Official Fall 2007 Dashaboard Update Now Up - XBLA Hits, Child Accts Graduate, DivX

Just checking in to make sure no one has said they are getting errors with the update or having it kill their 360. I cant wait to get home and test this out.
The update supports Divx, but does it support Xvid?
both are supported.

Okay, I've updated and it pretty much works as per the faq:
http://blogs.msdn.com/xboxteam/archive/2007/11/30/december-2007-video-playback-faq.aspx

I was first put off by the new "directional" navigation (a la Sony) and didn't see I needed to press X to switch video sources to navigate to videos that were off the machine fine.

I'm streaming from WMP11.

I tried some divx and xvid encodings and both worked fine (after it prompted me to download the "optional" playback update). Both were encoded at 480p and again they, played back fine. I fast forwarded for a bit in one and when I went to play the audio was garbled. I didn't have this problem on the other one. According to the faq fast-forwarding and rewind aren't supported (!) but I think this was just a glitch and if I kept futzing with pause/play/stop I'd have gotten what I wanted from it.

I also tried a "hr hdtv" settings encoding which is the max settings for XBMC (without choking the xbox 1) which is 540p. This also worked well and looked quite nice.

I finally tried a 720p but it was bundled in a MKV container, which is unsupported at present. PITA to move all my transcoded recordings away from MKV to M4P/MP4 but such is life.

So far this involves (according to doom9):
- Use mkvextract gui to bust open the container to get h264 video and ac-3 audio
- convert AC3 audio to AAC-LC (according to the xbox faq AAC-LC is supported); I'm using something called BeLight and BeSweet (?)
- Use Yamb to bundle the AAC audio and the h.264 video together in a M4P.

I'm almost done converting audio and crossing my fingers...

MPEG2/.TS (standard DVD/HD streams from ATSC antennae) are still unsupported without MCE.

A very good update to be sure, but I'm not ready to dissect the XBMC'd Xbox 1 just yet.
omg so awesome, now i can watch Top Gear on the big screen, woot woot
BBCA is running Season 8 of Top Gear, fwiw.
You can't even delete old demos, redownload them and delete them again to get rid of them. I got that from somewhere. I guess it's just best to startup all your real games to shove the demos to the bottom.
This works? I'll test it out when I get home from work. :)

He said "You can't" do that.

BTW, speaking of this, how does it work? I don't see any setting in the dash for this, so I'm worried to download any new XBLA trials.

I'm excited to try out the Xvid support but media sharing hasn't worked since I upgraded my motherboard and processor. I'm going to have to reinstall windows because I have tried everything else in the last 3 weeks to get it to work.

Try the following:

Uninstall Windows Media Connect 2.0 (if you have it installed)
Uninstall (roll-back) Windows Media Player 11
reboot
Install Windows Media Player 11
Configure sharing in WMP11
While in the configure sharing dialogue turn on your 360 and see if it shows up
If so, accept the device and you're 90% of the way there
If not, check the firewall settings on your PC

Then drag a WMV file to your WMP11 library (just for testing) and see if you can see it/play it from your 360

The update caused my 360 to freeze right before it finished restarting, but I had no problems when I turned it off and back on.

I really like the changes in this update, everything seems easier to access now, and the dashboard does seem to be faster.
question, which method should i format my portable HD so it can play nice with my 360?
Answering my own question, FAT32

I was thinking HFS+ or whatever the mac format is. FAT32 has a file limit of 4GB which is no good for HD files. The only problem is you need to use third party software to format your drive, but at least the 360 will be able to read it and you'll be able to avoid the size limit.
last crazy question. Didn't they say there was a way to filter out the gamer pics that weren't free? Themes even?
There is a Free section in marketplace that shows all the free items including gamerpics, themes, clips, I'm not sure if they count demos of games and xbla.

I hate the new set up.

Why didn't they just dump the "played games" tab and move the demos over there?

I don't like all of my arcade games and demos mixed up.
Can you not stream xvid/divx from Windows Media Center? The 360 is saying it doesn't recognize the file format.
This worked fine for me, but maybe something is wrong on your end? To be clear:

WMP11
DivX 5.0 or higher file
File extension: .avi
Not clear on the audio formats, but correction:AC3 is supported according to gizmondo...

I'm using the Media Center function on the 360, not WMP11. I know it's not the file, I burned it to a CD-RW to test and it worked fine on that.

I already don't like this friend of friend thing. Apparently you have NO WAY AT ALL of being hidden on your friend's list. Someone whom I didn't want knowing my tag was able to use a mutual friend to identify me. fuck you, MS.

Thanks for the help but I have done all that and then some, twice. I haven't found much help (after a new MB and CPU change) but I'm sure it has something to do with the DRM.

I do like how the blade comes out faster now, but, for me at least, it takes longer to log into Live and to just load the dashboard blades.

You can't stream divx from Media Center or the Zune software.

It sucks. I had to go back to WMP11, but I was happily surprised at how much videos I had that were supported.
Has anyone had any luck with HD xvid/divx?
The files I have are some Heroes episodes in xvid. They are in HD and work fine when running off a cd-rw. I'm still trying to get the streaming to work. I might have to try WMP11 since I'm not having any luck using Media Center.

I just did the update and now the marketplace, xbox live, and games tabs wont load at all. They just show the little 360 logo with the ring going around it. I am signed into live though and I can see my friends list and what not. Anyone have anything similar happen to them? I've already tried restarting the system and it didn't help.

ive used WMP11 to stream music to my 360, but when i select video under the media blade my PC doesnt show up. anyone have this problem? how did you guys get your videos to stream through WMP11?

That happened when I first updated, took about 30 seconds for them to load.

Now, it's instant.

Wow, most of my videos work and they look pretty fantastic. Excellent update.

Edit: But strangely, I can't get pictures to work... oh well.

Edit Edit: Nice avatar, zewone.

Sadly for me I just did the update and 10 minutes later I'm getting the RROD... not sure if i can blame the update or fantastic four. after doing the update i started f4 (first time playing this game) and my 360 froze on me. this happened a 2nd, 3rd and 4th time. after the fourth freeze it got the RROD when i powered it back on.

i'm hopeful if i let it sit it may boot back up, i've read other people being successful with this. we'll see... this is an original launch 360, so maybe it was just time! my wife will probably be happy, i'll be paying more attention to her for the next couple weeks.
Has anyone had any luck with HD xvid/divx?
As per my previous post, I can vouch for 540p (so-called hr hdtv) but haven't gotten a 720p or 1080i file working as of yet. My attempt to move a recorded, transcoded h.264 file from mkv container to m4p container was a rousing failure. The 360 just refuses to play the file - black screen, no message. It thinks it's playing just fine.

It's odd that MS should choose to not support the mkv container. It's a completely open standard with no licencing cost/implications... It is a bit more complex, but even just opening the container and ignoring a lot of the advanced functionality (subs, menus, etc) would be a welcome start...

Ah well, I can't really complain. I never even expected DivX support on the 360.
Is it possible to put a divx video on a flash drive and then play it on the 360?
Yes. It works with external drives (formatted FAT32) so it will work with flash (which are also formatted FAT32).

Before it launched, there was a way to disable it. I don't know about now, the page was removed. It makes me curious if they reset them all.
Why did MS decide to allow Divx with the reign of their downloable TV/movie service?
Maybe they're trying to give us what we want.
Ugh, I like the dashboard, but XBL seems to be being slammed right now. Seems so slow.
Yeah, I just came to check here if others were having problems. Stuff is moving really slow right now. I tried to download the Rock Band Black Sabbath pack and it couldn't even bring up the purchase screen and gave me an error code. Got it to work eventually but it took a few tries.

Also had a temp freeze about 20 minutes ago, but it went away after a minute.

I've enabled my iPod as a storage device (disk use). Is there a correct way dropping videos onto my iPod so my 360 will recognize my ipod as a portable device in the video subsection "[X button] Change video source"?

Edit: Nevermind
**39.Can I play videos from my iPod?
The Xbox 360 does not support playing videos from an iPod®.

wow i love this update!
the ability to upgrade and change your live account isnt a big deal to most of you im sure, but it was just what i wanted.

yea live is slow for me too. but this was expected, give it a day or two
