Still why is it so much more then the standard CE guide? It comes with the same guide, a calender, a patch, 5 magnets, and a bottle opener. The magnets looks cheap as hell.
Bethesda is sucking every penny they can with the artificial hype built around this game we have only seen for a few minutes at E3... and they refuse to show any of... (maybe it sucks?)

You are going to pay $54 more than just the guide to get:

a Nuka Cola metal bottle opener, five magnetic bottle caps, and a Nuka Cola embroidered patch.

I never cared for the Fallout games very much, but the hype behind 4 is mind boggling. If it lives up, I'll be quite surprised.

It's also hilarious how small the minority is that's calling Bethesda out for this bullshit merchandising. If it was any other developer all the little gaming hipsters would be screaming bloody murder at these pathetic merchandising attempts. I guess Bethesda gets a pass.

Their games are also know for having a ton of bugs too but a lot of people give that a pass as well. Just the way the cookie crumbles these days.

When the bugs break things, people will call them out (deleting saves and such). However, there are some bugs that honestly make the game more entertaining. In Fallout 3, I was fighting a Deathclaw, and it literally shot up so high in the air at random that I couldn't see it, then it just came crashing to the ground. In Skyrim, a mammoth just started floating and sliding sideways. It's just funny to see. The problem is that with a lot of games, their smaller scope doesn't leave room for such things. Instead, their bugs often cause major problems, the worst being with competitive multiplayer, of course.

Ehh, people don't jump on Minecraft merchandising too hard. I mean, it's a game about LEGOs, and they made a LEGO site of it. Toys, clothes, all the rest, there's a crapload. People are giving Nintendo a pass on the billions of amiibo. Pokemon gets a pretty serious pass for its card games, video games, plushes, and all of that. Really, Fallout is the rare game that gets merchandised to hell and isn't aimed at kids.

Some of the bugs add to the charm like the giants club slamming caused people to get shot up in the air in skyrim or doc mitchell's head spinning in new vegas. The memory problems that caused gamebreaking issues in the ps3 version of skyrim was a problem and lambasted as such.

Honestly, I'm in a similar situation as the other guy, I have the pipboy edition at BBY and with GCU it is $100. I love fallout 3 and new vegas and am really looking forward to FO4. I didn't really care about a pipboy phone case though but I figured I'd preorder when it was announced in case it sold out and I changed my mind. Low and behold it did sell out and was a really sought after item so I figured if I got and didn't want it, I could get rid of it with little issue. But the price has fallen drastically since its announcement and it's only gonna drop further when the thing actually releases as the hordes scramble to offload their copies. So now the only thing really keeping me from canceling is that it's rare. Though I collect games, I almost never buy collectors editions but this year I bought MGSV, FO4, and BLOPS3. Dumb as it is, I really liked the fake hand from MGS, I have it holding my outlaw star ship figure and I'm really thrilled about the BLOPS fridge. But man, I keep thinking I should just cancel my pipboy and just get the version with the season pass.
You could always get it and then have your mgs arm wear the pip boy while it's holding a beverage (preferably nuka cola) from your juggernog fridge.

There is going to be a ultimate bro juggernog edition with beer pong cups, a random degree from either Penn State, University of Florida, or the University of Arizona, and a rape kit. Talk about merchandising.

Not even kidding, I 100% thought about doing that exact thing for a funny photo. Though I was gonna use Mt. Dew and I think the arm is too small for the pipboy. Though perhaps it would be funnier if I filled the fridge with my eight copies of wii fit for irony. At this point, though if you consider the gcu discount, the pipboy is costing me an extra $50 as opposed to just getting the game. Can't say it feels worth it. A fridge I can at least use, the pipboy is a plastic shell with no built in screen. The fridge also comes with cosmetic dlc I can offload and the season pass which I was going to get anyways. I just wish they would do a unboxing of the pipboy soon so I could get a better look at the final product. But hell, the game is what, 3 weeks out and they haven't been putting out any gameplay videos so I don't expect much in the way of an unboxing.

I laughed too hard at this. Goddammit Slowdive, it's too early!

Bullshit merchandising?

They are a company in business to make money. It's not hard to understand that they want to make as much money as they can, it's what a business is designed to do.

I mean if you don't want it then don't buy it. All the merchandise isn't required to play the game. The hoodies, fallout beer, watches, messenger bags and such have nothing to do with the game, it's just there for the fans. I wouldn't buy it buts it's cool they made it for the people who do want it.

And no, no one would scream bloody murder if it were anyone else. Look at nintendo, they whore their game icons out more than anyone else does. Or halo. Or world ofwarcraft. There are plenty of developers who have created more junk for their games than bethesda.

I can think of a few companies or games that would be getting a ton of hate if they did this much merchandising advertisement.

No, not even close. There are people who complain about amiibo, but most of those complaints are "make more so I can buy them too!" No one complains about Pokemon cards. Halo doesn't get the merchandising that Fallout 4 has gotten. I don't honestly care that much that Bethesda's doing this. Like you said, their business, their profits, their IP, their choice. If I don't want stuff, I don't have to buy it. HOWEVER, that they're making a personal decision doesn't mean they're not allowed to be criticized, and I don't get why people think that's some cure-all comeback to a complaint.

Seriously, those examples you gave don't even come close in comparison. Halo 5, the Nintendo stuff, even WoW, they're so different. The recent releases aren't getting this level of merchandising, and to have an equivalent to the amount of merchandising for Fallout 4, you basically have to span the entirety of those game franchises (10-20 years). Fallout 4 is getting: 2 artbooks at $50+ each. A $130 bundle that doesn't even include the game. A wired, third-party controller priced like a first-party wireless one ($60). More jewelry and clothes than I can bother to count (including $120 each for a ring and a necklace). A $400 SNOWBOARD. Is there a snowboard for Halo 5? I doubt it.

Fallout 3 was the first Fallout game I played and I enjoyed the hell out of it but I agree here. Fallout 4 really doesn't look all that revolutionary or innovative, it just looks like the next step in the series. I mean, I'm getting it day one but the amount of Fallout 4 hype is ludicrous. I don't think there's anything wrong with merchandising, nearly every company is doing it now. But they're clearly gouging the hell out of the fanfare here.

With all of that said though... these games don't exactly come out regularly (vs the regular releases of stuff like CoD or AssCreed). They clearly spend a lot of time in development and there is a ridiculous amount of content in these games (not to mention the lore) so the huge burst of fanfare is somewhat understandable.

I guess I should say "cash grab" instead of merchandising. Yeah, that fits better.
Maybe you should say a for profit business instead of "cash grab". They also have been making merchandise for a long time, so obviously someone is buying it. How dare they their fill a consumer need! What villains! Maybe you should report them to the better business bureau.

Forgive me, I'll never criticize a video game publisher/developer business decision again. They're almighty and perfect in every way.

That's exactly it--we don't get these games every day. Honestly, I never got around to New Vegas (which, why wasn't that Fallout 4? I don't get how their names/canon work, in that case), so Fallout 4 is the follow-up to Fallout 3 for me, meaning I've not had one of these games in probably 5+ years. I still wouldn't say I'm more excited for it than Halo, while The Division might be the only other game I'd say interests me more than Fallout 4.

Bethesda outsourced Fallout: New Vegas to a studio called Obsidian Entertainment, essentially a restructured Black Isle Studios (creators of Planescape: Torment and Fallout 1/2). Since Bethesda insists on using an incredibly shitty 10 year old engine (same engine Morrowind was on, of course there are some tweaks and improvements), Fallout New Vegas was incredibly buggy upon release just like Fallout 3 and Skyrim (again, all games on the Gamebryo engine). Bethesda gets a free pass when it comes to the topic of bugs in their games, but the same wasn't true of Obsidian which led to review scores not quite on the level of FO3.

In the end New Vegas ended up with significantly lower reviews than Fallout 3, despite NV having better writing, a far less empty world, and a lot more content (sidequests, endings, factions, all of which are essential to a game that focuses on player freedom). Due to the 84 Metacritic average, Bethesda (who required an 85) made sure that Obsidian did not get any bonuses for their (IMO quite exceptional) work despite the unreasonably tight deadlines and restrictions that were placed on Obsidian.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bethesda didn't want an outsourced game to be associated with the main series of Fallout (although Obsidian is far more qualified to make a Fallout game). That's pretty much why I'm not hyped for Fallout 4, other than the very likely possibility of save-killing bugs. I'll wait for GOTY edition on PC and mod fixes for the game.

I would like to point out that the Bethesda store has been around for a few years and the amount of Fallout related merchandise isn't anymore now then it was a year or two ago; they just include a few more items to coincide with the upcoming launch but they are ALWAYS adding new items amd the limited release stuff ALWAYS sells out so obviously they knew their market better then all those on here that are complaining about it.

Fallout has a global audience, both male and female that covers the full spectrum of age groups. The suff sells. I can't think of anything that wouldn't sell for more on eBay then it does in the Bethesda store. I actually like the fact that you can't find their merchandise on end caps in Target or Walmart like you can with COD, Halo, AC, etc. I think that makes it a little bit more "classy" (for lack of a better word) then the other gamer crap at walmart that is tucked between budweiser and Calvin peeing on a Ford Merchandise.

Same reason Vice City wasn't called GTA4 -- it was using the same exact technology and not a notable step forward.

Haha, everyone getting their panties in a wad about fallout merch.  I do love how the internet makes everyone bitch about stuff that they don't have to buy/play/do/see or even think about.

Millions of pieces of Star Wars merchandise Littered around every retailer in America, but you try to sell a fallout mug and everybody loses their s***

Lol what the hell happened to thread, didn't know Bethesda was that polarizing as a company. Personally , I see Square Enix as a bigger cash grabbing company.

Literally not mad at all. I stated an observation I had about something. It's the Internet bro, not everyone takes everything as seriously as you might believe.
Actually, the opposite could be said too, people really do take things quite seriously on the internet lol

Usually if you have to have to make a comment about someone being a fallout dick sucker, that's usually a good sign you are upset about it. At least have the class to not resort to that kind of douchebaggery if someone has a counterpoint to your claims.

Comparing Star Wars to Fallout is not a valid counterpoint. They're completely different beasts. I was mostly referring the the comment above where someone tried to make aa (poor) South Park reference.

Ehh, I've basically spent the last 5 years exhausting my rants about how asinine it is that Kingdom Hearts was spread over 6 different hardware platforms. This is different and recent, though. Don't get me wrong, I can find something to rant about with just about anything, and I'll totally jumping in HARD to play Fallout 4, but I just find some of the pricing ridiculous. I'm not sure if it's the $400 snowboard, $130 bundle that doesn't have a game, or the fact that there are TWO artbooks that are more than $50 each that I find most bizarre.

Just as some find it weird that people are up-in-arms about the merchandising, I don't get why people defend Bethesda like it's someone's child. There should be a happy medium where people are allowed to voice their unhappiness with a decision without being treated as some anti-Bethesda troll. Like I said, I'm unquestionably getting the game (probably the Gold Bundle from BB), but I find their merchandising atypically crazy.

Who the fuck cares how much stuff Bethesda sells for Fallout. If you like the merch buy it, if not bitching here isn't going to change anything.

FYI I'm not buying any of this merch from Bethesda but it's a free country so let them make the money.

Wow, are you that thick? I try to be civil with my responses here, but when you lay it on that hard and stupid, I can't bother with pleasantries.

Here's the answer for someone who seems to be struggling with the basic logic of the matter: I'd like an artbook. Those look nice. However, I'm not dying to drop $50 or $85 on said art book. $25-35? I could maybe talk myself into it. The Ultimate bundle's sweet, but not $130-with-the-game sweet. How you don't get that people have limits on what they'll pay for aesthetic pieces is beyond me.

It's no use Frier, they're going to use the "it's a free country" argument forever. They cannot correctly process the observation we've made. It's not worth the effort.

I doubt it.

I think you're looking at that the wrong way. The new UI launched with bugs. Those are being fixed now. So, they won't launch with those bugs because the beta is sorting those out. That's the whole point of the beta. I mean, I had crashing issues on games when I WASN'T on this new UI, things just happen. I wouldn't say this new UI, which will have been thoroughly tested in the wild (which the old UI wasn't before launch, since the consumers didn't have consoles), would be a major problem when it's going to have had 1-2 months of testing and fixing. Besides, better have to have the bugs at launch (people basically expect that nowadays), rather than launch the game, release an update to the OS, and THEN have it break things.

Still, I was speaking only to how they'd approach the BC update. I don't think they'll add a bunch of games to the list right now. It makes more sense to save it for the grand launch of the new UI. They said November would be the wide release, and getting Fallout 3 running when Fallout 4 releases would make logistical sense.
I think it matters because they publicly release these financial record. Investors and the media would likely be completely thrown if the measurements lead to some wild swing in reporting. If profits shot up 400% because they started measuring LIVE success, people would be confused as hell.

WUT

Hard telling. I haven't heard when they'll push the next update of BC titles, but I wouldn't expect it until they do the wide release of the new UI in November. I doubt it comes before Fallout 4 launches, but it COULD come that day.
I wouldn't think it would be that hard to figure out. The consoles were, at best, turning a small profit on a per-unit basis. As such, their sales aren't really generating revenue, especially with free games being thrown in to push the hardware. Xbox LIVE subs are almost pure profit now, since the infrastructure's setup anyway. The hardware is sold at a small profit to get people onto those high-profit subscriptions, and that's the thing that's driving the division's profits. So, they're measuring success by their most-profitable venture, rather than their least. It's the same way they're giving away Windows 10 to get people onto Office 365, OneDrive, and the other MS services.
Just to say, if you need help with those campaigns, I can assist you. I've beaten them already on Legendary.
Nope, Honestly, Halo doesn't aesthetically translate to real-world objects as well as other series that are grounded in more...traditional wares, such as how Fallout uses its retro aspects and Assassin's Creed is more toned-down or historically based. What's annoying (and even that's a strong word for my feelings on the matter) is how they're just milking the game to death. Rather than make the thing that most people seemed to clamor for (Pip-Boy Editions), they're making a crapload of short-run items to try to make some weird market for superfans with a compulsion to build Fallout shrines. I don't mind that Halo isn't a massive cult.

But, by all means, if you're that big on Fallout, take your swings at Halo that are probably based in nothing close to reality. It won't hurt my enjoyment of Halo OR Fallout that you've got that genetic need to defend any criticism for your favorite series. I'm sure you're from the future and know how Halo 5 sells, so I'll just let you be right.

Yours truly,

Lil Frier
