These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Is there any way to look at what the previous values reported on a game?
You can search through this thread and previous ones to see what a game has been reported in the past. With the TIV Tracker you can sort by date and then go through the list of past updated values through that as well. Here are the previous GS TIV Threads: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14

Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

I don't want to get hassled about the values I post, how can I get the information out there?
If you do not feel comfortable or willing to put the values in the thread you have two options available. You can input them in the TIV tracker or you can send them to me via PM. Either way the database and these lists will be updated. Putting them into the TIV tracker does save me some time later on.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

What are the refurb fees on games?
There appears to be set prices for set value ranges. We aren't 100% certain on the splits just yet. Here is what we have currently:
$0.25-$2 Value: $0.75 Refurb Fee
$2.01-$4 Value: $1 Refurb Fee
$4.01-$7 Value: $2 Refurb Fee
$7.01-$10 Value: $3 Refurb Fee
$10.01 & Higher Value: $4 Refurb Fee
This information isn't guaranteed by any mean and we are still working on nailing it down.

What are the refurb fees on consoles?
They are listed in the hardware TIV section, highlight in red.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Why didn't the percent bonus go for my accessory for a system that was included?
Unless stated otherwise, and they are rarely included, the bonuses never apply to accessories. Except the EDGE card of course.

I traded in a bunch of games for the "Trade X, get $X bonus" promo and it gave me the percentage bonus instead?
I can't give concretes on why this happens. GameStop computers are normally pretty good at giving you the better promo. In the case of a percentage bonus being run at the same time as a "Trade X, get $X" promo, things can get messy. The system appears to only give one promo on games per transaction so if you had a few games that you want to go to the percentage bonus and a stack for the "Trade X, Get $X" it will regularly apply the percentage to all of the games. Your best bet is to do all "Trade X, Get $X" games in one transaction on their own. The GameStop clerk may say that the system will figure it all out, tell them you want a separate transaction anyway. As always, check your receipt before you leave the store.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
Playstation 2: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller (Must be a DualShock2) *Fat unit requires either back cover or network adapter*

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and put a refurb fee on the console. The refurb fee on the console will vary on the price of the console so those numbers will change. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above. They will not, however, take RROD 360 consoles. There may be stores that still do it, but official policy is to not take them in.

What is the difference between PowerUp Rewards and PowerUp Rewards Pro?
The basic card is free and only allows you to acrew points when spending money. The Pro card costs $14.99 and is basically the same as the previous EDGE program.

How much does a PowerUp Rewards Pro subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an PowerUp Rewards Pro card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game, extra 10% off the purchase of pre-owned games and 10% off new strategy guides.

Does the Power Up Rewards Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on. However, if you look at the wordings on promos, they can remove the bonus trade-in value if they decide to.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card. Some will report success, but this requires a manual override and is very YMMV.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards. Some kind of programming that gets input from their system that wont show up when only inputting the number off the back of the card.

I didn't see this mentioned anywhere, but today I went to buy a PSP 4gb memory stick new from gamestop and when they rang it up it was on sale for $20. Normally its around $30 and it wasn't advertised and none of the employees new about it. They double checked and sure enough the Sandisk 4gb cards are on sale right now.

Not sure how long this will last, but thought I'd share.

Quick question, say if you got a used game and it didn't come with its original case, could you go to another GS that has the game with the original case and ask them if you could have the empty case? Two of the DS games I got today from the B2G1 didn't have their original cases.

For the B1G2 on music games a while back. I got two games at one GS and when i got my 3rd game at another i asked for a case for ACDC Track pack and they guy gave it to me, no issues.

If you guys plan on trading in something and you're using both the guaranteed $30 on one game and the 50% on another don't do them in the same transaction. I ran into problems while trading in Revelations and given the amount of people that were there I didn't fight it. :l
 
I have not seen this mentioned anywhere here yet but at the Gamestops in my area (Portland, OR), they are running a buy 2 get 2 on ps2 games again. Most of the stores in my area still have a large supply left but I know that is not the case everywhere though. Good way to stock up on some Best Buy credit haha
 
Has anyone had issues with getting the 50% bump when trading in, then purchasing a set of 3 games for the B2G1 free in the same transaction, or had issues with the 3/$10 bonus applying instead of the 50%?

I had a problem with this a few weeks ago when the same promo's/sales were going concurrently (50% towards any pre-owned, trade 3/$10, and B2G1); They did everything in the same transaction, and I guess the computer didn't recognize a set of B2G1 games as a 'used game' to trigger the 50% bonus. It ended up reverting to the trade 3/$10 bonus, costing me almost $20 since I had some high value games, and 8 games instead of 9. I went back in and tried to explain to the manager, who I'm usually very cool with, and while he saw where I was coming from, he gave me the typical GS spiel of 'Well the computer gives you the best deal', and tried to reason that I didn't really lose money since I got a game for free (because of the B2G1)! I wrote it off since they've been good to me in the past, but I've got a big trade to do tomorrow, and I want to make sure I get the 50%.

I guess the obvious solution is to tell them I want to trade in games and then purchase games on separate transactions, but once again, what if the promo is not automatic, and the computer for some odd reason gives me the 3/$10 deal instead? Anyone else had similar issues?

The 50% bonus is automatic on buying a used game (some report this one works even without buying a used game during this promo). Scan the trade-ins and then the used game and then everything updates. However, it's generally been a problem getting the 50% promo and the B2G1 promo on the same transaction. If I was doing a 50% trade in during a B2G1, I would buy a $0.99 and get the trade in process done first. Then get the 3 games I wanted and do a return on the $0.99 game. Of course letting the employee know so he doesn't just think you're just trying to get the 50% promo (which he shouldn't give 2 shits about since you would get the 50% regardless of what you bought).
 
Totally tits. So awesome the 3DS prices didn't tank. I'm still contemplating trading in my copy of Motorstorm if the value holds. That's just such a kickass return. But I'm a game collector first and 4.99 was a pretty solid price so I may keep it.
I have one Nintendogs I didn't have enough time to keep. Hopefully the value holds tomorrow.

No need to go through all of this. The 50% is automatic without any purchase. I mentioned it yesterday and verified it again, twice, tonight.

I'm still pissed I went in about a week ago with 6 games and specifically asked and said "if any of these don't qualify for 3 for $10 bonus then please let me know". and when i saw the total ring up it seemed low and I asked him and he's like "no they all went thru fine". of course i didnt think to check the receipt until i got home and realized, surely enough, that one game rang up at $1.50 or something, which cost me $10. and I wouldn't have traded in any of those games had it not been for the $10 bonus. ugh.

So you planned out how much the game was worth and knew what you were going to get and when the price didn't match you not only accepted it, but then decided not to look at the receipt for the trade in until you got home?
 
As always they lowered tons of TIVs for this sale. I kinda wish I hadn't driven out there now, but whatever.

yeah, I had multiple other things going on and shit that I had to do that day, I had it planned out, but took the guys word that the two sets of three gave me two bonuses that they should've. it's not as much his fault as mine for not catching it and fixing it, but at the same time he should've told me since I asked ahead of time and multiple times, I can't babysit these employees every single time I go into the store to make sure things go the exact way I want, I had my brother with me that day too who wanted to look at games and kept calling me over.

am I pissed I lost out on $10 and traded 2 other games I wouldn't have without the bonus? absolutely. do you need to call me out on my mistake that I already mentioned and owned up to? probably not, but you did, lol.

I just don't understand the point of his story. If you plan something out and it doesn't work, you should check and see why it didn't work. It's a teaching moment, man. I'm helping ;)

The only problem with teaching the clerks is that if you do it too much they brand you a picky customer and ban your ass.:cry: Like, for example, when I traded in my 40gb PS3 AND a big fat stack of games when the slim PS3 first came out.

It was EITHER I get the $150 tiv promo for my fat PS3 OR the 50% more trade value promo towards pre-order/purchase of Batman:Arkham Asylum on one transaction and NOT both.

So once I saw this occur, I had the clerks break up the game pre-order trade and the PS3 trade into seperate transactions. Apparently, the local DM doesn't like a smart customer, since that was one of his criteria for my banning.:roll:

So teach all you want, but don't be shocked if you join me in the land of GS banning.;)

As far it was explainbed to me in GS store. The system automaticaly gives you the better deal for trades. Which means. If you trading 3 games and the value of teach of them is less than $6.50 the system will give you $10 extra for 3 games credit. If you trade 3 games and one or more of them have TIV over $6.50 or so the system will give you 50% bonus credit for each game. If you trade 4 games and 3 of them haVE TIV BELOW $6.5 and one above $6.5, than trade the 3 of them separately for extra $10 ctredit, than trade the 4 game with TIV over $6.5 separately for extra 50% credit

I think we would all be really happy if it always worked like that, but unfortunately it often does not, as you can see from this thread anytime there is a promo.
