It's not bad... but nothing compares to Mario Kart.

Had shadowrun, Mario RPG and Mystical Ninja in a cart---I hesitated and now their all gone :whistle2:(
Don't know if I'll ever replay it, but Shadowrun is one of the few RPGs that I hung onto from that era . . . I liked it so much better than the Final Fantasy types.

I have a complete copy.

Very cool game as I recall.

It's OK. SNES Shadowrun pales in comparision to Genesis Shadowrun (in terms of being like the paper & pencil game).

Got this a couple weeks ago and I got a MINT I mean MINTTT complete copy. It reinvigorated me and gave me new perspective on the morning update that I've lost over the years.

It depends on what you're looking for.

In the SNES game, you leveled up hit points and your gun had unlimited ammo. Your character became a Dog shaman and maintained his/your magical power no matter how much cyberware he/you had installed. Decking was incredibly simple.

In the Genesis game, you had to level up your attributes to better resist damage. Managing ammo was a big deal if you were trigger happy. On top of that, you had to dodge enemies until your gun skill was good enough to kill enemies as they approached you. If you wanted magic, you could start as a Gator shaman or you could hire somebody. If you installed cyberware, it had a negative impact on magical ability. Decking was a lot deeper, too. You had to buy new and expensive decks and you had to buy the right programs. If upgraded a program to be bigger than your RAM, you couldn't use it.

The only bad thing about the Genesis version were the chokepoints. By that, I mean you would need so much money to complete the next task. In order to get the money, you might have to complete dozens and dozens of low paying "Gunderson" runs that were nearly identical. It could be very repetitive.

Conversely, you never ran out of money on the SNES or you could collect a lot more just by blasting enemies.

The SNES version of the game was a decent straightforward RPG with the Shadowrun brand slapped on it.

The Genesis version of the game was a port of the first edition rules to a video game.

You'll enjoy the SNES version as long as you don't play the Genesis version first.

I enjoy both but I would've liked the Genesis version with SNES graphics. Honestly it's really too bad Shadowrun just hit the 16 bit consoles and left after that. Sure FASA has one for the 360 but I'd also like to see another 2D one, either tucked into the new game itself or sold separately.
snes version was awesome never finished it. I've been looking for a copy for forever.
Not to suggest anything too illegal, but the ROMs can be downloaded from the Internet and played on emulators.

It is supposedly legal to own the ROMs and emulators so long as you:

1. Own the system the emulator emulates.

2. Own the game.

However, neither the system nor the game have to be functional. I think it has something to do with fair use law.

EDIT: Also, you can "rent" any ROM you don't own the game to for 24 hours. Then, you have to delete it. Of course, there's nothing legally preventing you from downloading the ROM for another 24 hours.

If anybody is looking for the Genesis Shadowrun, the Elizabethtown (KY) Game Crazy has a cart only for $14.99. I think that's the going price after shipping on eBay.

Since I already own one and use ROMs/emulators when I'm jonesing for a fix of this game, I could pick it up and ship it to whoever.

Nice overview! I only had a SNES back in the day and knew nothing about the differences. I also never played the paper and pencil game.

I grew to hate the Final Fantasy type of RPG . . . the random battles annoyed me because I usually lack time when playing and hate to get bogged down. Personally, I like the Zelda or Secret of Mana style of "live" battles and not the turn-based combat.

So, for me Shadowrun SNES was great because it was somewhat action oriented and you didn't get bogged down in leveling up. I remember doing a bunch of rounds in a junkyard to get cash and move up but mostly it was just moving forward.

The game also added a layer of cyberpunk storyline which I enjoyed.

It really is a shame that the franchise hasn't been updated.
College sucks. I keep missing the updates.
Seriously, I second everyone elses horror at that statement... as I sit here at work, having not been able to sleep in for the past two months (almost literally - and not as a result of the update), I miss the time when you only occasionally had to get up for a 9am class (8am vanished after freshman year and didn't return until about a year ago).
Brute force is an excellent game............but has a terrible escort mission that I could never get past especially for 5.99 B/C
There, fixed it.

There's a Shadowrun first person shooter in the works for the 360.

http://www.mistresslair.net/forums/printthread.php?t=8488

I doubt it'll be anywhere as good as the Genesis version.

The last time I was playing Shadowrun via downloaded ROM, I stumbled upon a story of a Japanese game that was related to Shadowrun. But ... I'm not going to learn Japanese just to play a video game.

The thing that annoyed me about the SNES version was having to stand still to shoot. You had to aim a cursor while all of the enemies on the screen were plunking you.

On the Genesis console, you could keep an enemy locked on and outmanuveur it.

Another interesting note ...

Unlike the SNES version and countless RPGs, your combat effectiveness decreased as you became more damage. If you got hurt by a punch or a bullet, you would have to shoot or punch more to defeat an enemy. So, there was a huge incentive to stayed healed at all times.

Thanks for the info fatherofcaitlin -- makes me feel a bit better about not getting it :)
College sucks. I keep missing the updates.
I got up for the update this morning and went right back to sleep. Gonna do it tomorrow too :) Of course, my first class was kind of a blur....

Yep, the Shadowrun games were awesome. And there was one more, for the Sega CD that was totally different than the Genesis or SNES versions. However it was only released in Japan, is rare as shit, and, well...entirely in Japanese. :)

Thanks for all the info on the Shadowrun differences. I played the SNES version as a kid for quite a while before getting stuck.

I played the ROM a while back for kicks, I was enjoying it a lot.

About the SNES version being easier, hell, it was still hard...

This decided me though:

Sold. I will grab the Genesis version when I can get it. Are the graphics much worse? Genesis was always behind in the graphics dept.
