Obsessive compulsive game collector questions

OILYWATER

CAGiversary!
-Have any of you actually exchanged a game or DVD for the same title simply because when you peeled off the security seal, some of the cover insert got peeled off too?

-What is considered the primary causes of cover/spine discoloration? Natural sunlight (even indirect)? Artificial lights?

-Are you addicted to making your own custom covers?

-How do you organize your video games in your bookshelf, specifically with series? How are your Zelda Gamecube games arranged? Is Resident Evil 0 before Resident Evil? Once I was so bored, I organized my 1000+ CD collection by spine color. Sad.

-Absolutely refuse to own any preowned titles no matter how prestine the condition?

-Can actually distinguish between (and savor) newly opened Gamecube game case smell and PS2 game case smell?

-Handles video game cases like a baby so that the fresh factory smoothness of the cover plastic is never lost? Check and compare your new games with your early PS2 games if you don't know what I mean.

I want to add (on a side note), I can get so frustrated with my friend's home theater system, not because of the quality of the equipment, but because he hasn't taking the time to optimize his settings for gaming. I satisfy my frustrations by pointing out the two dead pixels in his $7500 HDTV every couple months, right after he's forgotten about them.

Hmm, mine are sorted alphabetically by system then alphabetically by title. I own alot of pre-owned titles. Don't really notice any new smells. I keep good care of my games.

All my games are divided by system, then sorted alphabetically. I remove all stickers and gunk from used games and use Goo Gone to make sure it's completely clean.
It is direct sunlight that makes the covers/spines of games discolor. I'm sure some types of lights will do it too, but sunlight is the harshest.

If you stated that you could tell what system a game is for by licking it, I was going to have you committed.

1. no
2. Natural sunlight is the devil
3. no
4. For my GC resident Evils, I put a lot of thought into it. As much as it pains me to have them out of alphabetical order, I felt that in the end, in order of the series was the best way to go, hence I have the starting from RE0, RE, RE2, RE3, RECVX.

For the Zelda, I have the Collectors edition first, the Ocarina of Time second and Windwaker third (in alphabetical order, I though that was bestt).

For the rest of my games, I have about 20 DVD cases that hold 14 each hanging on my wall. I have all my games seperated by system and arranged alphabetically. For my older N64 games and PS1, DC, GBA games, and SNES games, I have two media racks next to the TV to hold them, again arranged by system in alphabetical order.

5. No, preowned is fine, but must be complete and in perfect condition.

6. Don't forget the excellent Xbox newly opened game smell, my favorite.

7. Yes, hence the DVD holders that I store the cases in on my wall, it keeps them seprate from each other removing the danger of them rubbing against each other causing small scratches on the case. I also tend to wipe down the case with my shirt after handling,
If you own Metal Gear Solid 2 & Document of...., do you put Document after MGS2 or under D?
again, a lot of thought went into this and caused me much pain. I finally decided that since it is in essence a companion disc to MGS2, I placed it after MGS2. I originally placed it with the 'D's", but I felt that since it's technically not a game, it should go next to MGS2.
If you own Metal Gear Solid 2 & Document of...., do you put Document after MGS2 or under D?
I'd put it under D

Have any of you actually exchanged a game or DVD for the same title simply because when you peeled off the security seal, some of the cover insert got peeled off too?

Yes.

-What is considered the primary causes of cover/spine discoloration? Natural sunlight (even indirect)? Artificial lights?

Natural.

-Are you addicted to making your own custom covers?

Not yet, but I have a ton of saved Japanese scans for some games that I one day intend on printing out and using,

-How do you organize your video games in your bookshelf, specifically with series? How are your Zelda Gamecube games arranged? Is Resident Evil 0 before Resident Evil? Once I was so bored, I organized my 1000+ CD collection by spine color. Sad.

Game name. I put Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3 under the R. I put Chronicles of Riddick under R, mainly because people just say "Riddick", or if I want to play it, I'm going to look for "Riddick", not "Chronicles".

-Absolutely refuse to own any preowned titles no matter how prestine the condition?

Nah. I actually mostly buy preowned, and they're usually in great condition.

-Can actually distinguish between (and savor) newly opened Gamecube game case smell and PS2 game case smell?

No, but I can with XBox new/used. It's quite easy.

-Handles video game cases like a baby so that the fresh factory smoothness of the cover plastic is never lost? Check and compare your new games with your early PS2 games if you don't know what I mean.

You sure seem to favor the PS2 here. No, actually, I take all games out of the cases. I don't usually touch the cases. I have the games in protective holders.

Nothing worse than a bad sounding system. Unfortunately, I don't have any money. I have a stereo that has "game mixing", so I can have XBox sound come out through the stereo. It's not the same as a home theatre system, but it's better than coming out of the TV.

-Can actually distinguish between (and savor) newly opened Gamecube game case smell and PS2 game case smell?

Since I work at an EB Games, I get to open them all \:D/ . If I was blindfolded, I could tell you what platform I opened just by the smell. My favorite, however, are the boxes we get our refurbished systems in. They smell like peperorri pizza.

My video games are organized by game system, in alphabetical order. As for DVD's, I have my "snappers" (Warner Bros and New Line) first, and then my keep cases/digipacks (just about everyone else). Reason for doing this is because the edge of the snappers get's caught on the keep case and the plastic get's damaged. I have a separate bookcase for all my TV Shows on DVD.

I always go chronological when it comes to series (SSX Tricky before SSX 3, Sonic Adventure DX before Sonic Adventure 2, etc.), and alphabetical otherwise. XIII threw me for a loop, but I decided to treat it as Thirteen and put it with the T's. My Zeldas are arranged like scsg's, but I have no idea where I'll put Four Swords. I can't decide if I want to split up the two compilations or put it between them and WW. :whistle2:k

Wow, these are some cool responses. Everyone's welcome to contribute any other obsessive compulsive tendencies.

It gets even more annoying if you're a manga collector and your favorite publisher changes the spine design in mid-series.

Speaking of OCD, one day I want to write a psyche thesis on the phenomenon of leveling up, centered around the (IMO) insane "LvL100 in whatever that island was" in Kingdom Hearts.

I've got RE 0-CV and Zelda in order of age (Collector's edition, Master Quest, Wind Waker, 4 swords).

Otherwise, I've been considering alphabetizing all 1000+ games, but I have them divided up by publisher right now (EX: all the Capcom games on PS2 are together in a row) and I kinda dig it.

my games are in alpha and separated by system. plus, i have a bunch of preowned, all complete though. but some of that shit is kinda gay.
Oh wait, it's in the fiiiile....under D....for donut...

Don't even act like i didn't get that Donut.

I did that once, for kingdom hearts, two times i bought it and both ended up getting screwed up pretty bad, so i went and bought it somewhere else eventually.
-Have any of you actually exchanged a game or DVD for the same title simply because when you peeled off the security seal, some of the cover insert got peeled off too?
Hmm never done that one
-What is considered the primary causes of cover/spine discoloration? Natural sunlight (even indirect)? Artificial lights?
I like to keep my room like a cave, the sun is my enemy (not because I am protecting my games, just because)
-Are you addicted to making your own custom covers?
nope
-How do you organize your video games in your bookshelf, specifically with series? How are your Zelda Gamecube games arranged? Is Resident Evil 0 before Resident Evil? Once I was so bored, I organized my 1000+ CD collection by spine color. Sad.
I am too lazy to really organize and I only have one game holder that is full (38 games) so most are on a shelf or in my closet. I do have the ones in my dvd/game holder organized by my favorites.
-Absolutely refuse to own any preowned titles no matter how prestine the condition?
Yes, I actually own two preowned. One is the zelda OoT/Master quest that I got for $4.99 at blockbuster in pristine condition. I don't mind that one, I don't want to pay an obscene price for it sealed, so I will stick with the used copy. The other used game I have is Timesplitters 2. It has stickers all over it and no manual, it is the black sheep of my collection. I despise it and want to replace it when I see Timesplitters 2 for 10 or less. I also refuse to buy EB "new" but opened games.

I also want to replace all my previewed dvds especially the dual discs with only one dvd spot.
-Can actually distinguish between (and savor) newly opened Gamecube game case smell and PS2 game case smell?
There is nothing better than undoing the shrinkwrap of a game, but I don't really have a good sense of smell.
-Handles video game cases like a baby so that the fresh factory smoothness of the cover plastic is never lost? Check and compare your new games with your early PS2 games if you don't know what I mean.
Yeah, one time my roomate borrowed Mario Kard DD and I saw it on the floor in his room, I quickly picked it up and put it on the shelf.

I put my games in these degrees of organization, going from general to specific:

Favorite system
Favorite publisher
Favorite series
Chronologically

So, as an example:

Gamecube
Nintendo
The Legend of Zelda
LoZ: Ocarina of Time / Master Quest

I usually wash my hands before I handle my precious games (especially the manuals). The naturally occuring oils in your fingertips leave prints on them. I also make anybody who is about to play my systems (nephews, friends) wash their hands first...have you ever seen what's on a little kid's hands? Also, never, ever, loan any games or dvds to anyone unless you make it extremely clear to them that you expect them back in the exact same mint condition in which they were borrowed. Threatening them beforehand with bodily harm usually does the job.

I sort by system first, then genre, developer/publisher, and then alphabetical order. I.e. Disgaea, La Pucelle, Phantom Brave are together in that order, and all the Sega Xbox titles are together. A game series that spans multiple consoles (that I own copies of) gets its own separate area.

Any cases with stickers or remnants of stickers are switched for better cases from crappy games, or my brother's games.

I'm considering those game condom things but I'm waiting to see the long term effects before I try it (will systems eat them, will they damage the disc, etc).

With all the unopened games I've purchased (with help from CAG) over the last few months, I don't have enough time to play them, much less agonize over organizing them.

2. Natural sunlight is the devil
No wonder gamers are so pale, its like a religious obligation to avoid the sun.

Err... ok then, I keep my DVD cases on a shelf next to my TV, while my Xbox and GBA boxes are in a sealed cabinet to protect from other people/ elements/ friend's cat.

I don't organize my game cases. I keep them somewhat ordered by preference of gameplay and probability of trading while the games themselves are in Caselogic case. I trade and sell a often so there's no point in arranging them alphabetically.

The Xbox new game smell is my favorite as well, but I'm a GC smell virgin. Someone mentioned other aspects of life... well I keep my car clean and neat, and have my shoes on a rack, but everything else that I own is pretty much strewn about randomly.

- I've ended up stretching the plastic off a casejust a bit , by peeling the security sticker, so you're not alone.

- I noticed after buying Bombastic (PS2) that the spine had a cut in it, like an exacto open the case of games. I sold it to gamestop and bought another copy on-line. That copy had a cut on it also, so I returned it.

- I have different catagories for all my games. I have a tower of Live games, and war titles, then another of recent PS2 games, and XBOX sports games. Older titles get sent to the closet, where they are protected from the light. In there also, rest unopened games.

- If I sell any back, I check the condition of the case, if it's better that some of my older ps2 games, I'll switch the cases.

- I notiice by feel and sight, the age of a DVD case. The plastic gets a bit harder and duller.

On a side note, how beat up is your GBA SP (if at all)? After I finally got mine (NES Classic version) I immediately got one of those faux-leather sleeve/pouches to put it in whenever I'm not playing. The ONE moment I put it in my backpack w/o the sleeve = noticable amounts of minor scratches on the top. Oh well, thoughts of the DS made me feel better.

Well, my games are just random by system. But my dvds are another matter. I organize them by feeling I guess. Generally it is by director, with better directors higher up on the shelf, but sometimes things can over power the director, like Bill Murray movies or maybe series with different directors. Some things are in different style groups like Family Guy and Simpsons are with other cartoon box sets located close to the other TV Box sets. I also have 80's movies (well movies that scream 80's movies) in a separate section.

It may sound confusing but it works for me. Unfortunately, we just moved and my wife alphabetized the DVDs, so Im in the process of switching them back (yes its easy to find things alphabetically, but I like to browse, and its easier to browse the other way.)

My SP is beat to hell, because I use it all the time. My launch day cobalt no longer has the code on the back of it because it rubbed iff the back after all the use.

I was too. I heard that you can play the game with the skin on, and when it gets scratched up (if it does) you put another one on right over it. :?:
