Okami Wii Confirmed!

I'm another one who's A) never picked up a PS2 and B) waited to hear this annoucement with great anticpation. I have thought about getting a PS2 (and even have a few PS2 wants on my tradelist) but haven't gone after this one.

The rumors have just been at critical mass for a while on this. It was just waiting for confirmation. I say "W00T!!"

I think it's great that they're taking it over to the Wii, but I couldn't get into the game after maybe 3 hours or so. If the 40+ hrs to completion thing is true, I'll take a pass. But it's still a nice addition to the library if it shows up with a nice MSRP, gets the attention that RE4 got in its conversion, and features some worthwhile extras.

It took me 35. The first few hours are a bit slow, just like in Zelda.
and I agree the game should've ended around the half-way point. It's one of my favorite PS2 games, but I still haven't finished it...

Glad that the game is getting a second chance though :)
Same here. It's awesome, but the pacing ... I don't know. Like others, I hit the half-way point and fizzled out. I've been thinking about finishing it, but I played it so long ago I'm sure I'd never be able to just pick up where I left off, and if I'm starting over, I might as well do it on this version, especially if it's $30.

Oh fucking right, I never played the PS2 game because of not being able to play my ps2 whenever I want, but now that it is out for the Wii, day one purchase for me.

WTF? Is Okami rare or something? I thought I might be able to get half my money back if I sold it sealed on eBay, which would be OK since I bought it with trade-in credit worth about half-price in real money.

But it is selling at retail on ebay (more with shipping). Looks like most have ended $36-$40. Now I'm thinking I should hold on to it even if I intend to play the Wii version . If it gets a pre-Christmas bump that might be the time to sell it (a month or so from now perhaps). And here I thought it would be a Greatest Hits title soon enough. Did it not sell very well?

I'm not sure where you guys are coming up with the Wii version being $30 or thereabouts. Is that in any info from Capcom? I'd assume it will come out at $50. Unlike RE4, this isn't a port from a previous Nintendo console of a $19.99 MSRP game. The game is still $40. Perhaps it will come out at $40, which would be fair. In that case, if I can sell mine for $40 I'd have no problem getting the Wii version upon release.

It released for $40 on the PS2, so there's no way it'll be $50 on the Wii (well, no logical way). $30 isn't much of a stretch there, unless they want to be more like Ubisoft (Two Thrones, I mean, Rival Swords) than... themselves (RE4). If they don't release it cheaper than it was released initially, you lose a big opportunity to get a lot of people to double-dip, and for the people who are in the know, we'd be hard-pressed to pay what we've not paid for the game so far. I will buy it if it's $40, since I know a price drop will be a long-time coming, but I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't.

IGN Interview.

IGN: Has Clover Studios or any of the original Okami team been involved in the conversion? If so, in what capacity?

Didier Malenfant:
No, everything was done in-house at Ready At Dawn Studios. We had to make sure we'd be able to do this because with the distance and the time difference with Japan it would have made things a lot more difficult for us to wait on info when we had questions. So in a way, it made things harder in the beginning but the guys we have here are some of the most talented people in the industry and we pulled it off without a problem.

IGN: What has been the biggest challenge when converting the game for Wii?

Didier Malenfant:
The biggest challenge for us is that, because of time constraints, we did not use the Ready At Dawn Engine to port the game. Instead we ported Clover's code and assets directly. In these cases it's always tough to work with code that you're not familiar with, especially with Japanese comments. But after a little while, we knew our way around it like it was our own stuff so it's not causing that much problems now. Of course, converting all the assets and making sure they're optimized for the Wii is also very time consuming. It's just all worth it when you see the game come up on the Wii screen for the first time.

IGN: How have the graphics been enhanced?

Didier Malenfant:
Okami is a total passion-project for both Ready At Dawn and Capcom. When we first discussed it with them, two things were very clear right off the bat: Firstly, taking after a studio like Clover is some pretty big shoes to fill, something everyone here is very comfortable with given our past projects. Second, this game is such a masterpiece in its own right that we had to do everything we can to reproduce the experience that players had on the PS2 as closely as possible. To this day the graphics of Okami are some of the most awe-inspiring ever seen in a video-game and I know it sounds cliche but you don't want to fix something that's not broken.

IGN: How do the Wii controls work with the game's painting system? Will there be enhanced functionality?

Didier Malenfant:
That's going to be the best part. Okami was made to be played on the Wii. Or maybe the Wii was designed with Okami in mind... I'm not sure. Either way, it's a perfect combination, we use the Wii-mote to control the brush strokes and it feels absolutely awesome. I think people will be shocked when they try it for themselves.

What new content appears in the game, compared to the PS2 version?

Didier Malenfant:
The game on Wii is going to be an exact port of the PS2 version and I think that's what fans of the franchise want to see. This game has such a huge following throughout the world that people would probably send us death-threats if we messed it up by trying to add things that don't have their place in the Okami universe. Being huge fans of the franchise ourselves, we made sure that Capcom also wanted to stay true to the original before signing on to do this.

Will the Wii version offer anything to those who have completed the original?

Didier Malenfant:
Everyone we talk to is saying that they're going to replay this even if they finished the original. The Wii controls are perfect for this game and it makes the game play come to life in so many ways. There are also people who never finished or played the PS2 version and this will be their opportunity to experience Okami the way it was meant to be. This game is a huge milestone in our industry and we're going to give a lot more people a chance to see it for themselves when it comes out on the Wii.

Add one more to the camp that didn't have a PS2 and never got to play this (but wanted to). Day one buy for me, unless something goes horribly wrong.

Since Ready At Dawn is doing essentially a straight port of the title, I hope they pour all of their effort into control and graphical improvements (which, based on the interview above, seems to be the case). In the latter department, I think 16:9, 480p support would entice a lot of people to double dip.

I was playing through the PS2 version but I have stopped since this news has become more solid. I was having problems using the analog stick to draw some of the celestial brush stuff, so painting with the Wiimote should be a big improvement.

Very good news I really loved playing Okami i'll be getting this on the day it comes in also I agree there were parts that seemed too long and stuff, but after finishing it and watching the credits made it worth it i'm still trying to get the unlockables stuff done.

Capcom Talks Okami Port

When some fans complain that the upcoming Wii rendition doesn't add anything, the publisher responds.
by Matt Casamassina

October 24, 2007 - One of the biggest no-brainer announcements in recent months was official word from Capcom that it is underway with and planning to publish a Wii version of Okami. The title will be a port of the already-released PlayStation 2 version with added Wii remote functionality. Although fans have been asking for exactly that since the critically acclaimed adventure game was revealed, some Wii owners recently made their dissatisfaction with the port unknown, alleging that it's bound to be little more than a copy and paste job with little care or love put into the adaptation process. This is all based on news that, like its PS2 predecessor, the Wii title could lack 480p and 16:9 support.

On Capcom's official American forums, though, company's senior director of strategic planning and research, Christian Svensson, chimed in to defend Okami for Wii. Here's what he had to say on the subject:

A few points here... I get the issues, I really do, but people seem to be missing a few things.
We selected Ready at Dawn to do the port. These guys are all ex-Naughty Dog and ex-Blizzard, and they have already shipped their own titles that have ridiculously high review scores and sales (and have more on the way). Their attention to detail and technical prowess is among the best of any team I've ever worked with.

If we wanted a cheap and dirty port, I could have turned around and picked any one of 50 houses and gotten it done for less and perhaps more quickly. Clearly, that wasn't the approach we sought for a variety of reasons (for the fans, for the reputation of our company, for the potential of the product, etc.).

Lastly, if this were a quick cash in, let's face it, there's TONS of other products that had higher sales on other platforms we could have chosen to port, quickly and cheaply. Okami, as great as it was, wasn't a huge seller on PS2 such that its quick and dirty port would be assured "sales success" on a new platform. We picked a huge game (read: expensive, especially on testing costs), with a ton of moving parts.

So, on the contrary, we have a lot to prove with this game and I know we, and RAD are up to the task. I apologize if I bristle at the accusation that this is a cheap port, but I do.

Given that the only port we've done to date was RE4, which has a 90+ gamerankings score and provided AMAZING value for the platform, has this really been Capcom's modus operendi such that this allegation should be leveled at us? Zack & Wiki is getting better reviews than just about anything you'll see this year on Wii, except possibly Galaxy. Shovelware is not what we do.

As I've said in prior interviews, we're getting the game up and running first. The game is enormous. If after we have everything working correctly, cleanly and as desired so as not to "break" the amazing experience that is Okami, we will worry about potential enhancements. As we are NOT at that point in the process yet, we are loathe to even mention any potential changes or enhancements for fear of disappointing the fans/media.

So for now, if you MUST assume the worst, assume that you will have an amazing 40-60 hour adventure that is one of gaming's most impressive pieces of art to play in fantastic new ways. If you want to hope for the best, well, perhaps we'll have more to say in a few months, but for now we're going to have to ask for your patience.

I can respect that. A lot of his points are spot on, even going to the point that they would bother to port Okami in the first place (which bombed and has a very small likelihood of turning a profit on the Wii) and the fact that they picked an A class developer to the work the thing onto a Wii when they could have gone with someone much cheaper to do the port goes a long way in their decision to back the Okami project. Personally, I think we'll end up getting 16x9 and 480p because if they can make God of War look like it does on the PSP, I don't have any worries.

There's absolutely no question the Wii can run the game in 16x9 and 480p. The question is whether they'll put the $$$ into putting the game in 16x9 and 480p.

Hopefully they will, as I could see replaying it in a year or two just to see it the way it should be on my 50" HDTV (played through Okami on my old 27" SDTV last fall).

First weeeeee games were ported to the ps2 and now ps2 games are ported to the weeeeeeee. I guess it has to get more than 2 good games someway.
