condition stuff seemingly pulled back by amazon, spoilered until I can reorg
Notice 4/14/11: New shenanigans abound! There is now a condition field for all trades - all trades are set to "Good" and may be determined to be worse than that ("Acceptable") or better ("Like New"). During the trade-in confirmation process you may choose whether to have an item in worse condition returned to you or just processed at the lower value. It does appear that this might mean that NORAM will start taking games/consoles without original packaging / manuals / etc which might be beneficial to some.

We'll see how this works out! To be added to the core FAQ after its newness wears off.

GENERAL FAQ (Updated 12/10/09)

Can I post question on this thread?
Only if you can't find the answer from below. And please let me know if it needs to be added to FAQ.

My cover art (PLATINUM HITS) differs from the pic on amazon, will my trade be accepted?
It all depends on the UPC so just turn your game around, type in the upc into the amazon search box. If the game comes up, then it's accepted regardless of cover art. Click on that result to submit your trade.

Since when did Amazon start doing trades?
The program began in 2009 and is handled by a third party merchant, NorAm International.

What kind of shipping does Amazon provide us?
Free UPS ground ---- USPS is no longer available for free. There is now also an option to provide your own shipping.

Do I have to provide my own box or envelope?
Yes.

Do all my games in the same trade-in submission have to be shipped in the same box? (updated 3/9/11)
Not necessarily - people have sent in multiple boxes for the same trade-in submission successfully. It's even possible to send half at one time and the other half at the end of the valid shipping period. However, it's probably best to always ship everything at once.

Can I send in sealed games?
Yes. They won't reject games that still have the original shrink wrap.

Can I add Delivery Confirmation and Insurance to my shipment?
For UPS Ground
It already provides you with tracking information.

I don't trust UPS ground. Can I pay for postage myself? What's the address?
Yes. You're more than welcome to do so. The address is:
NorAm International
22 Hampshire Dr
Hudson, NH 03051

(This is also an option when submitting your trades)

When do I have to send my games once I have submitted my trade order?
You have 1 week (7 days) to send your games. There have been reports of submitting trades up to 15 - 20 days late, but that is definitely ymmv. Send on time for the best chance at success!

Crap, I have one day to go before my shipment deadline, but the website states that my deadline has already passed. How do I print out a shipping label and packing slip?
Load up any existing order (if you don't have any, check your browser's history), and substitute the transaction ID for the trade-in order you need at the end of the URL.

How long does the whole trade-in process usually take?
From the time you send in your games, it may take up to 14 business days for the package to arrive. Most people usually receive their credit (Amazon GiftCard) in 3 to 5 business days, however.

How long does the "processing" status usually take?
Usually with no delay, but the longest reported days so far is 4.

My games were received on Friday (based on Delivery Confirmation), will I have to wait until Monday to receive credit?
People have received credit on a Saturday.

I do not have the manual, cover art, or original case for a game I want to trade in. Will they accept it?
While the details specifically state that original packaging is necessary, people have reported in the past that their trades were accepted despite missing some of these. This is extremely YMMV, however since some were also rejected by missing manual or cover art. On the other hand, older gen games; such as SNES, N64, and GB cartridges, normally get accepted without the original box and manual, but still YMMV.
It's always better if you trade your non-complete game as an additional credit, not part of the minimum requirement to qualify for the promo.

I do not have the manual, accessories, original box, original included game, etc for a console or accessory I want to trade in. Will they accept it? (updated 3/9/11)
The current wisdom is "probably not" - it's pretty YMMV but NorAm seems stricter than they should be on this. Your chances seem to be better for them accepting a console or accessory without the box / manual / etc if it's older generation or rare. You're more than welcome to give it a shot though if you're feeling lucky - just pack it well and include as much as you can!

My game is really beat up, what are the chances they’ll accept it?
This is YMMV. Some people have reported in the past that they sent in games in bad shape that were still accepted. Your best bet is still to trade in games in mint condition. Minor scratches are expected as these are used games.

My game is the Greatest Hits version, but the one pictured on the site isn’t. Can I still trade it in?
Unless the game in question has two separate versions that trade at different values, sending in a greatest hits version is okay.

I have a game from a limited edition bundle, will they accept it?
If the game’s cover art has a UPC barcode, they will most likely accept it. If your game's cover states "Not for Resale" and does not have a UPC barcode, the game will most likely get rejected. Some people have had their games accepted in the past, but this is YMMV.

The UPC barcode is not intact on my game's cover art, will that be accepted? (updated 3/9/11)
This is YMMV, but probably not. The UPC is all powerful within the walls of NorAm.

I sent in my games, all of which were in pristine condition with the original packaging, but they said that one game is damaged and is now being returned.
Always pack your games well. Put a lot of newspaper around your games in the box to secure them and to prevent any damages from haphazard box cutting. People in the past have requested their entire trade-in order if it’s obvious the damage wasn’t their fault, and Amazon ended up accepting the rejected game. This is YMMV as well.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
Yes. Once you click “Trade in” for a particular game, you may change the quantities. Once you submit, you can no longer change quantities on that trade-in batch.

How many multiple copies of the same game can I trade-in (updated 1/11/11)?
Maximum of 2 copies within 3 months period

I locked in X copies of a game but I now only have Y available to send. Can I just send in Y without being penalized? (updated 3/9/11)
Yes, you can always just send in a portion of your trade-in order and they'll just credit you for whatever they receive. However, the quantities you submitted for will stay locked in that instance (I think) so if you, for example, submitted for 2 copies and only sent 1, you may not be able to trade any more copies of that game for 3 months (see previous question).

Will the Trade-in of the Day TIV stay for 24 hours?
It's been reported that there is a limit (maximum # of copies) that will get the promoted TIV so lock yours.

So if I find a good flip, I can just send 2 copies of that game and not worry about Amazon accusing me of stolen merchandise?
Technically yes, but do keep in mind that other CAGs might want to participate in the current deal, and trading in a large number of the same game will definitely lower the TIV of said game. Let’s be nice to other people.

Wow, these TIVs suck (updated 3/9/11)!
Really? Hrm. While that may be true, they're often better than other comparable places. Your options of what to do with your used games are greater now than they've ever been, so feel free to shop your trades around or just sell them off on glyde/gamestaq/ebay/whatever.

What the fuck? The TIV of a game I just bought for this deal tanked! What do I do?
The TIVs on Amazon fluctuate depending on the number of trades that are submitted, and we really can’t do anything about it. The best course of action for trading in games is to lock in your trade if you already have the games or are absolutely sure that you can obtain them. You can always cancel the trade submission if you end up not finding the games.

LOCK = SUBMIT YOUR TRADE, Don't just put it in the cart.

Can I edit a submitted trade?
Nope - once upon a time you could modify trade in quantities of submitted trades, but that ability has been removed.

Can I use my credit (not the trade-in deal coupon) on items that are not video game-related?
Yes. This is the other perk for trading in games at Amazon since you're not limited to just video games.

Can I use my credit on items sold by third-party merchants on Amazon?
According to the fine print of the Amazon gift card use, some merchants are excluded. Your best bet is to try it on the checkout page of your order.

Strategy guides? I can trade in game/strategy guides? Whaaaaa?
Go to the Textbook Buyback section (http://www.amazon.com/Textbooks-Trad...ode=2205237011). You can either search on the title of a strategy guide you have to see if they'll accept it, or search for guides. The two best search strings to start with are 'prima guides' and 'bradygames'. Might try 'doublejump' if you want to trade in some of those. (Thanks eugaet)

I locked in some hilariously overvalued trade for some weird rare game/accessory/etc that I can pick up for cheap cheap cheap. They didn't accept it. What should I do? (updated 3/9/11)
The truth is that NORAM can reject things for any reason they see fit. While some people have managed to get silly things like a $200 credit for some cheerleading game, it's sooooooo YMMV that often it's not worth the effort. EXPECT REJECTION ON THINGS THAT ARE CLEARLY MISVALUED. That said, as long as you're willing to risk it, go for it!

trade-in promo related faq spoilered for history. promos no longer offered by amazon
---- TRADE-IN PROMO RELATED FAQ ---

When do I receive my coupon code for the current trade-in deal, if any?
The Terms of Service states 10 days after Amazon has accepted your games and added credit to your account, but it usually takes 2 to 3 days.

Can I do two different trade-in submissions that add up to the requirements of the current trade-in deal, if any?
No. In order to qualify for any of the trade-in promos, they have to all be in one trade-in submission. You can't add another game later on to make the minimum. However, you can adjust the quantity of the submitted game to make the minimum.

I submitted my trade-in order online, how do I know if I qualified for the current trade-in deal, if any? Is there a confirmation page or e-mail?
No. They will automatically send you a coupon code once they have accepted your shipment of games and credited your account.

Is the trade-in deal coupon in addition to the credit I will receive for my games?
Yes.

Can I trade in DVDs to take advantage of the current trade-in deal?
You may trade in DVDs to add credit to your Amazon account, but they will not be added to the amount you need to qualify for the deal.

Can I take advantage of the current trade-in (if available) promo more than once?
These deals are “One per household” unless stated otherwise. However, you may use a different Amazon account. The credit for your games will be tied to the specific account used for the trade, but the coupon codes for the deals are not.
*However, some people has confirmed that they get multiple coupon by using 1 Amazon account after doing multiple submission.
NOTE: IF YOU SEND MORE THAN 1 SUBMISSION, THE MULTIPLE COUPONS MIGHT COME IN 1 EMAIL, THE CODE IS SEPARATED BY A COMMA.

If the coupon codes aren’t tied to my account, can I use more than one coupon on my next purchase?
No. Unless stated otherwise in the promo details, these coupons cannot be combined with other offers or promotions.

So if they reject one of my games, am I disqualified from the current trade-in deal, if any?
Unfortunately yes. The best suggestion for trading in games is to trade in $10-$20 more than the minimum for the deal. By doing so, you will still qualify for the promo even if one or two games get rejected.

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon on preorders?
Yes.

What happen to the Coupon code if I cancel the preorder?
The coupon code will stay with your account. It will be applied automatically at check-out as long as the coupon is not expired.

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon when shopping from other merchants on Amazon?
No. ONLY ITEMS SOLD BY AMAZON.COM QUALIFY FOR PURCHASE WITH THE TRADE-IN COUPON. Even Amazon's other sites (Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.jp, etc.) do not participate in these trade-in deals.

Trade-in coupon Usage:
Previous promo coupons and their expiration dates (NO ACTIVE PROMOS CURRENTLY):

1st Promo - $ 50 / $75 Coupon (coupon exp: 8/31) - Game Console Only
2nd Promo - 50 % Coupon (coupon exp: 8/31) - Game and Accessories
3rd Promo - $ 30 Coupon (coupon exp: 12/31) - Game Console, Game and Accessories
4th Promo - $ 30 Coupon (coupon exp: 12/31) - Game Console Only

I had a fairly bad game that I sent about a year ago ( :wii: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed) and it was accepted. I remember being pretty wary of it, as the scratches were pretty visible, even without light on it. Oddly, it was (and still is) my only scratched game from GameFly that I've ever received.
For whatever it is you could also try Gazelle as they tend not to update their prices for a day or two after Amazon does. Plus you get 5% extra if you choose Amazon credit.
Didn't know Gazelle gave you 5% more. Could have gotten $6 more, oh well. TIVs are pretty close to amazon. Hopefully my games go thru since some are missing manuals and cover art isn't in the best shape (color distortion from the sun)

HUZZAH! 3 360 beatles rockband, and you, are a life saver. Well, you're a saver of like 24.25. I imagine it's just easiest to use my own box and not bother waiting on a free one from them. I have a million from amazon(99% of my online purchases now) anyway.

Not in a hurry but how fast is the credit from gazelle usually?

Actually, if I'm getting the same TiV(plus 5%) or higher on gazelle, is there any reason to use amazon at all?

amazon is much faster and has better CS but gazelle pretty much wins everywhere else. On top of the 5% boost, you also have 30 days to ship, you can uncheck missing items if your game is incomplete, and you could just get paypal money instead of credit. I've always gone for paypal personally.

I have had one problem with gazelle but a couple with amazon. I had to really fight for what i was owed from gazelle. Most would have quit.

Well, trying gazelle this time around. If anything, it'll be easier than shipping out the 3 different ones I have currently with amazon anyway. Paypal would be nice if I needed this for something like bills, definitely, but I spend enough at amazon that the bonus is helpful and it'll be put to use soon after I get it.

Maybe I'll give it a shot. Thank you. I can't believe how many cases I've needed to swap out with my nice perfect cases. It seems 90% of the time I buy a used game to flip to AMZ I end up with a case that has a crack in it, the plastic scratched up bad or small cut, etc. And it's usually not fixable on the store end. Last time I swapped the case out and still ended up with one messed up barely visible and this time it was their only copy. The games in my collection are becoming bruised and battered

It does not expire.

Somewhat of a roundabout explanation I know, but since the Trade-In program offers you an Amazon Gift Card, I found this on their Gift card page (pretty much at the very bottom):

" The expiration date for Gift Cards issued after October 1, 2005 are waived and may be redeemed for eligible purchases notwithstanding any stated expiration date. Any Gift Cards issued prior to that date expire in accordance with their terms. Expiration dates also do not apply for Gift Cards issued in CA, CT, LA, ME, MD, MA, MT, NH, ND, OK, RI, VT, WA. Expiration dates do not apply in any other state solely to the extent as prohibited or limited by law."
Have you guys ever sent in a scratched up game and had it accepted, how bad was it, and do you remember what game it was?

np.
I've never sent anything that looked horrible but I do know that one time I was looking up info on the web about NorAm to contact them over a missing game and I noticed they ran a disc refurb service. That seems to fit with what others have reported (that scratches are not rejected). I think they are less picky about that because they can just refurb them. However, they are extremely picky over manuals and tiny tiny cracks in the center of the disc. I had a game rejected for a 2mm crack in the very center plastic that I didn't even see when sending it in (it may not have been there at the time - they might have done it removing the game from the case).

Well, funny you should ask about the time. I kind of regret making more Amazon submissions than Gazelle ones recently as I am getting faster results from Gazelle.

I sent two packages in last Wednesday: 1 to Amazon via UPS and 1 to Gazelle via USPS parcel post. The UPS package is still in transit while the USPS one got there today and has already been processed and accepted by Gazelle. They said the Amazon gift card will come in the next few days.

That is a much faster turnaround than I had from them in the past when it took 3-4 weeks to get the credit. Given the cash option (PayPal) or 5% more in Amazon credit, I think I may cancel a few Amazon submissions I have and go entirely with Gazelle. Not only is there the cash/5% more Amazon credit, the 30 days to submit, and the faster shipping, they tend to hold on to the higher prices for a few days before matching Amazon so they are a good outlet if you missed an Amazon trade-in value (like Beatles RB). Oh, there's also the ability to cancel individual items from an order and not lose the values of the other ones (I haven't done this but it seems the option is there).

FWIW, I'm shipping from the West Coast so the two places are pretty equivalent distance-wise (NH for Amazon, MD for Gazelle). If you are closer, of course, the shipping will be much faster.

I've been using Gazelle for probably 3/4 of my trades now. I used to hate them and used mostly amazon, but now they always match amazon's tiv, sometimes a buck more, and give it to you in cash. I used to build up GS and amazon credit more but cash has been so much more versetile (obviously), especially with HWV closings and recently BBV. I get Walmart visa cards which work like any preloaded visa card. They can be used anywhere and when I spend them for games I don't feel guilty cause it's like using trade in credit. Those cards did pay for half of my new LED LCD tv for my gaming/ps3 blue ray movies.

Well, of all the places to get credit, Amazon is the closest to cash anyway. But still, I always go back and forth between pushing the Paypal option or Amazon option on my Gazelle trades. I have a lot of Amazon credit from the promos last Fall and I'd just be adding to it.

On the other hand, I can just pop on there and easily buy all kinds of stuff and save myself the hassle of a trip to, say, Babies R Us. I just bought a replacement car seat for my 2 year-old. Not only was the price lower on Amazon than at TRU/Target/etc for the same seat, I got it shipped for free in 2 days (Amazon Prime) and got to use game-derived trade-in credit. In the past I liked to keep my game purchases separate from everything else so I liked having BBV or GS credit, but now if I can get other things cheaper by trading in games, why not use it on everything I can?

True - I also try to keep a few hundred amazon credit available, cause 5% bonus from Gazelle, + no tax (=8.25% more here in CA) is a very good deal. I have a Gibson SG in my "save for later" cart, currently 699. I swear I remember them being 499 or 599 last year at one point, buty had no credit.

Today's trade-in deal is Oblivion: GOTY Edition for 360 - $15.

I traded mine when it was normally going for $14.50. Good deal for those CAGs who are finished with Oblivion and are trying to sell it for $20 or so, like I was; no hassles with shipping or anything, so that makes up for the lost $5.

How picky is NorAm about the cover art? I plan to send in some used games, but the the bottom edge of the cover art on the front for one game is damaged. Would they reject the trade-in because of this damage? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Traded in 3 Beatles Rock Bands today and had to pay $3.18 to ups cause I had to pay for the box and the packaging service :(

I'll let you know soon, but my item's cover art merely had some scuff marks (white marks on black) - one which looks like a cut but really isn't. What kind of damage is it?

I also had 2 games rejected for cracks in that part that were the size of pen tips. I was going to send another game this week but I discovered an even tinier barely visible crack on it and decided not to risk it.

Traded in several games and got them to ups last friday. Package was recieved by the "third party" yesterday, and i was given the credit today.

Will use again.

I have a copy of the Beatles Rock Band game. The cover art has a sliver of exposed white on the front near the bottom edge. Most of the cover is dark gray. It looks as if someone may have accidentally ripped off some of the cover art by briefly applying a sticker there and then removing it.

If you have new sealed games to trade in, should you unwrap them or send them in sealed?

All I can say from my experience is that if there are scuff marks then go for it, but if there are rips I would not risk it. If it is barely visible rip or very small (pen tip size or less) then I might risk it. I say risk it because they say on the site (and I think emails now too) that they don't return stuff that is damaged. Although for stuff returned they also mention damaged as a reason. So who knows if they'd return it.

Thanks for the input. I decided to take a gamble and send it in to NorAm. Let's see what happens.

I've been lucky enough to find brand new games for cheap to trade into Amazon/NorAm. I usually unwrap them before sending them out.

I fail. I read the OP before and didn't see where he mentioned sealed games somehow. Just read it again and it says you can send sealed games and they will accept them. Also managed to find posts in the thread where people said they sent in sealed games and accepted!

do you guys know what the maximum number of different active packages you can have/send at any one time, or if there is a limit at all? i couldn't find an answer in the pg 1 faq or on amazon's trade in site. thanks.

As far as I know, there is no limit. I have several "active" trade-in submissions right now (won't be sending them all in - some were backups for stuff I may keep, others were duplicates that I'm sending to Gazelle instead, etc) and I've had many more in the past (back when they had the $30 trade-in promo coupon). Of course back then there was no limit on game quantities either which was nice - and you could edit your order after the fact to adjust quantity if you found more copies and the price would remain even if it dropped for new submissions. They've clamped down quite a bit with the 3 per game limit and the readjustment of trade-in values if you edit, but it is still, overall, a very fair system and I don't think they have any overall limits to the number of orders or total number of games (as long as it isn't more than 3 of each).

As seems to be tradition on Sunday nights, there's several price changes at Amazon (thanks to the almighty tracker) that provide excellent gamestop -> Amazon credit moves.

One option is Cloudy With a Chance :wii: x 3 and Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood :ps3: x 3. Using Gamestop.com's current coupons (25OFF and 10AUTO) stacking + EDGE it comes out to about $75 after tax and shipping for me and trades at Amazon at about $106. There's surely more options but that's the first I noticed. Enjoy!
If you have new sealed games to trade in, should you unwrap them or send them in sealed?
I sent in two orders at the same time a week ago - 18 games total, all sealed and they were accepted. Sent in a 3rd tradein with 15 more sealed games and waiting on the credit there.

Thank you for this recent added confirmation.

Can I send Amazon the Borderlands with this cover?

it has a gamestop exclusive weapons pack circle on it and slip with code on it inside. I'd like to keep the code if I can.

They don't care about the code but if the UPC on the back doesn't match their UPC (regular edition), they'll reject it. Because they are dumb monkeys.

I put the UPC into the site and it brought up the regular Borderlands. Does that mean they take it?
Lame I was planning to trade in star ocean international but tiv dropped to $17 from $36.
Yea Metro 2033 dropped from 30 to 18, alot of things dropped. Ill have to lock things in faster I guess

Well, I was defending Amazon's trade-in processing time vs Gazelle in the other thread but they let me down a bit today. In nearly every case in the past they have received/processed/credited me within hours on the same day. I got this treatment last week on two packages. But they received one early AM Monday and still no credit. I know back in the heydey of last Summer and Fall (with the trade-in promos) they would occasionally take 1 full day, so I'm by no means worried. But given Gazelle's improved processing times (down to a couple days from 2-3 weeks in the past) with their new processor (the same one that does the Best Buy program), that's just one less reason to use Amazon over Gazelle.

I had 2 separate trade-in orders last week and I got credit for both the day AFTER they were received. Don't worry, I'm sure your credit will show up tomorrow.

Oh yeah, like I said I'm not worried. I'm sure it will be there early in the AM. I think even occasionally they would take 2 days last fall, though that was pretty rare. It was usually same-day, occasionally next day, and rarely a day or two after that. The only exception was once when I didn't send everything in, then it took 4-5 days but I guess they were waiting for more to arrive or taking longer to verify I didn't send everything (even though I included a note saying I left a few out on purpose).

I've never traded through gazelle and I was reading your other posts on the Gazelle forum. I noticed you said that you mailed your games to gazelle with USPS. Does Gazelle offer the option to use UPS? I'd just rather use UPS because I'm dropping off the beatles rockband games to amazon/noram at the UPS store.

No option - they print you a USPS arcel Post label. They also offer to send you a box, but don't bother as it will be a Priority Mail box and it is strictly forbidden to use a priority mail box for anything other than Priority Mail - it could get sent back to you or delivered with postage due. I don't know why they continue to send those out.

I like the USPS option a little better because the PO is closer than the UPS store but mostly because it is actually faster than UPS for me, anyway. But they are both OK.

By the way, some big drops at Amazon today. Rock Band 2 PS3 is down to $6.50 from $20. Scooby-Doo First Frights Wii is down to $5 from $10. Those were two fairly common BBV B1G1 sale games.

It was a BLOOD BATH last night for TIV's at Amazon!!! :bomb:

Ratchet and Clank down 15.50 (not down TO 15.50...down from $28 to $12.50)
Supreme Commander 2 down 15.50
Guitar Hero Smash Hits down 10.50
Call of Juarez down 9.00

And that's just a sample! There were literally HUNDREDS of drops > $3.00 and probably 50 or so > $6.00!

Looks like they're on to us...
Many of our trades are going to Dealtree right now. Perhaps this is a sign of a new trade-in promo coming
Seriously. Amazon is such a promo tease, all making us think they'd have them regularly.

I read the faq... and it seems I can do this.. but can someone just verify that I can lock in a price and then cancel it if I decide to trade somewhere else? without penalty or any headaches getting it canceled?

what happens if you lock in and trade and do nothing...?

Nothing. But you might as well cancel it, especially if the shipping deadline has passed anyway. That way, if you should have the opportunity of trading the same game(s) in over the next few months, the locked-in (and non-cancelled) submission won't count against your 3-game limit.

What I tend to do is if the values haven't dropped (or maybe have even gone up which did happen with at least one game amongst all these drops: The Bigs 2 for PS3), is cancel a trade and then resubmit all the same games. If nothing else, that extends my mailing deadline. As soon as you cancel it frees up the quantity you had originally submitted so it doesn't count against you any more.

FWIW, my submission received yesterday was credited today as expected. No problems so far on this batch of trade-ins. They've accepted 3 boxes of 7-10 games from me the last 2 weeks with no rejections. That isn't really a shock, though, as for the most part I sent in pretty good stuff.

thanks so much guys for the info... I don't trade in very often.. and especially mail in trade ins... occasionally I hop on a gamestop promo in store

trying to figure out where to trade in.. between gamestop, bestbuy and amazon for Destroy All Humans POF

IO i think you're lookin to do the same from the other threads... bestbuy is obv the best deal in paper but some of their T&C's and reviews make me hesitant
