November NPD US Hardware/Software Sales
I just don't get it. At least in 2002 the PS2 had an AMAZING library of games. Well, maybe I do get it since I bought a Wii (and never ever play it).
I think most devs want to create beautiful showcases with their games and that's why there's a lot of amazing stuff on the 360/PS3.

They also want to make money too, so I hope that even begrudgingly, they'll start on Wii development.

Yeah I think that's a lot of it. A lot of devs want to do as much as they can with graphics and/or online play and the Wii doesn't allow that.

But it will be interesting to see if more stuff pops up on the Wii as it continues to expand it's marketshare lead. Of course the other problem is that third party games mostly sell like shit on the Wii which discourages them. But the problem with that thinking is there's just not much worth buying from third parties on the Wii--especially to a western gamer not interested in casual games or quirky Japanese games or shoddy ports of 360/PS3 games. So there's really no relevant benchmark for them to use.

I would argue that publishers want to create beautiful games. Developers are hired guns. Only the guys at the very top have a say, and even then, they have to be at a large company in order to not make compromises.

Thats certainly not to say that there arent developers that want to push technical limits (mostly western). They're also posting losses and missing forecasts all over the place.

Yeah, it's mostly western Devs like Infinity Ward, Bethesda, Bioware etc. was what I meant. And all I care about as I don't give two shits about 99% of Japanese developed games these days.

Hopefully they'll keep it up. As long as I'm getting great looking and great playing HD games in FPS and WRPG genres from these guys I couldn't care less what the Wii and other developers are doing.
11) Animal Crossing: City Folk (Wii) / Nintendo
12) Fallout 3 (Xbox 360) / Bethesda Softworks
13) Rock Band (Wii) / MTV Games
14) Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia (DS) / Nintendo
15) Guitar Hero World Tour (Xbox 360) / Activision Blizzard
16) Mario Kart (DS) / Nintendo
17) Guitar Hero World Tour (PS2) / Activision Blizzard
18) WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2009 (PS2) / THQ
19) Fable II (Xbox 360) / Microsoft
20) Madden NFL 09 (Xbox 360) / Electronic Arts

Rock Band 1 for Wii outsells Rock Band 2 on all platforms AND Guitar Hero World Tour for 360/PS3
I'm surprised at MK (DS) selling that many for being out for so long.

And I think RB1 for Wii because of the sheer qty of Wiis help it out... plus since v2 is out v1 is cheaper right?

Hardly anyone wants to purposefully make a shitty looking game. The question is how far are they willing to go with and without the push from their publishers.

We can even go beyond graphics to the gameplay concepts/game content. They have to sound like it would sell to the people who hold the power of the purse.

True, but for proven franchises like Call of Duty that are guaranteed it's less of an issue and the developers have more freedom.

So you see Infinity Ward just focusing only on 360/PS3 versions of their games, and Treyarch mainly focusing on those but having no problem shitting out crappy versions for the Wii/PS2.

If I was a developer, I'd want to make the best looking and playing game possible with the budget I had since that's what I enjoy to play. I have to imagine many in the industry are the same way and would prefer to have big budgets to make their games look and play the best possible.

Not all as there will always be indy developers who just want to make stylized games, or retro type games etc. of course.

So with 215K from last month, and 146K from this month, LBP is up to 350K in the US, and at least half a million worldwide.
That's alright, gotta grow.

I'm sure they'll make it to a million very early next year.
Niche development is supposed to gravitate towards the higher marketshare/lower dev costs platform.
Secondarily, digital distribution to get just the low dev costs part, if your game is small enough.

Some "SRPG"s - LTD Nov 07 US:

Disgaea - 135k (since has gone greatest hits)
Phantom Brave - 59k
La Pucelle Tactics - 75k
Growlanser Generations - 62k
Soul Nomad - 17k
Tactics Ogre (GBA) - 101k
Yggdra Union (GBA) - 12k
Fire Emblem GBA - 393k
Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones - 351k
FF Tactics Advance - 662k
Front Mission 4 - 118k
Front Mission DS - 28k
Suikoden Tactics - 76k

Final Fantasy Tactics, the original, hit 1.38M in Japan, but thats an outlier.
Man. DMK sure knows how to hit a man where it hurts. Especially on those Front Mission DS numbers.

ohh Look ... another horrible month for the PS3 ... which is down 20% from last year ... even worse the PS2 is down 60 and the PSP 25% ...

ohh lovely ... sometimes i wonder who exactly is running the PlayStation division of Sony and who i can call to get them for their EPIC FAIL !!!!!
Who are all these people that are still buying DSs?! Everyone in America must have two by now.
Probably the same people who are still buying PS2s.
The PSP looks like the best strategy for Sony to emulate with the PS3 going forward.
Cheap Hardware with the kind of easily accessible piracy that scares away 99% of your 3rd party publishers? AWESOME.

Even Sony hardly makes games for PSP anymore because all they do is get stolen.

Certainly not everything about the PSP analogue is desirable. I consider the PSP expensive in the handheld realm.

Sony's hands are tied though. They cant drop the price on the PS3.

First Strategy RPG released in america for the system.

Lots of FFT fans looking for a FFT-alike on a portable. Also the graphics of the GBA were still a big selling point at that time. I remember buying that game and really enjoying it.
How the hell did Tactics Ogre GBA sell 101,000 copies in this country?
If they rereleased tactics ogre for gba i would buy 20 copies and give them too all my gameplaying friends and family just so that they can see how awesome that game is.

Probably my #1 (?)rpg of all time. The ? is because i forgot the special category these tactics game go in.

Tactics Ogre is one of the slowest games ever. I actually played other games on my DS while playing that on my gba, during the enemy turns. Its solid, but not great or anything.

soooo...are you being sarcastic? cause it sounds interesting :p

Look at the attach rates!

Non-hardcore gamers are buying Wiis to play, I'm sorry, stupid-ass "games" like Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, Wii Music, and not much else. The actual gamers have chosen the 360 over the PS3. The PS3 is a disaster as we've known for over two years now. Blu-ray players are getting a lot cheaper, erasing one of the PS3's last advantages.

Gears of War 2 sold over four times as much as Resistance 2. LBP is a solid niche game but anyone expecting it to save the PS3 is going to be disappointed.

Of course Gears of War 2 sold more than Resistance 2. It is a franchise title. More importantly Left 4 Dead, which was released later in the month, is a new IP whose market is split between the PC and 360, also outsold Resistance 2. Look at the CoD:WaW numbers: the Xbox 360 version outsold the PS3 version by over 800,000 units. 70% of CoD5's sales are on the Xbox 360.
I would not be surprised if the people at Insomniac are talking about developing a new IP for multiplatform release. Or how about Media Molecule - could you imagine the sales LBP could achieve on the Wii? It would be huge. I don't care how big the Sony money hat is, a company's top people will get paid well anywhere - and they want the recognition that comes with selling a title that sells in the years top 10. That is something that is put on your cv. Just as important, a person's bonus is always based on revenue - a poorly selling game means a much smaller or no bonus.

Making any statements about the software purchasing habits without the full data is useless.

Making any statements about the software purchasing habits without the full data is useless.
And what would you call making such statements without a link to a credible site? Where did you get those numbers?

I'll say it again, bickering over attach rates etc. is a waste of time. All that matters is playing games you like, and buying the console(s) that has the most of those games.

Yes the hardware sales race seem pretty set this generation, yes it seems like the average 360 owner buys more games than the average PS3 or Wii owner (though flaws with simple attach rate make it hard to say that with much confidence).

But why does anyone really care? I get wanting the console to do well so it gets games you want from third parties.....but isn't the better solution to just buy the console that has the games you want rather than making arguments bashing the other consoles?

Just buy what has what you want to play, enjoy those games and cease this fanboy nonsense!

If only people had such common sense. :applause:

I don't know if the article is live yet, it's from the Gamasutra analysis. Matt Matthews posted it at GAF.

Fake edit: Oh, he didn't put it in his article, but the article will be up Monday. It's all estimates anyway.
Edit: I didn't put it into my article, but if we assume $500M of software revenue was Nintendo Wii (I believe this to be fairly close) and ASP for Wii software to be $45-$50, then that gives ... 10 to 11 million units of software for the Wii? Does that seem about right to y'all?

Also, looks like Xbox 360 sold around 6 million units. I don't recall the exact figure. The disparity between the Xbox 360 and the figure I estimated for the Wii seemed extreme ... but then look at the hardware figures. Oy.
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=13995153&postcount=3197

He revised his 360 number to 6-8 million in another post, but those numbers are what I would have estimated given the historical attach rates - 800k * 8 = 6.4 million, 2000k * 5.5 = 11 million.

Huh?? And Resistance 2 is what?

True, and Valve games don't do all that well on consoles. It's like people know their core platform is the PC.
