CAGiversary!
hey guys ..
i am about to pull the trigger on a PS3
but i was wondering about the best way to go...
will the new 40 gig be backward compatible ?
that is why i decided to create this poll ..so please help me and many others who are in the process of buying a PS3 ..
So which one of the the 4 versions is the most backward compatible ?
thanks a lot

if u already have a ps2, get a 40gb save urself $100.
but if u dont get the 60gb at walmart u get a free game and blu-ray movie and blu-ray remote.

I think Gamestop is doing a deal with the 60gb where you can pick a free game such as Resistance, Heavenly Sword, and Lair. Why not trade in your PS2 towards that bundle if you're interested in one of the games available? It works out to the same basic cost since you'll likely buy a game at the same time as picking up the 40gb anyway.

60gb: $499 - $30 trade in value of PS2 = $469 (includes a free $60 game and full PS2/PS1 backward compatibility)

40gb: $399 + $60 game = $459 (includes Spiderman 3 blu-ray but no PS2 backward compatibility)

agreed!

and now it comes with free extras and a ps2.

Ok since this is a noob thread i'll try to hijack it and ask a few noob questions. I've recently decided to get a PS3 using my Gamerush credit. I am planning on getting the 40gb Spiderman 3 bundle when it comes out. I already have a Slim PS2 so not worried about BC and Motorstorm is only $33 used at EB.... That makes the the 80gb $67 than the 40gb and used motorstorm. Is the larger HD really ever needed? I won't be storing music or videos on it just using it for gaming... What would you use the 2 extra USB slots for? Card reader on the 80 is just for pics and stuff I assume, i've got no need for those..... The 40 is a good choice for me I think..... ANything I overlooked? I'm a late arrival to the Sony next gen train. Thanks :D

With all due respect, I have to disagree. I think 20 gig is where it's at. You only lose wireless, flash readers and 40 gigs of space...silver trim if you really want to get picky. For $100 saved you can put in a bigger (and faster) hard drive and just run a cheap cord to the machine. I wish I got it instead of the 60.

Sounds like it. I haven't used my card reader once although I distinctly remember reading about someone on this board's girlfriend who loved to share pictures with it. I've got the 60 GB and haven't even made a dent in it. Shivering Isles will help with that and I'm going to start throwing more DLC on there. Demos (besides Ratchet) don't take up much space. You can swap out the drive pretty easily (and cheaply).

Simple answer to OP:

60 or 20gig both have 100% backward compatibility

80gig has 85% backward compatibility

40 gig has 0% backward compatibility

Get the 60, or 20 used if you're on a budget

I bought a 100GB refurb hard drive from geeks.com for ~$45 six months ago and it is still working like a charm.
