Residents of an East Oakland neighborhood are upset after Oakland police killed a wayward deer over the weekend.

On Saturday morning, an officer spotted the young deer that had wandered into the area and chased it in his patrol car. The deer jumped over a fence and into the backyard of Kim McLemore' house on 90th avenue.

Police evacuated the area and, under orders to "dispatch the deer," shot it seven times before it died. Animal control officers were also on the scene.

Officials said the deer was gunned down because "it was acting disoriented in an urban environment." Holly Joshie from the Oakland Police Department also said, "There were many children and area residents and the officers did make a decision that the deer was a public safety issue."

Kids thrilled by their four-legged visitor were confused by the shooting, said Anthony Weems, who caught the shooting on video. You can watch part of his footage in the KGO report (above).

"That's a deer, you know. They [the children] don't know any better," said Weems. "They just know it's a deer. And they're all like, 'Why are they back there shooting Bambi?' You know, 'Why are they back there killing a deer'?"

Weems and other residents believed the killing was unnecessary. "They didn't have to do that," said McLemore. "They could have figured something else out, right?"

According to Susan Heckly of the Lindsay Wildlife Center, they could have tranquilized the deer or set it free.

But officers from OPD and animal control are not trained to use tranquilizers on animals, reports KTVU.

"We are going to review this procedure and in the future we really are going to come up with something else. There has to be a better way to handle this situation," said Joshie.
animal control was on the scene. if they didnt have a contingency plan then the fault lies with them, not the opd.
Seconded.

Why no tasering?

I assume none of these Police officers have ever been hunting? If it takes you several shots to bring down an animal maybe you are in the wrong line of work.

I used to live fairly close to the area. 7 gunshots in the middle of the day is fairly normal, but the fact that it's the cops shooting a deer is the crazy part. And to the people that say, 7 shots, what in the hell, these are handgun rounds (albeit .40's). Hunters don't often hunt with handguns because they aren't very effective for that purpose.

Yay. More cops acting like jackasses and (likely) getting away with it.

When is it going to stop with these fucking cops?

Are they really supposed to use a handgun on a deer? Was the deer rampaging through people, eating them alive? I don't understand. One of those bullets easily could have hit an innocent-- of course, understandably, officers will choose to use a gun if the greater safety of the people can be achieved, but was the risk of shooting a civilian worth it in the situation of a loose deer?

But... seriously. I bet all that meat is going to go to waste. I mean, okay, that many shots, I'm sure a lot of the meat's not in great shape, but... still! Wasteful fucks.

I find it quite hilarious that this is appalling, but you turn on the tv to the outdoor channel and it's ok to murder erm... sorry hunt with Automatic rifles at wildlife.

If it's killing the animal to eat it, it's okay.

If it's a bunch of cops acting like a bunch of bigheaded former jocks with guns and superiority complexes, it's wrong.

Much like Japan and sex we in California are repressed in regards to guns. Whenever the chance arises to use a firearm we go ape shit with it. We cannot fault the Oakland PD we must fault the overzealous repression from the liberals in California.
