The National Security Agency said on Thursday it was investigating allegations that intelligence officials listened to personal phone calls from military officers, journalists and other Americans living outside the United States.
The comments followed media reports that U.S. agents intercepted calls from U.S. citizens using satellite phones to call friends and relatives back home even though they were clearly not terrorism suspects.
"Some of these allegations have been investigated and found to be unsubstantiated. Others are in the investigation process," the agency said in a statement.
The allegations, reported by ABC News earlier on Thursday, were made by two former military linguists who said calls from Americans, including aid workers, were monitored as part of the Bush administration's controversial surveillance program.
Intelligence operators routinely shared details with each other from the intercepted calls, especially those including intimate conversations, one linguist told ABC.

Wow. Absolutely surprising that a shadowy government agency would abuse a congressionally-approved blank check on overseas eavesdropping.

This is why surveillance like this doesn't work. You can't trust people to only use it for it's intended purpose. There's always going to be somebody abusing the system.

I fucking hate our government.
The best part of this is that nothing is going to happen.

Oh, and "1900-EAVESDROP"? Cle-he-he-he-he-ver!

Yeah, people are too busy crapping themselves about the economy. If this story came out under different circumstances something might have been done.

I doubt it.

I chronicle this stuff because when I was young I couldn't fathom why people would give up their freedoms, but these days, knowing what I do about general human behavior, I think a full trasformation from 1777 to 1984 is very possible.

We'll give up our freedoms willingly and thank the government for doing such a good job.

Part of that philosophy says that the gov't will stage a disaster to get all of us to do anything just to feel safe. Alot of people (and I'm not sure if I'm one of them) think that 9/11 was that moment that set things in motion.
Yeah, it's why I said "something MIGHT have been done." I agree with you, though. It's a damn shame, too.
Did the stock market lose 20% during the week when this program was first exposed?

I think we knew about this in 2005 or early 2006.
You people act like this has been going on only since Bush got in office, seriously.
Before Bush, they had warrants because FISA required it.

Before FISA, it was just like Bush but people could exist outside of the grid much more easily.

Oh jesus fuck. When a call originates overseas, incoming to the US, do you think the Double Secret Spy Network takes the time to look up the number, check the file on the owner and make sure he's on the "American sympathizer good-guy list" before intercepting the call ? They have license to monitor all overseas calls, so they're doing it. Why is this news? Isn't there a financial crisis going on to report about, or is the public tired of it already?

You want to get worked up about someone spying on your phonecalls? Dial 1-800-ECHELON and win a trip to Guantanamo, all expenses paid.

I have a better idea - let's let an abusive, all-powerful authority be in total control of our heathcare and our economy, too. I'd sleep better at night knowing our government was going to FIGHT FOR ME !!
I was expecting Level1 to post this. I am disappointed.
because it's old news....

please check out this interview from Dec 20, 2005: http://www.prisonplanet.tv/audio/201205madsen.mp3

also, you can't expect me to post every single thing our corrupt gov't is up to. Just bookmark www.infowars.net to stay informed.

It's simple, all you gotta do is scan the headlines at least once or twice a day before heading over to FOX or CNN, or whatever your flavor of news is.
