i think they mean the bill was written by morons, not obama=black=monkey. havent you ever seen a skit or cartoon where monkeys are writing books, tv shows etc? people get their panties in a bunch too easily.

isn't it a play on the pun that a room full of monkeys could write shakespeare?

Monkeys wrote the stimulus bill...

Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity opportunist

indeed! And I know sometimes reading news/information from a different pov is enlightening, but UK posting racist stories? Come on.... this is tabloid material and if I click the link at the bottom, they'll tell me Batboy was really G.W.Bush's nephew. [/sarcasm]

Well either the NY Post cartoonist 1) wanted publicity, 2) is racist, or 3) doesn't fucking think about what he draws.

Gotta be one of the 3, you can't possibly think that's a good idea otherwise.

yes, thats what it is, i couldnt think of the exact phrase when i responded at first.
Wow, that's pretty terrible. And even if it wasn't about Obama, it's incredibly morbid and unfunny.
What happened to your funny bone? Obviously this has nothing to do with Obama. Americans worry way to much about what offends someone else. If a picture offends you, stop looking at it. If a song offends you, turn the sound off. If a video offends you, turn the tv off. I've never understood why people make big deals out of nothing now adays.

Another vote for Ramstoria's interpretation.

Also...that's a pretty good picture of a dead monkey; I love the expression on his face.

Could be all 3. The NY Post's response is quite childish, which should be unsurprising given their (1) demographic and (2) parent company.

I suspect the link to Obama was unintentional, but that doesn't absolve it of those stereotypes.

It's just in incredibly poor taste. Even if W were still president it would still be in poor taste.
Never mind the physical similarities between W and a chimp.

No matter who it was referring to, it's just in fucking bad taste.

Who thought the monkey was Obama? I never drew the comparison. So, I'm going to go with Ramstoria here like everyone else. It's about stupid politicians.

Although I'm surprised it wasn't a dead Elephant or Donkey in place of the monkey to be quite honest.

It definitely has nothing to do with the adage of moneys on typewriters reproducing Shakespeare -- that's to say even the talentless will get lucky & create something great eventually. Definitely not referenced by someone who opposes the stimulus bill.

I doubt it has anything to do with Obama, it just doesn't make sense, I don't see the connection.

Might be related to that shot-chimp HuffPo story looploop linked, but it still doesn't make much sense -- that is, included a dead chimp in a cartoon just because a chimp getting shot made the news recently would be extremely bad taste without any sort of message to speak of.

Doesn't make a whole lot of sense in any interpretation considered so far -- neither funny nor poignant. I wouldn't call it offensive, but regardless the dead monkey certainly seems unnecessary (allude to the bill being written by a chimp in other ways).

Apparently it's been in the news that the cops shot some violent chimp in Connecticut, so I can see how they came up with this.

Edit: This is probably the same thing Koggit is talking about.

Why do people throw Obama in here? House Democrats were the ones who wrote the "stimulus" bill. If anyone should be offended, it's Nancy Pelosi, David Obey, Steny Hoyer, Barney Frank, Charlie Rangel and their pals.
I doubt it has anything to do with Obama, it just doesn't make sense, I don't see the connection.
Seriously, guys? I mean, I'm not saying it was intended, just... seriously, you don't see it? Really?

Sarang, the question is why include a dead chimp.. There are countless ways to allude to "a chimp wrote this bill" without a dead chimp. The dead chimp is in bad taste regardless of its meaning.

But Bush was compared to monkeys far more often.. including Curious George, though I guess that made more non-racist sense with Bush since his name was George.

I don't get it. Why would the cop just shoot the monkey for no reason? Did the monkey attack them or something? Were they hired to take out the monkey for writing the stimulus bill? So many questions...

The author is a moron if he thought this wouldn't be perceived as racist whether that was his intent or not.

If this were during the Bush admin, it would be funny. But still, there are a million other things that could be inserted into that balloon that are nowhere near political

It's a play on both the stimulus bill, and the chimpanzee who mauled the woman. The cops shot the chimp.

After getting a good look at the pic, it doesn't even remind me of Obama. You are right about the chimps and the typewriters, now that I think about it. If anybody should be outraged, it should be Congress, but this cartoon could've been done better, AND should've been seen like I don't know, LAST WEEk, when those Republicans were and still are whining about how much money is spent to save our country.

I'm willing to bet a lot (perhaps my copy of complete Earthbound) that the cartoonist isn't racist and didn't mean anything by it. He probably thought "Hey, wouldn't it be funny if the lady who called 911 called to report a monkey writing a crappy stimlus bill? And the cops show up to stop the wild monkey who was finishing the stimlus bill? Harharhar." It's not very funny, but that's my hypothesis on his thought process.

Really, sometimes I think the only reason racial stereotypes exist are the sensitives who get riled up every time something that could be remotely construed as a stereotype or racist is brought up (and thusly why they are brought up in the first place, for the racist attention whores to feed off the attention)

The guy has a history of making inflammatory cartoons, you can search his name and find examples easily enough.

I think that there is very little chance the guy had no idea how the cartoon would be taken.

stereotypes exist because they are either true or have a grain of truth to them (or common misconception).

this is a racial epithet. its a fine line between the two but there is a difference.

Just like Friend of Sonic said earlier, it's as racial as you want it to be. I see the cartoon and most other Obama/Monkey comparisons as mostly knocking on the man's intelligence, specifically in this case for signing the stimulus bill. Ok, maybe there's something about his ugly mug but I'm sure when you go to bushorchimp.com/ you don't think it's racial at all, again, its a poke at the president's intelligence and his "stupid look on his face" (which is just as insulting as calling obama ugly).

Well I think you are missing the point, the point being this is the fucking NY Post which had the headline "Wok this Way" for W's meeting with top officials from China.

Did they really? ahaha. That's amusing.
stereotypes exist because they are either true or have a grain of truth to them (or common misconception).
Stereotypes can't be true by definition, and even most lies have a "grain of truth," so that doesn't really mean anything.

Stereotypes exist because they are a tool used to reduce the amount of thought required in day-to-day life and they also make it easier for you to distinguish your own group from others and simplify/dehumanize other groups for various reasons. It's not necessary that they be based on anything but a thought.
this is a racial epithet. its a fine line between the two but there is a difference.
Yeah and that's true - it's not a stereotype that black people are chimps or something, it's a racist insinuation that black people and chimps have comparable features, intellect, violent/irrational nature, and that it is necessary for them to be controlled or kept away.

And I'm not saying this dude is racist (at least not simply based on this one cartoon, I haven't seen anything else he has done), but if he isn't then he's either stupid or knew exactly how it would play out and intended for it to do so.

I don't think he meant the typewriter thing either, I think he could have just been trying to say that politicians (or at least politicians he doesn't agree with - the ones who were involved with the stimulus bill) are stupid like apes (or monkeys, since apparently people don't generally know the difference/make the distinction).
