I'm a 3rd baseman in the Giants organization right now. Still at AA.
lol same here. 2nd season still at AA. Too many strike outs I guess.
I think RttS is totally busted for relievers--I wanted to play as a closer, but I've finally given up after having played 4 complete season, all of which I finished with good numbers (era around 2.50, 30 saves or so) but only managed to get enough points to bump my important stats up like 2 points and every year was offered a new contract as a AA closer. I assume this is just because they didn't calibrate the point values for relievers correctly, and that if I'd been a starting pitcher getting 5-7 innings every 4 days or a hitter playing every day I'd have enough points. But at least for relievers, this mode kind of stinks. Looked like fun, and I like a lot about it, but if I can't get my guy to the majors after 4 seasons of work, that's a problem. For now I'll just be playing my games in the CAG league and waiting for opening day rosters so I can start my Nationals franchise.
gamespot finally posted a review and one of the problems they wrote about was in the RTTS part of the game. They created a second baseman and had ridiculous stats but still kept getting told to be patient and that they would be called up eventually. They eventually lead the minors in almost all offensive statistical categories and had a batting average of over 400 but still could not get the call.

I created a starting pitcher and the only reason I finally got the call up was because of injury. When I first got called up they used me out of the pen and I could barely build up points pitching one inning here and there so I can see what you mean.

A month and a half into the second season of my CF here and I got called up into AAA. I was called up halfway through my first season to AAA as well. I had some ridiculous stats at the beginning of my 2nd season: .412 BA, 5 HR, 35 RBI, 10 SO through 250+ AB with around a .550 Slugging and around .500 OBP with 55 SB (15 CS).

Now I'm guessing I'm gonna struggle again with AAA pitching.

Another annoyance with the RttS: Getting called up to AAA is great, but not when you're called up to be a utility player. The number of Advancement Goals increase, yet the opportunities to gain points to up your player abilities and put up stat are minimized. It seems like they didn't balance the goals to your player role on the team, which, ultimately lead to failure at the AAA level.

I just loaded up my game after getting the call up to AAA last night and I only got 2 PH ABs in the first 4 games to try and satisfy no less than 6 Advancement Goals. WTF?!?

lol don't know what happened but my guy is on a tear right now. My last game went 3 for 6 with a Homer and double, with 7 RBIs. Avg is now .428, slugging .705. 2 Homers, 3 doubles, 15 hits, 13 RBIs all out of 35 At Bats. Wow.

This could be because of the team you are on. I played 2 seasons as a closer for the Mariners and never made it out of AA (made the all-star team and won the league title). Chose not to resign with them and then picked the Expos (because they had the lowest "skills" at closer in both AA and AAA). After training camp I was the closer in AA, and 3 weeks later I became the closer in AAA. I haven't played beyond that, but was relieved to see the difference switching teams made.

Strange. I'm finishing up my 1B's season with the Indians' AA team and noticed that the teams listed around the schedule and the RttS menus are different, as it's showing Toronto and its MiLB teams' logos, like I had been traded near the end of August. I'm still playing on the Akron Aeros (Indians' AA team), but this is freaking me out.

I'll admit I'm not a baseball savant and there's lots of little strategies I don't know that I learned through the game, but I'm wondering: Runners are allowed to tag up and advance on fly outs in foul territory?

Yes.

Nice. Finished my first season with my 1B in the Indians AA and got an offer to re-sign for a 2 year, $750k contract to be the AAA starter. Much better than the crap contract offers I got in MLB 07, making so much less than anyone comparable.

This game makes me want to go out and actually play baseball. I've learned some really interesting gameplay basics just listening to the commentary. This has to be the most time I've ever put into any sports game.

My RttS CF is crawling his way up. Finally got promoted to starter for the AAA team. So is progression based on all stats hitting a pre-determined level or only a few? I keep wanting to forego my bunting stats in favor of building up my other hitting categories but every Advancement Goal has me wasting it on bunting. I keep thinking advancement up a roster spot is based on 100% completion of your goals as well.
I keep thinking advancement up a roster spot is based on 100% completion of your goals as well.
I've been called up, mostly because I've completed usually at least 75% of the goals/had great #s.
I've been called up, mostly because I've completed usually at least 75% of the goals/had great #s.
Good to know. I'm going to completely ignore the bunting stats. I've yet to use it in a game.

Well, I simmed the rest of my 1st season, I was a starting SS on my AAA team. Then, in the off-season I get released....however, it lets me pick my team again, so I pick Detroit AGAIN and they offer me a contract to be a AAA backup. I take it and I'm now a starting DH due to injury....I enjoy that though, it goes faster. I've only played about half the game as I find some of it tedious.

I got called up to the majors at the end of August of my first season on KC.

Started off in AA and hit well. About .370 with 6 hrs through May. Didn't really hit my goals most of the time. Then I got called up to AAA because the LF in AAA had a 6 month injury. I didn't do much in AAA but never got sent back down. Ended up just simming most of it because I was very rarely playing. Then I got the call to the majors.

I made a LF/RF and for what it's worth it says KC is thin at those positions on all levels.

Also, what is the point of fielding (aside from playing all the plays your person is involved in)? Is there any way to get points from it?

Not playing RTTS, but I just love the attention to detail in the game.

So, I'm up 10-3, playing the bottom of the eight, and accidentally (my 3 year old came to ask for something) I pressed the steal button with Manny on base. So, Manny goes ahead and successfully steals 2nd base. The 3rd base coach goes berserk, and practically comes out of his cleats 'cause he's so pissed. The announcer immediately brings up that I shouldn't be showing off the other team.

Unfortunately that was a bit overshadowed by the fact that my reliever was awarded a save when he came in well after I was up by many more than 3 runs. Oh well.

How many innings did he pitch? I think if you pitch a certain amount of innings it doesn't matter how many runs you are up.

I'm into my third season as a starting pitcher in the Cubs organization. I've been promoted to the ace of the staff after posting a 10-6 record with a 2.24 ERA the season before. Man the Cubs have a horrible bullpen and offense. I got no run support and several games where I had the lead the pen got rocked in the 8th and 9th giving me a no decision. I pitched the opening game of the third season as the ace and took a loss after giving up one run in 8 innings because my guys got shut out! A lack of run support really blows!

One thing I've noticed while playing is you get a bunch of RTTS points if you make the all-star team and if you play in the playoffs everything you do is worth double.
How many innings did he pitch? I think if you pitch a certain amount of innings it doesn't matter how many runs you are up.
Correct, you can get a save for 3+ innings pitched (to clost the game) regardless of the score.

This game is really starting to annoy me

I hit a home run at Wrigley Field with the Cubs, and there outfielder jumped up, stuck his hand threw the cage, caught it, and they called him out.

You can slide, roll, etc into second base and it never affects the dude throwing for the double play. Once my guy rolled right through the dude.

and my runners are always taking off in spots, people who would never steal. Like my pitcher. They also try to steal home

The play of the outfielders annoys me. As a pitcher there have been several innings I should have gotten out of but were extended because of "lollypop" throws while turning a double play or bad throws in the field. Another thing I've noticed is how many routine plays my infield misses with the Cubs because of delays in the animation. I've had my SS just stand there while a weakly hit ball drops over his head. Either that or he jumps way too late and misses it.

Now that is some BS! I was pitching a no hitter for the Cubs against the Rockies. I finished up the 8th inning, I was allowed to bat in my spot to lead off in the bottom of the eight inning but then was PULLED FOR THE CLOSER BEFORE THE START OF THE NINTH!!!!:bomb::bomb::bomb::bomb::bomb::bomb:

I didn't even get a chance at finishing off the no hitter!

My pitcher's doing well at the end of the season. Was 11-6 in AA when I got called up to AAA for two games, which I went 1-0 with a 0.64 ERA before being called up to the Angels rotation in the #5 spot. Won my first pro game against the White Sox, though they kept me in until my pitcher could've passed out when he finished the 8th inning. At least I have a shot at the playoffs now if I don't screw up these last few starts of the season. I like that my pay gets bumped up when I move up during the season, so my 35k salary is now 390k for the last few starts.

Edit: Oh yeah, Todd Zuniga reviewed the PSP version and gave it an A-. GameSpot also has a player comparison feature up between MLB 08, MLB 2K8, and The Bigs here.

I bitched out my manager for pulling me in the 6th inning of a game where I had a shutout going and only allowed a couple hits. He told me I was right, I could've probably gone a few more innings, and he'd leave me in longer next time. For some reason in my next start I just didn't have my best stuff (could not spot my pitches worth a crap). I got hit around but escaped damage in the first 4 innings. Finally in the 5th I was gassed. I allowed a couple runs but I guess the manager decided to stick with his promise to leave me in. He let me get so low on energy that I had no control over my pitches and I got hammered for 8 earned runs before he decided to go to the pen.

Wooohooo! Finally made it to the big leagues. Shortstop for the Cubs with the awesome number of 13 with a scorching BA of .144.

I'm reading through the thread, but someone tell me this:

07 is down to $15 at Target. Is 08 worth the $45 upgrade price? New to PS3, that could be another game.

I'd also like to know if it was possible to update the 07 rosters to 08.

The 1 thing I would change about this game is the base running stuff. Way to easy to steal 2nd base and man do I hate sitting around waiting for someone to actually put the ball in play. I would love to just steal second base and then skip to my next appearance. If this is a possibility someone let me know.

The PS3 MLB 07? I would say it's worth the upgrade since 07's buggy and rather underwhelming graphically.

Have those of you with problem with the gameplay tried downloading sliders to see if those help with your issues?

Ugh, I was hoping you would say otherwise.

I have enough money to buy one game for the immediate future, so it's either going to be this or Ratchet.

Buy MLB plus Ratchet 1,2 and 3. You'll save money but be playing the exact same Ratchet game each time .
Well, this will last a good long while, so you'll definitely get $60 out of this game.
Indeed. I don't like baseball games, but this doesn't leave my PS3. I don't know how many hours I've logged, but I'm into season 4 of my RttS guy.

I love this game but some of the goals and results drive me insane.

First, no manager would EVER set a goal of striking someone out. Secondly with this goal, if a guy still gets out you lose points. Ridiculous.

2nd, it annoys me that if you are told to induce a groundball but the person hits a groundball down the line for a double, you still get points.

So the strike out goal you still lose points even though you get the out, and on another goal you gain points even though the person gets a hit off you.

I didn't play 07, but I think the goals have always had these little quirks about them. You would think by now there would just be some way to eliminate the goals and just base it off your general performance.

Does it really matter if you strike the guy out or get a pop up to 3rd base? Im sure there are other goals in there like this but those are the 2 I remember that annoy me a bit.

Anyways, Great Game. Go buy it.

I started a season with the Cubs, but can't hit crap with Aramis...

Dude is hitting like .173, every time he flys or grounds out it seems...

Everyone else is doing great

RTTS question:

I can't seem to hit for power to save my life. I'm hitting .500 through the first week, but the best ball I've hit was off the wall for a double.

Ideas?

fucking awesome game, though. Best baseball game I've ever played.

The goal is to induce a groundball. Do you see anything in that goal that says "get out" anywhere? The goal is what it is. You still get positive points because you can't induce the ground ball AND field it/throw him out. Read what the goals say and you will be less disappointed with the results.

The goal for strikeout, although unrealistic, it still achieves what it's set out to achieve. With the strikeout goal you either strike them out or you didn't.

Yes, they can be quirky. But they are a hell of a lot better than in 07.

I'm playing Rookie mode, so no square.

Finally figured out that once the blue bar fills up, it increases the yellow bars. Thought I was overdoing training.

Hit a bit of a slump and am down to .380. But I did hit my first home run of the spring, a game-tying shot in the 8th.

Never thought I'd be playing this and not season mode.

So "inducing a groundball" that goes down the line for a double gets you points, yet getting someone to pop out on 1 pitch instead of wasting 3+ pitches striking someone out doesn't. That isn't "quirky" it is stupid. Who cares if you induce a ground ball that turns into a 2nd and 3rd situation with 0 outs. That's not a positive.

Yes, I understand what the goals are, it just makes no sense and is completely unrealistic.

Why the hell would a manager be happy you "induced a groundball" if it turned into a double?

They should be aiming for realism. Asking someone to strike someone out and then penalizing them for a 1 pitch pop out is just ridiculous.

In my opinion, the 1 thing they could really do to improve this game is get rid of the goal system as it is. You would think they could make a system where an induced groundball for a double would give you negative to 0 points while an induced groundball into a double play would give you max. points. Doesn't seem to complicated.

If there is a runner on 2nd with 0 outs and you stop the hitter from moving the guy to 3rd, you should get points. That goal doesn't need to be stated. The common sense positive results should be just worked into the game without needing to state certain goals.

Man, it can be hard to get called up. Some of the advancement goals they have are stupid.

'Increase bunting to xxx' OK, when am I supposed to be bunting when everytime I come up to the plate, they want me to Hit & run?

'Increase CONTACT against LHP' - fine, except there are like four LHP in AA.

Unless of course they mean in training, then I'm a total idiot.

Anyways, .380, 7HR and 24RBI through mid-May thus far. Creaming what the AAA guy is doing.

OK. It's not that clear whether they want you to boost your statistics or attributes. If I had known that earlier, I probably would have been called up by now.

:bomb:

If it's a stat goal, it'll give you the number you're supposed to reach.

You don't get called up just for completing goals, you have to build your player up a bit first.
