Official MLB 08: The Show Thread - IGN: 8.7, GS: 8.5, 1up: B- - Out Now!

Ugh. Second straight time they told me I needed more time in AA. I'm hitting .420 with 16 HRs and 55 RBI, with 27 steals going into the All-Star game.

It's just rather annoying, considering both the AAA guys are hitting .270 with 3 HRs and 10 RBI. It's also rather annoying to see my scouting report move up so slowly.

Two questions.

This game supports 1080p my tv only supports 1080i, but the game plays in 720p. How do I make it play 1080i?

Also, I went to the website to enter the free cap code, but the website doesn't do anything it just loads.
Since I bought the game used I thought it might be that someone redeem the code already, but I then entered some made up number and still nothing happens. Its just there with the red bars loading with nothing happening. Any help?

The main reason's because of your attributes. If they call you up, you will probably get slaughtered.

Man, I've lost my last two starts with the Cubs because I'm getting no run support. They've scored a total of one run for me in those two starts. I've started boosting my hitting so maybe I can knock in a few runs myself.

I could see that if it was earlier in the season, but I've poured a ton of points into my hitting and fielding.

What the hell? I just fired up MLB 08 and I can't get past the title screen. When I turn the game on I can get to the title screen (with Ryan Howard where it says "PRESS START"). When I hit start I hear the crack of the bat sound but the screen never changes. The music tracks and MLB radio things keep playing but it never goes to the game selection menu so I can start playing. I've tried rebooting the system but it keeps doing the same thing.

Is anyone else having problems?

EDIT: I wonder if the hangup has something to do with problems on the MLB 08 servers.... Just a minute ago my PS3 had an internet error where I had that screen come up saying I was kicked off line. Then my router froze then rebooted.
Try logging out of PSN first, it just may be a connection issue that's clogging things up.
Thanks Frisky. That was the problem. As soon as I signed out I was able to get into the game with no issues.

I am absolutely on :hot: in AAA. I actually went through a mini-slump before my last few games and I'm hitting .480 with 7 HRs and 23 RBIs in 20 games (maybe less, I don't remember). I might not get called up this round, but I'm putting the pressure on, I can feel it. It certainly won't take a year to make the next jump.

I just picked this game up yesterday, am pretty excited to get started on it. I do miss the old days when EA would put out a baseball game.

Cubs are in the World Series!!!!

Anyone have any success with asking for a position change? I started as a CF and they acquired another CF so the depth is now listed as "adequate" and I want to move to shortstop where it's "thin". I keep asking for a change, but they say I'm too "sure-handed" or "valuable" in the position to move. It's just so damn boring in center field. Do I just keep harassing them (even though I've asked at least 5 times already) or am I gonna have to purposely fuck up some fielding routines for them to consider moving me?

CUBS WIN THE WORLD SERIES!!!! CUBS WIN THE WORLD SERIES!!!!

Holy shit! It nearly falls like the real thing. My rookie year with the club and I tear it up in the series as a CF/DH that goes to 7 games against Detroit.

BA .444
AB 28
H 12
HR 2
RBI 7
SB 5

fucking awesome!

I just picked this up today along with GTA4 -- I am really excited about getting into this and playing a few games online. My PS3 name is listed under my avatar if you would like to add me.

And Matty V is the announcer for the Padres, so it will be like watching a Padres game for me which is a nice bonus!

I have finally got back into PS3 after my 360 RRoD'ing the other day so I ended up picking up GTA4 for PS3. I fired up the MLB 08 demo and wow. This game puts MLB 2k8 to shame. I'm picking it up this weekend.

Gotta love some of these goofy goals. The other day when I was playing the manager asked me to drop down a sac bunt (of course that almost always happens with runners on since I'm a pitcher, even though I am hitting about .350). I drop down a beauty of a bunt up the 3rd base line. The 3rd baseman tried to make a bare handed play and whiffs on the ball. The catcher quickly picks up the ball about a second later. For some reason the runner passes second and gets tagged out in a run-down between 2nd and 3rd. I get a -5 FAILED on the goal because the runner screwed up. How fucked up is that?

EDIT: Today I had Pinella ask me to execute the suicide squeeze for the first time. Worked like a charm agaist Dusty Baker and the Reds.

Holy crap. I was plugging along in my second season as an SP for the Angels' AAA team just before the All-Star break before I see the Angels making a trade one day for a SS, then I get traded to the Mets for RP Jorge Sosa. I'm surprised since the Angels were supposed to be lacking in depth at SP, but I guess they had enough to give me away for a reliever.

Been doing well otherwise, with the exception of an injury that sidelined me after my first start of the season. 4-2, 2.67 ERA, sub 1 WHIP, 47 K's, and moving up quickly for a spot in the Futures game. I think I'll use the points from a game to add a new pitch soon, though I'm not sure what.

Just got this and started a RttS as an outfielder for the home team Indians (picked RF, but should have went LF). I find that I'm struggling to hit in the upper .200s even on rookie mode, but I guess it's realistic that you're not going to produce every at-bat.

I think it's good that when I'm told to not strike out or get on base that I actually get more nervous since it adds intensity into the game, but I hate when I'm hitting like 3-4 in a game and they tell me to get on base and it seems so much harder. I'll have to check a batting guide or something since I'm struggling so much.

Also, I'm not finding it so easy to steal bases as everyone else. I'm upping my speed stat (to help chase down balls as well) but is there a good technique to use?

I really think my RTTS character is screwed.

I'm hitting .480 through 200 ABs in AAA, better than I was in AA for this and last season. It's not yet the AS break. I also have 16HRs and 61 RBIs. If I had enough ABs, I'd be leading the league in several offensive categories. The guy that keeps getting recalled and demoted hits well below me in all areas, and isn't as good defensively. I've met all of my goals for a year. The MLB starter just got a 4-year contract. I can't change positions, and can't get traded.

I have no idea what to do, except for possibly retiring and starting a new character.

I'm getting slightly better the more I play. I broke my 16 game hitting streak last night, but stats are up around the board. The coach won't let me switch from RF to LF either since I'm too valuable at that position and it's pissing me off because I'm not the starter.

Will I be stuck in AA until I meet the advancement goals? Taking 16 BB is just not going to happen with the way I play.

The walks are almost impossible to attain. And you could attain every advancement goal for a season and not get called up.

It's frustrating. I'll attempt to make it to my next goal period tonight. I better get a legitimate look.

A glimmer of hope!

After going through yet another two goal periods of not getting the call, I decided to sim through to the end of the season, making sure I met my RPG goals. I got called up due to a catcher injury a week before the season was over, and didn't even bother with the goals then. I got released, then offered a 4-year contract to be the MLB starter!

That gives me a lot of hope. Since I know I can do better than the sim, I reverted back to the save I have and hopefully will finish the season in a few days.

I think I'm getting better. Everytime I start the game up I have to have a few games go by before I'm back in the hitting zone. MFer still won't let me switch to LF, but my league rank is 1/48 and my organization rank went up to 4/7 and my competition is the AAA teammates.
Maybe something good will start happening.

On a side note, the hit and runs are driving me crazy and there was a game I was going 3 for 3 with a homerun and I got a goal along the lines of, "I know you're 3 for 3 but I wanna see more out of you..." lol. Pressure is always on in those goal at bats.

I made a SP pitcher in RTTS mode and I need to get a 5th pitch to work with. I currently have for 4 of these pitches and trying to be a power pitcher:

4-seam fastball
Slider
Sinker
Cutter

Should I go for a 12-6 curve or different pitch to play against left-hand batters?

I put in three hours into RttS this morning and I have to say that I haven't been this pissed/frustrated at a game since learning how to play Tiger Woods. I hit over .300 well into May, and as it segues into June I drop to mid .200s. Apparently I go from hitting doubles and shallow outfield hits consistently to popping out and hitting into DPs constantly.

fuck this piece of fucking shit game. I fucking hate it right now. If I was using my sixaxis and not my DS3 I swear I would have thrown that fucker into the wall a dozen times by now. fuck.

lol.. anger issues aside, I took a break and went to the batting cages for a couple swings. Felt good to crush some balls.. but now I'm scared that if I pick this game up and continue slumping I'm not going to want to play it much again.

I just saw they have this game at my local Gamestop in stock used. Their used PS3 games are always in excellent condition and I have the edge card to take off 10%.

Hmmmmmmmmm.

That's odd. I'm hitting .451 and I feel I suck. Are you using the right stick to influence your swing? Are you constantly investing points into your contact and power categories?

I just picked this game up last week, and it rocks, but I'm having a lot of trouble hitting home runs in RTTS. I'm playing second base, and my average is good (around .350 in mid-May), but I've only hit 3 home runs, all pretty recently. Is there a trick to this? Do I just need to pump more points into power? Or am I just impatient :)?

Power points, influence the swing, and don't try to hit certain pitches into the bleachers.

You'll start to notice what kind of pitches are best, what location is best, and how early/late to swing.

Most of my HRs go opposite field, because I purposely swing late on outside and high pitches. It takes a little bit of practice.

BTW, I believe my stats in my first year of AAA are this:
.451 avg, 21HR, 97RBI, 53SB(13CS), 21BB, 6SO

Nice line . I've had trouble drawing walks, but if you can hit .451 it doesn't hurt!

I just have a hard time with plate discipline. There's a few stats I've been trying to power up and then I'm making sure to take care of anything that is decreasing. I'll make sure to focus on the hitting categories from now on though.

I got back into it last night and my hitting got significantly better, but since I didn't pay attention to the advancement goals my douchebag coach benched me. Fortunately, due to injury I was called up to AAA in the middle of August. Then I thought the season was over and now I'm called up to MLB due to injury again at the end of September. I'll have to see what happens from here since that was about the time my g/f got home from work and what concentration I do have when it comes to hitting goes out the window when talking to her, so I just quit.

Hopefully the Indians will be in the playoffs.. I see that Carmona is a Cy Young candidate and Hafner is up there for some award too, so there's a chance.

i use to be pretty bad at plate discipline but than i just didn't swing if it didn't come in my guess pitch area.

I have a question, how do i go about challenging someone on my friends list?

I got this game today. Online sucks. When I pitch I keep pressing X to get rid of the 10,000 replays after any single event that happens then I'm automatically pitching a fastball and the opponent always picks fastball.

My pitcher for the Marlins in RttS is really good. 6'4, 220 LB, his name is Joe Thornton (I did that on purpose, it sounds cool), and he throws a 4 seam FB, a 12-6 CB, and a slider. He just pitched his 5th game in spring training against the Yankees. Stat line was 5 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 5 K. (Struck out Jeter, Cano, Giambi twice, and Molina)

I'm really confused; for spring training do I play on the MLB team then I go down to AA for the season and the Marlins call me up to AAA and the MLB as needed?

Awesome! I've been doing well as a starter for the Cubs but I've been horrible at the plate. I've even spent a bunch of points improving my hitting stats to become more of a Big Z type pitcher. I was hitting .093 until tonight when I cracked a grand slam!

Question.

I downloaded the rosters (I think it's the offical ones) and have been playing a franchise as the Cubs.. However this last time I played the Pirates (I'm in the middle of May) they had someone on their team named Carlo Delgado.. (yes, with the "s")

Has this happened to anyone before?

Trade? Maybe a prospect that got called up just has the same name?

sorry, i ment without the S..

Carlo"s" Delgado is still on the Mets

just thought it was weird that the names were so similar

I took on the Rangers in franchise. I traded for Ryan Zimmerman to play 3rd and I also traded for Matt Cain to be my ace pitcher. The 2009 season is going good so far I think I'm 2nd in the West. I'm probably going to look for another ace to pair with Cain in the off-season. I'll admit I edited Josh Hamilton a bit, I didn't max out his power or anything but I cranked it up a bit and I also gave him a better throwing arm.

I'm thinking about trading for Zumaya and converting him to a closer. But in terms of pairing another ace to go along with Cain and Millwood anyone have any ideas?

I try not to trade for players that other teams really wouldn't give up. Cain is sort of on the block right now and the Nats are 17.5 games out of 1st and I still have both the Giants and Nats really good deals too.

Any ideas on a young ace? I'm thinking Phillip Hughes or Ian Kennedy.

This is the first baseball game that I like since MVP 2005 and I like it better than MVP 2005. I played all games in the first season in the AA league as a Whitesox catcher so I could earn more points to upgrade my stats. Everything in this game is fantastic, except for the dumbass, unrealistic manager AI. I met all my advancement goals in the entire seasons and yet they refused to promote me to the upper leagues multiple times. Compare to the catcher in the AAA and MLB in the Whitesox, my performance was more impressive than theirs. At the All-Star game, I already hit 50HRs but still no dice. At the end of the first season, I cracked 75 HRs and produced 202 RBIs and stole 53 times. And they still didn't want to promote me to the big league. I hope they fixed this bug next year because otherwise, I will sim the game until I get promoted to MLB.

I hope they improve the call-up/send-down system for MLB 09. I just completed my 5th season pitching for the Cubs. I had an ERA under 2, over 200 K's, very few walks, an 18-3 record (I had numerous no decisions due to poor bullpen and lack of run support), I won the NL Cy Young, and we won the World Series. As soon as the season ended they sent me down to the fucking minors!!!!

When I started the next season I had to make a couple starts for the Iowa Cubs before I got the call back to the majors.
