CAGiversary!

I searched and didn't see a thread for this. I figured I would make one since the phone comes out Saturday. I plan on getting two or three of them for my lines. Any other CAG's getting one?

For those that don't know, it's a new phone made by Palm that is being driven by Jon Rubenstein, former Apple exec that is credited for the success of the iPod. It was created by several former Apple employees and many say it is what a new iPhone would be if Apple were to start from scratch.

The pone is the first phone to use the new, built from scratch, WebOS, based on linux.

You're so sure of it you're getting it for multiple lines at once?

I'm excited to see what it can do, but it will take more to part me from my iphone.

It looks like a promising phone and would gladly get it but 1)not out of contract 2) Sprint won't allow Sero Accounts to get it. I do hope it does bring back Palm to good reputation though.

So I ended up getting 3 of these like I said I would. It is awesome. Very awesome.

It certainly is 1.0 but OTA updates are being released adding things all the time. It does far more than the iphone did at it's launch. WebOS is incredible - running multiple apps and switching between them with such ease is revolutionary.

The web browser is better/faster than iphone too.

The phone itself feels so nice in your hand and pocket it makes the iphone look like an antiquated brick.

The only real advantage the iphone has over it is the app selection. But at least the pre launched with an app store - and there have been several app's added daily.

The internet is blazing fast on sprint as well. It takes about a day to get use to the gestures, UI flow, and keyboard, but then its a snap. My only complaint is that I drain the battery pretty fast as much as I play with it. But if it that became too much of an issue, at least it's a battery I can easily replace.

So in summary, been running close to a week now and am very happy. My wife loves hers too, I've never seen her play with a phone so much.

I am not ashamed to admit my hate for all electronics with fruit symbols. Ever since I got a job at a company that exclusively uses macs and tries to give me an iphone, its easy.
But its frustrating to know that even if a device like the pre is created by those that helped make apple successful, and it kicks ass - it doesn't really stand much of a chance without that fruit logo.

That isnt true. If the device is truely better then It will stand on its own merits. Fact of the matter is that the Palm Pre is a fantastic phone with tons of features but as a whole package it just isnt better than the iphone. Im not saying it is less of a gadget, it just isnt better enough for the masses to take notice. Before the iPhone there was nothing really like it as a whole on the market. In order for something else to come up and take the crown it will have to be leaps and bounds over the iphone like the iphone was over what was out there when it came out.

P.S. I am not a fan of Apple by any means. But I can't deny how damn good some of their products are.

We'll see what I can do then !!!!

um, but what they said is pretty much true. Faster web browser and network, more functionality than iPhone at its release (a few years ago), a lesser app store, and nicer form factor (did make the iPhone feel like a brick). Doubt that there will be an iPhone killer anytime soon since it has a large user base, but this is the first phone built well enough that it is in its league. Nice to have options... Great phone & look forward to its future development.

i know a lot of people with iphones, a very small percentage of them use macs.. i really think you're overestimating the mass market brand appeal of apple. there are definitely fanboys that'll buy anything apple, but that's true of any brand in any market. the iphone is legitimately one of the best phones around, arguably still the best.

and i dont think you'll ever see the sort of app development for the pre like there is for the iphone.. pre is all web-based stuff. writing a pre app is like writing a web applet. i feel like coding an applet is too soft, like it's not really a program, feels more like a plug-in.. for me, at least, coding in obj-c feels much more solid, like i'm writing a stand-alone program, which is far more familiar and comfortable for novices like me (and a ton of iphone apps were made by novices like me).

Not really. Brand hype can kill off better products.

For instance, look at the iPod. Before the Touch, I don't think there was much of a case for any of the other ipods being the best mp3 player out there.

Not when stuff like the Creative Vision M had fm tuning, recording, a better screen, better sound quality (from reviews) etc. etc.

But the iPod still murdered every thing else out there, despite doing less and costing more.

I'm one of those that doesn't like getting raped in the ass so, ANY of these "smart" phones are pretty worthless. All the c phone companies can kiss my yellow ass too.

My contract with Tmobile ends in October. We'll see what I can do then.[/QUOTE]
You can use an iPhone with Tmobile fwiw.

The people that lined up in June of 07 for the iphone launch that set record numbers were almost entirely Apple fans.

The iphone didn't do anything out of the box that any other phone hadn't already been doing for years. In fact, it did a lot less. But it did look really pretty and had a real neat user experience.

Um. First of all you need to remember there was no 'app store' or dev kit for the iphone for nearly a year after it's launch. Not without hacking it. Absolutely no official third party support from Apple for development for 7 months.

Second of all, for many months after the iphone's launch, they did the exact same thing - they tried to sell "web apps". It was a while before any "novice", like yourself, could code directly to hardware.

So what makes you think anything is different for Palm? The Pre had an app catalog at launch AND an open dev kit within a month of it's release. They are doing exactly what Apple did for the iphone launch, but faster, so why knock them?

Name one third party app that launched within a month of the iphone that was NOT a 'web app'.

It's damn smart to push the web apps at first. You instantly have zillions of developers that can jump right in. That's why Apple did it first too.

See what this guy has gotten it to do in just a couple weeks?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUeHEFlPa6E&feature=player_embedded

.....Interestingly, he reports that the performance on the Pre is actually better than that of the iPhone 3GS

Do you really honestly believe Palm intends to only use web apps on a phone forever with Processing power better than the 3GS? Really???

No - they have a low level SDK they have already let some developers have early access to they plan to release late summer to everyone else. On top of that, they have "leaked" the ability to root the Pre already and people are already hacking the hell out of it, proving that Palm intends to be far more open to the mod community than Apple - who doesn't like that?

I really don't get the double standard. The Pre was created almost entirely by former Apple employees, lead by the same Apple executive that made the ipod a household name. It stand to reason that if Apple had started over to make a new iphone, it would be very much like the Pre - yet it can't cut a break because it's missing the fruit on the back.

Edit - As a side note, my boss called me over to his desk 2 days ago and said "you've been here long enough that we normally would give you your iphone by now, but I understand you don't want one?" I said "that's true". So he said "Well I'll talk to the CFO about subsidizing your plan on the Pre then, if you use it for your work phone."
