I was looking at some threads over on xbox.com and quite frankly the comments there about bricked systems after the 10/30 and 11/30 updates are scaring the bejeebers out of me (my system is in an unopened box till Christmas).

Have many of you updated your system with these updates, use component cables, and DO NOT HAVE any resultant problems?

It seems alot of the issues are for VGA connections which I don't have but alot of the people reporting problems use component cables.

I cannot believe that MS would leave a buggy update in place that would brick systems.

I'm sure the unit I picked up at Microcenter next week will need to be updated when I set it up and connect online, but I want to ensure it won't cause the system to be a brick.

Thanks,
TexTuna

I think only a minority suffered problems from the Fall dashboard update. I also think that they released another patch to fix it? I might be (probably am) wrong about this, but I remember hearing Major Nelson's podcast and hearing something about how they fixed the problem like the day after. So no, I don't think MS would just leave a buggy update knowing it has the potential to brick a system.

Yes, you are right - the second patch was on 11/30 but many users are still having problems. The only thing the Major has posted since then is that they are continuing to look into the issues - which likely means there will be an update to the update.

It would appear that many of those people have older units which would mean the new one I have put away should be ok, but there are a few posts about people with recently purchased units having issues.

I'm just happy I purchased the 2 year warranty from Microcenter as MS is trying to make people pay $140 to ship systems back.

I've got a 360 from launch (12:01 at Kmart) using component cables, updated and 0 problems. In fact I've never had any problems with the system. Ever.

Stop making these threads. I really get sick of people saying they are scared...I have had mine since Jan and no problems....You just hear more about the problems than the non-problems

Slickkill, I just spent $400 (not inc MIR for $100 from MC) for my 360 and a few hundred dollars on games - all of which are boxed for Xmas and will not be setup and played for a few weeks.

So PARDON THE HELL OUT OF ME FOR BEING A LITTLE CONCERNED OK?

I did not see ANY SPECIFIC THREADS on this board concerning problems stemming out of the 11/30 update - if there are, then I am sorry I did not see them but my post and my concern stem completely from that issue, not general problems, DRE's, etc. So cool it man.

i had a problem with my system, it broke back in june, called ms, their customer service was good, and i have a new 360, no complaints from me, it was the only thing i ever had a problem with, my new 360 is also working great.

Mine bricked as well but MS was very helpful and sent a coffin to me and it was free to replace. It only took about a week to come back as well. I was very pleased with the service.

I was a victim of the update bricking. My launch 360 finally got the red lights and I recieved my replacement on the exact date that firmware update came out. Ouch! Two weeks later I finally receive my current one and the update went fine.

What sucks is that they fixed the faulty firmware like a couple days after, so if I had waited a couple days to update, i wouldn't have been out a 360 for 2 extra weeks.

My suggestion to you if you are really worried, is to return the unopened 360 you have (yes, I realize it's suppose to be a present). Then repurchase a 360 closer to xmas from a place like circuit city who has a 30 day return policy on opened systems with no restocking fee. Basically all I'm saying is buy your system from a place with the longest and best return policy and then when you update and if it bricks, you won't have to deal with MS because you can just exchange it at the store.

not that i want to support return fraud, but I had a friend who had a launch window ps2 that, 2 years into it's life, showed the disc read error issue. He was able to exchange it for a new one at wal mart without a receipt. The gospel is..save your box and everything that came in it.

quit being so fuckin anal. ANYTIME there is a firmware update, there's always a chance of bricking. it doenst matter if its a cell phone or a console, there's ALWAYS a chance. just because someone wrote about it, it doesnt make it a wide scale dilemna. so get out of your bubble, plug the damn 360 in and play it. its there for fun. have some.

Christ man, people spend $400+ on things and are not so anal like you. How many people spent $2,500+ for a PS3? Think they are shitting themselves over updates?

It is nice to know this community is so supportive and helpfull. They make you feel like your questions are so well received and show so very much respect here.

Great bunch of people.

For those few of you who took the time to respectfully answer my question and not be an ass, I thank you.

[quote name='slickkill77']Ok i understand but look on page two. Everyday people make these same threads and get the same answer. So honestly i think i am speaking for most people Stop with the worry threads...

My system was made Oct 25th. No problems updating. If you open your 360 and it bricks for christmas, just simply exchange it wherever it was purchased, it's not that big of a deal.

Yep, that is my plan if need be but from what I've read, hopefully there won't be any problems. Most of those I've seen report problems are VGA connection users instead of components.

Don't know if they are any good but I bought one of those vertical stands for it that has fans in the bottom to help with cooling. Mine won't be in an enclosed cabinet but ontop of it so I would think I should be fine temp wise.

Thanks,
TexTuna

Just FYI some of these people reporting that the update killed their system are people taking advantage of getting a free repair out of warranty for their faulty system pre-update. I know a few friends in r/l that did this.
