Not All U.S. Troops in Iraq Are Pro-Bush

CAGiversary!
From the Christian Science Monitor.

Apparently some of the troops are getting sick and tired of being thrown in harm's way by Chicken George, who has little regard for them or their safety.

WASHINGTON – Inside dusty, barricaded camps around Iraq, groups of American troops in between missions are gathering around screens to view an unlikely choice from the US box office: "Fahrenheit 9-11," Michael Moore's controversial documentary attacking the commander-in-chief.
"Everyone's watching it," says a Marine corporal at an outpost in Ramadi that is mortared by insurgents daily. "It's shaping a lot of people's image of Bush."

The film's prevalence is one sign of a discernible countercurrent among US troops in Iraq - those who blame President Bush for entangling them in what they see as a misguided war. Conventional wisdom holds that the troops are staunchly pro-Bush, and many are. But bitterness over long, dangerous deployments is producing, at a minimum, pockets of support for Democratic candidate Sen. John Kerry, in part because he's seen as likely to withdraw American forces from Iraq more quickly.

"[For] 9 out of 10 of the people I talk to, it wouldn't matter who ran against Bush - they'd vote for them," said a US soldier in the southern city of Najaf, seeking out a reporter to make his views known. "People are so fed up with Iraq, and fed up with Bush."

With only three weeks until an Oct. 11 deadline set for hundreds of thousands of US troops abroad to mail in absentee ballots, this segment of the military vote is important - symbolically, as a reflection on Bush as a wartime commander, and politically, as absentee ballots could end up tipping the balance in closely contested states.
Wow US troops can think for themselves?

Did you almost fall over Dennis?
Of course they can think for themselves. Don't assume that I'm not for the troops. My wife and I have a friend headed to Afghanistan, and another already in Iraq.

But Republicans would like you to believe the troops are in lock-step support of their policies, and it just ain't so.

Really? I believe that? Not based on the conversations I have at my reserve unit.

And thanks I leave for Baghdad 7 November.

I am going to be helping the Iraqi's rebuild their court system. Its called, as I understand it a JSLP, Joint Services Legal Position. Apparently they had a legitimate system for many years except they never bothered to use it, they just shot people. So they idea will be to try to help build thier legal system to the point where they use and actually believe they can have legal redress.

It will be located in and around Baghdad. I don't know if I'll be going as far as Mosul. My predecessor did land convoys but tried to do as much by helicopter as possible.

I am actually filling out the paperwork for it today. Try finding a current 1058-R on the internet to fill out. Very annoying.

And yes, I have lots of SPF 6,0000.

One of the reasons for this is the way the Army, Army Reserves and National Guard sold themselves for the last 20 years. They sold themselves as a vocational program, college ptogram as opposed to an organization whose main purpose is to kill people and break things. Many people not under combat arms but in support roles that signed up for the GI bill and to learn computers, supply chain etc. find themselves actually getting shot at or under threat of personal attack get disillusioned.

In the case of these people? Blame marketing and the way Army life was sold to them.

True, but how else are the Reserves going to entice people to join to fill their quotas? They just can't come out and say "Join the Army where you shoot people, blow things up, and get shot at yourself!"

No and this is a legtitimate issue, particularly with the stop loss. Howver, my unit, and I DO NOT believe we are representative, is having huge sucess at recruiting.

One thing I don't understand people saying is "well the war on terror has made things different." How so? Be it the Russians, Chinese, or violent Islamofacists - you still might get deployed. I think it boils down that for many of the people whatever the threat is or would be, it would be characterized as "oh this is new!"

Which means they never were serious about it to beging with.

CTL

They're still meeting recruiting quotas. Fortunately the people now know the reality of what they're getting into and the risks.

If you're joining the reserves or NG now and don't realize you could end up in harms way you're doing the world a favor by submitting yourself for a Darwin award.

I like how you're subtly implying that it's the wussies who don't want to be shot at are the ones against Bush. It's not like the heroic, macho, fearless soldiers could realize they were sent into a war on false pretenses with no exit strategy, or could they?

I can't wait to hear the change in your tune when you get back.

Or perhaps you won't be coming back?

Either way, you're about to learn the folly of your pitiful outlook on life. I doubt you'll find it so easy for the poor to "exist for your amusement" when you see them getting shot in the street.

Hideous as I find you, I hope you do make it back. Another dead fool does nothing to correct the trends this nation is sliding into.

Okay, I'm calling bullshit on talk like this.

I disagree with CTLesq a good part of the time, but I cannot imagine anyone wishing him anything less than the best when he's putting himself in harm's way for us.

If you can't be decent, shut the hell up.

Since I'm not wishing him any harm, but merely a change of perspective, I call bullshit on your call of bullshit.
If you can't be decent, shut the hell up.
Tell that to those who could care less if people around the world live or die, as long as it doesn't affect their life personally.
Are you sure he is telling the truth?

This is the fucking dumbest thing ever posted here.

No shit that not all 150,000 troops in Iraq are for Bush. I wouldn't be either if I see my friends being killed because of him.

I agree. What a fucking asshole.

Like PAD said, a lot of people who go to war and suddenly hate Bush is usually because they signed up to get college money, and they don't care about fighting for their country. Now combine that with the fact that nobody likes war or putting themselves in harms way and you see the full picture.

I can't stand it when MTV sends their wannabe reporters over there to only interview the guys who don't wanna fight and hate Bush cause of it.

CTLesq, if you are going over there then best of luck to you, and make sure to kill some terrorist assholes before coming back.

Lastly, this thread is pointless and a waste of space: everyone with a brain and common sense knows that our soldiers think for themselves.
