Rumor Mill

-The Guitar Hero camp will be getting the Beatles exclusively, though it's not clear whether it's for a standalone game, DLC, or something else. Don't expect to see the result of this deal until 2010.

-Max Payne 3 is expected to be finished in time for the movie's DVD release, but it's not being made by Remedy Entertainment, who are working on Alan Wake for Microsoft. The team behind The Warriors is behind the game.

-Regarding the PS3 exclusive game from RockStar, it's definitely not LA Noire, which will be going multiplatform, but a mysterious title from RockStar North, the guys behind GTA IV.

-Though the guys behind Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Lightsaber Duels were annoyed with the secret announcement of Wii MotionPlus, they are looking into making another lightsaber game for next year to use the new accessory.

Q-Tips

-WiiWare will be getting Cave Story for the service this fall.

-Look for MTV Games/EA to be the publishers of Tim Schafer's Brutal Legend for next year.

-God of War III probably won't be shipping until 2010.

Download/Wrap-Up

:360::ps3::ps2:Mercenaries 2: World in Flames - A lot's changed in the open-world genre since 2005, next month, we'll let you know if Mercs 2 has adapted.
:360:Braid - Excellent but intellectually limited as a puzzle-platformer, Braid is truly divine thanks to its emotional depth.
:360:Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 - Retro Evolved 2 may not feel quite as balanced or as fresh as its predecessor, but it's jam-packed with enough shape-shooting fun to last lifetimes.
:wii:Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People: Episode 1 - SBCG4AP captures the Homestar Runner web cartoon's signature humor style through and through. If you're a fan of Strong Bad, or adventure games in general, this one's unquestionably for you.

If you have any questions about the issue or want some more specifics on anything in the issue, don't hesitate to ask.

Aw, I had higher hopes for Force Unleashed. I knew I shouldn't have, but that demo piqued my interest. Maybe I'll pick it up once it's clearanced.

Pick it up anyway.

What you like may not be what they like.

Huh, I'm curious to see how that Beatles thing pans out, or if it does at all.

I suppose it was only a matter of time, considering that BOTH EA and Activision have boatloads of money, so that just means Activision threw more (and faster). What I can't fully believe, however, is that they'll end up being exclusive.

On that note, if it's not until 2010 (we'll say fall, to be fair) I fully expect the American populace to be throughly sick of these games by then. Guitar Hero used to be this cool little niche thing, but now with the competition, the genre is being run into the ground. Sure, they'll still sell, but I guarantee public demand will be WAY down 2 years from now.

... oh, and seriously, if they can get The Beatles, they can get Led Zeppelin.
I seriously doubt that the Beatles rumor will end up being true.
Believe it. I heard about it a while ago.
Ouch. Poor Spore.
Come on, it was the DS version. I think we all knew it was going to be shit.

The score for TFU is disappointing. I was holding out high hopes for it especially because of the way the story ties into SW canon. Good to see Viva Pinata score so high though.

Not surprised by The Force Unleashed score. I was extraordinarily underwhelmed by the demo and had already crossed it off my list.

I think it's funny how they review games that aren't out yet (NHL 09, Force Unleashed) but not ones that have been out a while (Braid, Mercs 2 came out earlier this week, Geometry Wars 2).

:360::ps3:NHL 09 - B+

Drat. This went from a must buy to a must rent. I was expecting an A, the B let me down. That's not to say it isn't a good game, I'm sure it is, but with all the stuff coming out this fall, that'll push it to the back of my list

Yeah, Magazines, with their deadlines, are at the mercy of getting early review copies, so this happens.

Wow, Tales of Vesperia has a huge gap between the high and low reviews. A B+ versus a C,.. Jeez...oh well, I wasn't planning on picking it up for a while, anyways, seeing as I still don't have a 360. It seemed to score between an 8-8.5 pretty much everywhere else I looked.

Glad to see that DQ4 scored well, though! I'll be getting a DS around the holiday season for sure, and mainly for the DQ trilogy remakes/Chrono Trigger port/FF4 remake.

That is unfortunate. I was especially excited with Game Informer's description of the game: "If you put Psi-Ops and God of War into a George Lucas blender, you would end up with Force Unleashed." Shame it apparently doesn't live up to it's potential.

Some publishers send early review code, some do not.

TFU demo was horrible. I concur.
What is this Cave Story.. I have to do some research later today.
It's a 2D side scrolling platformer that's quite good. It has NES level graphics but I've enjoyed playing it on PC. These are Doujin PC games that are from the Watanabe group and VERY popular with the Japanese. They're responsible for "Queen Of Hearts" on the PC to my knowledge as well.

I wouldn't put too much stock into just the score, as it's from some new guy called Gord Goble and not any of the regular sports reviewers (Greg Ford, Todd Zuniga, David Ellis, Andrew Fitch) with the only complaint he makes is that gameplay quirks/glitches that have been around before haven't been fixed with 09.

Just got the issue and seems that the new EiC is still making changes. The review section got a little bit of a new design and the final word section has been dumped to be replaced by a blu-ray review section(:nottalking:). I understand the PS3 plays blu-ray discs, but keep movies out of a gaming magazine.

The magazine is turning into the old OPM magazine(which reviewed DVDs).

Yeah the whole 1up group seems pretty slow with their reviews.

I think you're splitting hairs with a B+ to an A but hey, it's better to be safe than sorry right?

I think Milkman needs to worry more about what's inside rather than what's outside. He's written... what, 2 or 3 EiC columns now, and thus far they've generally been about how "awesome" the cover of the magazine is. I loved this issue... not only did he talk about it in his column, there was also an entire article devoted to it.

Sidenote: haven't been terribly impressed with them, either. 'Unlike anything you usually see on a game magazine!'. True or not, they aren't mind-blowing enough to warrant picking up the magazine.

I just wish he'd seem half as concerned about the content as he does about the covers.

EGM has always been pretty good with content, but the importance of covers shouldn't be underestimated. A striking cover is what helps the magazine stand out.

I was actually more impressed about the cover encompassing the front and back. You don't see that of many gaming magazines outside of EDGE.
