Not so Cheapass Alcohol Discussion

Oddly.... my favorite sipping Tequlla is Cabo Wabo.... yes That Cabo Wabo. Just so damn smooth, especially perfectly chilled. Tried all levels of Patron and to me, this is my favorite. Now if you want to roam onto scotch, anything less than 18 years is swill for the most part. it's like drinking vodka, you've got Stoli (or ketel I suppose) or you've got aristocrat... one or the other.

And for those who like Jager... have you tried Ouzo? Not fan of the taste so much, but the effects of stumbling through Greece singing songs in German and pissing on roadsigns is a strong memory to keep for life.

Ouzo, or "Raki" in Turkey, is a vile drink drunk by horrible, horrible men...
I can't say I know too much about alcohol. The stuff I know well is the average college student stuff like Jager and various vodkas. As far as rum, I reccomend Appleton if you can get it. What does everyone reccomend in the way of whiskey (besides Jack, I want something worth drinking)?

To myke: being the experienced beer patron that you are, what's your opinion of hard ciders? I'm hooked on Woodchuck, both the Pear and the Granny Smith. Also, I'd like to hear any opinions you have of mead.

I would like to say this though: I advise everyone in this thread to go find a bottle of Barenjager right now. It's basically honey liquor, and it's absolute fucking sex. Throw out every bottle of cold medicine you have and just buy a bottle of this stuff. Two shots will clear your headache and sinuses faster than you can even comprehend.

Also, tequila is devil piss and you should just stop drinking it, now.
Anyone who responds to your "what whiskey to drink" with an actual suggestion shouldn't be taken seriously. OTOH, if they ask you "what kind of whiskey" deserve the key to the city. Being from Kentucky myself, I'm a shame on my family because I don't care for Bourbon. I don't dislike it, but I don't buy it either.

I prefer Irish Whiskeys; Bushmills is a little less sweet and has a touch more alcohol flavor than Jameson, my more or less generic favorite. I know there are dozens, if not hundreds, of small batches available where they use only fresh water from the MacClannahan creek with century-old malts or some shit. But like I said, I'm more of a beer drinker, less an alcohol aficionado.

Bourbons are more bold than Irish Whiskeys, and I *think* they need to come from a certain part of the US (KY) to be a genuine bourbon (like a wine can't be a bourdeaux or cote du rhone, for instance, if it isn't from that region of France, no matter the similarities). It's a sweet whiskey as well, but a more earthy, molassess kinda sweet. I suppose I like old fashioneds (bourbon, tonic, sugar, various fruit juices, shaken and garnished with fruit), but only when it's fucking HOT out.

Then you have scotch whiskeys, which, IMO, are like Irish whiskeys but with a far smokier flavor. I think that they must use a special kind of cask when fermenting; well, that's redundant, as they'll all tell you they use special casks, but only scotches have the smokiness. Dewar's features this in a "punch you in the cock" level of flavor, and it's very off-putting. Walker, as others have suggested, is more mild, although I can't help but think that it also has hints of peat moss (and I'm not making that up) in the flavor.

This is, of course, ignoring southern whiskeys (Southern Comfort, which is the Boone's Farm of whiskeys, Southern Mash styles, like Jack Daniel's for instance, or Canadian whiskeys like Seagram's). I've lumped these together because (1) I dunno much about them and (2) I'm going to stereotype people who drink one kind as those who drink them all. These are all crazy sweet whiskeys, the kind you mix with soda instead of sip and enjoy. They aren't bad, necessarily, but they all share similarities that, by themselves they aren't anything to write home about, but they're very palatable and useful in mixes, whether that be drinks or cooking. SoCo doesn't apply there as far as I'm concerned, and it's pretty much the calling card of a fucking idiot woman who's going to be the high maintenance drunk for the night.

And I'm ignoring aging, malts, cask conditioning, and lots of other things. You'll find what whiskey you want, and for what purpose. Just try them all. Except for SoCo. Something I've never tried (but made consistently for a woman when I tended bar) was a Wild Turkey (did you know that was regarded as FINE AMERICAN BOURBON in Japan?!?!?) shot, in a large espresso cup, with a double shot of espresso and one sugar packet. I can't say I think I'd like it (and I'm a coffee snob too), but it's worth a suggestion.

I second Barenjager; I wonder how it compares to Drambuie, in terms of what it's made from, how it's made, and what it's flavor is like. Don't let a sissy drinker near it, though. You'll end up breaking a sweat/losing a friend trying to take care of them for the night.

Apossum, I was thinking cuarantra y tres was closer to curacao in texture and flavor, but, hey, even greatness can be wrong from time to time. ;)

BTW, I don't know much about mead, but I do know this: (1) it's as varied from bottle to bottle as wine, so if you don't like it at first, don't give up, and (2) don't ever go cheap on it, you're guaranteed to hate it. This doesn't mean buy a $50+ bottle, but read up on it first. Some taste like weak, honey-sweet white wines, while others are very bold and spicy. Research online, pick a brand you want to try, determine if you'd rather have it steaming hot and steeped in spices, or if you want it cold and straight; base your decision from how you want it served. Or, if you're lucky, perhaps a local bar serves it. Unlikely though.

Come on! As a fellow Kentuckian, you should know that bourbon comes from Bourbon County, Kentucky! The home of Jim Beam and more importantly Maker's Mark, which Zewone endorsed earlier. Oddly enough, Bourbon County is a dry county! They can make all the bourbon they want there, but they have to sell it somewhere else. It's worth the drive to visit the distilleries in northern Kentucky.

Maker's Mark is my drink of choice. A Maker's Mark Manhattan is a good way to get a night rolling.

Sure it is. That's why I passed by the Jim Beam factory on my way to high school every day - in Cincinnati, OH! ;)

I wasn't aware that it was stringent enough to apply to one country. Thanks for the info, though it's not surprising that it's a dry county. The majority of rural KY is dry.

Drambuie tastes like shit. We have bottles upon bottles of that crap.

I usually get stuck with cheap vodka (like Schmirnoff), cheap rum (like Bacardi), or cheap whiskey (like JD). When I drink, its usually bought for a large mass of people and I have no say in what gets bought.

If you like cinnamon try some Goldschlager. Its the stuff that has gold flakes in it. I mentioned earlier that it goes well with jager for a Starry Night. If you like Baileys, try out St Brendans. Its cheaper, but to me its much better tasting that Baileys. If you like hazelnut, then Frangelico is really good.

Out of curiousity, has anyone ever tried Godiva liqueur? I'm really interested in trying the White Chocolate variety sometime

Well, Drambuie is a cordial, while Barenjager is not. They have VERY different textures, and I don't think drambuie should really be drank by itself.

Try adding a shot of drambuie to a caffe latte. You'll change your mind. Though, for a dose of heaven (coffee/booze drinkers), try a latte with 1/2 shot Chambord, 1/2 shot Creme de Cacao, and a splash of Tuaca. MMmmmmm!

Let me also add Frangelico and coffee to the list, as Snatch mentioned it. If you want to make some fucking fantastic green beans, pour frangelico into a white hot skillet with slivered almonds, add green beans, and steam. You'll get laid with a dish that good! (Well, if you feed them enough red wine).

Pretty uneventful, really, and a major letdown considering the brand association. Don't waste your money, because you won't be happy. OTOH, if you don't like drinking, but like getting drunk, you'll have a helluva time beating Starbucks (yes, them!) coffee and cream liquor.

The irony of all my pretentious booze knowledge? I'm so broke I know it's gonna be a High Life weekend.

To try and awnser your search for good rum Daphatty the best i've had is Ron Zacapa Centenario. I don't really drink alot of the good stuff (not even near my unemployed-ass budget) but my friend and his family goes to Guatemala fairly frequently and he brough back a bottle and man, I was blown away how smooth it was. It's defintaly the only liquor that I've felt right drinking straight;)

I dont drink coffee :p

Not really. I'm short and young enough that I would be even shorter if I drank as much coffee as my parents. (Not that I should be drinking underage, but thats a different story :p)

Some of the best stuff I've drank is Italian in nature:

Stuff like Limonchello, Grappa and Sambuca.

I drink beer more often, but that's a different discussion.

My wife and I just made some Limoncello last weekend. Take a quart of vodka, add lemon or lime peels, and let it steep for a week or so.

Strain it, mix it with a simple sugar, mint, soda water and ice and you have one smooth-ass drink.

Good thread. I don't drink much anymore so I found it quite funny when my Grandmother gave me bottles of Absolute, Barcadi, Disaronno & Southern Comfort for Xmas this past year. I told her next year I want a gift card to the Betty Ford Clinic.
Wild Irish Rose

:)
Jesus, Wild I. Only the Red is good. Don't touch T-Bird, Night Train, or Cisco though. All I ever get for bum wine is Wild I and Mad Dog (the Orange Jubilee is actually very palatable).

Hey Myke, if you're really hard up, a 40 of Steel Reserve is only 2 bucks or less lol That'll save ya some dough
Honestly, if you want a really cheap ass route to good vodka, get some cheap shit and a britta filter. Run the vodka through a few times, and voila, you have a distilled vodka that is like Ketel One and such. Personally, I've never tried it, but know a few that have and claim that it works.
will have to try this, so ralphs of vons generic brand will taste much better?

Really all you're doing what the more expensive brands do, which is purifying or something of that nature. The actual word escapes me right now

Myself, I cannot for the life of me drink something straight and stop from gagging afterwards; so I swig a chaser down with swigging from the bottle (Orange Juice is my favorite).

For some reason, I am a Gin kind of guy. I don't gag on it as much and it takes less juice to go down. (I typically drink 1/2 - 2/3 a fifth of Seagrams Gin before I am moderately drunk.)

I don't know whats up with tanqueray gin, its doesn't taste as good as Seagrams. The odor itself could get me queezy.

I have been looking for a good straight up liquor (I do not like beer much). I have tried these items:

Jagermeister (I don't like the liquorice flavor of it)
Vodka (This is good, as long as it's Grey Goose or Skyy)
Gin (for $10, Seagrams does the job nicely)
Rum (I can only drink this if I mix it with an another carbonated beverage)

Also to let you know, the only time I have throwned up is on 100 proof Southern Comfort, so that is OUT of the question. (Other whiskey types welcome though).

Any suggestions?

Thanks :D

100 proof SoCo is something I stay away from. Hell SoCo all together. Lets just say that its Southern hospitality isn't all the comfortable the next morning. If you want some good whiskey thats really smooth and don't mind paying for it, Crown Royal is really good. Jim Beam is a personal favorite. Jack is just too expensive for what it is (though Green Label Jack is a lot cheaper and a lot smoother). In terms of Irish whiskey, Bushmills is great. Now if you want something to knock you on your ass, Powers Irish Whiskey is strong. I don't know squat about Scotch. I'm not a gin person so I can't suggest any other types that what you say you've had; though a few friends of mine swear by Bombay Sapphire

I myself love Jonny Walker Black. Never tried the higher labels though.

Some people shit on non-single malts but fuck those people.

P.s. Tanqueray Ten is quite good.

Don't drink and surf.

Carlos Rossi will give you massive shoulder muscles. When I was 16, my friends and I would partake in "bum jug curls." You thread your index finger through the handle on the neck of the bottle, bend your arm so as to cradle the bum jug in between your bicep and forearm, and proceed to lift the bum jug up, using your shoulder muscle as you drink.

Not that I think I ever did any significant lifting with those. Rossi was so fucking awful that bum jug curls were funny for about 2 minutes or 4 sips, whichever came first.

I love Carlo Rossi. Me and my friends sip on it "John Wayne style" (though I'm not even sure John drank it the way we do.)

Put your index finger through the handle and flip the bottle over so the jug is resting on your shoulder and your hand is upside down. Now tip the bottle towards your mouth and drink for as long as possible.

seems like everyone is talking about booze. buy hey, beer counts too. sure its cheaper, but when you pay 10 dollars for a four pack of La Fin Du Monde, you'll understand. Sure I could get 24 pabst for that price, but La Fin Du Monde is one of my new favorites. Also, Downtown Brown is another personal favorite running about 6-9 bucks (depending on sales) for a 6 pack.

edit: oh yeah, i have bombay saphire in the freezer right now.
tag for later... I wanna see what some people come up with. I'm not a big vodka fan, but I like Soju (only certain brands... I've got an emtpy bottle upstairs so Ill have to name it later)... Absolut sucks, and so does Skyy, but again... not a huge vodka fan.
Soju fan here as well. How does the pure stuff taste? I usually buy the cheap shit, not the blue bottle.

I can't drink hard stuff at all. My friends absolutely love Ron Diaz, but just taking a whiff of that stuff makes me gag. Seriously, if I drink liquor, there's very little doubt I'll have a hangover.

The last year or so I've stuck to just beer. I can actually enjoy drinking it, and you can get really cheap stuff...

How can people stomach hard stuff though? Some people I know live off of drinking it straight and it doesn't seem to affect them at all, at least taste-wise. I have a hard time drinking a mix of darn near anything!

You're probably drinking the wrong stuff... I know when I first started drinking, it was hard. I just kept trying new stuff until I found something I liked. Now I can pretty much stomach most stuff.. minus whiskey.

Vodka is always a good starting point.. can't even taste it if you make a white russian.

I swear, all this talk of liquor made me go and get plastered last night. 24 hours later I'm still feeling like shit because of it. I guess what I get for killing almost half of a half gallon of cheap vodka in one night...

i cant say ive ever done that... but the first time i drank the rossi i had no idea what i was getting into, and drank wayyyyy too much... one of the drunkest ive ever been...

Another favorite game while on the topic would be split between Beer Pong, or Edward 40 Hands... let me know if you want me to explain how to play either... but i dont want to get side tracked on the non hard alcohol games.... Can we make a drinking games thread?

Out here we call it 40's On the Lawn. I have no idea why.

Perhaps to compound the alcohol consumption with sweltering TX heat by forcing you to perform it outside.

So I'm in Atlanta on business this week. Is there anything available here in Atlanta that isn't elsewhere? I'm interested in quality alcohol of course. :D
