I got around to watching my new copy of DD DC last night and was quite confused over the ending and the movie in general. Here's my response right after the ending of the movie:
 WTF happened? The whole movie was somebody's dream or something? I thought this movie was supposed to be less confusing, but I'm still confused. I guess those of you that saw the first version were less confused, but I have no idea what most of the movie really was.
Anyone else confused? I know one of my friends is just as confused as I am. I was surprised that this is supposed to less confusing than the original version. Do the extras help explain some of that?

SPOILER Alert:

It was my understanding that Donnie did indeed live through everything in the movie, and near the end of the movie (after using his powers to return to an earlier point in time and knowing what he knew from his experience of what was to come), Donnie courageously chose to sacrifice his own life rather than to continue living and see many of those around him (especially the girl he liked) hurt. That was the noble, uplifting part of the whole thing for me.

I heard about the DC version, but havent seen it yet... the regular version hurts to think about...

I just don't get the point of the movie... at the end it, the whole movies essentially didn't happen... #-o

It was my understanding that Donnie did indeed live through everything in the movie, and near the end of the movie (after using his powers to return to an earlier point in time and knowing what he knew from his experience of what was to come), Donnie courageously chose to sacrifice his low life rather than to continue living and see many of those around him (especially the girl he liked) hurt. That was the noble, uplifting part of the whole thing for me.
oh.... now it makes sense....

its a lot like Butterfly Effect then....

Ahh, I never really got it that he had powers to change time. It's a little more clear now.

What are you talking about?

word
most of the movie takes place in the tangent universe that splits off in the beginning.
the end is back in the 'real' main universe as presented.

lots of great sites about the concept behind the story

also if you haven't spent some time with www.donniedarko.com/ you should

it helps to explain a lot
it's all in Roberta Sparrow's book. ;)

yea, i was confused. I was the 'other person' that had no idea what the hell was going on.

but yea, it seems a bit like the butterfly effect. but i suppose that tangent universe thing makes sense.

I haven't seen the director's cut but from what i've read about it, it seems to be less ambiguous about whats going on than the original, which i thought was one of the great things about it, like the whole time i'm thinking ok is this really happening or is donnie just shaqfuing crazy? I watched it with the directors commentary immediately after watching it normally and he was talking about how its a sci-fi movie and i was like, "what???????????? "

Major Spoilers.

It was my understanding from the director's commentary on that the movie in general is really a superhero film. With Donnie gaining super powers in the tangent universe because he is chosen to fix the anomoly that appears in the real universe which is the jet engine that falls on his room. He is forced to do this by way of his girlfriend being killed. And although I don't like it Richard Kelly said that Donnie wasn't sacrificing himself at the end of the movie, rather he was still not believing/having a state of euphoria that he saved the universe. Frank tries to save him at the end, which is the horn honking outside of his room before the engine crushes him.

WTF?

He has special powers????

It was way cooler when he was just a dude caught up in a time pocket destined to implode on itself.

Damn hollywood need to slap a happy ending / possible sequel on every movie.

Much cooler when he watches the world implode from the mountain top.

We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
Watch the world die

When you think about it his powers range from super-strength (carving into the cement with an axe) to some form of telekinesis by his tearing off of the jet engine with his mind and sending into the past thus saving the universe.

Huh

Seriously the engine didnt just fall off a plane.

Totally lame. I'm going to stick with my interpretation, lest this movie go from neat to UWE BOLL SUCK-FEST

Damn hollywood needs to slap a happy ending? Possible sequel? Are you joking? There was nothing really happy about this movie at all, and there is no way Richard Kelly is going to make a sequel. If you can't understand the Director's Cut so you just start making strange accusations, go to IMDB and look at the boards. You'll get it eventually. To jump on the bandwagon, *not confused at all* I prefer the original version, even thought I saw the Director's Cut first (in theaters). I need to pick it up on DVD, though, so thanks Crash, for reminding me.

Blah - I'm not throwing more money into this movie, once was enough.

It's a neat diversion - but in the end it just comes off as a poor-man's David Lynch.

this movie was pretty easy to get, you might have to watch it aain to understand EVERYTHING but the main points are pretty simple

I just watched my DC today. I thought it was a very good movie. The first time I ever heard of this movie was when a girl was giving her review of the DC on The Screensavers.

I hope yall dont think donnie was the bunny....the bunny was Frank, just some dude who made a cool holloween costume for the party and the donnie shoots him in the eye thats why his eye was messed up in the movie theater...also the jet engine was from the plane that his mom and sister was flying on.....its pretty simple movie to follow

It shows who Frank is, and you learn the name about 40 minutes or less in, and you see the plane engine get ripped off. those were the easiest parts to follow, other things made you think abit, like the two universes and such.
