OFFICIAL 2006 Yard Sale Thread

Over 100 garage sales advertised in the newspaper yesterday I was only able to hit about 30. Here's what i got..

3 NES's and 14 games only one set of hookups and a smaller rounded NES controller:$9
-Super Mario Bros x2
-Rollerball
-Metal Gear
-Tecmo Super Bowl
-Rygar
-Monopoly
-Back to the Future II & III
-Bart's Space Mutants
-Clash at Demonhead
-TMNT
-Mario Bros/Duckhunt
-Super off Road
-TMNT II :The Arcade Game
Half Life GOTY edition and strat guide/Thief The dark Project and strat guide:$3
Power Plug/Seventh Guest/Lego#8836:$2.50
2 books on engines:$0.50
Hitman Contracts/Wake Board(not pictured):$9

One of the NES's was lying around at a garage and so I did CIF $1 and got it. The other two and the games were lying on the ground at another sale and so I asked $7 instead of the advertised $10 and got them this included the one set of hookups I got. Half Life and Theif were priced at $5 apiece did CIF for $3 for both and got it. Lego set, power plug, and seventh guest were at a church sale. When I offered my price the guy accepted and said, "Sold to an American." The engine books i bought cause one applied to the car i own (1968 ranchero). Hitman I wanted but the cost was too much at $5 so I added the wake board and dickered from there.

Course what garage sale day would be complete without something a little strange for sale. I was in the ritzier part of town and went to a garage sale hosted by an old couple. This is what i found...

It was a rather large box of them too. I didnt come to close or touch they looked well used.;)

Woke up late on saturday because I figured it would still be raining, went out at 9am, not too many sales as it's a long weekend here. Hit up probably 25 sales total in 2.5 hours, spaced out over the city.

One sale I found some GBA games ($7 each) along with a silver GBA SP marked 30. Offered her 4 bucks CIF for zelda the NES remake for GBA, she said nothing less than 7 so I passed. The only other sale that had games was a lady selling her son's PS2 games, mainly sports, but I picked up a complete Shinobi for 5 CIF even though her son gave her "strict instructions to sell for 10 dollars each" lol. I told her, "Your son isn't out here, he won't know" ;)

So pretty crappy weekend for me, next weekend is the big 100+ house sale that I'm looking forward to. I'm not sure if I should put all my time in that though because I bet a lot of people will be having sales since they didn't do them this weekend.

Really? I figured Memorial Day Weekend would be slow for sales since everyone is on vacation or picnicing or whatever on Sat.

It's nice to see so many people practicing and and being successful with the CIF technique. We've really come quite a ways with this thread. Viva la cheapasses!

Ah, but remember I live in Canada, our long weekend is occuring right now so it explains the slowness of this weekend. Next weekend is a normal weekend for us.

I remember last year's July 4th weekend (don't remember if the Saturday was actually the 4th or not).

It was an unbelievably beautiful day, and yet we only found 4 sales. Holidays really seem to make an impact in this regard.

Ah, I didn't notice that :)

K, now for something off topic, but I figured you guys could give me a good answer. I'm looking for a car (95-96 300zx). What's the most popular method for advertising a car in the US? Is it autotrader.com, ebaymotors, cars.com? Or is there something else I'm missing cause there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of these cars for sale lol. I'll delete this post once I get a clear answer so it doesn't clutter the thread, just PM me with it please :) I need to find this car for my dad before the 2nd week of june.

I found my 97 Impreza on Craigslist (bought it last Friday). But I continuously checked autotrader.com, recycler.com, and dealer pages. Good luck.

Hmm...looks like 50s or 60s issues. Better hope the first issue or some of the other classic issues (Bettie Page, etc.) weren't in there. You may have passed up making $1,000 on Ebay.

A decent day today...

Picked up Threads of Fate and Legend of Mana both complete and mint from a Craigslist ad for $10 a piece (even delivered them to me, very nice of him). The actual "score" came on the way home from work...stopped by one of the few "pre-memorial day" garage sales that were being held in the rain.

She had some older, beaten up nintendo games (I couldn't even read half the labels), but the gem came in the guide department. Given, it looked like someone had spilled water all over it, so the cover is wrinkled/shriveled up, and there is no poster, unfortunately. It's under the heater right now with a large weight on top of it, but for 2 bucks, I couldn't pass this one up:

Final Fantasy VII: Versus Guide

Flipping through the pages, I can see why people like this guide better than the Brady original...there's actually some good shit in this one.

Ooo nice find on the guide, my brother bought that guide when he bought FF7 when it was released. Very nice guide, the poster was awesome too. He ended up selling it to his friend for like 10 bucks, it was pretty beat up so I doubt it would've fetched much. Hopefully you can salvage the rest of the book, although water damage is almost impossible to reverse.

Actually, the pages are in pretty damn good condition, all points considered. None stuck together, none really wrinkled or falling out, but the cover sure could use a few passes under a steamroller

Decided to stop at a Goodwill when we were out of town just for fun. Looked through the games, a few NES and N64. Buried under a few games was Bubble Bobble 2, two stickers on the front label that I probably could've gotten off pretty cleanly. Not noticing the price on the back (halfway covered by the sleeve) I took it up the counter to ask for a price, $74.99...I was excited, I thought it would only be like $20 tops...

Holy shit! 74.99?!? I've never seen a goodwill charge over 3.99 for an NES game!

Hate to admit to it but when my goodwill tries to overcharge for stuff, I usually pull off the price sticker and take the item to the cashier. Usually the cashier will sell whatever it is for a hell of a lot less than the idiot who stuck the tag on in the first place.

On a related note, I didn't find any games over the weekend at yard sales but picked up a car dvd player with an LCD screen for $5 that works quite nicely. Geez, even the computer I am posting this message with was bought at a yardsale for $50.

Pretty damn expensive for a place that gets stuff for FREE. I would've taken that label off anyway I could. If it was marker, I would've stolen it and left $10 in the donation jar  (j.k.)

Actually that Dolly cover is circa 1978-9 . . . I remember because I used to steal them from the grocery store (when I was about 14).

I had a fool-proof method. I would go on a slow Sunday night and buy a bag full of food (for my Mom, I could walk the block to the store). After I paid, I acted like I forgot an item . . . I'd pass the mag rack and slip in the Playboy and then buy the last item. I never got caught.

Before the internet (and VHS) it was the only thing a kid had.

I guess someone checked the ebay price. It's also listed as an R6 at Digital Press. That still sucks though.

Heh, I was a porn-thief when I was young as well. My friend was older and much taller than I was. At 10, I was probably 4' tall, where he was 14 and about 6'2". So there was some legitmacy to him browsing the skin mags.

He would look at one and then put it on the lower shelf. I would slip it up my shirt. The record? 14 mags at one time! [Now, don't construe this as me endorsing theft, it is merely astonishment that a stupid little kid could walk out with that many titties.]

Then we discovered that they just tossed the mags in the dumpster at the end of the month, so we could get all we wanted for free.

Erm... oh yes, on topic... 15 sales, 8 thrifts and not one game last weekend. Three solid weeks of nuthin'.
Similar to cranguy I went saling with a friend today and it did make it alot more fun. The sale near my house which advertised games was indeed a bust. They actually had 5 Games in total. 2 Gamecube, 2 N64, and 1 SNES. His prices: $10.00 a piece for Gamecube (Sonic Battle and Madden 2003), $4.00 each for the others (Random N64 Baseball, Donkey Kong 64, and SNES Football). Very lame.

After that we went to that "200+ House Community Sale." It was good and bad... It was advertised as starting at 7:30AM but the people running some of the sales said all of the good stuff was gone by 6:00AM If I knew they were going to be selling stuff at 6:00, I would have been there by 6:00 so that was pretty lame. So out of approximately the 47 sales I hit in that area, I bought stuff from 2 of the houses.

Early in this area I got:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (PS2 Non-GH Complete) $2.00
The Cat in the Hat (PS2 Non-GH Complete) $2.00

These were marked $3.00 each but took $4.00 for both.

Later I picked up:
The OC Season 1 DVD Boxset (Mint Condition and Complete) $5.00
Leather Volcom Belt - $1.00

When I spotted the OC DVD, it seemed more or less out of place for that sale so I asked for a price. The guy quoted me $10.00 and I counter-offered with $5.00. He said no, but as I was putting it back down, he said "Fine, take it for $5.00," so I did just that. Nothing interesting to say about the belt, just glad I saw it, these things are usually pretty expensive.

After feeling like the sales in this community were pretty much picked over of anything worth while, we went to the other side of town. Not much better over there, one place had a crap load of current gen games, but they were pretty much on par with EB/Gamestop prices.

It was still pretty early in the day so we headed over to the swap meet. Among the usual over-priced videogame crud was a box with an NES in it among one person's area who otherwise just had clothes. I asked how much she was looking for and said $20.00. I looked deeper into the box to see what exactly it had and offered $15.00. She hesitated a bit but took it. I feel like I over-paid for this one, but am still happy about it.

The box included:
NES Complete with hookups
2 Controllers
1 Zapper
5 Dust-Covers
and the following games all cart-only:
1 Ninja Gaiden
1 Contra
1 Othello
1 R.C. PRO-AM
1 Volleyball
1 Wrestlemania
1 Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt
1 Iron Sword
1 Hogan's Alley
1 Bases Loaded II
1 Ultimate Basketball
1 Dragon Warrior
2 Ring King
1 Knight Rider... I don't care how lame it is, I will play this one.
1 Friday the 13th
1 Ice Hockey
1 Paper Boy

If you do the math, it's really only like $0.68 an item which isn't too bad. Plus my NES Game collection is really lacking so this helps a bit.

Overall not a bad day. Really I am most excited about my belt pick-up... haha. Hope everyone else who went out today got some nice finds. Still haven't found a cheap-ass digital camera, so my posts will remain pictureless for another week.
Finally picked up a new digital camera, so I updated my finds from the last trip with pictures! I'm still learning to use the camera and the lighting in my room is poor, so the pictures aren't the greatest. But I do love the camera (Canon PowerShot A620 for anyone who cares, picked the camera up along with a free 1GB SD Card from NewEgg.com for around 270 after shipping and taxes).

Sweet! Glad to see your posts going visual again.

Well, I think I'm going to skip a few weeks of sales. I need to clean the stuff that I've already picked up. That and I need to find room for all of it. I just picked up a new xbox 1 and I don't know if I have room for the box for that and the sega cd I got last week. How do you guys deal with all the stuff you find?

i have 2 of those bubble bobble things bout for a dollar, i pose this question to evilmax, i was just wondering if we should start a new thread about weirdest thing we have seen at a yardsale, or can we just add it to here

for me it was a house with porn dvd for 2.00 each and a vibrator, the girl said it was a massager only used 2 or 3 times, yuckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

Hah! Some people just have no shame at all, and little kids and old ladies go to yard sales too! We see porn surprisingly often also, but we also see food a lot. People selling old cans of Goya pinto beans and stuff. Crazy. Let's just keep this topic in this thread, it'd probably be easier. Plus, the more interesting stories in this thread the better!

Oh yeah, some good news if anyone was concerned about it: We have permission to keep this thread open past 500 posts (all the way until the end of the year). So just like last year, we'll have one thread for the entire year.
I think EvilMax and Moiety swim around in their cheap games and systems, kind of like Scrooge McDuck and his money.
haha I know exactly who Scoorge McDuck is and I've seen the movie where he swims in his cash.

Be prepared to pay about 10+ grand. Cash. And get a twin-turbo. Check Autotrader a lot and buy the print edition too since it has some more that aren't online.

I seem to recall a used breast pump that someone posted about.

for me one of the weirdest things I saw was real stuffed dog.

Not sure about how "weird" it is, but one thing that bothers me is when they sell used cosmetics/tolietries at yard sales? I mean really now - who wants to buy used shampoo, bars of soap, deodrant, and a half empty bottle of body lotion - eww

Yard sales were a bust today. Only 6 within walking distance with only lots and lots of junk.

As I was walking back from one that was way out in a spread-out subdivision area, I noticed something unusual off to the side of the road:

Slovenian 20 tolar bill autographed by Bill Clinton
Paid = FREE

At first, all I saw was the "20" mark and I thought, "Hey, free $20!" Then I picked up and and was rather disappointed to see it wasn't American money. Then I noticed the "Best Wishes" and signature, but couldn't make out whose signature it was. No one important, I figured.

I almost didn't take it with me, but I figured it looked interesting enough.

So I got it home, took it out of my pocket (forgot I had it) and studied it for a bit. Hmmm... B... C.... Bi... C... Bill Clinton! I had to Google the mottos on the bill just to figure out what country/language it was.

So yeah, I found Slovenian money autographed by Bill Clinton lying by the side of a road in rural Virginia. Go figure.

I haven't checked eBay yet, but I wonder if it's worth anything at all.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The weathermen totally messed up this weekend. They called for showers all day, but we ended up with a hot, sunny day - perfect for yardsaling! Because of that, we didn't run across a lot of last minute sales, but we still hit 32!

The first and best find of the day was the SNES games. The sale was located right on a main road (incidentally a sale we visited last year), the games were in a small storage bin (visible from the street), and Super Mario RPG was right on the top! When we asked how much, she said "I don't know, whatever you think is fair." We offered $5, and she took it, saying cheerfully, "I think you got a really good deal!"

Earlier, we came across an Atari 2600 with several games, asking $40. The older gent running the sale was adament about Atari's selling for $200. He didn't want to believe us when we told him he was wrong.

Today was funny, because we heard every one of our pet peeve responses when inquiring about video games. Most people say "No, sorry", and we're on our way. Here are some of those responses:
- "We already sold them all...last year/years ago"
- (Friend/Relative of seller) "Oh I have some! But I don't live around here."
- "I've got a bunch of that stuff, but I'm not selling it."

And for those overpriced games:
- "Oh, these go for X on eBay."

Relieved that Memorial Day weekend didn't damper the number of sales - we had a good day! Good luck guys, and enjoy the 3-day weekend! :D

It's amazing that you guys are able to find something retro game related on a weekly basis yardsaling. Although I'm sure at least half if not mosts of your finds are within the first hour of yardsales starting or earlier. I still can't help but wonder if you guys are the only ones in your area yardsaling with any interest in old games :) I know just this morning a sale I hit up just after 9 AM said they had a NES with about 6 games that they already sold and that kind of thing happened to me abit last year as well as afew times this year so far.

From the stuff you guys find ppl here probably think you guys never get those lines ;) I'm sure everyone has heard the sold them ages ago line alot and I also get alot of people that say "oh I should have brough my X games to sell" (X usually being Playstation 1 or 2). You forgot my favorite reply when asking about video games at a yardsale "Video Games? We Have Video Tapes." Oddly enough the one line I've never been given at a yardsale is the well it goes for this much on eBay.

snot i am laughing my ass off about the real stuffed dog, what the hell are people thinking had a good sale today

all these for 25 total
ps2-thug 2
nes-donkey kong classics
nes-smb
nes-tiger heli
7 other nes games
45-gen games
one genesis

the gem of the genesis games was toejam and earl
traded all the nes games and 20 of the genesis games for about 45 dollars

best deal i have had so far is a gameboy advace for the whopping price of .10 traded it in for 12 dollars, i think thats a 1200 percent profit

sorry still laughing about the real stuffed dog

The other weekend, my friend and I went to the local fleamarket, and a guy was trying to sell an Atari 2600 with around 10 games for $150 dollars. He kept claiming it went for "more than that on eBay". I was about to just ask why he didn't ebay it, but I would've gotten a BS answer.

We later picked up like 20 atari games for $10.

oh yeah i forgot about the atari t800 i saw, it was 30, and a n64 with 8 games for 75, guy got mad when i asked if it was 15, would have bought for that price not 75

Had a decent run today, I'll post up pics tomorrow but here's the breakdown. Hit about 40 or so sales. The major sale 100+ houses I didnt end up going to, but my dad went because he wanted to try and find a bike there. I told him to grab whatever gaming stuff he could find. And he didn't dissappoint, he picked up a translucent purple GBC for 3 bucks, and the most pristine NES system I've seen, 2 wired controllers, 2 Acclaim wireless controller, RF adaptor but no AC adaptor for 3 bucks as well. So now finally I've got an NES again.

As for me I hit up 2 street sales, the first one was a bust, the 2nd was decent. About 30 or so houses.

1st house, asked the kid there if he had any games, he pulled mario golf advance out of his pocket, said he wanted 5, I gave him 4, a bit pricey but whatever.

2nd house had a Dreamcast, 2 controllers with VMUs and 4 games, demo sampler, and web browser, he said his son wanted 20, I CIFed 10, settled on 15, fair enough, it boots well and now I have 4 VMUs and 4 official controllers and 2 working systems. Just have to find some good games lol.

3rd house I spotted a game gear with Jurassic Park and Sonic 2, I offered her 3 bucks, to which she said "Oh I only wanted 2 for it because it has no charger", so I responded "Fine I'll give you a buck instead," she took it. Also picked up a yellowed GB with some random game for a buck as well. And I also bought an old school Motorola flip-phone for 25 cents from her, hopefully I can get it to work on my network. I wish she had more games, this was the first time I met someone who priced their things below what I was willing to pay for them lol.

At another street, one house said they had a ton of games and systems that they wanted to sell, but first they wanted to sort them so they said come back next year. But I talked to the lady running the sale some more and she gave me her son's phone number, she told me to call him sometime this week to see what he wants to do with them.

On the same street I picked up a GBC from a kid who had no interest in it whatsoever for 4 bucks, I probably couldve gotten it for a buck, but it was early and I wasn't thinking lol. His father also gave me his number and told me to call him cause he wants to sell off his son's old Dreamcast and N64 games. So hopefully those will turn into something, just have to find the 2nd number.

So I pretty much picked up everything I saw today minus one NES. I asked this lady if she had any consoles, she told me she had a NES she might part with. 5 games, 2 controllers, console and hookups. The console was all stickered up with mario 3 stickers. I asked how much she wanted, she replied 40 dollars, cause "it's a good deal for that price" apparently. I offered her 15 bucks, to which she said she'd just keep it for her grandson. I tried to get her to part 1-2 of the games (Bomberman 2 and TMNT 2) but she wouldn't. Boourns.

I got a Saturn and a Genny 2 at the flea market today for $10 total. The Genny 2 has all the cables and two official controllers (old style). The Saturn also has all the cables and is a model MK-80000A (with the round buttons) with two official controllers (newer style). From what I've read it's junk, but it also has an Interact memory cart. I opened it at home to find that they left Virtua Fighter 2 inside. They're both pretty dirty, but the dude said they both worked, so I figured what the hell. I'll clean them up and see what happens.

100_0407.jpg.w300h225.jpg

Yesterdays finds:

Dreamcast system all hookups and one controller (nice and clean)
Fighting force 2 disc only
Spawn disc only
Street Fighter Double Impact disc only
Sega Genesis X-men 2 game - new sealed
Atari Jaquar game Alien vs Predator - new sealed

Total $11

Got to this sale and saw the DC and asked for a price. The kid tells me $5 and I reply with "Any controllers, any games?" So he breaks out the 3 DC games and points to a box on the side and says there's some new games in that box too. So I find the X-men and AVP marked $5 each. Not really thinking I take the Xmen and leave the AVP ( I do'nt have a jaguar) and go and CIF the kid with $6. After he accepts I think to myself that I've never seen any Jaguar stuff in any of my outings and then try and CIF him with $3 for the AVP which he declines and says he's gonna e-bay it if it does'nt sell for $5. I leave get about 2 blocks away turn around and come back and drop the $5 on the game thinking I can turn this for $20 easy or hold it for the long term

NES deck only - quite dirty but it cleaned up nice (no scratches or discoloration) it fired up the 1/2 dozen games I tested on it first time.
Paperboy game - cart only
Total - $2

Guy had the deck marked $5. I CIF him with $2 for both which he accepted

PC Games
Tribes 2
Descent 3
Theif
Gound control

These games were marked .50 each. I successfully CIF a $1

SNES Game
Breath of Fire - cart only
total $2

This one was a little tough cause I've been wanting this game for a while. The lady had 7 or 8 shit games, so i ask the price and she replies $7 each or take them all for $35. So I tell her that that's a steep price - yada yada yada. She looks a little surprised and says OK $5 each. I figure fuck it, I CIF her $2 which she replys with i gotta get at least $3. I'm thinking I ain't paying $3 for this game. so I tell her "listen I buy these games all the time for .25 or .50 a piece
$2 is a good price for this game and i really need this one for my collection" So then she's like "If you really want it you'll pay $3 for it" I reply "No I'll only pay $2" so then she says "OK do you want the other ones for $2 each?" I was totally like WTF after that and said no and thank you then left. The funny thing about this one was that it was a totally friendly haggle session and proves my point that some people have no clue on the value of stuff.

sega Nomad carrying case
total $1

I just missed a score on a Nomad and Sega CD plus 20 or 25 games.
when i saw the case I immmediately ask "wheres the system" the guy then tells me he just sold it about 15 minutes ago with the Sega CD a bunch of games. I say 'whats a bunch" to which he replied 20 or 25 games. fuck, I ask how much and he's like $20. I CIF him with $1 for the case and go home a little disappointed. Another Nomad would of been a nice score .

1977 Burger King Luke Skywalker glass
I CIF a quarter for this.

It was a really calm week, not that many sales. next week it should pick up if the weathers nice.

snotknocker, I can't believe you wouldn't cough up an extra $1 for a game you've been wanting. Hell, I probably would have buckled at $5. You are truly a king of cheapness.

Oh, and your new avatar suits you nicely ;)

It was not a matter of would'nt. It was a matter of I knew i did'nt have to.
I would of definately paid $3 possibly more. There was a point during that transaction that I knew I was not going to pay $3. I got a strong sense that she was gonna take the $2. I read her real good and my instincts told me she was gonna snap up the offer. I had to step up my rap a bit but I knew I was gonna get my game and she would be happy with $2. I think if those other games were not suck ass titles I probably could of got them all for $10. And thank you for the King of Cheapness comment, I think that's one of the highest compliments a CAG can get.

Snotknocker is my hero!

There was nothing going on yardsale wise around here this weekend - I went to one estate sale - not a singel game thing there - Hit up the only 2 yard sales I found in the area - one was a guy selling a garage full of old computer parts, but not a single game?!? He did have one of the nintendo clamshells that hold NES games, but it had an old modem in it and was splitting in the middle.

Congrats on all the good finds everyone - hopefully next weekend will be better

Small haul today from goodwill

For $7 I got all these for the NES

Ninja Gaiden
Golf
Popeye
Ikari warriors
Excite Bike
Wrath of the black manta
and Back to the future

1 Neo-Geo 1-slot MVS conversion cabinet
1 Puzzle Bobble (MVS, cart only)
1 Baseball Stars 2 (MVS, cart + mini-marquee)
Paid: $50

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our first arcade cabinet!

Got this from Craigslist (the ad is actually still up). Guy was asking $100, took $50. Apparently he had a friend who used to work in the arcade business, and this was a birthday present to his son about four years ago.

This cabinet was originally a Track & Field cabinet, and later converted to a Neo-Geo cabinet. It's in pretty decent shape, but we have plans of repainting it in the semi-near future (before the summer ends probably). We're thinking original Neo red for the whole cab. This makes up for the $50 Final Fight cabinet that we just missed out on a few weeks ago.

Nice to own some Neo hardware and software. The carts are huge! Here are a few comparison pictures with other things we had lying around:

Surprisingly, the MVS carts are the same size as the AES carts (home version), but their connectors are different.

Moiety and I played Puzzle Bobble (Bust-A-Move) while we waited for CAG to come back up. :)
