But does bring up a good question that i have never understood. I am a Maintenance Technician for a food processing company and make about 40,000 a year. how ever the video game programmer makes double that and just sits on his ass. I know his job is maybe harder and more demanding to a point but i feed people he gives people carpal tunnel why do i make less then him? God help us if a whole generation of people can't get online to check there myspace page but screw that fact that they wouldn't know how to eat with out Burger King and prepared food items.
 
You raise a valid point, the kind of point I think about when I'm in school criticizing art or social policy:

"this shit is useless if I can't eat!"
 
Well it's a capitalist society - if you work for someone who sells something, your wages aren't based on importance or need of a product, but rather its monetary value (and how much of that the company wants to share with you). Computer programmers (who can work long and tiring hours btw, when they have to meet some deadline) make more money because their product makes more money. It's a completely superfluous and unnecessary product, but that doesn't really matter as long as people keep buying it.

Very true and i have friends who are programmers and speak of 17 hour days, but still I'd like to see what would happen in a "escape of New York" setting how many of these programmers could get out or even stay alive for that matter.

No i do not wish the end of the world of anything drastic like that but after looking at videos from the current war and other wars i do have to question how many people lost there basic survival instinct due to technology in the sense of what has to get done.
 
It's all in how marketable your skills are. If you don't have a skill that's in high demand (i.e. an advanced education or excellent job experience, demonstrated training and excellent at a trade etc.) you aren't going to get paid well.

And then you have to factor in how much money there is in your industry period as that's a huge factor in relation to your pay versus people who do similar jobs in other fields, as Spazx pointed out.

As for the end of days crap, I don't really care as you just can't worry about nonsense like that. In today's world the path to survival and living a good life is getting an education or learning a trade. Not being a warrior or something who can fend for themselves in a post apocalyptic world.

Oh with out a doubt i just feel that many industries are over payed for certain tasks. i know many union plumbers who make almost $45/Hr which i am sorry but unless its a shit plant as in city reclamation plant that's way to much for just running water. Same holds true for technology sure we need programmers and such for almost everything but whats happens if food plant workers strike or something to that effect how are people going to eat?

And the end of days comment was in more regards to stupid people if for some reason a city was cut off from power for a 72 hour period how many people could still do math with out a calculator or for many not all but many know how much cash they have in a bank without the use of online checking.you want to see an example of this for yourself find some young cashier and if you total comes to $2.50 give her/him $5.50 and watch how confused they get for a second cause there not used to doing math or problem solving off the top of there head and need a machine to do it for them when normally they would just make change for a $5

1. How marketable your skills (how unique are they, how many years of education, prestige of education, experience etc.).

2. How much money is in the field.

They're not based on the need for society. Luxury items cost more than things needed for basic survival for the most part, so you see higher salaries for game designers than farmers etc.

That's just the way the economy works, there will be higher salaries in non-critical fields as the products they offer generate more revenue than things like food, water etc.

It's not just true but also sad, i know the whole salaries deal as i have a part time jobs sitting on my butt removing spyware and crap off peoples computer 3 days a week for a local repair shop and will clear $30,000 for this year and only worked half a year and 3 days a week. But still there are alot of other underpaid folks who make less then that who i think are more important then PC people and such. Truckers with out trucks America would stop with out them/
