It looks like Okami has been given a third chance, this time with a sequel on the DS. Very little is known at this point, though there is a scan.

Why do you call it a third chance. They previous ones were both fantastic and did very well as far as reviews were concerned. More like a well deserved sequel port to the DS. I mean for god's sake, the game is about drawing with a paint brush. DS Stylus, paint brush, DS Stylus, paint brush. Im sure you can make the connection. I wouldn't be surprised if Gamestop even came out with a special Paintbrush Stylus for the game with the preorder XD.

Capcom has never seemed to be extremely happy with Okami's sales (though I think there was a recent announcement that the Wii version sold okay). Honestly after the sales of the PS2 and Wii version I didn't expect to see a sequel.

I actually think the DS is perfect for the paint brush powers, and I think it could be a very good game much like Phantom Hourglass.

What he means is it tanked on home consoles, which is why they decided to go ultra low development cost/high marketshare for this last try.

Okami Set for DS
Take control of baby Okami in an all new adventure.
by John Tanaka

September 1, 2009 - Last week's big 7-Eleven reveal, Okamiden, has turned out to be a DS title. As promised, this week's Famitsu got the first word on the new game.

Fully titled Okamiden: Chisaki Taiyou, the followup to the critically acclaimed PS2 original puts players in control of what appears to be a new wolf character, Chibiterasu. Picture a baby version of Okami main character Amaterasu, right down to the red marks. We can't share the artwork with you until Capcom provides official online media, but one word comes to mind when seeing Chibiterasu: adorable.

Okamiden follows the events of the original Okami by a few months, in a world now restored to peace. Issun, Amaterasu' guide from the original, accompanies Chibiterasu to Sakuya, the girl who called Okami to the world in the original. Sakuya asks Chibiterasu for some form of help.

You take control of Chibiterasu in a game whose fundamentals appear rooted in the original Okami. Just as you did in the original, you'll be exploring the game's brilliantly colored (well, for the DS) world while combatting monsters and solving puzzles. Much of the gameplay is being kept under wraps at present, but the combat system does appear to resemble that of the original.

The switch to the DS brings about some major changes thanks to the stylus. Capcom will be letting you use the stylus to make direct drawings with your Celestial Brush. Your uses of the brush once again include such things as drawing circles to make trees spring to life with flowers and drawing lines to slash enemies.

Also new for Okamiden is the presence of partner characters for Chibiterasu. Chibiterasu has to work together with the partners in order to progress.

As an example, there's a section of the world where the two have to cross a crumbling bridge. They wouldn't be able to get across with the partner riding on Chibiterasu's back. To clear this part of the game, you'll have to make use of the stylus to draw out a path for the partner character to follow on his own. Once the partner crosses to the other side of the bridge, you can directly move Chibiterasu across the bridge.

Famitsu introduces one such partner character, the young Kuninushi, son of a swordsman named Susano who appeared in the original. As you play through Okamiden, you'll apparently find out why Susano is suddenly able to have a son despite there being only a few months gap from the original.

(We previously made it sound like Kuninushi is the only partner character. There are actually multiple partner characters, but Kuninushi is the only one introduced in this week's Famitsu).

The original Okami was the swan song for Clover Studio before key members of the studio went on to form Platinum Games. From what we can tell, Okamiden is being developed within Capcom. The game's producer is Motohide Eshiro, producer of Ace Attorney Investigations and director of Onimusha 2. The game's director is Kuniomi Matsushita, a planner on Dino Crisis who went on to direct the Wii version of Okami.

In an interview with Famitsu, the two revealed a surprising start for Okamiden. In December of last year, Matsushita approached Eshiro and said that he wanted to make a portable version of Okami. Not only that, but he'd already created an advanced prototype. After seeing the prototype, Eshiro decided to turn it into a full product.

The magazine asked Matsushita why he wanted to bring Okami to a portable system. His response was that he wanted to give as many people as possible a chance to know the charms of Okami's visuals and game systems.

We already know the charms of Okami (it was our game of the year in 2006), and now we look forward to getting another look at the game on the small screen. Okamiden isn't due out in Japan until 2010, but we'll hopefully get a sneak peak at the Tokyo Game Show later this month.

This is exciting news and I'll definitely but it but I would have preferred it as a Wii sequel. Still, this is good and definitely better than it being on a system I don't own.

Okami on a DS does seem like a no brainer since the game use's a celestial brush. I still have to beat Okami on the wii, but I will be looking forward for more news on this game.

The lack of involvement from key members of the original sucks hardcore, but I'm counting on them doing without, and I'm totally excited anyways.

For a DS owner and Okami fan, this is great news! Hopefully it will sell well enough to warrant a proper next gen sequel. Imagine using Natal or Sony's new motion controller to paint the world!

That would be sweet to see this game running PS3/360 caliber graphics.

I think that Okami's art direction carry the visuals as a whole much further than 720p and more geometry could, and the paintbrush mechanic is just made for DS and/or Wii.

D'aaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

Holy crap, first Tatsunoko vs. Capcom coming to NA and now Okami 2 on the DS. Thank you, Capcom!

Considering Okami is my second favorite game on the Wii (only second to Prime 3-Corruption), this is a no brainer day one!

i feel guilty. i have Okami on PS2 but ive never played it. i really need to pop it in. plus i wonder who is going to be behind this sequel seeing that Clover is no longer together, am i right?

Just put in Ikami on my wii... watched the intro. I have had it since Christmas last year...

Gotta start this game soon.

Good news.

Clover is now Platinum Games. They made Madworld.

Couldn't agree more, it seems like there's a great new DS game announced every week.

I'm going to buy this game. Between this, Ace Attorney Investigations, and the English Art of Gyakuten Saiban, Capcom will have a nice chunk of my money in the coming months.

I loved Okami on the PS2--favorite game of last gen.

A bit bummed that a sequel is for the DS. I still have my Lite though I haven't touched it in months. Just hasn't been anything that's interested me and I just hate spending my limited gaming time on the tiny DS screen (no need to game on the go).

I love that Okami is getting a sequel, but it was such a great visual game, I'd really love a sequel on the 360 with HD graphics.

The stylus would work well though. I just hate playing longer games on the small screen vs. my 50" HDTV. :( But if it gets good reviews I'll have to pick it up anyway.

There was a sequel rumoured for quite a while, however there was nothing to back such a rumour.

Capcom patenting a new Okami titled games a very good sign that one could be announced in the near future.
