Capcom has finally confirmed persistent rumours that Okami is coming to Nintendo Wii, telling a London audience this week that the game will arrive on our screens in spring 2008.

Celebrated on PS2 for its absorbing puzzle and action adventure mechanics, gripping narrative inspired by Japanese folklore and beautiful watercolour visuals, its rebirth on Wii has been much hyped.

The game also lends itself rather well to the potential of Nintendo's Wiimote for control. Amaterasu's Celestial Brush - a paintbrush used in combat and for solving puzzles - is a perfect fit for the Wiimote, and so it proves, while combat will also include various "motion-controlled physical attacks".

On the whole though, it's the game that Kristan loved so much it got top marks, calling it "a game so engrossing, so crafted and so life-affirming that nothing else in the world seems to matter". In sentence number two.

It seems like a perfect fit. I haven't played it yet so I'll probably be picking this up.

Great news for those that haven't played it. Not sure I'd rebuy (maybe in 2-3 years), but it was one of my favorite games of last gen.

Hopefully $30, $40 would make me sad. But I'd still buy it as I can now take the PS2 version off my list (almost bought a PS2 to play it back in October, but I waited).

Might not be much of an expectation. Let's wait and see how UC does.

Okami launched on the PS2 at $40 so $30 for the Wii launch shouldn't be too much of a shock. I wonder if they'll do a straight port like Resident Evil 4 or if they'll add things like bloom lighting and what not. The game is still at least 5-6 months away.

Bloom lighting wouldn't really fit with the cel shaded graphics. I'd love to see them make it 16x9 and 480p, but that's pretty unlikely. Maybe 480p, but I doubt they'd take the time to redo it in 16x9.

Capcom's forecast for UC is 600k worldwide. Famitsu's forecast for Japan only is 500k.

Okami sales numbers are scarce, but wikipedia has it 200k US and 66k Japan in 2006, which would be the vast majority of sales.

Its a low target, but the Wii 2008 install base is going to make it hard to score the necessary attach rate to beat the PS2 totals. I certainly wouldnt mind seeing it happen though.

Great game, but I don't think there is any way I would replay this game again. It started to drag even on the PS2, 40 hours was way to long for this.

wow I might have to start letting off on some of my Wii-hating lol

Great pickup title for the Wii and also I saw on gametrailers a title from makers of Odin sphere... hopefully 3rd party support starts to pick up because I dont really get excited about the expected nintendo titles we have all got used to..

Good job nintendo now keep it going and maybe just maybe down the road I may re-buy a Wii lol (wont hold my breath)

Now if anyone wants to unload the version they have for the PS2 feel free to CML !! lol

I second that

I didn't think it dragged at all. But I'm still not likely to want to replay a 40 hour game anytime soon.

Edit: Only gripe in that regard would be that you fight most of the bosses 2 or 3 times, so that got a bit repetitive.

While I didnt play it, my brother played it all the way through, and as far as I can tell, it really shouldve ended at about the halfway point, when you thought you had the game beat the first time.

i'll be looking to pick this up. i never got a ps2, so the more great games that comes wii's way the better.

I'm really glad this is true, I've been holding off buying the PS2 version of Okami since the rumors first started about the Wii version. Another Zelda style game on the Wii sound great.

I'm currently playing through the PS2 version and I'm at the 6 hour mark or so. I've heard that the game does kind of drag from many people so I'm not sure I'll make it through the whole thing or not.

I like the game, but the combat is pretty repetitive. I'm just borrowing it so maybe I'll give it back and wait for the Wii version.

Drawing with the analog stick worked great, but the wiimote should be even better. And the rest of the controls should be fine as the Wiimote/nunchuk have plenty of normal buttons for this game (i.e. shouldn't have to map stuff other than menus to +/- or the d-pad).

1. I'll wait for the press release before believing any conformation

2. Wii gets another port instead of a new game
They'd have to try pretty hard to have it be worse than drawing with an analog stick. For the rest...theres an analog stick.
That's what makes me a little skeptical-- the game relied heavily on a second analog stick. If this is a straight port, they'll have to re-do the camera completely.

and I agree the game should've ended around the half-way point. It's one of my favorite PS2 games, but I still haven't finished it...

Glad that the game is getting a second chance though :)

That's true, I didn't think of that. I was contantly adjusting the camera with the right stick.

Guess they'd have to reprogram in to just always stay centered behind you, and/or have just an auto center button.

Perhaps if they have to do that much programming work, 16x9 and 480p is a possibility.
You dont draw while moving right? If thats the case, they can replace analog camera with waggle.
Good point. you're right, you stop the game to draw.
You dont draw while moving right? If thats the case, they can replace analog camera with waggle.
That could work I suppose, but you'd have to make it so you hold down a button to move the camera with waggle. Otherwise it would be way too shaky.

i got 60 hours out of it, loved every minute, and then played through it again. there's the possibility that i'm insane, though.

Capcom officially announced it at Capcom Gamer's Day in London.

2. Wii gets another port instead of a new game

At least it is a port of a game that people might actually want to play.

I have the PS2 version, and I am very happy about this news.

Though I'd love to see a sequel, there's always a place for a feel-good game like Okami on the Wii.

Now where's our Wii Katamari game?
Hopefully $30, $40 would make me sad. But I'd still buy it as I can now take the PS2 version off my list (almost bought a PS2 to play it back in October, but I waited).
Were on the same boat as I did as well, then these rumors flew and I waited...

It reminds me of the RE4 coming out on cube then the rumors flew about PS2 and I assume that hurt the cubes RE4 sales to some degree.

Well its going to work the opposite way around this time for sure.

Good Wiimote controls, fix the slowdown issues, include a few extras, add a $30 price tag and I'll buy it day one.

So, assuming this is true, there's probably more people in this thread willing to buy it than originally bought it, right?

And if it fails to sell, consider that to just fuel the "fuck the Wii, We can't compete with Nintendo" sentiment from Capcom, who seems to already be stuffed full of that.
I personally think the Wii fanbase will appreciate this game far more than the PS2 fanbase.
I don't know about that. The PS2 had a ton of quirky Japanese games.

I think the hardcore Nintendo fans on the Wii will love it though, as it's very Zelda-esque. But clearly the casuals and non-gamers won't buy it. It's very hard to tell what portion of the market they make up. I mean Metroid Prime 3 is great, but selling kind of slowly, which would suggest that they make up a big chunk of it. But you can't really make that interpretation since the MP games weren't huge sellers either (especially the 2nd one).

At any rate, it's a weird, niche kind of game, so it unfortunately won't do huge business. I don't think it will even come close to the numbers it did on the PS3.

I've never played Okami so I don't know how the camera works, but the Wii version of the Godfather used the D pad to control the camera and it worked just fine.

The camera was the worst part of the original Okami. You would change it and once you started moving, it would reset to it's orginal position.
I've never played Okami so I don't know how the camera works, but the Wii version of the Godfather used the D pad to control the camera and it worked just fine.
It would be uncomfortable in Okami since the D-pad is hard to reach in the Wiimote-nunchuk combo set up, and you have to screw with the camera all the time in Okami.

Well, like a lot of other games, I bought this on release and haven't played it, so I may consider dumping it on ebay and waiting for the Wii version. I did something similar with Bully (I had snagged that when it was on sale for $20 and got my money back - will probably get the 360 version).

I have no idea what Okami would sell for or if I'd want to bother, but I'll have to consider it. I'm not about to play the PS2 version any time soon.
