I purchased the card from best buy, but my fiancee threw out the receipt. There's only two or three numbers that are fuzzy. I thought I could guess them, but no luck so far. Can I call MS or am I SOL?

Actually, I had a similar situation. Unfortunately, MS can't do anything for you. Your best bet is to buy another card and exchange the one you have with that receipt. You'll be spending $20 on another card though. This Sunday, Best Buy is having a sale where if you buy any 360 game, you can buy the 1600 point card for $5. Sucks, I know, but unless you can figure out those other letters then you're just out of luck.

BTW, a CAG suggested using Goo Gone on the panel next time. I tried it and it works wonderfully.

I did this a couple weeks ago with a card from best buy. I called Microsoft and they said I was SOL, and to try and take it back. Which I did.

Best Buy will take it back without a receipt, just explain what happened and you want another one.

If you bought it with a credit card, can't they do some backtracking and look up the purchase, assuming they hassle you for not having a receipt.

Yes, actually that's what they did, I forgot until you said it.

Just give them your credit card, if the purchase was made in the last 30 days they can get your receipt.

Wow awesome I just did the same damn thing on my card. I wish I would've saw this topic before I tried to open my ******* card!!!! So I can try to take my card back to Best Buy even if it's been scratched to hell and the package looks like ass?

Yes, If you have a receipt.

This happened to me before when I bought my 12 month card. It's true, you can just return it and exchange. I explained that I scratched too hard and it came off and they were nice enough to let me get a new one.
HOw do they know you didnt just use it and try to exchange it......?
There's another serial number on there if you look in a white box. That doesn't have anything covering it, so it would look shady if the numbers in that become unreadable. Anyway, they can call MS and verify whether or not the card has been used.

They can? I specifically asked about the numbers in that white box when I called them and they said those numbers meant nothing to them.

Those numbers are there to ward off the potential scammers. "I scratched off my pin number (but I already used the code), so please give me another one." Best Buy won't likely know anything about them unless they call up MS and verify the status of the card.

I called Microsoft when I destroyed some of my code while rubbing it off. They said there was nothing that can be done. I brought up the other code in the white box and asked if they could use that to verify that I never redeemed the code. He said all that was, was some serial number that is useless to them.

They're just told to have you deal with the retail point instead of doing it with MS. The retail point then takes the card and they can verify it with MS (not the tech support number we're given) using that number.

fucking SHIT fuck I just did that with my $5 card. Anyone have the first five digits of a card that starts with a J, then I believe a 2, then I think C and the rest is a blur. I have the rest after that. I know "batches" of cards often have the same opening sequence (especially true since I recognize the second set of 5 characters from a card I used last week).

....anyone?

Edit - never mind, I figured it out. Fortunately I only needed to guess on two characters.
