OiNK raided by British feds, shut down. Feds now trying to get user identities.
Ya'll are going to jail!
If I'm going to jail, I'm flipping on Cheapy, who allowed an OiNK invite thread to be on his website forums.

"This was not a case of friends sharing music for pleasure."

According to the RIAA, such a concept doesn't exist.

If music from a CD that you purchased is being enjoyed by someone other then you, then you are a thief.

Heck according to the RIAA transfering music from your own CDs to your own mp3 player makes you a thief too right?

Not sure. But a car repair shop in the UK was sued for playing the radio in an area where customers could hear it - because the record labels claimed it amounted to a public performance. This is just a small step away from suing me for driving my car around town with the radio up and the windows down.

I used to follow bands closely, even moreso in the days of Napster. Now I just listen to internet radio and I don't pay much attention to specific bands because the prices to sample anything specific are ridiculous and it's just not worth the risk to go P2P. So I can't name many bands who play the music I like, I'm not purchasing music, and I'm not P2Ping music - I guess the RIAA won?

Wow, I have really crappy luck.

I got an invite about a week ago, signed up yesterday and now this happens. I didn't even get a chance to download anything!

sorry about that. im bummed too because i invited you, and several other friends who never got to use it. but im more bummed because i didnt download anything for about 2 or 3 weeks, if i knew it was going to get shut down i would have gone nuts on the site.
Hope all you OiNK users had Peer Guardian installed
PeerGuardian wouldn't prevent your IP from being stored in Oink's server logs.

Found this on a blog created by one of the former mods.

Q: Do I have to worry about my password?
A: Passwords have never been stored as plain text anywhere. Only as salted MD5 hashes. Also, police or industry agencies do not care about your password. If it lets you sleep any better, change it on all other trackers and such. But it is not required at all.

Q: Do I as a normal user need to be scared?
A: No. The logs stored were not enough to incriminate any of our users. They have better things to do than hunt down 180,000 Britney Spears fans.

Q: Did you log IP adresses with all the transfers?
A: No of course we did not.

Q: What about those who donated?
A: Honestly, we do not know. Of course you cannot expect to get any donated money back. Accounts have been seized, so far nobody knows whats gonna happen. If you did not donate like thousands of dollars, you should not worry too much.
Looks like TPB is going to try and bring back OiNK. Shitty part is its going to be a public tracker.

Haha. The pirate bay is so bad. If you really want to be caught downloading copyrighted material thats the torrent site to use. Although the worst you will get is a warning and then have your ISP close your account on you. I wouldnt trust any site related to them either.

OiNK is dead. Let it stay that way. IRC is a better place to get new music anyways. Old stuff may be difficult now but if you talk to people you can get someone to send you just about anything anyways.

Here's another one, this time from Rob Sheridan of Nine Inch Nails' fame.

Ugh, just let it stay dead. I hate public trackers.

The only reason OiNK was so good was because the powers that be forced it to be. Yes, it's possible to draw a great fanbase at first but it takes something anything to keep it at that quality (hell just look what happened here)

Thanks for the link, excellent read

The press release says: "This was not a case of friends sharing music for pleasure." Wh - what?? That's EXACTLY what it was! No one made any money on that site - there were no ads, no registration fees. The only currency was ratio - the amount you shared with other users - a brilliant way of turning "free" into a sort of booming mini-economy. The anti-piracy groups have tried to spin the notion that you had to pay a fee to join Oink, which is NOT true - donations were voluntary, and went to support the hosting and maintenance of the site. If the donations spilled into profit for the guy who ran the site, well he damn well deserved it - he created something truly remarkable.

LoL I had the same reaction
