Welcome to the Official CAG Amazon.com Trade-In Thread

Hey trade-in pals! SENDING THINGS IN DISC / CARTRIDGE ONLY / GENERIC CASE NO MANUAL / ANYTHING BUT COMPLETE COULD RESULT IN REJECTION. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS. YOU MIGHT GET ACCEPTED, YOU MIGHT NOT. NO ONE KNOWS. THERE ARE NO HARD AND FAST RULES. IF IT IS ACCEPTED, IT WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY ONLY BE CONSIDERED "ACCEPTABLE." RISK YOUR TIME AND EFFORT AT YOUR PERIL!
I'm getting an acceptance rate of about one per day; it makes me think some supervisor is standing around with a glass of absinthe next to a couple of dumptruck loads of games...while the one responsible for the glitch is made to scan each item and recite its TIV with tears in their eyes.
THANKS TO DISILLUSION386 and GI60 FOR POSTING AND MAINTAINING THE PREVIOUS AMAZON TRADE-IN FAQ THREADS

This thread’s primary purpose is to discuss Amazon.com’s video game trade-in program. Conspiracy theories about NORAM smashing games before sending them back / stealing children / sneezing and touching public door handles / etc welcome, but try to avoid going nutso. GENERAL FAQ (Updated 06/07/2011)
Can I post a question on this thread?
  • Only if you can't find the answer from below. And please let me know if it needs to be added to FAQ.
Can I edit this FAQ? (updated 6/7/11)
  • You bet! Up top there is a section for notable TIVs - feel free to add anything in there (and if you can remember, clean up after yourself in a few days when the TIV has undoubtedly dropped). You can edit the FAQ too, please just make sure it's useful and well formatted! Thanks!
Since when did Amazon start doing trades?
  • The program began in 2009 and is handled by a third party merchant, NorAm International.
What kind of shipping does Amazon provide us?
  • Free UPS ground ---- USPS is no longer available for free. There is now also an option to provide your own shipping.
Do I have to provide my own box or envelope?
  • Yes.
Do all my games in the same trade-in submission have to be shipped in the same box? (updated 3/9/11)
  • Not necessarily - people have sent in multiple boxes for the same trade-in submission successfully. It's even possible to send half at one time and the other half at the end of the valid shipping period. However, it's probably best to always ship everything at once.
Can I put separate trades in to a single box? (updated 6/7/11)
  • Sure, and they'll likely be accepted just fine. However, it isn't recommended since you would only have proof that you sent one of the trades (whichever mailing label you used). So it can be pretty risky.
Can I send in sealed games?
  • Yes. They won't reject games that still have the original shrink wrap.
Can I add Delivery Confirmation and Insurance to my shipment?
  • UPS Ground already provides you with tracking information, and I imagine you could get some sort of insurance added at a UPS store or location if you were so inclined.
I don't trust UPS ground. Can I pay for postage myself? What's the address?
  • Yes. You're more than welcome to do so. The address is:
    NorAm International
    22 Hampshire Dr
    Hudson, NH 03051
(This is also an option when submitting your trades)
When do I have to send my games once I have submitted my trade order?
  • You have 1 week (7 days) to send your games. There have been reports of submitting trades up to 15 - 20 days late, but that is definitely ymmv. Send on time for the best chance at success!
Crap, I have one day to go before my shipment deadline, but the website states that my deadline has already passed. How do I print out a shipping label and packing slip?
  • Load up any existing order (if you don't have any, check your browser's history or just submit a new one to use the link), and substitute the transaction ID for the trade-in order you need at the end of the URL.
How long does the whole trade-in process usually take?
  • From the time you send in your games, it may take up to 14 business days for the package to arrive. Most people usually receive their credit (Amazon GiftCard) in 3 to 5 business days, however.
How long does the "processing" status usually take? (Updated 6/8/11)
  • Usually a day or with little delay at all, but the longest reported days so far is 4.
My games were received on Friday (based on Delivery Confirmation), will I have to wait until Monday to receive credit?
  • People have received credit on a Saturday.
I do not have the manual, cover art, or original case for a game I want to trade in. Will they accept it? (updated 6/9/11)
  • While the details specifically state that original packaging is necessary, people have reported in the past that their trades were accepted despite missing some of these. This is extremely YMMV, however since some were also rejected by missing manual or cover art. On the other hand, older gen games; such as SNES, N64, and GB cartridges, normally get accepted without the original box and manual, but still YMMV.

It should be noted that with the new condition requirements (see later in the FAQ), you may be able to send an item in missing some or all of the required items (manual / cover art / case) and still have it accepted in "Acceptable" condition.
I do not have the manual, accessories, original box, original included game, etc for a console or accessory I want to trade in. Will they accept it? (updated 3/9/11)
  • The current wisdom is "probably not" - it's pretty YMMV but NorAm seems stricter than they should be on this. Your chances seem to be better for them accepting a console or accessory without the box / manual / etc if it's older generation or rare. You're more than welcome to give it a shot though if you're feeling lucky - just pack it well and include as much as you can!
My game is really beat up, what are the chances they’ll accept it?
  • This is YMMV. Some people have reported in the past that they sent in games in bad shape that were still accepted. Your best bet is still to trade in games in mint condition. Minor scratches are expected as these are used games.
My game came with DLC codes and I used them. Will my game be accepted? (Updated 12/28/11)
  • It is expected that included DLC codes have already been redeemed, so you should be fine. It is a kindness however if you have no use for it to not redeem it and let the next lucky soul who buys it from awd or wherever have a crack at it. Up to you!
My cover art (PLATINUM HITS) differs from the pic on amazon, will my trade be accepted?
  • It all depends on the UPC so just turn your game around, type in the UPC into the amazon search box. If the game comes up, then it's accepted regardless of cover art. Click on that result to submit your trade.
I have a game from a limited edition bundle, will they accept it?
  • If the game’s cover art has a UPC barcode, they will most likely accept it. If your game's cover states "Not for Resale" and does not have a UPC barcode, the game will most likely get rejected. Some people have had their games accepted in the past, but this is very YMMV.
The UPC barcode is not intact on my game's cover art, will that be accepted? (updated 3/9/11)
  • This is YMMV, but probably not. The UPC is all powerful within the walls of NorAm.
I sent in my games, all of which were in pristine condition with the original packaging, but they said that one game is damaged and is now being returned.
  • Always pack your games well. Put a lot of newspaper around your games in the box to secure them and to prevent any damages from haphazard box cutting. People in the past have requested their entire trade-in order if it’s obvious the damage wasn’t their fault, and Amazon ended up accepting the rejected game. This is YMMV as well.
Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
  • Yes. Once you click “Trade in” for a particular game, you may change the quantities. Once you submit, you can no longer change quantities on that trade-in batch.
How many multiple copies of the same game can I trade-in (updated 1/11/11)?
  • Maximum of 2 copies within 3 a month period.
I locked in X copies of a game but I now only have Y available to send. Can I just send in Y without being penalized? (updated 3/9/11)
  • Yes, you can always just send in a portion of your trade-in order and they'll just credit you for whatever they receive. However, the quantities you submitted for will stay locked in that instance (I think) so if you, for example, submitted for 2 copies and only sent 1, you may not be able to trade any more copies of that game for 3 months (see previous question).
Will the Trade-in of the Day TIV stay for 24 hours?
  • It's been reported that there is a limit (maximum # of copies) that will get the promoted TIV so lock yours.
So if I find a good flip, I can just send 2 copies of that game and not worry about Amazon accusing me of stolen merchandise?
  • Technically yes, but do keep in mind that other CAGs might want to participate in the current deal, and trading in a large number of the same game will definitely lower the TIV of said game. Let’s be nice to other people. This is probably moot for most folks now with the per account / address trade-in limit.
Wow, these TIVs suck (updated 3/9/11)!
  • Really? Hrm. While that may be true, they're often better than other comparable places. Your options of what to do with your used games are greater now than they've ever been, so feel free to shop your trades around or just sell them off on glyde/gamestaq/ebay/whatever. Also, not a question.
What the fuck? The TIV of a game I just bought for this deal tanked! What do I do?
  • The TIVs on Amazon fluctuate depending on the number of trades that are submitted, and we really can’t do anything about it. The best course of action for trading in games is to lock in your trade if you already have the games or are absolutely sure that you can obtain them. You can always cancel the trade submission if you end up not finding the games.
LOCK = SUBMIT YOUR TRADE, Don't just put it in the cart.
Can I edit a submitted trade?
  • Nope - once upon a time you could modify trade in quantities of submitted trades, but that ability has been removed.
Can I use my credit on items that are not video game-related?
  • Yes. This is the other perk for trading in games at Amazon since you're not limited to just video games.
Can I use my credit on items sold by third-party merchants on Amazon?
  • According to the fine print of the Amazon gift card use, some merchants are excluded. Your best bet is to try it on the checkout page of your order.
Strategy guides? I can trade in game/strategy guides? Whaaaaa?
  • Go to the Textbook Buyback section (http://www.amazon.com/Textbooks-Trad...ode=2205237011). You can either search on the title of a strategy guide you have to see if they'll accept it, or search for guides. The two best search strings to start with are 'prima guides' and 'bradygames'. Might try 'doublejump' if you want to trade in some of those. (Thanks eugaet)
I locked in some hilariously overvalued trade for some weird rare game/accessory/etc that I can pick up for cheap cheap cheap. They didn't accept it. What should I do? (updated 3/9/11)
  • The truth is that NORAM can reject things for any reason they see fit. While some people have managed to get silly things like a $200 credit for some cheerleading game (or for a PS2 - just ask io!), it's sooooooo YMMV that often it's not worth the effort. EXPECT REJECTION ON THINGS THAT ARE CLEARLY MISVALUED. That said, as long as you're willing to risk it, go for it!
What's all this item condition nonsense? And how can I get screwed over by it? (updated 6/9/11)
  • We're still kinda sussing out the details surrounding the new item condition portion of Amazon Trade-Ins, but it looks like there's a couple things to consider:
    • Good Condition eligibility (games):
    • - The video game, original manufacturer packaging and all original elements are included, but shows wear from normal use
      - Game still plays perfectly
      - Disc may have light scratches and other elements may have minor damage
      - Item may have been personalized (marked or identified)

      [*]Acceptable eligibility (games):

      - Game still plays perfectly
      - Item may have been personalized (marked or identified)
      - Item may be missing or have irreparable damage to one or all of the following: case, manual, artwork, bundled accessories, UPC

[*]Note that a game will almost certainly not be accepted if it meets any of these conditions:

      - Game does not play perfectly
      - Disc is cracked
      - Marked Not for Resale (or is otherwise marked not for sale)
Consoles/accessories have some slightly different criteria, but the idea is the same.
Did it seriously just ask me if I wanted my game / other item returned if they refuse to give me credit for it? (updated 6/9/11)
  • Yes, that just happened.

Unless you're purposefully sending them things you deem to be trash, please remember to choose the option that has them return your item to you during the checkout phase.
Who is AFS? (updated 6/9/11)
  • Not sure yet, but that's the name on the trade-in shipping labels now instead of NORAM. May just be NORAM with a different name. This will be updated as we learn more.
Post away!
Personally, I'd send in Mario Parties 5 and 7 and Wario World (I play MP primarily with my brother and sister, who both regard MP4 as being the last good installment, and I never really got into WW).

Also, based on what's been said, I think you'd be taking a risk sending in your packaging-less Wavebirds, so it's up to you; I wouldn't do it, but that's just me. :)
That's good advice. I'm not that attached to the Mario Party or Wario games as much as the other ones. I just like having every Mario game for Gamecube. They are all complete and pretty much mint except Wario World has some scratches.

I think you're right about the Wavebirds. It's not worth Noram damaging them on the slim chance they for some reason accept mine when they rejected others.

I'm wondering did anyone keep the plastic clamshell packaging for the Wavebirds? I bought them used at Gamestop, so I never had them. I'm such a psychotic anal retentive collector that I do keep all the packaging for everything videogame related (even plastic clamshell stuff). But I'm not married yet and I have a spare bedroom for all that junk.
Nintendo's pretty good about offering their back catalog for download, so I'd definitely expect to see Sunshine and Luigi's Mansion available for purchase if not on the Wii U then definitely on whatever follows that.

That's the justification I used anyway.
Damn, this is good advice too. If I trade in all those mario games along with the other games I'm trading, I'll have enough for the $350 Wii U and some Wii Point cards.

I'm not sure what I'll do. I guess I have a few more days to think before my trades expire. I just found out about these awesome TIVs before the bubble burst. I flip games sometimes, but I never traded in anything from my personal collection before.

Thanks for your input guys.

Shit I missed Rogue Squardon. I have like 7 copies form garage sales. I have 12 items to package today. Hopefully some of them will pay out. My Psone is still processing form 4 days ago.

I got credit for every $30 game I sent in (some as acceptable so more like $21). I have a few more packages going out today but the only thing that got denied for me so far is the GB Color.

^ I can second that result. All of my 30 dollar games have been approved for the full amount, and I'm 8 for 10 with cart only n64/gba games being approved as 'acceptable'.

(all of my 30 dollar games that are past the 'processing' stage)

Sending in Super Mario World GBA as "good", but it appears I don't have the cardboard insert that holds the game in place (I've got all the other inserts, manuals, and box). Considering its a $30 vs $3 difference, think I should chance it?

Similar experience here: Disc games were complete and I'm seeing the good value (usually 30) from them. Carts were all loose and I'm getting acceptable. A few rejections that I'm not at all surprised about, and DK64 rejected which did surprise me. The reason give in "disc missing"... figure that one out!?!?

Also, my loose Grape GBC in not great shape was accepted, but downgraded to acceptable so I got $30 for it (instead of $85 at good). I must have mis-read on that because I thought you didn't have to have packaging for good on hardware. Either way, happy with 30 for it.
Anybody get credit today? I wonder if they've put things on hold since the bottom dropped out while they work out whatever with Amazon.
I've had three boxes of stuff get credited this morning.

Yeah I had a bunch of $30/21 GC games and $21 GBA games get paid out thus morning. I am a little suprised and hopeful the majority of my stuff in transit gets accepted next week. Please please!!

Damn. I missed the $85 for a "good" Gameboy color. I have an extra one that's "like new" and I have a pretty good idea of where the retail box is for it.

$30 is still really good. I think I paid something like $9.99 for one at Gamestop a long while back.

I sent in a DK64 as well...I shjould know if mine gets accepted today as they have credited half my box so far this morning(only the complete games so far)....but I bet disc missing may have something to do with the expansion that was required for it...never thought about it til you said you got rejected.

On a similar note, anyone have their animal crossing gc accepted at any level with out the memrycard pictured on the cover.

Man, I didn't even think to check for Game Boy hardware. I've got two pockets and a color in my drawer here that are in decent shape. Probably could have scooped up around $75 for the lot of 'em.

It was only the Grape one for whatever reason, so unless you had that one, don't beat yourself up about it. I actually just found a grape one at Goodwill but passed because I couldn't get it to load a game properly.

Good point, I hadn't considered that at all either.

I'd like to know this as well since I have it locked in but haven't mailed it yet.

Yep, I have that one. I have two actually, but one I would have kept. The other I would have traded in with the original box...

*goes back to beating himself up* ;)
Anybody get credit today? I wonder if they've put things on hold since the bottom dropped out while they work out whatever with Amazon.
I had a credit get applied for a different pair of games than the $30 stuff that arrived yesterday and was credited today.

Got paid for 4 GC games today that were delivered yesterday. PSX games that were also delivered yesterday still say Not Received. PSX games that were received today say Processing, so wondering what is going on with other set.
Anybody get credit today? I wonder if they've put things on hold since the bottom dropped out while they work out whatever with Amazon.
I was credited $30 for a Good Thrasher: Skate and Destroy, but there are seven other transactions pending (six of which have 1-2 copies of a single game and the seventh of which has four GC games I found at GS, and whose total expected value is ~$280). Two of them are cart-only N64 games with no imperfections or damage that I could see, so hopefully they'll be accepted at the Acceptable value.

my textbook got rejected, because they stated it was the wrong edition, when i checked before shipping it to them. made me wasted ink to print out those free shipping labels, lol

Everything is boxed and ready to ship. Every game I traded at minimum has game and instruction manual. That should be good enough for acceptable. A few are complete in box so that should be enough for good. Looking at getting $160 or so in credit. Decided not to send out my Wavebird.

Hoping everything goes through. Going to use my credit on Pokemon White 2 and then save the rest for Black Friday! :)

Aaaaand I just got confirmation on the two cart-only N64 games--$42 total, which is a relief since those were the only ones I was worried would be rejected. :D

Wait. No, I take that back. There's still two transactions with cart-only GBA games (Godzilla: Domination and Cabela's Big Game Hunter)that worry me. :whistle2:x

EDIT: Also got confirmation on the 4-GC game transaction for another $72.65 (for the curious, the games were Dr. Muto, Goblin Commander, Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure, and MLB Slugfest 2004; the first two were judged Good and the other two Acceptable). Not bad considering I paid ~$11 GS credit for the lot of them. ;)

Both have the same time associated with it. Got the guy's name, but hopefully won't have to do anything with it. ;)

Got $30 for 007 Nightfire and Doom, $21 for Simpsons Hit and Run for missing coverart and manual, and $16.45 for Spongebob: Revenge of the Flying Dutchmen for missing the manual.

Now all I await is for my Starfox Adventures, Bomberman Generations, and Smuggler's Run Warzones to finish processing hopefully netting me another $71.90.

My goldeneye 007 got rejected for $21 TIV. All it says was unacceptable.

Not sure why though the game worked fine and label was in tact. All that was wrong was it had a piece of tape on the label. It was clear tape though. Sucks for me.

Had my first rejection from this deal. My cart only DKC was rejected due to "extreme damage" which is BS since it was a clean cart. I guess I'll see what condition it comes back in.

I got amazon to give me $3 credit for a 30 or so cent increase in Green Day Rock Band. I declined the $3 and took $1 but the guy was impressed so he gave me $2 promotion credit lol.

I know they will accept black ops because I bought it new for $10 and barely played it. And got Green Day for $1.06 also new.

At least yours was clear cut if they actually listed extreme damage.

Mine just said unacceptable yet it matched the trade in gudie lines.

I think its a luck of the draw which employees you get processing your games. That and many other variables. Too much stock of a game is probably another reason to deny a trade in.

Yeah, I don't mind getting it back since it was from my personal collection, but if it is beat up now they are going to hear from me.

AWESOME. My Playstation One trade in for $200 just got accepted. I listed it as 'Like New' expecting it would get knocked down to 'Good' as the controller cord was slightly discolored, but they gave me the full $200 for it. Super happy :)

Nice. Maybe i should have sent mine in after all. Oh well.
Whaa? Did you have the box and everything?
Yes. I had everything (Original box, system, controller, power cable, TV cable, and instructions). Box was in perfect condition. Only issue was with the controller cable, though it was still in good condition. I took pictures of everything in case they tried to damage the system and send it back. I guess I do not need those pictures now. It has been listed as processing since Monday so I was starting to get my hopes up.

Yeah, mine is still processing as of this post, but mine did not have the box. I would be happy to get $60 considering I bought it for $3 at a garage sale.

I would have been happy with $60 as well. I believe I purchased mine off ebay for $20 years ago. I tried reselling it on Ebay about two years ago and no one bit, so it has been sitting in a closet for a couple of years just collecting dust.

Maybe you did this, but above where it says "Unacceptable" there is a link that probably says 'Incorrect Condition'. You may get more info if you click on that.

I had a Pokemon Crystal and Gold both rejected because of Severe Damage. Took pictures before I sent them and I certainly don't see severe damage.
It was only the Grape one for whatever reason, so unless you had that one, don't beat yourself up about it. I actually just found a grape one at Goodwill but passed because I couldn't get it to load a game properly.
Hah, grape is exactly what I had.
Nice. Maybe i should have sent mine in after all. Oh well.
Didn't you send in a PS2 when they had the TIV for the fat one at $200 and it was rejected?

I thought you did among the other people who were rejected back during that last bit of fun with TIVs.

I had 3 accepted straight from gamestop, with non original av cords. That's back when you could send in console with no packaging and get the full price. Nowdays theyre all box/wrapping crazy.
fuck guys, I need some advice. I can't decide if I want $191 worth of Amazon credit or if I want Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Sunshine, Mario party 4, 5, 7, Wario World, and Super Smash Bros Melee sitting on my shelf forever. Opinions?

I should mention I've been a die hard Mario fan my entire life (not as much as Sonic though :p )
I went through the same dilemma.

I ended up (or will end up as I haven't sent them all in yet) trading the following (all $30 unless otherwise noted):

GBA games: Mario Kart Super Curcuit, Super Mario Advance 4: SMB3, Metroid Fusion

GC games: Mario Party 4, Kirby Air Ride ($29.80), Luigi's Mansion, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Adventure DX, Starfox Assault, Pikmin, Burnout 2 ($23.50), Disney Skate Adventure ($20), Animal Crossing ($24.20), Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters $16.45) Melee, Ty Tasmanian Tiger ($15.05), Midway Arcade Treasures ($16.45), The Hobbit ($16.45), and Pikmin

But I left a lot on the table too:

I kept SSBM, SMS, Paper Mario 1000 Year Door, Wario World, all the other Mario Party games besides 4, the Rogue Squadron games, Wind Waker, and a few others. Probably a mistake in the long run, but oh well...

It was a series of hard decisions since all of mine are from my collection and in near pristine condition. If worse comes to worse, I can probably sell some of that stuff for nearly the same amount (if not better).

Dammit - my first package of 3 GBA games has been "Processing" since Monday. And you people are getting paid in 1 day. WTF!?
will they downgrade/ not accept a game because it has gamestop sale stickers on them?
Not sure, but I always rip off as much of the stickers as I can just in case.
For some reason there is no option to trade in the Dead Island GOTY edition so I submitted it as the regular version. Hopefully they take it.
I think the fact they didn't offer anything for GOTY edition shows what your chances are.

They offer over 13 bucks for the regular one though so it's not like I'm trading in a $.50 game.

Also Dead Space 2 for 360 is at $10.30 for anyone who was able to get it in the recent $5 sales.

Batman Arkham city for PS3 is at $20.00. I sent my copy off today, but when I submitted the trade it was only at $19.25. Still a good price. I hope to be able to get the game of the year edition this holiday season for $20 or less.

Is it the same barcode as the regular? If not form what I have read they will not take it, but you never know.
