Official 2009 Yard Sale Thread
No. It would be over 10000 posts.

Just wait until next year and have an encompassing topic that's stickied.
There in lies the problem and it's only August
(mind you kuros, I'm a fan and appreciate/enjoy your posts).
I now prefer the separation due in part to the different mindset and to much a degree the strategies shopping in each "treasure" environment.
Mind you, the occasional picture including non yard sale finds is fine by me, my goodness the time it takes for the picture and notations...well it is just a bonus...
but now that non yard sale posts are over a year established...it seems to work...
you want feedback on your craigslist find(s)...move it to the craigslist thread and see what happens...quite a few craiglisters do not yard sale....

just my 3 cents...

The only thing I would suggest is merging the thrift and pawn shop threads, so this leaves one for yard sales, one for craigslist and one for thrifts/pawns which is reasonable and should make it easier to figure out where you should put your find posts.

Taking pictures of this stuff is cumbersome and time consuming, I have to spend enough time getting it all cleaned up so often I don't have time to take a picture of the stuff. Not to mention this stuff tends to pile up really fast so there isn't always room to shoot a picture of your latest find when you have piles of stuff waiting to be sold on ebay. If its something very unusual, or a completely unbelievable find then I will take pics so I don't get the "pics or it didn't happen" line. The bulk of the stuff people here are familiar with what it looks like.

never been true "garage sailing" - just walk to yard sales i see in my neighborhood (i can't drive yet and there are no good yard sales within biking/walking distance, but i cleverly convinced my mom to take me "garage sailing" by telling her i want to do it for quality time with her. worked like a charm. ill see how it goes, wont be for quite a few weeks, though.

PLEASE ANSWER: do yard sales typically continue through september? thats the soonest my mom can start taking me. im in nj so it does get cold, but the cold really starts in like november.

I agree with you on both points. The Thrift and Pawn Shop threads could be merged without a problem. I hope whoever ends up making the thread next year will remember this.

Also, I think taking pictures of your finds is kind of stupid. I mean, I do it, but it's for my own narcissistic pleasure. I put them under spoilers, so no one has to look at them.

Hi, all. I have been doing yard sailing for a while now, but just discovered this thread. Spent a whole day reading the previous pages of it, and what I have to say is WOW some of you guys have really hit the jack pot. Anyway I also noticed that some of the same people (like Kuros or desert hound) have always been sort of in with the conversation, and I wonder if this was because they were in the thread from the beginning. I hope you people can "accept" me into the thread and listen to my coming finds, because I love to read yours' and I think it should go both ways. I won't be hitting any garage sales until September as I am going away for a long vacation, but I will definitely share success stories that I have, and... failures ... which seem to happen a bit too often :) NOW to contribute to the actual current conversation.
Ok I just briefly checked out the other "finds" threads, and I decided I think it should stay the way it is. I mean, the Craigslist thread has over 100 pages, and it's only half way through the year. I think it's okay to occasionally post Craigslist finds on this thread or vise versa (especially if you do both CL and GSing) but don't do it permanently.

WHAT

the whole reason i even bother to read this thread is to see the pictures of our finds. i love seeing all the stuff laid out... the boxes, the "scars", the colors/box art/designs...

the last thing i want is to read page after page of "found 3 PS1 games nothing that good though better luck next week lolol", or the ever-popular one-hit wonders that bounce in here, mention they "scored Earthbound with box, NES Championship cart and 6 sealed copies of Chrono Trigger" and then bounce right out without another word.

sure, i want to read stories about successes and failures, but lend some credibility and "pop" to your posts with corresponding photos. it's more fun and it's become a sort of tradition.

Thinking it's kind of stupid doesn't mean I don't enjoy everyone's pictures. In fact, I enjoy looking at everyone's pictures for all the reasons you listed. The yard sale thread wouldn't be the same without the pictures of everyone's finds.

I'm a walking contradiction, I know.

crazy pickup today at a neighbourhood sale, someone left behind a used 26' toshiba lcd tv marked for 120 at the end of the day and nobody claimed it(callled all of them) so i kept it =D Also picked up about 40 MS point cards which were partially unused(range between 200 to 2800) for 10 bucks ive already got 1400 points out of them.

whew... glad that's all cleared up...? ;)

Yeah, I agree on coming ITT for pictures. I hardly ever give a shit if someone has only typed up a paragraph of poorly written text.

Pictures allow you to fully appreciate (or envy) the person's find.

I completely agree. It's not even that I want the pictures for evidence. Reading stories of seemingly the same finds over and over again would be boring. The pictures make each story unique.
I'm honestly too lazy to post pictures unless its a really good day.
Like finding a pair of Gucci shoes and a vintage Rush t-shirt?

SO I moved to a new town last saturday, I went sailing today and everything here is twice as junky and twice as expensive....weird because this town is nicer than my old one....

Yard sales go until whenever the weather quits being co-operative at least here. I am in NY and we go till October or so weather permitting. You will find that sales tend to wind down towards the end of the season though.

Oh and I yard sale with my mom so don't be embarrassed, it really helps to have 2 people, you will miss things that the other person will spot that you missed provided the other person knows what you are looking for, make sure you educate her on what a video game is if she doesn't know. Plus you will also be looking for different things occasionally which will make it more worthwhile if one of you doesn't get anything the other person will usually buy something making the trip worth it.

Yeah. I'll go yard sale-ing with whoever, since I don't drive either. My dad and I go a lot, he usually finds something or other even if he never uses it. Other times my mom and sometimes my great aunt will go along. Around town, I head out with my sister as she's always looking for different stuff and will pick up games and hold them until I look if she gets to them first.

Anyway, just got back. I picked up an Intec racing wheel for my dad. It was $5, but still in the box and works on his PS2, PS1, as well as my XBox and the Gamecube which my sister keeps talking about buying.

After taking that home, I went back out to a bunch more, but only picked up a copy of Dark Sector for the 360 for $8. It's in excellent shape, it looks like someone opened it and never played it.

I saw some fairly crappy XBox games at a stand at the local fair, some PC games and four worthless PSOne titles for $2 (Fighting Force, fake case and nothing else, Xtreme Racing, Army Men in 3D and Nuclear Strike). Oh, and the first gen PSOne for $10 with all the hookups at another one.

Hopefully tomorrow's a little better.

darkslime, you may have just opened a can of $hit you didnt want to talking about only buying games to ebay, lol. but we all know, we all do it.

Went to a yard sale today. I didn't think I would make it to anymore until late August but found two a block down from me so went. The only things they had that were video-game related were things to do with Pokemon, and they had a hell of a lot of things that had to do with Pokemon! Passed on the cards.
N64:
Pokemon Stadium with guide
Pokemon Stadium 2 with guide
N64 transfer pak
Gameboy:
Pokemon Blue with clear case
Pokemon Special Pikachu Edition with clear case
Pokemon Silver Version with clear case
Pokemon Gold with clear case
Pokemon Red with clear case
Pokemon Crystal with clear case
Pokemon Pinball
Pokemon Silver guide
Pokemon Crystal guide
Pokemon Gold guide
(2x) Pokemon Trainer's guide
Gameboy Gameshark Pro
Gameboy Advance SP link cable
Pokemon Stadium official guide
Pokemon Gold/Silver official guide (collectors edition)
Pokemon Red/Blue official guide
Other:
2 SNES cases (sort of look like VHS cases, but say "Super NES" on them) - free (not pictured)

TOTAL: $65

Asked how much for everything, the guy said $80 and he didn't look like he wanted to lower it, so I CIF'd $65. They took it =] I think I'll resell most on eBay for a profit. Do you guys think this was a good find?

img2939s.jpg

The other yard sale had a factory sealed GBA marked $50. Tried to go down to $25. Didn't budge. So I took it for $50. I think I'll be keeping this one. Either for the collection
or just because I am pretty sure it will only gain value over the years as it becomes more and more rare. Right now it goes for about $100 on eBay. What would you do?

img2940y.jpg

Shit I can't find the cord to connect my camera to the computer. Maybe when I find it (IF I find it), I'll post the pics.

Hey, check out this NES I'm selling on ebay, I bought it at a garage sale for $5. http://cgi.ebay.com/Nintendo-NES-Ne...ames?hash=item4a99a53ea8&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14

those random carts i have for sale were also from a garage sale.

IMO if you go to garage sales and don't resell anything you're a fucking stupid, not wanting to make money...

I personally sell doing auctions and not "Buy it Now" on eBay, because I used to buy on eBay and most of the time when I was looking for something to buy I would click Auctions only because I would assume Buy it Now would be overpriced, and I think other buyers probably think the same as me. But, I am sure someone will at least look if not buy the system, and if you have to sell it cheaper you can definitely sell it for more than $5! Great find, by the way!

I agree with you on the not reselling being stupid. I only keep a few things, which for the most part I am also keeping to resell, but waiting until they gain even more value.

PS had to cut out the URL because I was not allowed to post it (new user rule, sucky)

I don't sell via auction because auctions don't end high enough a lot of the time, at BIN you are guaranteed a price, and I have sold multiple NES at that price, usually have to wait a few weeks though but someone will buy it.

Alright, maybe I'll try it sometime.

Just remembered a good deal I got. Not a yard sale find, but also not a Craigslist find, nor a Pawn find, my friend sold it to me. It was a Game Boy Advance SP (dark blue, no backlight, some scratches) with 7 games for $17.00. I was going to give her $38 but she felt like I was over paying (which I was) and told me to take it for $17. The games were good ones like Mario and stuff, too! I think I probably would have sold it for $60 if I hadn't bundled the games with different systems. TIP: BUY FROM CLUELESS FRIENDS WITH VIDEO GAMES!
some of us dont have time to sell at the magnitude you do slime..we have jobs
I sell 3 or so things at a time, so I don't have to look like an idiot with a cart of 15 boxes at the post office. But if you have a shipping scale which I am planning to buy soon I can see where you would sell 15 or so things at one time, so you can leave them out for the mailman instead of having to transport them all to the post office.
some of us dont have time to sell at the magnitude you do slime..we have jobs
one has nothing to do with the other. it is so impossibly quick and easy to list and ship these days that anyone with a full-time job and a mind to do it can offer many items for sale consistently.

2x Tiger Handhelds - .20
FunPack (PC Game) - .50
NBA Jam (SNES) - .25

First few small finds early starting out the day slow, all IAP.

Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition, The (GC, No Manual) - $3

Was $4 but got for $3 mentioning the missing manual this was pretty late probably about 12:30.

SNES System & Games - $10

Asked about games late in the day at a house and this was brought out. Offered $5 which was countered with $10 which I took.

Non Find BS

Got out to about 25 sales even though I got out about an hour and a half late, only missed 2 sales on my list at the end of the day.

Only really interesting unique thing today was a guy that mentioned he sold a few Intellivisions at garage sales in previous years and was telling me he used to make them at a place nearby (this something I didn't know about). He made it sound like it was a big secret back then. Funny story but it could have been true he did mention B-17 Bomber and how that was cutting edge at the time.

The funniest part about the SNES find was an older lady that was trying to back seat negotiate the deal. She asked me what I do with the games & how much they were worth before it was brought out, if this was her house & stuff I could picture her taking my number and never calling. A guy who must have been the dad of the house was who I was dealing with. When he said ten the lady was like that's just for the system right and seemed a bit upset at it being too cheap in her opinion. After she did this I just kind of double checked with the guy and made sure he was cool with $10 which he was. He wanted it gone but Grandma wanted them to sell it for what she figured it was worth.

Some over priced stuff I saw today (for anywhere not just a yardsale) all from sales advertising games. First sale today "video games" advertised. Mostly Xbox games with some PSP games & movies $10 each or 3 for $20, nothing special in the mix. Another sale advertising GameBoy & PS1, a Playstation with 2 controllers & 5 kids games - $60. Not as bad but they had a GBA SP with 9 crap games for $40. They also mentioned a GBC that sold but I'm sure it wasen't anything special with what was left and how much it was.

This sucks - OVER 300 fucking yard sale listings in my area on Craigslist (check for yourself - Central NJ, craigslist) and only TWO in my town! Neither of which are advertised with video games being there. It sucks being underage (no driving for me!). The mother doesn't want to go because my Grandpa had heart surgery early this week and she's still stressed, though he is fine. Ugh. The next time she said she could go is in September, when there won't be nearly as many sales.

QUESTION - how do you casually ask if the seller has any video games inside? I can't think of a good way to do it but I keep hearing success stories based on doing that. "Hey, I didn't see any video games out here for sale, and even though most people put out everything they have for sale for display in the yard sale, I thought MAYBE you decided to hide some things that are for sale in your house so that people like me would have to ask for you to get them." Yeah, I don't think that one will exactly charm anyone (didn't actually say that to anyone, thank god)

if i don't see any games out, i always ask, "selling any video game stuff?", sometimes followed by, "you know, anything that didn't get brought out yet?". usually, they'll just say no, and sometimes they'll say they didn't even think of it (at which point they may or may not go inside and bring it out). sometimes they'll say something like, "just what's out here" or "only if you see it out here already", to which i'll reply, "well, some people think video game stuff doesn't sell well so they don't bring it out." (which is absolutely true).

i've never had anyone become irritated or offended that i asked.

Just a couple sales I hit today after work...

not high at all for complete Pokemon games. nice one!

only stopped by 1 yardsale today since i was only out to get Madden 2010 so i could play some before i had to work, ask for games and the lady says "nope kids use to sell all that stuff to the gamestop" and "someone else asked earlier". im thinkin its probably been a good thing i havent wasted gas going to many sales this summer since someone else around here is asking for games.

Hit 11 yard sales this morning, but only found a couple things. I picked up a Jodi Picoult book for the girlfriend and...

Ms. Pac-man (Atari) - Sealed - $0.75

kind of random find as it was the only video game at that yard sale. It was actually the only video game out of all the yard sales.
I don't have an atari or collect any of the games, so not really a great find for me, but maybe somebody here would be interested in it.
You're back already? I was just about to leave!
haha I had to go really early since I have to leave at 9 for church >.>

Went out today for some yard sales. There were only about 7 within walking distance (which is my only option). Went to 5 of them. One had 2 PSP games ($10 each, nothing good). Passed. Another had a few PSP games and a few GC games, nothing exciting. Asked how much. The old lady said $40 for all. I told her GC games were pretty old now, and that the PSP things were movies so they were not worth much. I asked $15. She told me $30 and told me to come back later if they weren't sold. She didn't want to lower them because apparently someone had come by earlier and picked up one. I told her it might have been a really good game. It was Mortal Kombat she said. Damn. Always miss the good stuff. Those were the only ones with anything video game related. All I got was exercise and 3 bad blisters. I think I'll go back out (and bike this time) to some ones I saw signs for.

There were 7 total GC/PSP games. How much would you have offered? One of the games was GTA. The rest was crap.

Did see a guy on a bike yell fuck YOU to an old lady who almost backed into him. That made the trip worthwhile :)

EDIT: Just went back to the garage sale and the lady still had 5 / 7 games there. She asked how much I could pay and I told her $10 (a bit overpaying for what the games were). Anyway, she bit.
PSP:
GTA Liberty City Stories
UMD Video - Family Guy Stewie Griffin The Untold Story
UMD Video - Beavis and Butthead
Gamecube:
Tony Hawk's Underground
Tony Hawk's Underground 2

TOTAL: $10.00

By the way I found the cable for the camera that connects it to the computer (RIGHT after I bought one from eBay). So I'm going to post some pics.

img2943p.jpg

Doesn't look like it worked... how do you guys post pics? I posted mine on flikr then put in the URL for it where it said put in the URL for the pic, and now it's a little blue box with a question mark in it.

Very weak week. I'm really busy so my sales visits have dropped . . . might be this way the rest of the summer :whistle2:(

Anyway, I hit about 20 sales on Fri and Sat and this was my only game find (other stuff was so-so as well).

081409PS1games.jpg

Nice to find 3 of these complete but all discs are scratched . . . might be able to buff them. I paid $2 for all 4.

I just use imageshack to post pics, seems to work well

Just got back. I had my sister along so we stopped off at a parking lot sale I was at yesterday. The dude said then he was going to try and find some more stuff to sell. He had a bit more out and I snatched up The Ultimate Bruce Lee Collection for $4, which made the trip worth it. I'm pretty big into kung fu and only have a crappy set of Chinese Connection/Fists of Fury, which I paid more for. Plus, at that price, I could even flip it on amazon for $5.

I then hit up a fairly disappointing basketball team trip sale. I was hoping for a good selection, but almost of it was stuff the mothers brought out like knickknacks. Only game I saw was THPS2 on the PC. My sister found a pair of shoes, so that stop wasn't a total waste.

EDIT: Oh and FOnewearl, that grandmother sounds brutal. I hate it when people nose in. Besides, there pretty much two types of yard sale runners, imo. People who wanna make a quick buck and people who just wanna get rid of stuff. I tend to leave the first type fairly quickly as most don't even have good selections. There are some middlegrounds like ones raising family funds for vacations or ones that are selling crap cheap but their kid's stuff goes for a little more. I don't mind paying a little more to a kid for video games if they have something I want, and will almost always grab a lemonade.

nice find! If you want to make a profit you could make back all the money you spent + $$$ by just selling Marvel Super Heroes game. Surprisingly Mortal Kombat isn't worth much on ebay (like 7 bucks maybe), and I can't tell what the other 2 games are. But I would say if you ebay the 2 games i said they would easily sell for total $30 (minus fees/shipping). That would have been a strong week for me :)

PS thanks for the image hosting site leftwing.

one looks like X-men vs Street fighter, I think it was the game that spawned Marvel vs. Capcom. It used to be worth some $$$$.

Since you guys were talking about how text-only posts are boring...

Went a LONG time without finding anything today but got some decent stuff in the end.
Miyazaki DVD's: Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Nausicaa, Castle In The Sky - $2 each
Gameboy games: Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, Zelda Oracle of Ages - $2 each
Xbox games: Blinx, Atari Anthology - $2 each
Sonic paperweight (basically a smaller version of the bank I found earlier this year, lol) - $0.25
Ti-83 Calculator - $15, looks new and works great
Free stuff: Sonic Adventure 2 Cuts Unleashed soundtrack, Big the Cat figure, broken Action Replay DS (not pictured)

Early on I found a NES with Zapper and around 15 games but the old lady wanted $50, it's down the block from my house so I'll be returning later in the day to see if she's more open to bargaining, assuming it's still there.

No pictures unless you guys poidh me (cause it's crazy hard work), but I didn't find any video game stuff at the yard sales today. I did get:

Dean Koont'z Whispers (for the wife) - $.50
Robert Ludlum's Bourne Ultimatum (wife) - $.50
Thomas Harris's The Silence of the Lambs(wife)(movie cover, unfortunately) - $.50
Lightning McQueen plushie(the wife has been on a Disney kick lately) - $.50
Harry Potter 5 (the only one my mom didn't have) - $1
Official iPod headphones(lost mine) - $.50
Batman Begins Hot Wheels Batmobile(sealed of course) - $1
1966 Shelby Cobra Hot Wheels(fancy box, also for my wife) - $2

All in all, not much for myself. But in a non-yard sale find, I stopped by the Pawn shop and got 7 CDs and an amazing video game find. Check the "Tales of the Pawn Shop" thread for that, though.

Stopped by about five yard sales that had been posted on craigslist and came away with the following:

Sienfeld Seasons 1-3
N64 complete in box with 2 controllers, all wires, and Majoras Mask (with box), Turok 2 (complete), Mario Kart 64, and some random games
Ocarina of Time (complete)
Final Fantasy VII Black Label (complete) MINT

Total: $30

Overall easily worth it considering I can sell the N64 and Final Fantasy 7 and make a nice profit overall, while keeping stuff I did not have.
