No Gameboy/Gameboy Color support on DS STILL pisses me off
 Don't taunt me so! :(( I can't believe you got it that cheap! Totally agree about Picross being the best GB game ever... *sigh* memories...

I don't quite understand the problem OP talks about re the GBASP and battery...I suppose it will die at some point... but that's on down the line... why worry about it now? And why unload a GBA now when it has "some value" ($30? $40? what?)... isn't it worth that relatively small amount of money to enjoy your oldschool GB games for a couple of years?
I already have a GBC that'll probably last longer than the DS or GBA. I want this for the future. I want this is so I can play these games 20 years from now. The GBA won't provide that, so there was no reason for me to keep it. I'm glad I got rid of them while I could get something for them.

I never got to play Picross unfortunately . It looked really interesting. I remember that was kind of during the Gameboy's dead period mid-90s, and was the only insteresting game for quite a long period.

I also am slightly sad that the DS doesn't play GB/GBC games, since I have a bunch. My approach was to get a Gameboy Player and a Hori controlle and play them there. I will pick up a backlit GBA SP once they get cheap. They will sell replacement batteries for years, and if I still really care about these games in 2015 then I'll have to resort to emulation.

However, since the GBA and SP use the ARM processor, and GB/GBC uses the old Z80, I understand their technical reasons for removing it.

The thing that most disappoints me about the DS functionality is the inability to use GBA multiplayer or Gamecube linking features. If the DS gave you wireless link cable functionality that would be awesome. Maybe the latency issues throw this off, but there are so many multiplayer GBA games that it's sad that they don't even try to support it. And I still have never used any of the linking features of my Gamecube games, and wish I could check this out with my DS.

So Wolfpup, I'm mostly with you, but I actually think that the lack of full GBA functionality is worse than the lack of GB/GBC support.

Yeah, that would really stink if you used those. I hardly ever have so it's not an issue for me. I would have kept my link cable and copy of Pac Man Vs. if the DS supported that though. (That is a REAAAAALLY fun game, and I don't like Pac Man.)
Can the GB Player play GB/GBC games? I wonder if they'll release a GB player type dealy for the Wii...
Yes. I tried Super Mario Bros. DX, Dragon Quest I & II, etc. on GBC and they worked fine. Sometimes, the screen was stretched really weird, in Super Mario Bros. DX.

About this thread, I personally don't care. I only bought a DS and GBC (sold my original GB years ago). IMO, it's the best way to go, since I can play GBC/GB games on the GBC, and then I can play DS/GBA games on the DS. I didn't really like the GBC or GB much (other than Super Mario Land 1 and 2), so that's another reason it isn't a problem.

Hahaha, sorry!

Maybe I shouldn't mention that it has a hidden mode called WARIO'S PICROSS with its own set of puzzles... ;)

Not sure if you heard, but there is FINALLY a new Picross coming for DS!
I saw it at Nintendo World 2006 back in early November and it should be out early next year.
Looks like they dropped the Mario characters tho. :(

Why would the DS need to support the Gameboy? That's like saying DVD players should be able to play Laserdiscs, and Toaster Ovens should Microwave things.

The DS wasn't created as a replacement to the Gameboy. It's well known forever that the DS would not play GB/GBC games.

If you want to play the games, 1] Don't sell your previous systems, 2] Buy a GBA/GBA SP, 3] Use the GCN Gameboy Player.

So? That doesn't mean I have to like it.

Already covered. The GBASP is a brick without it's battery, so it's lifespan is limited. (Actually the same is true of the DS.)

You don't have to like it... But being surprised by it still is another thing.

BTW... How long do SP batteries last, anyway?

I wasn't surprised by it, I hate it, hence the thread :)

Lithium batteries are generally said to have a two year life span. In reality they're usually still usable after that (depending on how heavily they've been used), but they do have a limited shelf life. Unfortunately neither the SP nor the DS work without a battery-so once Nintendo quits making them the systems are bricks.

While the SP and DS won't work without a battery installed, they will work with a completely dead battery while plugged into the wall. The battery is just needed to complete the circuit. It's probable you can complete the circuit without the battery, but I have no desire to try without a spare system.

Another option you have is to buy a GBA w/Afterburner installed off of Ebay. I have one I did the install on myself, and prefer it to the SP due to the button layout being easier on my hands.

Honestly, as another poster mentioned, the biggest issue with older titles is with battery-powered save states. My FFL2 battery already died several years ago. It's only a matter of time before they all go. The only permanent solution is emulation. I was fortunate enough to have access to a GBC backup unit a few years ago, so I made legal backup copies of my carts and save states. I'm good to go if I ever get my hands on a DS flash cart.

You know, I keep hearing that, but no one has answered the question as to if the units will work while plugged in with a battery that doesn't hold a charge. Because, if they do, the GBASP would last forever - only tied down.

You're 100% sure about this? If so, this is FANTASTIC news! I've been getting really worried my whole DS library was pointless.

If the DS can emulate GBC games, Nintendo really should just support GBC/GB games through emulation. That would be great.

Regarding the backup batteries, don't at least some GBA games use flash instead, and like all DS games?
