That's only because not as many people played Okami, most likely because they were put off by its graphics. I completely agree that Okami deserves Game of the Year, or maybe second behind Oblivion.

Put off by it's graphics?! Every damn review praised it's graphics to high heaven! It's graphics were a huge selling point.

I played it but got bored. It was pretty good, though, but I'm burnt out on the Zelda gameplay style. I thought Bully was LOADS more endearing.
Not to say that Okami is bad; it is quite good at what it does (Except for the complete lack of mental or skill challenge.). But it just doesn't do it for me.

This is the first game in some time that actually had me excited to play...and kept me thinking about the game after the power went off. It's a great experience. The battle system was simplistic, but the graphics and adventure were pure bliss.

My money is on that being because they made a Zelda game without Link, and really without outdoing Link's previous efforts in any specific way.
The hooks they have, the Celestial Brush being second only to the ability to raise hind leg and tinkle on your opponents, just didn't send it home.

I'm with you. Way too easy, and I didn't really get into the story.

Its graphics got it more critical acclaim, but I would be extremely willing to bet that they also lost it a lot of sales. A lot of gamers don't like cel-shaded graphics, and almost no casual gamers do, so all the Zelda fans that would have loved it never even tried it.
On a side note, PSM gave it their Game of the Year award.
