condition stuff seemingly pulled back by amazon, spoilered until I can reorg
Notice 4/14/11: New shenanigans abound! There is now a condition field for all trades - all trades are set to "Good" and may be determined to be worse than that ("Acceptable") or better ("Like New"). During the trade-in confirmation process you may choose whether to have an item in worse condition returned to you or just processed at the lower value. It does appear that this might mean that NORAM will start taking games/consoles without original packaging / manuals / etc which might be beneficial to some.

We'll see how this works out! To be added to the core FAQ after its newness wears off.

GENERAL FAQ (Updated 12/10/09)

Can I post question on this thread?
Only if you can't find the answer from below. And please let me know if it needs to be added to FAQ.

My cover art (PLATINUM HITS) differs from the pic on amazon, will my trade be accepted?
It all depends on the UPC so just turn your game around, type in the upc into the amazon search box. If the game comes up, then it's accepted regardless of cover art. Click on that result to submit your trade.

Since when did Amazon start doing trades?
The program began in 2009 and is handled by a third party merchant, NorAm International.

What kind of shipping does Amazon provide us?
Free UPS ground ---- USPS is no longer available for free. There is now also an option to provide your own shipping.

Do I have to provide my own box or envelope?
Yes.

Do all my games in the same trade-in submission have to be shipped in the same box? (updated 3/9/11)
Not necessarily - people have sent in multiple boxes for the same trade-in submission successfully. It's even possible to send half at one time and the other half at the end of the valid shipping period. However, it's probably best to always ship everything at once.

Can I send in sealed games?
Yes. They won't reject games that still have the original shrink wrap.

Can I add Delivery Confirmation and Insurance to my shipment?
For UPS Ground
It already provides you with tracking information.

I don't trust UPS ground. Can I pay for postage myself? What's the address?
Yes. You're more than welcome to do so. The address is:
NorAm International
22 Hampshire Dr
Hudson, NH 03051

(This is also an option when submitting your trades)

When do I have to send my games once I have submitted my trade order?
You have 1 week (7 days) to send your games. There have been reports of submitting trades up to 15 - 20 days late, but that is definitely ymmv. Send on time for the best chance at success!

Crap, I have one day to go before my shipment deadline, but the website states that my deadline has already passed. How do I print out a shipping label and packing slip?
Load up any existing order (if you don't have any, check your browser's history), and substitute the transaction ID for the trade-in order you need at the end of the URL.

How long does the whole trade-in process usually take?
From the time you send in your games, it may take up to 14 business days for the package to arrive. Most people usually receive their credit (Amazon GiftCard) in 3 to 5 business days, however.

How long does the "processing" status usually take?
Usually with no delay, but the longest reported days so far is 4.

My games were received on Friday (based on Delivery Confirmation), will I have to wait until Monday to receive credit?
People have received credit on a Saturday.

I do not have the manual, cover art, or original case for a game I want to trade in. Will they accept it?
While the details specifically state that original packaging is necessary, people have reported in the past that their trades were accepted despite missing some of these. This is extremely YMMV, however since some were also rejected by missing manual or cover art. On the other hand, older gen games; such as SNES, N64, and GB cartridges, normally get accepted without the original box and manual, but still YMMV.
It's always better if you trade your non-complete game as an additional credit, not part of the minimum requirement to qualify for the promo.

I do not have the manual, accessories, original box, original included game, etc for a console or accessory I want to trade in. Will they accept it? (updated 3/9/11)
The current wisdom is "probably not" - it's pretty YMMV but NorAm seems stricter than they should be on this. Your chances seem to be better for them accepting a console or accessory without the box / manual / etc if it's older generation or rare. You're more than welcome to give it a shot though if you're feeling lucky - just pack it well and include as much as you can!

My game is really beat up, what are the chances they’ll accept it?
This is YMMV. Some people have reported in the past that they sent in games in bad shape that were still accepted. Your best bet is still to trade in games in mint condition. Minor scratches are expected as these are used games.

My game is the Greatest Hits version, but the one pictured on the site isn’t. Can I still trade it in?
Unless the game in question has two separate versions that trade at different values, sending in a greatest hits version is okay.

I have a game from a limited edition bundle, will they accept it?
If the game’s cover art has a UPC barcode, they will most likely accept it. If your game's cover states "Not for Resale" and does not have a UPC barcode, the game will most likely get rejected. Some people have had their games accepted in the past, but this is YMMV.

The UPC barcode is not intact on my game's cover art, will that be accepted? (updated 3/9/11)
This is YMMV, but probably not. The UPC is all powerful within the walls of NorAm.

I sent in my games, all of which were in pristine condition with the original packaging, but they said that one game is damaged and is now being returned.
Always pack your games well. Put a lot of newspaper around your games in the box to secure them and to prevent any damages from haphazard box cutting. People in the past have requested their entire trade-in order if it’s obvious the damage wasn’t their fault, and Amazon ended up accepting the rejected game. This is YMMV as well.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
Yes. Once you click “Trade in” for a particular game, you may change the quantities. Once you submit, you can no longer change quantities on that trade-in batch.

How many multiple copies of the same game can I trade-in (updated 1/11/11)?
Maximum of 2 copies within 3 months period

I locked in X copies of a game but I now only have Y available to send. Can I just send in Y without being penalized? (updated 3/9/11)
Yes, you can always just send in a portion of your trade-in order and they'll just credit you for whatever they receive. However, the quantities you submitted for will stay locked in that instance (I think) so if you, for example, submitted for 2 copies and only sent 1, you may not be able to trade any more copies of that game for 3 months (see previous question).

Will the Trade-in of the Day TIV stay for 24 hours?
It's been reported that there is a limit (maximum # of copies) that will get the promoted TIV so lock yours.

So if I find a good flip, I can just send 2 copies of that game and not worry about Amazon accusing me of stolen merchandise?
Technically yes, but do keep in mind that other CAGs might want to participate in the current deal, and trading in a large number of the same game will definitely lower the TIV of said game. Let’s be nice to other people.

Wow, these TIVs suck (updated 3/9/11)!
Really? Hrm. While that may be true, they're often better than other comparable places. Your options of what to do with your used games are greater now than they've ever been, so feel free to shop your trades around or just sell them off on glyde/gamestaq/ebay/whatever.

What the fuck? The TIV of a game I just bought for this deal tanked! What do I do?
The TIVs on Amazon fluctuate depending on the number of trades that are submitted, and we really can’t do anything about it. The best course of action for trading in games is to lock in your trade if you already have the games or are absolutely sure that you can obtain them. You can always cancel the trade submission if you end up not finding the games.

LOCK = SUBMIT YOUR TRADE, Don't just put it in the cart.

Can I edit a submitted trade?
Nope - once upon a time you could modify trade in quantities of submitted trades, but that ability has been removed.

Can I use my credit (not the trade-in deal coupon) on items that are not video game-related?
Yes. This is the other perk for trading in games at Amazon since you're not limited to just video games.

Can I use my credit on items sold by third-party merchants on Amazon?
According to the fine print of the Amazon gift card use, some merchants are excluded. Your best bet is to try it on the checkout page of your order.

Strategy guides? I can trade in game/strategy guides? Whaaaaa?
Go to the Textbook Buyback section (http://www.amazon.com/Textbooks-Trad...ode=2205237011). You can either search on the title of a strategy guide you have to see if they'll accept it, or search for guides. The two best search strings to start with are 'prima guides' and 'bradygames'. Might try 'doublejump' if you want to trade in some of those. (Thanks eugaet)

I locked in some hilariously overvalued trade for some weird rare game/accessory/etc that I can pick up for cheap cheap cheap. They didn't accept it. What should I do? (updated 3/9/11)
The truth is that NORAM can reject things for any reason they see fit. While some people have managed to get silly things like a $200 credit for some cheerleading game, it's sooooooo YMMV that often it's not worth the effort. EXPECT REJECTION ON THINGS THAT ARE CLEARLY MISVALUED. That said, as long as you're willing to risk it, go for it!

trade-in promo related faq spoilered for history. promos no longer offered by amazon
---- TRADE-IN PROMO RELATED FAQ ---

When do I receive my coupon code for the current trade-in deal, if any?
The Terms of Service states 10 days after Amazon has accepted your games and added credit to your account, but it usually takes 2 to 3 days.

Can I do two different trade-in submissions that add up to the requirements of the current trade-in deal, if any?
No. In order to qualify for any of the trade-in promos, they have to all be in one trade-in submission. You can't add another game later on to make the minimum. However, you can adjust the quantity of the submitted game to make the minimum.

I submitted my trade-in order online, how do I know if I qualified for the current trade-in deal, if any? Is there a confirmation page or e-mail?
No. They will automatically send you a coupon code once they have accepted your shipment of games and credited your account.

Is the trade-in deal coupon in addition to the credit I will receive for my games?
Yes.

Can I trade in DVDs to take advantage of the current trade-in deal?
You may trade in DVDs to add credit to your Amazon account, but they will not be added to the amount you need to qualify for the deal.

Can I take advantage of the current trade-in (if available) promo more than once?
These deals are “One per household” unless stated otherwise. However, you may use a different Amazon account. The credit for your games will be tied to the specific account used for the trade, but the coupon codes for the deals are not.
*However, some people has confirmed that they get multiple coupon by using 1 Amazon account after doing multiple submission.
NOTE: IF YOU SEND MORE THAN 1 SUBMISSION, THE MULTIPLE COUPONS MIGHT COME IN 1 EMAIL, THE CODE IS SEPARATED BY A COMMA.

If the coupon codes aren’t tied to my account, can I use more than one coupon on my next purchase?
No. Unless stated otherwise in the promo details, these coupons cannot be combined with other offers or promotions.

So if they reject one of my games, am I disqualified from the current trade-in deal, if any?
Unfortunately yes. The best suggestion for trading in games is to trade in $10-$20 more than the minimum for the deal. By doing so, you will still qualify for the promo even if one or two games get rejected.

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon on preorders?
Yes.

What happen to the Coupon code if I cancel the preorder?
The coupon code will stay with your account. It will be applied automatically at check-out as long as the coupon is not expired.

Can I use the trade-in deal coupon when shopping from other merchants on Amazon?
No. ONLY ITEMS SOLD BY AMAZON.COM QUALIFY FOR PURCHASE WITH THE TRADE-IN COUPON. Even Amazon's other sites (Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.jp, etc.) do not participate in these trade-in deals.

Trade-in coupon Usage:
Previous promo coupons and their expiration dates (NO ACTIVE PROMOS CURRENTLY):

1st Promo - $ 50 / $75 Coupon (coupon exp: 8/31) - Game Console Only
2nd Promo - 50 % Coupon (coupon exp: 8/31) - Game and Accessories
3rd Promo - $ 30 Coupon (coupon exp: 12/31) - Game Console, Game and Accessories
4th Promo - $ 30 Coupon (coupon exp: 12/31) - Game Console Only

Something interesting happened to me today. I traded in a "Not for resale" Tony Hawk Shred copy for the Xbox 360. They accepted it. The reason, I think, they accepted it was because on the outside of the xbox case plastic there was a stickered upc barcode.
I think this is a breakthrough.

What would be my best options if my Xbox 360 Elite that got rejected because supposedly it was damaged comes back to me damaged?

Has anyone here ever sold older cartridge based games (NES, SNES, Genesis, etc) to Amazon before? Do you know if they absolutely require the original box and booklet, or can you get away with just sending in the game cartridge itself?

Keep after Amazon if it does come back truly damaged. But if it comes back in the same shape you sent it in, then still bitch to them and see if they'll give you a promo credit for wasted time at least.

Never hurts to try.

Does anyone know of an app or website that compares Amazon's trade in prices to other retailer's used prices? Or perhaps this is being done somewhere on this site. If so, where? Thanks!

Do you know what fashion or manner I should do it in? E-mail, Chat, or actual Phone Call?
Do you know what fashion or manner I should do it in? E-mail, Chat, or actual Phone Call?
All the above ... I always start with chat first, then email, and a phone call last to bitch someone out for promo credits not issued etc.

I've always just used email to deal with credit issues and it has never failed me yet - though I haven't been trading much since December so I don't know if anything has changed in that regard.

Ditto this...would love to know the answer.

I saw in the OP that you can ship games from the same order separately but what about the opposite. If I have several open trade-ins on Amazon, can I ship them all in the same box? Or will that screw them up since they each have their own UPS tracking number? I've traded to them before but only combining what I combined on their site. Any help would be great. Thanks.

That could cause problems with the estimated weight. I noticed that the recent orders I submitted were prepaid for up to 1lb. I'd be careful.

As far as cartridge games go, you best bet might be to contact a service rep via chat. I did this when I wanted to trade in some GBA games a few months ago. They ask you which games, then check with the people who get Amazons trade-ins.

I read in the OP that you can send in multiple shipments. Do you get credit as they receive the trade ins? For example, if I submit 3 games for trade ins, and send 2 in, will I get credit for the 2?
What's the highest a wii has traded in for? I see it's currently at 99. Anyone seen or gotten higher?
Depends on the bundle. http://ativ.scurker.com/search?q=wii (sort by tiv, click on the tracker icon). You can view a history of the tiv changes and hover over the graph to see the values.

Not sure which one you're talking about, but the highest would appear to be the red hardware bundle @ $170.

That's pretty cool, but on a whim I contacted Amazon and asked them why the white Wii was $20 more, and he didn't have an answer. But he said once my trade in is approved, if I e-mail them the trade in transaction number, he will give me an extra $20.

I LOVE AMAZON!

I'm trading in my Wii and games to buy a new TV!

I may regret this, but I have wikified the thread so people can add interesting tiv reports to the fp. be good net citizens please. if it gets abused I'll just close the thread up and start clean, but I'd rather not.

also, would anyone have an interest in a twitter bot that can either respond to queries for a tiv or regularly post the highest tivs?

sent in my kinect with some games they got my games but didnt recieve my kinect yet so i talked to customer service they gave me 75 credit for my kinect anyways a day later sent me my kinect back cuz i didnt send a power supply in with it? o well still got my 75 credit i'm happy lol

So I received my Xbox 360 and apparently the harddrive was damaged, tested it out, it wasn't. My copy of a game I sent it, came back with some cracks in the center but it is still playable. I packed in everything very well and I don't believe it was caused by shipping. Also, my 360 was covered in dust, extremely and the disc drive doesn't close anymore. you have to push it in. anybody know if I can at least get some credit on this?? has anybody had a similar story and got something back?

Got my $25 credit for Fallout New Vegas that I traded in after buying the CE for $30.

Trade in for Reach Legendary Edition is 48 bucks. Not a bad deal if you used up/sold the codes and no longer play the game.

EDIT; Also, $28 credit for Fable and $14 for Dante's Inferno (xbox) Not bad at all.

did they give you a return tracking number? or did it just mysterious arrive back at your house one day?

I read the OP and didn't find the answer. I traded in a bunch of game last year and my Amazon trade-in account has tons of those Closed transactions. Each time I clicked trade-in account, it took forever to load the trade in page. Does anyone know how to delete these closed transactions? Thanks a lot.

Okay, I wrote to them about my Trade in problem on how I received my Xbox 360 damaged. They said they will message me back in about 1 to 2 days. Am I in on some credit they might give me?

I also had this problem and I even emailed Amazon about it and this was the response:

Hello,

I understand your desire to remove order information from your account. We are, however, unable to fulfill your request.

As the Privacy Policy posted on our website notes, in using and purchasing from Amazon.com you might supply information such as your name, address, and phone number; e-mail address; credit card information; and other relevant information about people to whom purchases have been shipped, including address and phone number.

You can view or edit much of the account information you provide through the Your Account link on our site. However, like most businesses, we keep records pertaining to our business, including the dates, amounts, and types of purchases made, so that we can service your account appropriately and to satisfy other business and legal obligations and needs that we have. In accordance with our records-retention requirements we cannot remove this account information from our system until our business need for the information has expired, as it is part of our business transaction records.

I want to say it is a canned response though it does make some sense. I emailed them about this in November so I am just using a different account now in order to trade because I can't access my trade in page at all.

Mind elaborating why Amazon banned your account? Seems pretty harsh.

Sold one of those eye of judgement games without the eyetoy camera. The first line of the listing was "DOES NOT INCLUDE CAMERA" and it was priced at like $12 while the rest were closer to $40.

Well, some guy buys it, then complains that it doesn't have the camera. Complains to amazon, boom, banned. Amazon gives zero recourse for bans as well. In fact, they banned my then-gf now-wife's account because she logged in while selling textbooks at my apartment and they tied the IP addresses together.

Amazon is crazy about their marketplace.

Battlefield Bad Company 2 is up to $21.00. Most you're gonna get for it anywhere ever again, I'd bet.

Looks like 3DS trade in values got a big bump too. $27 for Pilotwings and SSF4.

Seirously considering trading Dead Rising 2 with the announcement of Dead Rising 2: Frank West edition or whatever. It's at $21 today..

Very odd they banned your whole account, and not just your selling privileges. Also, I've had buyers not read the description before, but they always e-mailed me first and I took care of it.

There has to be more to the story, just seems so "unAmazon" like. Was it a complain in form of an A-Z? If so, they usually won't even allow it to go through until the buyer contacts the seller.

it was a banned selling account, not total account.

I think it was because I told the guy that he should have read the description and wasn't going to give a refund. I guess I should have just offered a refund and let him waste my time.

Ah - okay that makes sense. Yes, what you did was technically against the TOS, even though you weren't trying to scam. A refund would have definitely absolved any issues. With that said, I don't think all is lost. You could write asking them to reinstate your account.

I have, and they won't. From what I've read elsewhere they likely don't even read the reinstatement pleas. And the IP address scanning is prevalent too. Don't let anyone who's been banned from amazon log onto their buying account at your house or you'll get banned too.
For people wondering about carts only. I sent in a bunch of cart only 64 games and they accepted them.
Awesome, thanks for the info.

I think now would be a good time to trade in consoles if you were thinking about it. xbox 360 slim 250gb is currently at 220.00 (360 elite w 120gb is 205 even), ps3 160gb is at 211.50. Even DSs got a bump from their trade-in promo values.

What required to trade-in a DS Lite? I sent one in last week with several other items and all of my items were credited to my account this morning.

My DS Lite is/was in excellent working condition, no screen scratches due to screen protectors, and included both the stylus and charger. I even made sure it was fully charged before I shipped it out.

I'm a little worried that all of my other games, in the SAME package, were given accepted and given credit while the email lists my DS Lite as "Not Yet Received". I've never sent any sort of console or handheld into Amazon/Noram before. Do they have some sort of testing process to go through?

Has anyone else ever ran into this issue where their DS system hasn't been credited, or shown as received, along with other items in the same trade-in order and package? Or is this cause for concern and I should contact Amazon Customer Service today?

Thanks people!

Ugh, never mind. I just received a second email stating that my DS Lite is being returned and marked as "damaged item". Lame. The only possible damage I can think of is the small, non-issue, hair-line crack on top of the left hinge. It's been there for years and has never increased in size. Weak.

Guess I'll take it to Gamestop, or eBay it, whenever I receive it back in the mail.

Had my first questionable trade in with Amazon today. I traded in several games and two controllers in the same package. The games were credited to my account just fine, but the controllers were both listed as "Not yet received".

To their credit, I started a chat with Amazon, and the rep gave me credit equivalent to the amount of the two controllers.

It's all fine, but I wonder how the hardware items "disappeared". I'm glad I didn't try to trade in more valuable hardware with them.
I think now would be a good time to trade in consoles if you were thinking about it. xbox 360 slim 250gb is currently at 220.00 (360 elite w 120gb is 205 even), ps3 160gb is at 211.50. Even DSs got a bump from their trade-in promo values.
The extra 5 added to the DSlite was enough to push me to trade my old one in.

How likely is it for an older xbox 360 to get accepted, if I package it in the box from my new xbox slim? I have everything else.

not very likely....besides, they don't want older xbox models as i found out the hard way....i turned everything in like brand new i had all manuals, even all the little baggies the system came in with.......my disc drive now doesnt work anymore...it came with dirt covered all over the system.

Both of my Reach: Legendary editions were accepted just fine. I was worried about both of them because there's so much stuff in the package. I was worried they'd mark something as missing, even though it was all there.
Had my first questionable trade in with Amazon today. I traded in several games and two controllers in the same package. The games were credited to my account just fine, but the controllers were both listed as "Not yet received".

How long did you wait after getting credit for the games? I think hardware and software are looked at separately.

First Amazon trade ins that I'm positive were rejected due to them damaging the games*. I sent in a box of 6 games. They claim two of the games were "damaged - cracked". When I ship games in a box I wrap them up in a ton of bubble wrap and unless someone dropped a really heavy box or something on them there is no way the could have been damaged. That is complete BS and it had better be the case that is cracked and not the game discs.

I will definitely be contacting Amazon when I get the games back and hope they give me credit for them. These weren't inexpensive games. I'm definitely no longer trading in to Amazon unless the TIV is extremely high.

*I had one game out of many traded in rejected due to damage before, but it was a less expensive game I shipped in a bubble mailer so couldn't say it was definitely them that caused the damage. But I've had hundreds of games shipped to me in bubble mailers from AWD through UPS and not a single one has been damaged so I am pretty sure it was their fault.

Hardware/acessories trades seem to take a day or two longer to be processed than game trades....probably because they need to test out the hardware while with games, they can eyeball everything and make the call right then and there.

Trading in a system to AMZ just seems like a lot of hassle whereas games are so simple and tidy. Then again, if you're getting serious $$$ why not?!
