CAGiversary!
Feedback

So like the last thread I started about the weather, it got pretty decent feedback.

Between the Weather and the News channel, I was more excited then the Weather then the news. I am curious how it'll be set up and all that good stuff.

The supposed date is January 27, which is still a good 3 weeks away. We came up with some clever ideas in the Weather thread about how the use of the weather could be implemented in some games. Could the news? I liked CheapyD's response to my CAGBag question in that 1 CAGCast about playing a sports game and your local news is on a ticker. That'd be fun.

So.. go ahead and post anything here about the Wii News Channel. I can't see this thread blowing up because the weather is always more interesting then the news ^_^

I'm just more excited to FINALLY have a "complete" Wii Channel set up. Now we need to the full internet, and we'll be fine.

Go ahead. Discuss.

EDIT: As of 1/26/07, at 5:39am EST.. (aka the time it is right now) the Wii News Channel is available. Who knows when it came out, but it was probably not to long ago since I didn't get a message from Nintendo like I did about the weather channel.

I'm looking forward to trying this one. I hardly ever use the Weather channel, though...not because I don't WANT to, I LOVE the interface. It's just that the damn thing always shows like the 6AM weather reports for me. I don't know if there's a manual way to update every listing, but the thing is WAY too out of date for current conditions to do much at all for me.

So that said, I hope News is different and more up to date, generally. If so, I'm sure I'll get plenty of use out of it.

The news channel certainly interests me more than the Weather Channel. I'm really just hoping for lots of customization on the headlines and whatever it grabs.

And I hope whoever is providing the news does a better job of providing it than weathernews has been with the weather.

Take the sports thing a step further. In all simulated games, the game pulls the real boxscore from the internet and updates your game with it. That would be freaking awesome. Have a mode called "real season" mode. You play your game on the actual date it's supposed to be played and then the system grabs the boxscore from the news. Granted, they could do this now without the News channel.

EA Sports is already doing this on the 360. NBA Live 07 has an ESPN mode that streams ESPN Radio through the internet - within the game. And, as you're setting up the game, the sports scores are shown in a ticker at the bottom.

I LOVE the weather channel. I love the interface. And my wife actually uses it cos her family lives in Turkey, and now when she calls them they are amazed cos she knows the current weather conditions there, lol.

I hope the news channel is customizable. Like you let it know what types of news your interested in, politics, local, sports, world news, etc. You could input your zipcode and get local news, or input your favorite sports teams to get their news. Sooo many possibilities! =D

I look forward to hearing about things very late, in the same way the weather channel works. First thing you will see on the news channel is breaking news about Sadam's Trail to be followed by his death. I cant wait.

I'm wondering if the news is going to be "filtered." With Nintendo's heavy-handed approach to keeping youngsters "safe," are they just going to allow news about killings, war, etc., to freely come to the Wii? Maybe the News channel will have parental control.

Personally I am not too interested in this channel because I give a rats ass about news, cool to have, but I will hardly use it due to I hate the news (well not hate but doesn't watch it). Now if we could switch it to tech news, thats a whole nother story.

That's the thing.. we really don't know what they will offer. I would love to set it up that it grabs certain types of news, rather then whatever is happening in my area.

at first i was somewhat interested in the weather/news/web browser, but after getting 2/3rds of them and playing around with them briefly, I have no reason to use them

I too wonder what it will offer that CNN.com or any other news site doesn't.

I'd like local news.

However, I expect to use this channel once, and only once.
Just like the Weather Channel.

Mario and Princess Peach will be the co-anchors.

The thing is, I can already get the weather and news on the web browser and at least concerning the weather, it's much better at it. If Nintendo wants to impress me with their news channel then I think I'm going to need to see streaming video and audio or maybe a cgi Mario reading my local news to me.
Mario and Princess Peach will be the co-anchors.
If they electronically read the news to me, I'd use it everyday.

Now here's Toad with the weather...

I like all these different Channel ideas. Its like between games when I'm bout to do something else I'd check the weather real quick cause its right there. I even check CAG sometimes before I sleep and maybe a deal till make me get up and run to the actual computer. What if the news channel could somehow integrate into the whole system, to the point where if there was an emergency or something a headline would scroll atop whatever game you were playing. The channels arent really something you need, pretty much just convenient little tools should you choose to use them. Weather kicks ass. I'd kill for a traffic report channel. That should be included with the news actually.

I hope the interface is intuitive, the few screens they released from a while ago didn't look all that great.

I would enjoy it if they incorporated News into games like Animal Crossing so they can talk about recent events. That way, my neighbor Tangy the Cat can cheerfully tell me how 52 people were killed in a suicide bombing. Then I can check the weather, get news, and pick weeds all at once.
What's the feed that they're using for the news again? CNN right?
I thought it was the associated press for some reason.

The only issue with the weather channel.. is that it's usually 8 hours behind :(
The only issue with the weather channel.. is that it's usually 8 hours behind :(
Yeah that really annoys me too, and is my only problem with the channel, but hey for just an idea of what to expect today is pretty cool.
One more week to go, any news on this?
Oh what a delicious pun this is!

Kinda.

Sorta.

....

Not really.

But still. :)
News...on my Wii! So exciting....Just like the useless Weather feature!
I KNOW HOW EXCITING?!?!

..Sigh.

Well props to Nintendo for at least trying, LOL

To be fair to the Forecast Channel, I love the interface and WOULD use it regularly to get a general idea of the current conditions if they were not ALWAYS so out of date. I keep WC24 on 24/7, but I always get 6AM conditions even at like 4PM.

It's great to get a look at the conditions around the world, though - even when they're out of date. Sure, you can do it on the PC more efficiently, but shouldn't we appreciate the cool presentation and tiny bit of fun it injects into the weather checking process?

Hopefully the News Channel will update more frequently and/or have a manual update button.

I agree veyr much! If the weather channel was up to date then I'd probably look at it more! But when if it's Saturday night and I'm going out..what's the weather going to be?!.. Oh, it's going to be 65!! woo hoo!!...oh wait, that was 6pm YESTERDAY!

^ we need not for that to happen. It's a shame, the weather channel could be a much better feature.

Hopefully the news, as kinda stupid as it is (LOL), is more up to date. If we log onto our news channel for the first time and one of the headlines is "OJ SIMPSON INNOCENT!" i'm selling my Wii.

I'd much rather have a Wii insider channel with game videos, release dates, hands on reviews, walkthroughs, cheats, and DEMOS. This would be much more valuable to me than news, which can be gotten from the website of my choice using the browser.

I'm just hoping Nintendo doesn't abandon the Channels, I can't really imagine what else they would release after the News Channel.

Whatever happened to !!M?

How about a DS download channel ?

A game lobby channel would be nice as well, whenever they decide to start making online games.

News channel just seems redundant, unless it were to be a Wii news channel.

There is so much possibility for these channels. Music, messaging, Mii upgrades, demos, ds demos, wii bloging, etc. But do I see any of that in the future, not too much no. Prove me wrong Nintendo, prove me wrong.
The news channell actualy gets news from 12 hours in the future, according to IGN.
Shit. The Terminator is totally gonna use that to find Sarah Connor.

How do you ignore all threads until someone makes a joke and you jump in and expand on it?

HAHA!

i tend to wonder if they'll package in some other updates along with the news. perhaps making the weather channel better, etc.

Well, we have about 4 days left.

I'm more excited to have a complete set of channels.
HOPEFULLY this is interesting--generally speaking.

Reading articles on the net about this coming the 27th and its just making me thing how fucking useless the weather channel is right now being hours off and not having the current time listed on the thumbnail in the menu system. I am really surprised that this isn’t fixed yet as well as them not offering more cities.

I hope they do a bang-up job on this news channel because IMO right now the VC, the web browser and the weather channel are all laughable. I use none of them. None of these are reasons to buy or not buy the system. But if they were done right they could be real plusses and may even slide into being very important when considering purchasing a system or even keeping your existing system now that you finished Zelda, the only game worth owning on the system for now and the foreseeable future. My system will only have GC games in it for the next few months till the next first party hit comes out; whenever that might be.

I find the VC and the Browser to be excellent.
I don't care about the weather, I can't do anything about it anyway..

This is interesting...According to Kotaku, and the AP story below (and they should know, since they're the ones supplying the news for the News Channel), the channel will use a map system similar (identical?) to the Wii Weather Channel:

News will be displayed through an interactive map, which users can navigate with the Wii's wireless controller, Kaplan said.

"The beauty of it is it zooms in and out of areas of the world," she said. "So if you really want to focus on regional news or national news versus international, you just blow up the map of the U.S."

I'm getting a bit excited about this now... I think it will be really cool if we can use it to get local news from around the world... stuff you wouldn't find on your normal website or cable news channel. Have to wait and see, though...

There have been videos of the news channel before. The interface is very similar to the Forecast Channel, including the globe. So instead of weather on a globe, you get news on a globe.

Nifty. Can't wait.

But again, I'm hoping that the AP keeps its news much more up to date than weathernews has been doing with the weather. Blasted hours old reports...

Wow, news channel is the best

combine the weather channel globe with news stories from around the world and you have a winner, my favorite part is when you zoom out, the news stories start to stack

It's here!

Yea the news stacking is really neat. It could use a better spread of news. Only 5 news stories in Chicago and a majority of them are sports related? Also, the labels on the areas don't change as you zoom out, news just stacks on the most dominant area. So when you are zoomed out all the way, there is a huge stack of news representing almost all of North America and it's labeled as "Washington Area."

Cool, I'll update the thread title now. I'm downloading it now, and i'm kinda sad that I didn't get a message from Nintendo telling me it's here, lol :(

Oh well, let's see how this is!

EDIT: Oh DAMN, this is actually pretty neat! Very nice layout, the slideshow feature is pretty awesome! The fact that new stories have that little glowing blue ball (LOL) next to the story, and it's gone when you read it.

Kinda funny, but go to the Tech news..you can read the article about the Wii getting the news channel :)

The Weather Channel is cool, but I'm liking this a bit more. Granted, it's really nothing major & exciting..but it's different and you gotta like that. :)

Wow, I really, really like the Weather-like globe that you can move around and read news from around the world. Not the most useful item on earth, but still very cool!

Local or state news would have been nice too, but oh well :)
