MS PR Response:
Xbox 360 Registers Its Biggest November Ever

November NPD results are in and Xbox 360 highlights include:

· Most successful November for Xbox 360 in U.S. with record games, console sales and online momentum (this follows the recent announcement of a record November in Europe)

· Continuing to widen its installed base lead over the PS3

· Outsold PS3 and PS2 combined

· Record-setting software attach rate leads the industry, now at 8.1

The Xbox 360 continues to sell at record levels this holiday season, registering the biggest Black Friday and most successful November in its history. Xbox 360 sold a record number of consoles for the month of November at 836,000 units. (November NPD data)

With $298 million in third-party game sales in November, the Xbox 360 has generated more revenue at retail for third-party publishers than the PS3 and Wii combined this generation. (November NPD data)

In addition to a 3:1 console sales lead over the PS3 during the Black Friday weekend, Xbox 360 finished the month of November with more than a 2:1 sales advantage over PS3. (November NPD data and Microsoft internal data) This momentum is happening around the world as well; Xbox 360 was the fastest-growing console in Europe for the month of November, with sales up 124 percent year-over-year, versus 43 percent for Wii and three percent for PS3. (Microsoft Internal data)

The gaming business is more than just console sales – strong software sales and a growing online community is critical to long-term success of a platform. Xbox 360 outperformed the PS3 on total software sales for November at $408 million, thanks to the best and broadest games line up. (November NPD data) Additionally, Xbox LIVE continues to outpace both competitors with more than 14 million active members online worldwide, with the average number of unique visitors rising 66% in the past year. (Microsoft internal data) As an example of its industry-leading growth, every day, more than 1.5 million transactions and nearly 4 million game sessions take place on Xbox LIVE. In total, 45 network and studio partners, as well as Netflix, offer more than 30,000 pieces of entertainment content over Xbox LIVE.

“We’ve created the optimal line-up of experiences this holiday season for families seeking lasting entertainment value, particularly during rough economic times in the U.S. and abroad,” said Don Mattrick, senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. “We have the largest library of games, TV and movie content and the most expansive and rewarding social experiences. We’re confident Xbox 360 will continue to drive record sales around the world this holiday and beyond.”

The Best New Content for the Broadest Audiences

Xbox 360 titles continue to dominate the industry’s top software spots, with three of the top ten games in November living on Xbox 360 (November NPD data).

· Xbox 360-exclusive “Gears of War 2” was this month’s #1 selling game with 1.6 million units sold. (November NPD data)

· “Call of Duty: World at War” for the Xbox 360 held the #2 spot, while “Left 4 Dead” rounded out the top 10 list at #8 (November NPD data)

· Xbox 360-exclusive “Fable 2” was honored to receive the Game of the Year Award during G4TV X-Play’s Best of 2008 Awards this week. In November, “Fable 2” sold 184,000 units, bringing its life to date sales to 974,000 units in the US. (November NPD and Microsoft internal data)

Nintendo PR Response
REDMOND, Wash., Dec. 11, 2008 – With more than 3.6 million combined systems sold in November, Wii™ and Nintendo DS™ set new hardware sales records, according to the independent NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. Lots of big names missing.

I can't believe you Wii.
I can't believe you.

I hope it doesn't beat PS2's record for sales in December, but I think it will. :(
Note that every non-Nintendo game in the top 10 is in the same genre.
I'm sure you'd see more if you took out the peripheral games.
I'm sure you'd see more if you took out the peripheral games.
So just Wii Fit then?

LBP is buried under there. I'm sure it needed release day sales from last month to chart here.
So just Wii Fit then?
And Wii Play.
And Wii Play.
It uses the Wii's normal controller setup, Wii Remote and Nunchuck. Those aren't peripherals, unless game controllers are peripherals now.
It uses the Wii's normal controller setup, Wii Remote and Nunchuck. Those aren't peripherals, unless game controllers are peripherals now.
You really consider it a game?
It's a controller combo that comes with the game.
That's the reason why it sells like crazy.

Why buy the remote and nunchuck seperately when you can get both and a mini-game for 10 bucks more? Easy sale at every store.
Ever parent I tell this to buys it instantly.

The "game" itself is extremely shallow. More so than most "mini-game" fests on Wii.
In that case I'd like to see sales of the 360 controller + Viva Pinata bundle.
I had no idea such a thing even existed. When did that come out? And how much?

And how long after people stopped caring about VP?

I don't think you can compare.

Just irks me that Wii Play is the top selling sku of ALL TIME because of the controller pack in.

I'd rather SM64 be on top. (gta sa.... ugh)
In that case I'd like to see sales of the 360 controller + Viva Pinata bundle.
Why just buy the controller when you get the game for $5 more!

The wii is the new 2600.
Shit Games.
Sells Like Crazy.

Once people realize the wii is a gimmick(and a Fad) we will have all these useless balance boards at the bottom of a landfill.

Sales != Quality.

What's more of a fad? The Wii, or people making comments like this?

So if there are 400 million people in the US, out of every 200 people 1 bought a Wii last month. Think about that because that includes everyone, grandparents, infants, etc. If you go to a 50,000 seat football stadium (moderate size) 250 people there bought Wiis last month.

So basically the PS2 has finally stopped selling above the PS3? Or was that the case in Oct to?
Well that will change if Sony changes the price to $99.

Its been 2 years now...still calling it na fad? A fad would be something like Sony - who is now becoming a joke in the videogame business. Everything is down from last year. PS3, PS2 and PSP. Where is Nintendo? On Top, laughing at the silly Sony. Stole Final Fantasy? We stole it all!

Definitely. Look at the generic ass shovelware for more proof. Some of the titles are so generic that you just motherfucking KNOW that they spent about 100 bucks making it.

The system is built on gimmicks and fluff, not gameplay. There are some exceptions of course, but most games are pure shit on Wii.

But this is just the opinion of a Nintendo fan from 1985 who feels betrayed. Don't mind me.

I actually wonder if Wii will be down next month. They had the biggest stockpiling ever for Black Friday, selling 800k that week alone. I've heard no such claims of another "biggest restock ever" for December.

This man speaks the truth.
Aside from Nintendo First Party, and Music games.
What else sells on Wii?

Wal-Mart plans on selling "hundreds of thousands" of Wii's this christmas.

I can play that game too.

Look at the top 10 again. Aside from Shooters, what sells on either the PS3 or 360?

I also don't like PS3 or 360 really. I hate equally. I'm getting tired of the generic FPS games and music games, personally. I'm becoming a niche gamer now.

Fine with me. :)

i think you've mistaken. the 360/ps3 is the 2600 and the wii is the nes. remember that ET was a big budget game for the 2600, which btw is something that only 360/ps3 systems are more then likely the cost for making a game that is big budget. this is why the hardcore is so confused. what, what, what?? praise the hardcore :applause:!

Plenty of 3rd Party Software has been sold that is not a shooter.
The thing is the majority of the games on 360 are shooters.
Its hard to make a game interesting to the masses without shoving a gun in your hand.

Mario Kart can you get us any non-top 10 per system data? I'm interested in Mirror's Edge numbers and whatever.

I know VGChartz is always off (they are getting a lot better though) but I'd like to see top 50 games for each system info released that month, especially the new releases.

So we can agree that a lot happens outside the top 10.

As soon as MS and Nintendo issue their press responses we can actually see who sold the most software overall.

I post everything I can get. No guarantees. 11-20 is pretty much always more interesting than 1-10 though. NPD sometimes posts top 20 rankings only a bit later on, no numbers.
MC vs DC bombed...damn.
I don't think anyone expected it to be in the all platforms top 10 and I'm sure it faired way better vs. expectations than other games (like Mirror's Edge) did.

Still laughing at the fact L4Dead outsold Resistance 2 despite the 360 getting a "PC port" ha!

Well thanks DMK, keep up the good work.

My fucking god. the wii, the ps3, the sony PR...this is delicious.

In the best case scenario, I can see the Wii being almost as good as the PS2, software quality-wise. Start the deluge of Jrpgs, action games, creative games, etc. etc. I hope that's what this translates to.

it's about time Ed Boon stopped getting rewarded for making shitty fighting games.

representing an increase of almost 100% from October

Really happy to see Left 4 Dead sold so well. I hope they support the 360 version much better than they did with TF2 last year on 360. We still play that game almost every night and have all the glitches and bugs memorized.. lol.

Congrats to Wii! 360! DS!

LBP, Mirror's Edge, Animal Crossing = BOMBA

I actually am pretty curious as to how Mirror's Edge did.
Dead Space did well, not exceptional, but it did well from what I read.
Can't say the same about ME but I'm sure it's there.

11-20 is where it's at.

People called Wii Music a bomb last month and after month it's come on strong. Sony really needs a $300 PS3, especially in this economy. It would've helped LBP and Resistance 2 sales. 3 360 games and 2 PS3 games in the Top 10 is kinda odd considering the difference in Hardware sales.

Oh, and Nintendo needs to start making real games again. Animal Crossing is not a core title, and this one isn't even a sequel really, more like a remake.

The price drop helped the 360 I guess?

Nothing can stop the Wii. The strange thing is, I've played through every Wii game I want without even owning the thing.

What the heck are MS and Sony going to do next to combat Nintendo?

I'm thinking some kind of forward-compatibility situation for their next consoles. Games that have two-sided discs or something to help get a sort of software commitment out of people.

I'll probably still be playing the PS2.

Nintendo is going to drop Kid Icarus, Zelda or something and the game will be over again...

Sony needs a $199 backward-compatible PS3 to fight back at this point.
This man speaks the truth.

Just because Wii games don't make the top 10 NPD doesn't mean that they don't sell well.
For example Boom Blox only sold 60,000 the first month, but after only a few months it had reached 450,000. How many 360 or PS3 games have legs like that?

Not only that, but for the first 20 months on the market for all three consoles the Wii sold more third party games then either the 360 or PS3.

You know Sony acts like they're in a race by themselves. So this holiday season, Sony chooses not to price drop, as they're probably waiting for March 09 to price drop. Regardless of the reason, you have just over 800k 360s sold, these customers aren't going to be in the market for another console, for at least another 6 months. People who wanted to migrate from the PS2, couldn't afford to move on to the PS3. Sony needs to work harder to push their consoles, its really unfair to Media Molecule that their game (LBP) didn't even reach the top 10, and to other devs have their games sell less because Sony isn't pushing the hardware.
