OFFICIAL Wii News Channel Thread. *OUT NOW*

Woke up to a blue light. I wish you could change the color of that thing to make it more creepy.

Uh, anyway, the update started, but the progress bar stayed at the zero mark for like 5 minutes. I had to leave for work, so I just turned the console off despite the instruction not to. It seemed to be fine when I turned it back on though.

High traffic slowing it down, XBL style? Not working? WE WILL FIND OUT.

Never got the blue light, but I d/l'd after seeing this thread. Very cool! I'm sure I'll use this more than the weather.

I was half away sorta rolling over in bed and the blue light popped on. On the news last night they mentioned the Wii news thing and yup sure enough. Pretty cool thus far. If you go to the tech part, it shows a PS3 launching in Europe story. Someone take a picture quick!

Its not without its "quirks" though. There was a story listed as being from Duluth and is shown on the map where Duluth, MN would be. When you open the story though, it shows that the story is actually from Duluth, GA. D'oh!

Definitely better than the Forecast Channel. Appears it updates everything each time it launches, no? That's good. Also, the interface is a lot prettier. I love how smooth the articles scroll. The globe is great.

Where's the globe you guys are talking about? All I get is a list of stories by different categories, are you talking about the slideshow?

If you select a story with the little blue globe icon next to it, you should see a "Globe" option in the bottom right.
If you select a story with the little blue globe icon next to it, you should see a "Globe" option in the bottom right.
Yup, or just can just click on the map to the right of the story. Stories with the little newspaper-esque icon lack this feature, for some reason.

I love the way the words jump around when you scroll in and out. Nintendo's certainly doing a lot of little touches to these channels to make them unique. I forsee using the news channel quite a bit actually as I've never quite added Google News or anything to my list of sites to have Firefox open up.

I was up the night the Weather Channel went live.

I saw my system go blue, literally, at 5:30 AM (I needed some water) and didn't think anything of it.

Oh wellz. I will get in on this shizz lata.

Okay so I've had it for like an hour now. I haven't found any easter eggs or anything sadly (unless you count that cat at the load screen), but some quick thoughts.

-Music isn't as catchy as I'd hoped (except when you first click it)
-I swear slideshow song is the same as one of the Elebits songs, or at least very similar
-I flipped on the morning news and a lot of the stories parallel each other
-Not liking the gray newspaper look, but design is very nice

Now my wishlist
-Sports scores/records sortable by profession
-Stock ticker
-Moviefone like feature
-Release dates for Wii/DS games in maybe a Nintendo News section
-Local news (though likely too hard)
-2-3 daily updates. It right now says last update 53 minutes ago when I downloaded it. I'm looking at that shit closely cause if it ends up like the weather then booo.
-Possible archive?

And the best thing they could add would be some sort of LIVE scroll thats ongoing while you browse. I think for the "non-reader" this will be great. So many people are just on the web checking up the latest NSFW and "funny" linkage, so between games it would be a hopefully this will be a good outlet that people will take advantage of.

EDIT: the slideshow song / elebits thing is really bugging me now.
EDIT 2: okay now I just thought, it really is the song. maybe it plays music from a recently played game? that would be fucking awesome.

Just checked out the News Channel as well. It's pretty slick, and I'll probably go to it more than I do the weather channel. I wish that you could go to the Globe from the main menu instead of having to click on the map on certain news articles. Overall, it is really pretty slick.

One thing I noticed about the slide shows, if you hit the 1 or 2 button, you can increase or decrease the amount of time between the slides. When you hit the button you'll hear a "beep" and if you look in the lower right-hand corner of the screen, the amount of dots will increase or decrease.

As far as the slideshow background music, I have Trauma Center in there right now, I'll check and see if the music is from that.

EDIT: Definitely not Trauma Center music. Just some jazzy tune, not sure if it is from Elebits or not.

I like the News Channel - and the update finally fixed my Forecast Channel which had been broken since the last update.

I think Nintendo could incorporate "Friends' News" in addition to National and International News. That way we could spin the globe and read little blog-like updates with pictures (obscene or not) from people on our friends lists. Just a thought.

Well its hit a day early. I got to say I am impressed its really setup well. You can hit the - + buttons to resize the text and when you do words move around on the screen it looks cool (I did that a bunch for no reason). All the news appears to be up to date I mean I couldnt tell if it was a few hours behind like the weather channel. I also liked the slide show thing. Finnaly the little cat told me that I could click on pics to inlarge them. That was a nice find.

Why doesn't my Wii ever glow when there is updates? Do you have to signup for them at Nintendo.com or something? I only knew the News Channel was working after seeing the title of this thread.

Anyway, I think it's awesome! I love how it shows you where the news originated from after clicking each link. I think the music is very catchy, I think they did a great job.

Hopefully the next channel is that rumored, DS Demo Download Channel... thing.

Oh crap. Now I want to go home and play with this. Glad to hear its exceeding a lot of people's expectations. Can't wait to check it out for myself. It's hard to envision the stacking stories you guys are describing.

Yukine you may have slot illumination turned off. Go to Wii options > Wii system settings > wiiconnect24 > Slot Illumination

Im surprised that they have ps3 news on there.
Im surprised that they have ps3 news on there.
I'm glad they don't seem to censor anything. The article about the death of Jennifer Strange is also available.

No, it's on. It glows when I get messages sent from other people, but I never get a message from Nintendo about updates... so it doesn't glow.

I don't know if this has already been mentioned, but if you hold the "1" button, a little red marker comes up, and it allows you to highlight text. It has no real use, but I thought I'd just mention it.

I have a feeling something bad is going to happen. I left my Wii on updating when I went to work, but when I came home it wasn't done. I think the connection went out in the middle of the update. It's stuck at about 90% done. Should I just wait it out or what?

I just read somewhere else that there is no NYC news, that we have to select Newark NJ! Can someone confirm this.

WTF!

I noticed that and found it somewhat surprising. Nintendo is not censoring any news stories and ia allowing you to go to any sites using the browser (barring using parental controls of course), yet they are still SO cautious when it comes to online play?

I really hope that Pokemon Battle Revolution's friend code system is only in place because of the DS interoperability, because if you are going to allow kids to read news stories about child porn, murder, and war on the Wii, why the fuck are you going over the top to stop Johnny from playing with strangers online?

Yes, there is nothing from NYC at the moment. But I think that might just because there is no "headline" news for NYC right now. Arizona only shows one news article, it will probably show up once there is something worth reporting about.

It should timeout.
It should timeout.
It should, but don't count on it. When the Weather Channel hit, I had it going for over 24 hours (at about 10%) before I gave up and rebooted. I ended up having to unplug it, but it worked fine after that.

Okay so my best friend is Greek and told me to look at Athens, Greece for the news. When I clicked on the link it provided a story from Athens, Georgia. This is a small mistake in the news channel program but funny.

That's because the Wii does not glow when you get an update. Your Wii only glows once something has been downloaded to your system, such as a message.

Updates are not automatically pushed onto systems, therefore your Wii has no reason to glow because it has not downloaded anything.

My Wii has never glowed because of a system upating simply being available, I have gotten messages from Nintendo though, that say a new update is available, and those messages make my Wii glow.

Anyway, updating now!

I was awakened by the sexy blue glow of my Wii about 45 miutes ago, so I knew The News Channel was available.

I've been playing around with it for the last 15 minutes, and I like it. I love the way the globe moves when going to differnt news stores around the way, and the way the font moves around when you zoom in and out.

Best part is, now I may be interested in hearing about news.

Yes, I know that. What I'm saying is that, it didn't glow at all. I didn't get a message from Nintendo informing me of the update, therefore it didn't glow. Not that the update was available and it didn't glow but rather I never got any message, nothing to commence it to glow.

Get it?

Someone asked earlier if you've got slot illumination on. Might be worth checkin' out.

Damnit, quote the other post that I edited!

It's on, I just never get any messages from Nintendo, not sure why. That's why I was asking whether or not I need to signup for them.

Edit: It doesn't matter much anyway, I just don't get why I'm unloved by Nintendo.

Ahh. I am not paying that much attention. I am blinded by my glowing Wii, you see.

:)

Wouldn't know how to help ya though. I'll look into it and add it to my (needs to be desperately updated) FAQ.

I think it's your attitude.

I did think of something - who gets them and who doesn't? By which I mean, I have linked my Wii to my Nintendo.com account, and I get the messages.

Is that the deal here? 'Cuz otherwise I didn't sign up for anything.

I didn't get the message (glowing slot) till about an hour ago or thereabouts. But I didn't actually see the message until I had downloaded the channel.

No message for me yet. Perhaps Nintendo sends them out in batches and I'm farther down on their mysterious list.

I checked my previous messages, and I received the Forecast Channel announcement on December 19th. I can't remember if it was before or after I had downloaded the channel, though.

Well, mine is still at the update page. It's been there for about 4 hours. Should i just cut it off, or should I let it sit there? I'm going out of town this weekend so I'm going to have to shut it off eventually.

Same here.

I propose we blame this man:

Wii News Channel is a very nice feature. I'll definately use it more than the Weather Channel. Hopefully I can get my wife to use it, and she'll be more comfortable with using the Wii. I need to get her to play coop on Wii Tennis!!!
