
True. But at least with serious crime there's clear harm being done, and not just some prude getting offended because someone said a bad word. :D

Fair point in regards to mala prohibita offenses though.

I highly doubt the abilities of some of the posters here to carry on a conversation without resorting to a bunch of shaq-fuing.

Well, we can.

But honestly, at that point, what's the point?
id put him on the same level as weird al
That is a fucking insult. MC Chris has talent and makes good music. Weird Al is just a goddamn gimmick that little kids love.

Agreed. I also agree with context beinfg a factor. For example, around my dad I might say, "I'm tired of all the damn problems at work." However I would never direct cursing at him saying. "What is your damn problem dad?" I draw the line with that. My parents never treated me like that and I won't do that to them.

Exactly. It's a Tactical Knife, not a Tacitical Nuke.

I seldom curse just because I want the moments that I do to mean something. If my friends or family see me cursing they know to stop and listen. When my sister and brother-in-law got a $1000 electric bill from AEP last month I went off dropping f-bombs and my friends looked at me like I lost my mind, lol. They were all like, "Mark, I've never seen you that mad before!" That's the point, I don't like showing that side unless it is for good reason. If you run off cursing all the time it is really hard for me take that person seriously.

The only time I stepped up cursing was when I played basketball in college and that was anger directed at myself more than someone else. If I missed a shot or screwed up a play, it was a simple matter to say "shit" or "damn it" to myself. In public I don't curse out of civility and respect for those around me.

Also, thanks for using the terms "cursing" instead of "cussin". I hate that country-fied version.

Nice idea, tons of originality and lulz from all the people that elected to swear in their comments. I love CAG. You guys are just so goshdarn witty.

And in other news, I'd like to get Epic Beard Man's comments on the no cussing week proposal. If he says it's good, I say it's good.

Je me Christ du toi.

Championship levels of irony. The Olympics are for winter sports. Not your high horse ridin'. You got 2.5 years to wait for that.

Guess it's not too early to train though.

Are you saying I don't have you guy's sponsorship and support! Ahh shucks!

I mean, don't be a fucking cunt. Now do I fit in? Oh please, oh please!

Get the fuck out of my internet. Right now.

In this thread: People who teach their kids to condescendingly attack others and then pairing it with false bravado.

I'm w/ bezirk here. As soon as I read the OP, I just knew we'd be subject to a litany of "naw, fuck that goddamn shit, man" posts.

I see the point, but that doesn't make it clever. It's not.

Of course it isn't clever, it's no more clever or original than referencing the epic beard man (or posting on the internet about how something was not clever or original).

Was it meant to be clever?

Or is a cry of "Cocks!" just a condensed form of, "This is kind of silly. Also, his first name is McKay. That's a last name, people. Why am I the only one outraged by this?"
