Hey guys, I've been reading about the Transformers universe on wikipedia, and it seems to have a great back story, so I want to gather up some videos and literature on the universe so I have something to do over the summer other than work! Can anyone suggest/provide any insight as to what shows/books/graphic novels are important for learning about the universe? Mind you I cannot read any language any other English, so Japanese manga's certainly won't help me haha. Thanks guys!

Well obviously you can't go wrong with the 80's cartoon show. I'd recommend going to HMV, Bestbuy or somewhere similar to buy the seasons. Amazon also has it but it comes in volumes and I know for a fact you can simply buy each season at once instead of purchasing parts of seasons.

Next, I'd consider watching the original 1986 Tranformers movie. This movie introduces many new transformers into the Transformers universe. Check it out here.

If you want to talk about how to watch this movie so that it's in an "order", I'd recommend watching the first 2 seasons, watch the movie, then watch the last 2 (3 if you count the 5th) seasons. Here's a little more information on the TV series back story that I found on Wikipedia.

Also, I'd recommend when looking for these shows, look for it under "original Transformers" or "Generation 1" so that you're watching the original stuff because there have been many remakes and versions since then.

This should help start you off in my opinion and a majority of Transformers fans have only known the universe through the TV series and 1986 movie.

hey thanks for the reply coreyvf! I noticed on Amazon.com they have a re-release of the Transformers G1 1st season for $24.99, I may get goomba to grab that for me! I'll have to hunt around for the other seasons, unfortunately...thanks for the help, and if anyone else has any insight, feel free to post!

Oh it goes without saying, Lone. Alas, I have watched the Beast Wars series from beginning to end, and I need some more Transformers fix in time for Transformers 2!

well I'll most likely ignore the newer series that debuted after Beast Machines, unless a Transformer guru states otherwise; I'll probably pick up the G1 seasons 1-5 and the 1986 film, and continue to poke around for some graphic novels that are well-received. Hell, maybe I'll hunt around for a cheap set of Beast Wars on DVD :D

Want comics? Read The War Within. Arguably the most beloved Transformers comic book series of all time. Also, that article is a tad out of date, earlier this year IDW Publishing released the entire series in one paperback for a bit over $20. However, this may be a tad bias, since it is the only Transformers comic book series I own entirely.

If you're solely looking to get in the Movie-verse stuff there are series for that, be it The Movie Prequel, The Movie's adaptation itself, or heck, even a sequel to the movie in The Reign Of StarScream.

In terms of shows well, sadly most of the franchise is out of print in North America, but I'd recommend:

Generation 1: I'd go US Only, since if you include the Japanese G1 Universe you'll need a region free player, and a lot of alchol. Rhino Entertainment release is out of print, but Shout Factory will start re-releasing the show starting in June. The G1 20th Anniversary Movie DVD by Sony is out of print, but easily obtainable.

Beast Wars/Beasties: Well you know. Released in three, or four boxsets by Rhino Entertainment, now out of print.

Beast Machines: Not neccesairly a good Transformers show, or even a sequel to Beast Wars/Beasties, but still a very good show on its' own. Same as above, except two sets.

Transformers Armada - Retooled version of G1, that takes a while to get on. Don't watch if you don't care for Japanese Animation styles. Same as above.

Transformers Cybertron - A series that can be taken as a sequel to the previous Energon (don't watch this one), and Armada series, or as a standalone project. Released in one complete boxset which is in print. Again, Animephobes need not apply/

Transformers Animated - Another retooling of G1, with many homages to G1. Generally heralded by many as a return to form in terms of writing, in terms of art design, well... The three part pilot episodes are available on DVD, as well as DVD releases for the first and second seasons. Both in print. Season three is currently airing on YTV.

Only watch Transformers Energon if you wish to watch the 20th Anniversary show, because it is not a very good series (as its' plot ends at about 20 episodes into a 52 episode series). Released in one boxset. In print.

As well, it may not interest you, but hey, Canada's largest Transformers convention, TransformersCon/TFcon will be held April 24th - 25th in Toronto at the Doubletree International Plaza Hotel at 655 Dixon Road. For more information check www.tfcon.ca I've never gone there, I always kind of regret not going. Oh well.

Well don't I feel useful :D

Wow Dragon, thanks a boatload for that info! Pretty much exactly what I was looking for! I don't mind Japanese art style at all, actually (I'm quite fond of DBZ/Gundam Wing/Escaflowne), so maybe Armada merit's a gander! I have the first volume of 'War Within', but I'll be grabbing the omnibus since it's not very expensive and finding the other volumes would be difficult!

Being that I was born in the 70s, I was of the perfect age when the Transformers emerged. I would recommend the original cartoon series as has been suggested. There is also a comic book series of the same era which I also thoroughly enjoyed. I don't know if you can find the comic series though. I wonder where my comics are ...

hey thanks for the help guys, I found this great website which chronologically lists the graphic novels, so I'll be quuite busy this summer; some of the story arcs sound awesome (All Hail Megatron sounds particularly intriguing). I'll also try and scrounge up the original series on DVD, and if I am feeling ambitious I'll muscle through the Unicron Trilogy.
