Hilarious, as if she would have gotten more at Gamestop anyways, she would have gotten nothing and probably laughed at. Anyways the price was low enough for me I would have bought at least Goldeneye, Space Invaders and the 3 you picked out. I have done well enough reselling N64 games where I can never have too many of them.
so you ripped her off? lol.
Not really. I told her the prices I normally pay before I saw what the games were. She decided on $1 each. I prefer to think of it as Irony...;)

EDIT: I just finished my pics and it will have to be 4 posts. Sorry everybody. I knew I bought a lot of stuff this weekend.
I told her the prices I normally pay before I saw what the games were.
Nicely played . . . good to keep your hand hidden (in terms of value or your objectives).

I thought you were right in the games you rejected, but it turns out you should've grabbed Goldeneye:

http://www.amazon.com/Golden-Eye-00...DMAT/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1306278719&sr=8-1

I'm pretty sure they used to sell for less but they have increased over time.

^^^Yeah, I noticed that too. I mean you "have to have" goldeneye if you own a N64, but that also means every person who owned the system should have a had a copy. You would think more copies of the game lasted rather than the consoles, but I guess this is one of those cases were value is based on quality, rather than supply.

I did pass on something I should have definitely bought. A lady had a PlayStation 1 with 6 or 7 kiddie games, but she had this controller:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Playstation-Dua...t=Video_Games_Accessories&hash=item255d389c78

She wanted $20 and wouldn't budge. I actually bought several things from her -the 50 cent DVDs and some of the 25 cent VHS -probably about $12 worth of stuff (some hasn't been posted yet), but she wouldn't deal on anything. I meant to go back, but I forgot with the other issues I had going on this weekend.

If it was a PSOne, I would have bought it, just because I do not have one, but I couldn't pull the trigger with 6 PS1 systems stacked at my house unsold.

Saw some of you guys talking about storage unit auctions, so I thought I'd share today's purchase. fair warning...no video game content.

Bought a PODS storage unit today at auction. It was the last of 4 units, and after getting outbid on one that looked like a whole house neatly packed and full of stacked boxes, this one had trash falling out on the guy that cut the lock. There were only 8 bidders total there, and they mostly just scoffed at it (in comparison to the first 3, this really did look like a dumpster haul) No one was giving any bids, and the auctioneer was winding it down...got all the way down to $5, still no one, so I finally said what the heck and said $5. I figured one of the regular guys with the big trucks would step in and take it for $10. nope. It was all mine for $5, and they gave me crap for buying trash.

here's the view from the door:

photo.jpg

pretty bad, right? well, after I hauled away a pick up load of trash from the front (posted a curb alert on craigslist, and you'd be surprised what people will haul away for free...) I got to the back and found the stuff that no one could see from the front. There were 2 antique looking end tables that were carefully wrapped up in moving blankets, 2 hope chests, that unfortunately were not wrapped and got damaged from the humidity, BUT, they were carefully packed with electronics and household decorative odds and ends. found 2 dvd playes, an old school boombox, a VCR, a queen size air mattress new in the box (the kind with that velour covering), an inflatable raft and pump new in the box, a couple plastic totes full of kids toys, and a couple totes that were filled with decoritive stuff from Big lots, and they all had their tags still attached. So for $5.35 (had to pay tax, as I do not have a reseller's tax ID....yet.) and an afternoon of work, I think my next yardsale is going to do pretty well

Got another auction on Thursday, hoping for another bargain!

Passed on a Laserdisc lot w/receiver . Some like 40 or 50 Laserdiscs for $25. Don't know much about laserdisc so thats why I passed.

That is so funny. I would have bought it too! Wicker is worth money if it is old...do you still have it? I would guess it is not old because of the wood support. Old wicker tends to be supported by its own weave, but I am not an expert on the subject.

That's cool that it worked out for you!

Still have the wicker stuff...I have no idea how to tell how old it is, but one of the chairs is so bad off it was crumbling under the weight of my hand. There is a bench that is still pretty sturdy that I was wondering if I could spray paint it and make it presentable enough for someone to want it.
One of the things that caught my eye and had me hopeful was right in front in the grey tote, you can see green plastic and a black plastic wheel. I recognized it as a mattel wheel from the early 70's. I knew it was used on vehicels for Barbie, Big Jim, and a couple other brands. Turns out it was a Barbie Beach Bus. One of those ones with vinyl walls held together by plastic parts...fold it open to have a play set, fold it closed into a van. It was broken in sooo many pieces though. I had hoped that with one vintage toy, there might be more, but the totes of toys I found look like 90's and newer stuff.
^Unless you're being sarcastic, those are the same Smurf lunchboxes.
Can you honestly not tell the difference between plastic and metal?

There is spray paint that is specifically made for wicker. Some "outdoor wicker" is already coated though. Krylon makes it, I believe.

I actually saw a lady walking off with one of those Barbie buses this weekend. I asked the person who was running the sale and she said the lady paid $40 for it, so I didn't feel too bad. It's a shame yours wasn't in good shape, but you definitely will come out ahead from the unit!
I thought for sure that the KFC record would be worth something but they don't appear to sell on ebay :whistle2:(

Too bad your Smurf lunchbox isn't this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-1983-SM...408?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aab1b17d0
That album is tricky. It can go from $10-$25 for that particular one. I think it books for $30-$40, but I do not have a record guide ATM. They did the promo albums for a number of years, but yeah it definitely is not selling anytime soon! I'll probably keep it since it is old and in good shape.

Update: I emailed the lady with the PlayStation and it is still available and she still wants $20 for it.

I'm sure that it does better around the holidays.
Are there even plastic lunchboxes that are worth money?
Not yet! But there is a Smurfs movie coming out and everything from the 80s is coming back, so I picked it up. Rambo was the last metal lunchbox and the first plastic one I think.

OK here is post number 2 of 4.

Everything was supposed to be .25 each except for the puzzle and game that were supposed to be .50 each.

Well, where are you at now?

$10.50 by my count.

Sounds Good!

Obviously. It was just an overlook on my part. I apologize.

You know the drill...

This is likely to end up being my best (nongaming) find of the whole seaon.

After I found these great (many oop) Motown CDs on Friday, I stopped back and bought some more on Saturday. The woman running the sale told me about her friend who is the source of the CDs and said he had more in storage but couldn't find the key (the storage is upstairs from her downtown card shop). So, I gave her my number thinking that nothing would come of it. She calls me on Sunday morning. And I go over and there are no new CDs but I did get to meet the guy. I bit of drag, but on the other hand I was happy she used the number. I think the guy is a reforming hoarder.

Monday evening she calls and we set up a time on Tuesday.

Holy Cow! Hundreds of additional CDs.

This is most of the additional discs. I dropped $260 on Tue. to go with the $80 I spend on Fri. and Sat.

Other than a couple duds (2 that I've identified) nothing is under $5 in value on Amazon . . . with most being over $10 (90%) and probably half in the $20 or above range. The only problem is that they will be slow sellers. I 'm just staring to list them. I have sold 3 for a total of $55. Best of all, the discs are all mint or near mint . . . which makes for easy listing and shipping. So, I got over 300 cds with solid listing value.

Nice find on the CDs. Aside from scouring Amazon for prices, how do you know which ones are desireable? I've started picking up soundtracks from pre-mid 90's and jazz if I can get them cheap enough based on what you have mentioned here.

Went digging through some of the totes from that storage unit today, and to my surprise, I *did* find some more vintage toys. They were buried under a bunch of beanie babies and happy meal toys. I remember my sister playing with these when we were kids...these are from back in the early 70's. So that broken up vinyl barbie beach bus I saw in the front really was a sign of some old toys  I should do well with these on Ebay...there's even an identification guide included so it should help with listing them. There was also a neat Bozo the clown rod puppet type thing, but it's missing the head, and so far I haven't found it anywhere.

Can't wait to get to tomorrows auction so I can tell a couple of those guys that laughed at me for buying a dumpster unit that my $5 gamble is going to net me a few hundred bucks.

Personally, I'd go the other direction and make sure they know what a big mistake you made.

Honestly, why get them more pumped up for every single auction?

I better post last weekend's finds before hitting the road again.

There was a large highway sale starting in a city 25 miles away. For this event my mother and little sister were in tow so I was not expecting to find much since the pace would be slower.

We show up at the first sale which is a large community sale at about 9:00. The first booth I came upon was just setting up and the lady was bringing out boxes full of complete SNES games. There were roughly 60 SNES games and some PS1 games with a price of $2 each. I asked how much for the whole lot and she says $80. I take a closer look and realize most are sports games and decide to cherry pick.

I was happy to find Return Fire but unfortunatly the box had been cut in half for use as a rental. WTF?! All the games are former rentals and have stickers in various places. I'm not even sure if I should have purchased these.

Next I run into a family sale with some minty PS1 games for $1 each.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
The kids were selling them to buy more games so I bought the lot. I'll be keeping Lethal Enforcers, Gekioh Shooting King and Colony Wars III.

World War II with Walter Cronkite $10.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Picked up at various sales along the trip, prices as marked. The DVD was $.50, Super Gameboy and Gameboy Advance games were $1 each.

There were alot of sales that had games, but most were overpriced or very uninteresting titles. Not the greatest weekend but was better than expected.
I want to find one of these.
That reminds me. If you ever find
Tomart's Price Guide to Character and Promotional Glasses

that you can not resell (ripped off cover, water damage or whatever) I would be interested in it. I would like to have one for reference, but I am too cheap to buy one.

Doesn't look like I'll be going to too many sales this week because of weather and lack of sales. Hopefully the weather will hold out up by you.

Actually, Thanks, that's good advice. I'm the new guy to these guys, so yeah, playing like I was dumb and made a mistake will probably get me further along under their radar....
Even though they were just teasing, it's never fun being the joke, but now I'll just let it slide and try to stay low and unnoticed so I can keep getting scores like that.

I'm with schultzed. Just a couple of tips: I don't know if you have been to other (non storage) auctions, but everyone tends to wait for the auctioneer to drop as low as he will go. Sometimes they will combine lots if there are other items from the same seller. Know what you want to pay ahead of time and stick to it. I would also recommend not spending too much time looking at one item. Bidding wars are not worth it, there will always be more stuff to buy. That's for anyone (not necessarily you).

Wow you guys are finding great stuff! i have not stumbled onto one gaming system or game for that matter and i have been going for the past month straight
However i have been finding great stuff for around the house
Bought a bin full of sprinkler parts, pvc,and brand new pop ups for 5$
xmas stuff such as decorations, cookie jars, wreaths, etc

i guess its not a total loss most of the xmas stuff is in original boxes and looked like were never used. maybe this sat will be a different story!

That's actually my second copy, I overpaid for one last year. If I start selling on CAG I'll let you know. That's if it's still around after the tornado heading this way.

Last post for last week. I have to post or I will forget:

Wanted $1 each for the discs and $15 for the PS2, paid $10 for everything.

They also has a DS (I don't know what kind, but the box was small - about 4 x 6 inches) complete in the box for $60 and 5 games for $3 each. Some vato offered $30 for everything and the girl took it. :wall:

At that point I decided I am lowballing everybody for the rest of the weekend. ;)

Another game gear $1 dollar! Now I have 5 or 6 of these things, hopefully one of them works...

Saw these items and asked if she had the controller for the GC. She said "No, but we will take less for it." I offered $5 for both items and it was happily accepted.

Gamecube (no controller) and Lego Star Wars play set (still sealed)

Another NES with 10 games and 4 controllers. Wanted $25 talked him down to $10.

It started pouring rain and I saw some people looking in the box. After they walked away to look at something else, I picked it up and made an offer.

I'm not familiar with the e-reader or the other things on the right that are GBA attachments. All 3 GBas work!

That is it for games, but these are by far my favorite purchases. After some slick negotiating I paid $32 for everything. I basically cherry picked her best books since she didn't want to give me a good deal on all of them.

Each comic pictured is basically worth $25 or more (actual resale value -though I am not selling them-).

Wolverine mini series 1-4 all in VF/NM

The Witching Hour #1 in VF/NM (probably a $100 book) and Wonder Woman books.

Nick Fury agent of Shield 1-3 by my favorite artist JIM STERANKO

Captain America 100 (which is basically Captain America number 1 for the Silver age) and a couple of Avengers. Number 11 is an early Spider-man crossover.

And that completes my 4 posts from last weekend. :whee:

Thanks for the tips. I have not been to auctions other then storage auctions. I got into it when I still lived in VT by going with a friend from work that did storage auctions on the side. I mainly went to help load the trucks and get a peek at what he bought. Now that I'm down in FL, and I have to admit seeing the TV shows reminded me of the auctions, so after finding that there are lots of auctions in my local area, I started going and watching, and only just recently started bringing money with intent to bid.

Great finds on those comics, you got some good ones! Were there any cards for the E-reader? there are a bunch of NES games that are coded on 3-5 cards per game...you have to swipe the cards through the e-reader which can store one game in memory. I think they did something with pokemon cards too, but I never got into that. Got one for the novelty factor, I have a few sets of game cards, but it was too much effort to keep swiping the cards to change games and quickly lost interest.

The more I think about it, you should also be careful (if asked) not to downplay too strongly. Maybe take a defensive "hey, I made some money on it" approach but make it sound like you're lying. So, the story is that you pulled about $15 worth of stuff from your $5 buy. This would hardly be worth the time and energy.

Those GBA action replay things used to be worth quite a sum of money on ebay, I am not sure if they still are, they might be but you will have to check prices. It was always easy to obtain them on clearance at stores then flip them on ebay. When I didn't want the old version anymore I just sold the one I had for $50-60 then bought a new one.

After a long hiatus of buyin/sellin stuff, I went out to a garage sale in my neighborhood. Found something odd, but not really amazing.

Virtual Boy controller with 8 games and manuals for $5
1001047r.jpg
Weird find, never seen any VB stuff around here before, kinda cool!

I did ask them if they had the actual headgear or game boxes and said they couldnt find them anywhere. Ah well!

Today's auction was a good one. Only 5 bidders counting myself, low key, only 1 of the guys that was at the auction tuesday was there, so my $5 garbae locker from tues. never came up.
There were 4 units available, and I ended up buying 2 of them. The first unit had a lot of cardboard boxes marked as various paper, some said tas forms, others said 'desk papers'...there was other stuff there too; a bed, a desk, a filing cabinet, some small animal carriers...but so many papers. That one went for $200, and I felt that was high for the volume of papers to be disposed of. Unit # 2 was a small 4'x8' and it had an engine in it that has in quite a few pieces, and a tool box. It looked like they used the unit to work on this engine, as that was all that was in there. Not knowing anything about engine, I stayed out of that one. It went for $350, so they either knew what the engine was, or they were hoping the tool box was full. The third one was another small 4x8, and was obviously from someone's lawn service. Being that Florida has nearly year round lawn maintenance, there are tons of lawn service guys in the area. There were 3 weed whackers, 3 hedge trimmers, 3 chainsaws, a variety of hand tools, a generator, a drill press, 2 sets of golf clubs, and a whole bunch of parts. I won the unit for $150.
may26c.jpg

The last unit was the largest, and it is horribly packed. There are a ton of bikes in there, some whole, some parts. Some of the highlights that I've found so far: a soft serve ice cream machine, a full size fridge, a washing machine, a 20 gal air compressor, a 6 foot diameter galvanized water tub for a farm, and the big ticket item is a large kiln. So far I have only dug out the front section, and I'm where I can see the kiln, but have to unbury it still. I've got my fingers crossed that it works, casue that could be big bucks.
I won this unit for $250. The guy I was bidding against dropped out at the end with a comment of 'too much work for me'
may26b.jpg

may26a.jpg

Fortuantely, this storage building is 2 blocks down from the scrap metal place. I took one truck load of scrap metal over and made $92 in scrap, and one of the other bidders offered to buy a sink that we could see from the doorway, so I sold that to him for $20. So I've all ready recouped $112. The small unit is all cleaned out, but it's going to be a long day tomorrow finishing the big one. hmm, guess who's having a *large* yard sale next weekend? lol!

Wow, pretty cool Jedi - do you do this often? Ive always been really interested in those auctions, seems like yours has already paid off a bit
Wow, pretty cool Jedii - do you do this often? Ive always been really interested in those auctions, seems like yours has already paid off a bit
I'm fairly new to doing this on my own. I used to live in Vermont, where I was introduced to storage auctions by a friend from work who did it on the side. I would go and watch and help him unload the units and move the stuff back to his place. About a year and half ago, I got laid off from my job, and I moved to FL to come take care of my Dad, as he's getting where he needs a lot of help, and he has a doctor visit every other week it seems. So Unemployment wasn't doing much for me, and I saw that there were a *lot* of storage places around, looked into auctions here and started going and watching, and it was only recently I started bringing money with the intent to bid...the first couple times I tried bidding it went over my budget, but this week I've picked up three inexpensive units. I'm hoping that by buying units and selling the stuff through a combination of ebay/craigslist/yard sales, and there's also an electronic bulletin board for the city of port charlotte where people post for sale ads, I'm hoping that I'll be able to make some money and keep my schedule open and flexible to take care of my dad as he needs, etc. So far, so good. I'll let you know how it goes.

If it's something you're interested in doing, I can give you a few tips that I've quickly picked up: first and most important: read you local newspaper. If you have a large, main stream newspaper that has all the legal announcements for your area, that's the one you want. Storage places are required to post in the legal sections that they are going to auction off deliquent units. This is like the 'public, fair warning' to the renters to let them know they need to pay up or loose their stuff. It's usually listed under a heading of 'Notice of Sale' or 'Notice of Auction' (btw, you can also find listing there for towing companies that have cars impounded that they will sell in auction, good way to pick up a car cheap, and if you know what you're doing with cars, could probably flip cars the same as flipping storage units) There are auction websites where auctioneers with advertise storage unit auctions....these are the ones that get a ot of publicity and you end up with crowds like you see on the TV shows, and then you have to pay a buyers premium when you win the auction (that pays the auctioneer's salary) and these usually have higher ending bids. A lot of times the ones that are only advertised in the paper are run by the storage manager, have smaller crowds, and you get better deals. PODS locations are great for smaller crowds, if you have a PODS place near by, give them a call and ask when they have auctions. (heck that goes for any storage location, they're usually very willing to tell you about the auctions, because to them more people means more money)
anyway, getting long winded here, so I'll leave it at that. If you're still curious and want to know more pm me and I'll try to steer ya in the right direction.
After a long hiatus of buyin/sellin stuff, I went out to a garage sale in my neighborhood. Found something odd, but not really amazing.

Virtual Boy controller with 8 games and manuals for $5

Weird find, never seen any VB stuff around here before, kinda cool!

I did ask them if they had the actual headgear or game boxes and said they couldnt find them anywhere. Ah well!
Nice one! Only $5!

I'm starting to remember why I loved doing this. The thrill you get from finding cool stuff and "artifacts" amongst people's junk is too good. Feels like real adventuring!

Also, to Jedi, thank you for the input, and I apologize for the situation you've been put in. I've been in a similar situation(family part, not the job, im in school still), and I know it's pretty hard.

My father was a stagehand, now the VP of the union he belongs to, and they get tons of miscellaneous stuff from various crews that come through the area. Most of it is transferred to a a POD like you mentioned, or set in storage to auction. The coolest thing I've seen is a storage full of old military uniforms that was left behind(how you leave something like that is beyond me) worth tons of money.

Right now I cant venture into those kinds of auctions since I'm in school and just a lowly grocery store worker, but it's always interested me.

The storage thing sounds fun and exciting, but I know I'm just too lazy to make it work. Most stuff would probably end up sitting in my own storage unit.

I've been considering hitting auctions myself for awhile now. You got me a little more pumped for this Jedi. I started calling around today so hoping for some good stuff.

Go for it! It's fun, it's an adventure....it's a lot of work...but it's worth it. And one of these days I'm going to find a storage locker with video games or a pinball machine! (I hope...)

And to Potatoeman:

Even without a lot of cash, you can still score a storage locker. The first one I won this week only cost me $5! No one else wanted to bid because it looked like a pile of trash from the front....and there was a lot of trash in the front, and it was an all day (working by myself here) chore to haul away the trash, but the back! ah, the back of the unit is where the good stuff was, the stuff they cared about and wrapped carefully and put into totes. They had an antique end table, and old toys from the late 60's and early 70's. That $5 and day of hauling stuff away is going to have a good return when it is all sold.

Oh, well that is pretty cool! I had assumed there would be a heavy minimum charge or something to bid. Old fisher price toys are goldmines a lot of the time! Maybe I will look into it then.
Also, DeadStronger, do you live in SA? Seems a lot of CAGs live in texas. Competiton is EVERYWHERE here.

Ah the dream. That's really why I wanted to start doing it; the adventure. Been loving the yard sales so figured what the hell. Just wondering, since you more knowledgeable in the auction game, if I can pick your brain a little more on the subject?

Luckily for you, I'm in little ol' El Paso where all my yardsale competition comes from Juarez in old vans and buy everything as I pull up.

Fire away, I'll do my best to steer you in the right direction

figure this is the best place to ask since I have had no luck lately. I picked up an SNES w/ no power cord and a ps2 w/ no wires to the tv anyone have either of these relativly inexpensive?

And do you guys go out on Thursdays? I'm not even sure there are any yard sales here that start on Thursday.

Not to offend anybody, but I know exactly what you mean.

The City I live in is nearly 65% hispanic, and boy do we show it. Every yard sale I hit is either run by, or is crowded with hispanic people. Good and bad, considering they have a lot of cool crap lying around!

To chime in on your question - some of the best deals I've hit going to yard sales has been on Thursdays oddly enough. They're rare here but they do happen.

For anyone curious about the Virtual Boy games I got earlier, it seems 3D tetris is one of the rarer games, so score on that!

Going to my first yard sale all year! It's a tad windy and a little wet so I'm hoping it doesn't kill the activity. It's also 9 AM. I would have liked to have gone a little earlier, but hey, I'll make due.

Wish me luck! I'll report back with my findings.
