COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Gov. Bob Taft will face misdemeanor charges for not reporting golf outings paid for by others, a prosecutor said Wednesday.

Taft, a second-term Republican and member of a distinguished U.S. political family, would be the first Ohio governor to be charged with a crime. If convicted of the four misdemeanors, he could be fined $1,000 and sentenced to six months in jail on each count, though time behind bars was considered unlikely. Taft will be charged later Wednesday, said City Prosecutor Stephen McIntosh, who declined to comment further pending an afternoon news conference.

I'd remark that, as an employee of Ohio but a resident of Kentucky, I'm pleased.

On the other hand, that would be denying that KY has any sort of gubernatorial scandal of its own, which is certainly untrue.

I can tell you where this thread is going: us lefites will demand that Taft be drawn and quartered, while the few remaining righties (PAD's been on vacation for the most part) will remind us of DNC gubernatorial scandals through intellectual remarks about "queers in jersey."

If he's guilty of 4 misdemeanors fine him. He won't do jail time, we all know that.

If he's been a good governor let him run on his merits and if the voters and party want him he'll continue on as governor. I know nothing about Ohio government so don't know if he's affected by term limits or he'd be eligible to run again. I also have no idea if he's been a decent governor. I would suspect any decent Republican challenger would be able to unseat him in a primary.

I find it pretty petty though that unreported golf outings got a state executive in this kind of hot water. Both parties have people that do this stuff all the time. If he broke the law let him face the penalties. I don't see why he's any different than the people that dole out contracts, jobs or anyone else in position to take advantage of questionable perks and get nailed.

I could care less about the NJ/McGreevy comparison. That man was absolute scum. Not because he was gay but because he went to the gay community for political cover after he was outed and he dragged his fawning idiot wife out by his side for his press conference. Oh, there was that and the BS that he decided not to make himself a ballot issue in November so NJ wouldn't, possibly, maybe go red just because voters were disgusted by the political machine in the state. Forget that they had a soon to be indicted ineffectual governor for what was it, 6-8 months? More important that Democrats don't become the issue.

Why is it that Republicans love to talk family values and yet when a Democratic woman sticks by her husband (McGreevy & Clinton come to mind) they are vilified for it?

They don't like women making *any* decisions. See Newt Gingrich kickin' his wife to the curb for an (oh, the delicious, delicious irony!) intern, whom I believe (which means I'm not positive on this) he did eventually marry.

Sheeeit, women makin' decisions and shit. Go ask Cindy Sheehan what a woman's allowed to do.

To be fair, however, family values and infidelity aren't very compatible issues (then again, neither are divorce and family values). Infidelity is not a partisan matter; to conjure up one of Al Franken's better impressions (Strom Thurmond), "The pecker knows no big-o-trah!"

How can a woman stick by her husband when the husband has said sorry honey, I don't even like your gender sexually any more. I've joined the pillow biters.

Just how can she stick by someone that has flat out rejected not just her but women in general?
 
Honestly, if my wife cheated on me because she was gay, I'd have less of a problem than if she was straight or bisexual. If she was a lesbian and cheated with a girl, at least I'd know it was likely because she was gay more than because of something with me or something wrong with out relationship. Though, that's not saying I wouldn't be pissed off and distraught either way. And I'd be pissed that she didn't tell me, and I had to find out not only after we married, but after she cheated on me.

Your argument doesn't make much sense unless you have a problem with gays. If someone cheats on you and breaks up with you, how does rejecting all sexual relationships with your gender make that worse? At least there was a legitimate reason. Not for lieing, cheating etc. for all those years, but still better than what goes on when most people cheat.

I have absolutely no idea what pillow biters means though.

Taft convicted! Fantastic. As an Ohioan, I'm sick of living in what is considered the most corrupt state in the union. I think it's great they put him on trial and fined him. At the very least, that indicates that he can't do whatever he wants.

I understand PAD's point about the outing and gift non-reporting happening all the time, but there seems to be an anything goes attitude but Ohio's republican party. That needs to stop.

Now we just need to impeach him.
