OFFICIAL 2006 Yard Sale Thread
He'll refuse it, "But I can get $70 on Ebay!"
The Guy Did not reply to my $10 offer i glad he did not take it because he kept on urging me to come over to his house in every email

any way i will only hit up one yard sale on saturday because i need to work(all I have in my yard sail budget is about $7 in change)

the one im going to is advertise as a BLOCK SALE

as wish you guys luck i hope you guys wish me and my Bag-0-CHANGE luck

Found this at good will for $2.50 during there half off sale. Its in perfect shape and looks brand new except that its missing the SNES reciever. Also had a guy walk up to me and wanted to know if I would buy a GBA SP. Even though I was looking for one I said no because it smelled as if he took a bath in weed and was probably just trying to hock some kids GBA for drug money.

Whoo boy, spent a lot today:

SNES Super Set in Box (missing Mario World, av cables)
All in box:
Zelda LttP (with map)
Yoshi's Island
Mario All Stars
Kirby Superstar
Donkey Kong Country
Illusion of Gaia (extra mint box, with instructions and map)
Super Mario Bros trucker cap (1988)
Asking $85, paid = $50

Zelda Collector's Edition GC = $10 (pawn shop)
Ico = $10 (pawn shop)
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed DVD Vol 5 = $2
.hack Infection complete PS2 = $1
Final Fantasy XI PS2 disc = $3

NES w/ 2 controllers and Zapper (no power)
Top Gun
Super Mario/Duck Hunt
Football
Ice Hockey
Paid = $3

Super Mario kid's bedspread = $1

The SNES lot came from the first sale of the day. I saw it, my jaw dropped... until I saw the prices: $25 for the system, $10 for each game. Boo! So I asked if they could make a better deal for the set. The woman said, "Hold on, let me ask my mother"
She does, and out comes a gaming granny (!), probably in her early 70s, who tells me that it was hers and that she kept good care of it, etc. I offered her $40, but she thought for awhile and countered $50. There are a few things missing, but I think I still got a decent deal... even though that's much more than I normally pay for anything at a yard sale.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Beautiful day, and we hit a decent amount of sales considering it's a holiday weekend. We rounded out the day with 39 sales.

Every now and then, we'll spot a sign for an "unadvertised" sale, and end up driving several miles off our route only to arrive at a crappy sale not worth the ride. Today was the exception, and reinforced the notion that it's always worth it to check. The sale was taking place in the house, and upon entering the basement, we spotted a TG game. Then to our horror, we looked down to see a middle-aged woman kneeling, holding the Turbo Express and several games.

As we were mentally cursing ourselves for being mere seconds too late, she looked up at us and smiled, "Oh, do you play these games? I'm looking for Turbo ... something games." Evilmax looked at the one he was holding and said, "Well this is one, but I was kinda planning on buying it." Then she asked, "Oh, well, do you want to buy these, too? I think these would be better suited with you." We stared blankly a moment, then asked, "Are you sure?" Without hesitation, she handed us what she was holding and said, "Definitely, go ahead," and left.

Afterwards, we raided the shelves of the SegaCD and Genesis games. The woman running the sale countered our $5 offer with $10, to which we settled on $7. Unfortunately, there was no SegaCD system in sight.

At another unadvertised sale, a young kid was selling a whole boxful of GameCube games for 2 bucks each, and guides for a dollar or free with the game. We were amazed by his awesome prices relative to other yardsales.

The woman selling the N64 games had several more, each bagged individually with their manuals and marked $3 each. The system was marked $15. I didn't think we would be buying anything from her, and was sure Super Smash would evade us again. We were somewhat surprised when she accepted our $2 offer, considering how she priced her games. But we were psyched to finally get Smash!

At a later sale, a woman had a card table with a bunch of Game Boy games on it. Upon closer inspection, there were 6 Pokemon Crystals, 3-4 each of Pokemon Blue, Red, Yellow, and Gold, and a couple other misc. games. Asking $5 each. It was funny not only because she had multiple copies of the same game, we had just picked up Crystal earlier COMPLETE for a buck. I still get amazed at how people price their games.

whoa, SF2 board game! :D and that Turbo express find isn't too shabby either ;)

I haven't been out in a few weeks since summer school started, but I'm gonna go sailing next friday and saturday.

Didn't get to hit any sales today (WAY too little sleep to wake up early enough to go to sales). Went to a local game store and picked up a MadCatz Dreamcast controller (to replace a broken one for one of our boys) for $6.99 + tax.

Later I stopped by a local Goodwill and picked up a Black Sega Dreamcast Sports Edition controller with a VMU in it for $3.99 + tax.

On the way home, I figured why not stop at one more Goodwill. I found a copy of Universal Combat for the PC for just $3.99 + tax (that still had the Fry's original $19.99 price sticker). Even if it sucks, it was just $4 to check it out...cheaper than an XBOX rental at Hollywood Video...lol.

My recent Goodwill/Savers haul (All PC Games):
$2.99 each:
X-Wing (Collector's Edition CD-ROM)
TIE Fighter (Collector's Edition CD-ROM)
X-Wing Alliance

$1.50 each:
Fallout
Star Control 3

I also got a Nintendo Game Boy Color carrying case for 2.99. It's in pristine condition, and it even came with the cardboard insert.
Probably hundreds of copies of super mario bros/duck hunt :)
at the thrift store i Got Myst pc Sealed and Lagoon(cart only) for the super nintendo

oh and on the video game store way over price i saw liberty city stories ps2 for $50

Decent find yesterday.

1 SNES complete w/3 controllers
Games all cart only.
Donkey Kong 1
Donkey Kong 2
Donkey Kong 3
Super Mario World
Mario is Missing
Super Mario All-Stars
Super Mario RPG

Sega Genesis 2 deck only w/ 2 controllers
6-Pak - cart only

SMS Altered Beast complete

2 - NES light guns

1 - Dreamcast gun

Stopped at a YS initially thought it would be a bust. there was lots of cups, plates and women crap stuffed animals and the like. On the ground under a table was a tall box with a stack of 30 or so magazines on top and a sign that said magazines .25. On the side of the box in black marker was the letters NINT. this prompted me to look inside. When I opened the box, the stuff was stacked vertically contollers and guns on top, then the genesis and at the bottom I saw the SNES. The SNES games were under the SNES and I did not know they were in the box until I got it home, it was quite the surprise. Anyway, I knew she could not be putting much value on the stuff, hell she was pushing magazines instead of the game goods. Without taking all of the stuff out of the box I held up a SNES controller and motioned to the lady (she was about 15 feet away) and was dealing with some ladies looking at glassware ."how much for this" She replies "how about .25?" I reply with will you take $3 for the box? She then says how about $5? Now $5 would of been a great deal but I knew instinctively she would take the $3. So leaving the box behind I walked over to her and CIF $3 saying I can only go $3. I think she was expecting the $5 when I initially whipped out the cash cause she was reaching for it before I said "I can only go $3. This was probably my best CIF deal though I did'nt know at the time.

I've kinda been cutting back lately with my yardsailing limiting, my time to 2 or 3 hours on Saturdays and being more selective on my purchases. My obsession with video game related bargain hunting has left my domicile packed high with boxes of gaming goodness and space is becoming an issue. I recently went thru some boxes in my basement and to my surprise there was 1 that had 8 NES decks in it that I can not for the life of me remember packing. Other boxes contained stuff I don't even remember buying. Kinda scary. Does any one have issues of losing track of there YS finds?

Moiety: When I saw that Turbo Express, I flipped off the screen in jealousy.

Anyway, my weekend pickups:

Bah, the Fallout CD is partly rotted, and I get CRC errors everytime it tries to read or copy an important file to the hard drive. Well, it's off to the torrents for me.

Had a pretty decent find yesterday at a Thrift Store:

2nd Generation SNES (very clean with all hook-ups and a controller)
Super Mario All-Stars (clean, cart only)
Super Mario World (clean, cart only)
Goof Troop (clean, cart only)

$12
Tbizzy, how did you manage to get Guitar Hero for $13? Awesome deal! :)
Yard saling in a richie development, apparently it was some little boys and he 'didn't understand' and there were 'too many buttons':lol::lol:

Maybe it didn't seem stellar to me since I already had Super Mario All-Stars and 2-3 copies of Super Mario World. I really just wanted the mini SNES.

The small SNES is definitely worth $12.

Pawn shop stuff goes here, I guess.

Theres this pawn shop nearby where I work that has a pretty good selection of video games, but nothing great. I had just eaten dinner at McDonalds (two double cheeseburgers = delicious) and was on my way back to work. The pawn shop was on the way back, I had 10 minutes left for dinner, so I thought "What the heck?"
I swing in, I'm looking through the selection and not seeing anything interesting. PS2 and XBox games for more than I would get them for at GS or EB. Then I notice some games on a lower shelf I hadn't seen before. I check it out. Game on top: Constantine for the PS1. Yippie. I check the game underneath it.

My head explodes.
Ffvii-boxart.jpg

Final Fantasy VII, complete, disks in near mint condition. Price? $10. :hot:

So I check my wallet. fuck! Only $9! So I ask the guy "Can I pay with debit card?" He says "Sure, but there's a $15 minimum." FF7 goes for $40+ on EBay, so I'm NOT letting this go. So I dig some more in this shelf. Lo and behold, for another $10...

capcom-snk_front.jpg

Capcom VS SNK Millenium Fight 2000 (import), complete, with mint disk.
My head explodes some more.

In the end I picked up both those games for $21.00 after tax.
Freakin sweet.

If anyone in the Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor area ever wants some company I would love to tag along and would split gas expenses. Love garage sales but suffered some social disabilties as a kid that kept me from getting my driving liscense so I cant go to any right now.

Well, this isnt exactly a yard sale find as much as it is a "pre-yard sale save"....My friend was going to sell a bunch of his older video game gear at a garage sale before he moves out of state and I just happened to stop by while he was packing it up.......

I grabbed:

N64 (w/hook ups but no controllers)
Turok
Mario 64
Mario Kart 64
Extreme G
Zelda Ocarina of time
Starcraft 64
Aerofighters Assault

Super Nintendo (w/hookups and 1 controller)
Super Ceasars Palace
Donkey Kong Country
Sim City
Jeopardy
John Madden Football
Yoshi's Island
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest

2 NES's (all hookups, 2 controllers, 1 grey light gun)
Ninja Turtles
Final Fantasy
Tecmo Bowl
Mario/Duck Hunt
Skate or Die

1 Sega Genesis (no games/hook ups)

1 RCA av selector (new in package)

And a bag of random cables, power packs, and av hookups for systems he didnt own.

All for the low low price of FREE! Super sweet!

holy shit Evilmax's pictures!! where the F do you guys live cause here in Jersey everyone knows what shit is worth and prices are insane.

GREAT POST!!!! My wife and I are die-hard garage sailers and we're out every weekend. I can't reinforce what Moiety has said but I'll put in my 2 cents and hope I don't repeat anything he/she said.

-- Do be friendly when you approach a sale; ask how things are going; if it's a moving sale, ask where they're moving to, why, etc. The worst thing is when someone just walks up to a sale, walks around, doesn't say a damn word and then just leaves.

-- NEVER pay full price. Always haggle. You wouldn't believe what you can get. We will be down to our last 50 cents and my wife will pull over for "one more sale" and walk away with an armload of stuff.

-- CHECK THE FREE BOX! You might hit it big! I found an XBOX controller memory card inside one and I'm still using it.

-- Be sure you can walk away from a deal if they won't negotiate. They do want to sell it, right? If they pull the old "Do you know how much this goes for on eBay?" you have to remind them that this venue is NOT eBay...in a nice way.

-- Games are usually overpriced, even old sports games. You have to really work them over to get a good deal. But I did get a PSOne for $3.00 once. Really.

-- Saturdays ARE the big day....but don't forget about Sundays. We call that "trolling" when people are basically GIVING stuff away. Things that were too expensive (even games) on Saturday will go down in price just to move it out of the house.

I've seen trends where garage sales occur DURING the week, sometimes on Thursdays. Don't be afraid to outside your area, maybe to a better part of town--but expect to pay more.

Great info and I agree. Prices go down as the garage sale goes on and they become more likly/resonable to/with negtions. Going to a better part of town doesnt always mean paying more either. Alot of the richie areas those people do have no idea how garage sales work and ask $10 for something that at any other sale is $0.50. However, sometimes its the opposite. Sometimes you get rich people who simply want this crap out of their house and don't wnat to deal with driving it to the salvage army or tossing it out, so they just put it on the lawn with crazy low prices.

I will agree with the "check the free box" statement. I went to this whole saler who buys clearence crap from stores and sells them cheap. Well if some box is ripped or open they just throw it in the free box. I decided to look in there one day and what do I find but a black game cube controller, duke xbox controller, and the GBA-GC connector cable.

I'm jealous of all of you. I'm 13, have no car, bike's tire is flat, am home all day, and wouldn't even know where to start.

That has inspired me, havent been to a yard sale since 1999 when I had one and sold a bunch of trash for enough money to buy beer and pizza for everyone. One guy did get a good deal from me, he paid $11 for a leather jacket. Of course the jacket had a casino logo on it, was brown and looked kinda 80s, was free and I never wore it so I guess we both lucked out that day

I decided to copy your idea and made a similar post on craigslist in my area. I just made it about half an hour ago, and already got a response saying:

"I have a lot of old game systems, games, controllers, little bit of everything.

Would you be interested in coming by and taking a look?"

sounds promising :D

I consistently find clueless people and serious bargains in NJ. I'm in Middlesex County. I usually sail through Middlesex, Monmouth and Union counties. If I remember correct I think you posted you were from South Jersey a while back. Maybe you need to make the trip North one day.

Ya iv already gotten two messages overnight, one has alot of potential but the other just wants ebay prices. And thanks for the tip but duh to going in peoples houses hehe.

More so thanks for freecycle, seems a great site and I posted an ad there too.

Great thread. I've done similar threads on gametz.com exclusively for pawn shops in the past. A few things have changed, but still a lot of great deals out there...

I have found the local pawn shops are starting to catch onto ebay/gamestop pricing with a very hardline tilt, i.e., if you won't pay the $8 for a N64 controller, someone eventually will... which is to say it has become important to just be able to walk away if they won't cut you a deal. Even though we may not see the same level of incredible NES and SNES deals around here, it does seem like there will be a ton of used PS2 and XBox games that will be easy to come by in the next few years..
