Open box TV at BB?

Samsung 50" DLP. Exactly the TV I've wanted for a few months now. Typically goes for $3,500, sale price is around $3k on average. Open box deal is $2,700 with full warranty. Ten percent of of sale pricce for those uncomfortable with elementary math.

Not sure how hip to the idea of an open box, especially at BB who I hate with a rabid anger, with a sign that says "missing items". I'm guessing it won't have a manual and might not have a remote either. I figure I could get a remote for less than $50 or so from Samsung directly. Or just yoink a floor model from those hateful bastards.

So what do y'all think? Should I go for it? Should I go for it after having just dropped $1,700 on tuition?

With the money you saved get the warranty. Might as well. If they can't fix it they will lemon it and give you a new shiny one FREE.
 
Short answer: No.

Long answer: Absolutely not. There will always be a better sale in the future, and it's not like you NEED a 50" DLP, especially after paying that tuition.
 
Yeah dude if you buy something that expensive dont go half assed and cheap out. You will deffinitly regret it in the long run...

now if I could do some kind of CC price match, or better yet Sears since I hate them jerks too, then I would be all over it. I know they typically won't match on open box or clearance stuff. Then again for something that expensive, especially for the comission jockeys at Sears, they may be willing to do it since summer is a slow time for high dollar electronics.
 
no dont do it, open box missing parts means at BB that someone bought it and returned it with missing stuff to it. they have what they call an empty box shelf where the keep all the display boxes at this was like 5 years ago when my friend worked their could be different know though. I work at radioshack and people worry about buying retail stuff and all we do it unwrapp it and stick it on a shelf, but at radioshack if you buy the demo (floor) model we give you a 2 year warrenty.
never buy sometihng w/o the manual unless you can get the manuel online there will be that feature you will find out about 3 years later when your just messing around.
 
Best Buy is one of the worst companies about the "lemon law". I am currently going through the hassle myself, and just today flat-out told them they better give me store credit 'cause I'm through with their televisions. I didn't want to hassle with getting cash back (that would be terribly difficult), so I've got tons of credit to spend there on Thursday. Here comes a new DVD library....
 
I bought a 36inch flat screen sony tv open box, i don't regret it as i saved 500 bucks i did have to buy a remote for it and download the manual as a pdf but besides that it works great. I do highly suggest getting the extend warrenty because if it's not a MANUFACTURES defect that warrenty they say comes with it doesn't count for anything... so if something goes out because it was a floor model and say some buttons weren't treated nicely and quit working.... well the warrenty won't cover that... so i'd buy the extended one just to cover your ass...

as a note I HATE BEST BUY WARRENTIES and won't ever buy one on a new product, but on a used it's just not worth the chance... you know how best buy customers can be ... beatin stuff up... not to mention the employees.
 
i had bought a 65" inch hitachi TV at circuit city(open box) for like 2500. It was a kick ass deal HDTV and everything. The TV was only 3 weeks old too
 
ALWAYS BUY THE Service plan on Open item crap.


Also remeber this.

They must mark it down by at least 10% from the new price.
And thats if it comes with everything that the new one comes with

When its missing remote/manual etc then it should be even more% off the regualr price of the tv.


ALSO Check the date when the open item tag was made (they are suppose to update it every 1-2 weeks) meaning in 1-2 weeks if it hasnt sold for 3k then they mark it down another 10% to 2700 etc etc


And the day you buy it Ask for another 100-200bucks off the price too.
"hmm well if you can mark it down to whatever then ill buy it today"

They will mark it down for you.


The warrantys are full warrantys

they will come to your home and fix your stuff free parts and labor for 4-5years.

if they have to come out 4 times for 4 different problems that needed repair then they will give you a new one.

I work for bestbuy and am quiting in about 2 months.
So im tempted to buy a new big ass tv because we get huge discounts off them.
The Dlp's are VERY nice. and is exactly what im looking to buy.
 
I would check everything out first. If they used it as a floor model....NO! Floor Models are usually ran ALL DAY and the life of TV has already decreased. Not sure how long a DLP lasts, but I know a Plasma TV will burn out after about 7 years or less, or something like that.

I'm sure you can find a deal somewhere though. I got a 55" Mitsubishi HDTV for under $2,000 and this was when HDTV was just getting big, so the prices were still high. Mits is right up there with top of the line too....I guess it all depends where you look and how fast you need it.
 
funny store, my friend was buyin a 27inch flat screen samsung open box tv. So the Best buy guy was tryin to sell him the warranty caused it was open box. My friend says no, and when the guy goes to pull the tv out, he snap out the cable connector of the tv. He forgot it was hooked up to cable. So he ends up givin my friend a new tv at the same price of the open box tv.
 
to be honest, usually once a month you can get a 10 percent off coupon, there was just one last weekend, the coupon will work with a new tv, not open box, you might as well wait it out and get a new one for the price of the open box
 
i wouldnt buy anything from best buy. i went the other day to get a tv from there, open box. thought the deal was great. 339 for a 27 inch trinitron, then no one came around for about 30 minutes. then it had no controller or manual, so i went to curcuit city and found the same tv for 379. they are horrible there.
 
Sounds like the better question is do you need to spend that much money on a tv at this point in your life. Wether it's an open box product is a moot question. Do you own your own home? If not I'd say save that money for a future down downpayment. Is your auto payed off? If not use that extra couple thou for that, save yourself a lot in interest payments. Does your car shimmy just a little causing a slight annoyance but not so much that you feel like dropping a couple hundred for it to get fixed? If so correct that.

You get the point. If everythings hunky-dory(sp?) and that was gonna be money to be spent on entertainment anyways, then worry about the open box part... of which I can offer no advice better than whats been posted by previous people above me.

Dlp's are definetly worth the price.

We get plasma calls all the time
the bulbs break all the time and i think they are suppose to last 35,000 hrs or 75,000 hrs I cant remember im sure they are a lot better then they use to be a year ago but still I like Dlps over plasma Unless you want it in your wall.
 
I would second the 'hold off' comment. 10% isn't that great a savings [there are always coupons or sales for tv's] especially if there are missing pieces.
You don't know what has happened to the tv, who had it, how long it's been on the floor, etc. Manufacturer's warranty may not apply to open box items. I don't know about DLP, but I know the floor RPTV's are generally run in 'torch mode' which is badbadbad.
Some things I buy used/open box, but if I'm dropping 2k+ on a tv [or anything] I want that security that 'buying new' gets. Unless it's an *amazing* deal, which 10% isn't.
 
If you were buying a 27 inch or 19 inch or something like that it would be a good deal. I got my tv for 95 or something during christmas and the original was 150. I didn't care, it worked. My dad just bought a 9 inch tv with a vcr because the other one we had broke and they had an open box one for 25 less so we took it and got it for 109 but we also had a 10 percent off coupon so we got a good deal. The tv you are buying, I wouldn't.
 
As i said just ask them to knock down the price.

10% off so say it says 3k brings it down to 2700

Its MISSING remote and manual

Ask for another 10% off because of that. 2430

You tell them the price you would pay and they will make it happen more times then not.

Also. A nice line that we like to hear is "Well ill buy the service plan for the tv if you knock down the price"

So you could pretty easily get 25- 30% off.


With a 5 year warranty to back up any problems. There isnt anything to worry about.

I wouldnt buy a 2-3ktv unless you have the money for it.

just get a 32inch tv instead. for 400-800bucks
 
And too answer your two comments about Sears. A) Sears will not price-match open box, B) Most, if not all, Sears Electronics are no longer on commission
 
Well, the car and motorcycle are paid off and they both work great. I don't own my own home, but I'm not throwing money away on rent either. Tuition is dirt cheap at the moment.
The tv goes beyond my fun budget, but I tend to blow past that one at least twice a month.
