I currently have a Compaq presario SR1520NX. I bought this in July 2005 and it is still running great, after i threw in a couple of rams and a graphic card

the other day my dad's friend gave us a dell dimension 4600, which is a few years older than my compaq but if im not mistaken it seems it has slightly better specs than my compaq

my question is do you guys recommend i should switch my compaq for the dell? even if the dell is a few years older?
 
AMDs in those days were generally much better than the Pentium 4s, so no, there is not much difference at all between the 2 PCs. You'd just be wasting your time transferring stuff from one old PC to another old PC, both of which are beyond the average lifespan. You could always just keep one as a backup when the other fails.

Unless you want to want to become an entry level tech. Playing around with a spare PC is a great way to learn some much needed skills (installing Windows, transferring files, finding/installing drivers)

On to your question though, no, don't bother switching. You'll notice no real difference.
 
heheh yeah i know, its pretty old. i have no reason to switch to new desktop if this one isnt broken...yet. plus i dont game at all. only thing i use mainly is surfing web, homework, email.

what if i transfer my rams and graphic card to the dell? will i notice a significant difference? (yeah i know the dell and compaq are basically the same)
 
The HP's video card is integrated, so you couldn't put that in the Dell if you wanted to.

The RAM looks compatible, but I'm not sure an extra 512mb would do much to make it worthwhile to make the HP unusable.

I agree with Spanky, find some use for the Dell instead. An XBMC box seems like a good choice, if you watch anything digitally.
