These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Is there any way to look at what the previous values reported on a game?
You can search through this thread and previous ones to see what a game has been reported in the past. With the TIV Tracker you can sort by date and then go through the list of past updated values through that as well. Here are the previous GS TIV Threads: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14

Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

I don't want to get hassled about the values I post, how can I get the information out there?
If you do not feel comfortable or willing to put the values in the thread you have two options available. You can input them in the TIV tracker or you can send them to me via PM. Either way the database and these lists will be updated. Putting them into the TIV tracker does save me some time later on.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

What are the refurb fees on games?
There appears to be set prices for set value ranges. We aren't 100% certain on the splits just yet. Here is what we have currently:
$0.25-$2 Value: $0.75 Refurb Fee
$2.01-$4 Value: $1 Refurb Fee
$4.01-$7 Value: $2 Refurb Fee
$7.01-$10 Value: $3 Refurb Fee
$10.01 & Higher Value: $4 Refurb Fee
This information isn't guaranteed by any mean and we are still working on nailing it down.

What are the refurb fees on consoles?
They are listed in the hardware TIV section, highlight in red.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Why didn't the percent bonus go for my accessory for a system that was included?
Unless stated otherwise, and they are rarely included, the bonuses never apply to accessories. Except the EDGE card of course.

I traded in a bunch of games for the "Trade X, get $X bonus" promo and it gave me the percentage bonus instead?
I can't give concretes on why this happens. GameStop computers are normally pretty good at giving you the better promo. In the case of a percentage bonus being run at the same time as a "Trade X, get $X" promo, things can get messy. The system appears to only give one promo on games per transaction so if you had a few games that you want to go to the percentage bonus and a stack for the "Trade X, Get $X" it will regularly apply the percentage to all of the games. Your best bet is to do all "Trade X, Get $X" games in one transaction on their own. The GameStop clerk may say that the system will figure it all out, tell them you want a separate transaction anyway. As always, check your receipt before you leave the store.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
Playstation 2: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller (Must be a DualShock2) *Fat unit requires either back cover or network adapter*
GameCube: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and put a refurb fee on the console. The refurb fee on the console will vary on the price of the console so those numbers will change. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above. They will not, however, take RROD 360 consoles. There may be stores that still do it, but official policy is to not take them in.

What is the difference between PowerUp Rewards and PowerUp Rewards Pro?
The basic card is free and only allows you to acrew points when spending money. The Pro card costs $14.99 and is basically the same as the previous EDGE program.

How much does a PowerUp Rewards Pro subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an PowerUp Rewards Pro card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game, extra 10% off the purchase of pre-owned games and 10% off new strategy guides.

Does the Power Up Rewards Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on. However, if you look at the wordings on promos, they can remove the bonus trade-in value if they decide to.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card. Some will report success, but this requires a manual override and is very YMMV.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards. Some kind of programming that gets input from their system that wont show up when only inputting the number off the back of the card.

Yep. I traded in my 2nd Gen Touch last week and all they wanted was the iPod, no cables.

According to that list it is only $40, actually. I have one of those, too, but thought that wasn't worth trading for $40. I'll do the iPod touch for $75 though! I'm reformatting it as I type.

You da man for this one. Which they had a link like that for games and accessories. The TIVs look the same since I traded in my 2nd Gen 8GB iPod Touch on 12/12 (got $115 w/ $50 bonus). With values holding up like that I would wait until another bonus/SOTW rolls around.

Speaking of GS and iDevices...finally got that refurb iPad 2 (16GB AT&T 3G) I ordered on 12/30 (I know, I know...but it was a $130 cheaper than new and I paid for it all in GS credit). Had a big dent in the lower right corner, chipped chrome on the left side and no SIM card. Seeing that this was a refurb I would have been ok with this, but GS.com now sells "scratch & scuff" iPads for $100 less than the "premium refurbished" one I bought. I called GS CS and they could not locate a replacement in my area and could not guarantee the condition of a replacement if I sent mine in for an exchange. So I said "well since you sent me a unit that is scratched and scuffed just credit me a $100" They stated they couldn't do it since they couldn't verify the damage over the phone. CS rep said she would put notes on my account and if I visited a GS store they could verify the damage and would issue the credit. I did just that, but when the GS employee called CS the rep read the notes, but wouldn't issue the credit. She didn't even know and/or couldn't find anything about the "scratch and scuff" devices on GS.com. Wow! Fine. Since you want to play games I'll just return it. I asked if I could get the credit back on my PUR card since that is how I paid and I didn't want to carry an extra GC. He said he couldn't and since they don't have $530 in cash on hand to give me my only options were GC or credit card. Ok, put it all on my CC. I thought about it afterwards and should have given him a bank check card so it would have been cash in my bank account.

I'll just get a refurb from apple w/ new battery, outer shell and 1 year warranty or see if Target comes back with the $75 GC promo on new ones.

They used to a number of years ago. I think it was it's own seperate site called Tradestop.com or something. That was so convenient, since then you knew how badly you were gonna get fucked BEFORE you went in the store and you could just laugh off even considering them and keep your shit w/o having to go into the store to find out.

I think I vaguely remember that. Was that before the big FuncoLand, EB Games, etc consolidation? I guess it's better business (for them) for you to NOT know the TIVs beforehand. Got to get you in the store and get your back against the wall first.
 
Hah - turns out my old 1st gen iPod touch is a 16gb, so that is $85 instead of $75. I suppose I should quick check Gazelle and some other places, but I doubt I'll get that much for it.

Um, yeah, Gazelle offers all of $19 for one with "normal" wear and tear and slight scuffing but no cable/accessories. With cable/accessories it is a whopping $23.

Yeah, off to GS it goes. Hopefully they take it. The screen is flawless since I had a protector on it. But the kids managed to scuff up the back pretty badly from handling it even though it has always been in a case. Not sure how that happened...

Why in such a hurry? TIVs on these have been pretty stable and you would probably get more with a bonus and slight drop in TIV. I know, I know...can't see into the future, etc, etc, etc.
 
Sold my 1st Gen 32GB iPad Wifi for $380 on ebay. After ebay/paypal fees & shipping probably made about $330 compared to $220 @ GS. No thanks!

Yeah. I think that's why they nuked that site, since they figured once they had customers in the store they're more likely to just say fuck it and trade them anyway.

He just missed that opportunity. Last week's PUR Steal coupon was a 30% bonus on all iPods/iPhones/iPads traded in. I doubt we're going to see another one like that anytime soon.

I got $125 in credit for my 2nd gen 16GB Touch. If I sold it on Amazon, after fees and shipping, I'd be lucky to break $100.

I took advantage of that extra 30% SOTW last week and gave them my 6th gen 8GB Nano for $78. It was a brand new unit that Apple sent me when FedEx mis-delivered my refurb replacement.

BTW, that mis-delivered package mysteriously showed up in my mailbox on Saturday. FedEx driver left his number on a sticky, but when I called him he had no explanation for me of where my package had been for 2 weeks. If I had another 3500 PUR points (had 2520) I would have taken that one to GS for $78 also. Ended up getting $90 for it on craigslist since it had brand new headphones, sync cable and box from the new unit I sold to GS. CL and eBay are flooded with these since everyone is getting their 1st gen nanos replaced by Apple.
 
I had no issue giving my iPhone 3G 8GB to GameStop for $91. ($70 + 30% coupon)

There was dust under the screen, scratches all throughout the back side, iPad baseband 06.15.00 so I can't install a legit 4.2.1 IPSW, and I had the whited00r custom beta firmware, based off the 3GS's 4.3.2, and ran very sluggish after a clean install. 3.1.3 runs decently but barely any current App Store apps run on 3.x, requiring 4.x and up. Could have sold it to anyone here, but then they'd have to deal with it too. Might as well let GameStop do it, while I walk away with a moddable Wii with that credit...

Well, it would have been nice if I saw these posts before I went out and traded it. I was all happy I got $85 for it and now I read this.

But prior to going I saw what little Gazelle was giving for it (about $20) and figured I'd better snag those GS prices while I could. I could see them dropping quite a bit once they get enough of these in. They can't be making much off these prices.

I did think I would get the PUR bonus, but I guess that doesn't apply to these - so that was slightly disappointing but not unexpected. I guess while I've traded accessories and gotten the bonus I've never traded actual hardware (consoles and such) and this would be the same.

I had no fucking idea there was a bonus coupon. Had I known that in combination with how much they gave for them I'd have been all over it. Dammit! (I may have glanced at the deal on CAG and just assumed they gave like $10 for an iPod Touch and filed it away as not a deal - it wasn't till I saw that link posted today that I realized how much they gave for them).

But yeah, I was looking on eBay for how much I could sell a 1st gen 16GB iPod Touch and at best it was $70-$100 prior to fees. So in the best case that would be a few bucks more than I got from GS. Granted, that would be cash and the last thing I really need right now is more GS credit. But just a few months ago I ran out of GS credit so it is never hurts to build it up even if I don't need it right away. I just need to make sure I get something big there that won't be discounted anywhere else (like a Wii U maybe - or the next Skylanders game which is sure to be on the way ;) so that it becomes the equivalent of cash, eventually.

Plus this particular iPod has a very short battery life. It needs to be charged frequently so I was worried if I sold it online I'd have it sent back to me. GS can replace the battery (if that's even necessary) and get more out of it than I could.

Now an iPad would be a different matter. I'd definitely try to sell that as ohboy did with his.

If I wasn't banned from GS I'd probably trade in a few on that list myself since a couple of those I haven't even managed to get to yet and I got them at launch.:cry:

I may have a coupon you can use. When I went ahead and used mine on Sunday, they couldn't ring it up and just gave me a price override instead. I can check my PUR account tonight when I get home from work to see if I still have it as an active coupon, and if I do, I can shoot it your way. :)

I appreciate it, but I already traded in the iPod. If they'll take it retroactively that would be great - but I somehow doubt that, plus the store is 15 miles away so I can't get back up there any time soon. Thanks for the offer though ;).

I got stupid and I started trading in HDMI cables en masse(which were getting around $6 each at the time) to my local GS stores. I traded in 35(out of a 50 pack I bought for $50 shipped on eBay;)) within a week to my local GS stores.

Of course, I stupidly sent their DM a message asking if I could trade in more than the 3-5 I was getting away with at their stores. When confronted on it, I said I was 'upgrading my cables and trading in the old ones.:lol: Yeah. Not exactly my brightest moment in my flipping career.;) I was also doing multiples of various games, whether it was $.48 PSP clearance games from Sears or the free after Gamer's Club coupon games from Best Buy(Fairytale Fights, Nerf bundles, etc).

Funniest shit to me though were the 'infractions' that helped convince them to ban me, such as expecting to get two seperate promotions to run in the same or multiple transactions so I would get the most credit for my fat 40gb PS3 that I was trading in on their $150 guaranteed tiv promo and the 35-40 games I was trading towards a pre-ordered copy of Arkham Asylum promo at the time, which to me were just something that any SMART customer would demand of a chain that takes trades.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Gamestop loves stupid customers who buy a game for $55 one week and trade it back in the next week for $12 with NO promos applied to it so they can resell it for $55 again and make $40 n change.

So while some of the stuff was definitely stupid(multiples at the same store, messaging the DM), if I had broken up my trades I might still be trading there. But with gas at or around $3 a gallon when I started doing multiples and the HDMI cables I just didn't wanna expend that much money running all over creation with the crap.
