The big review in this month's OPM seems to echo the reviews that FFXII got from Famitsu earlier this year with a perfect 10/10.

Even though they've given every PlayStation Final Fantasy game a perfect score (not include the compilations), this reviewer, Thierry "Scooter" Nguyen, has never reviewed any of them for the mag. He gives his own mini-reviews for each of them along with FFIV (which he says is his overall favorite title at 10/10 and says that there's random references to the game in XII), which are all pretty much right around the 8/10 range.

He even starts off the review with his initial doubts about the game when he first heard about how different it would be from the previous games. Scooter just gives it a glowing review and you can tell that he loved every part of the game in the review.

The game seems to be getting rave reviews from all around the world, with a 9.5 from PSM as the only other US review that's out.

October 31 cannot come soon enough. Isn't this the first year that a Final Fantasy title and a Zelda title will go head-to-head for the Game of the Year awards? Throw in Gears of War, Oblivion, and probably some other titles and this has been one of the best years for gaming since 2004.

I hated the demo's battle system, so I'm probably going to skip this, Final Fantasy and all as it is.

And BTW, it's already been leaked.

Battle System Sucks. I can't seem to work around it in a way I want. The Computer has this stupid Gambit system which is so bad also. The game is good and all , but not as good if I can control all my characters the way I want. It's still Final Fantasy in a way , but not a 10/10 Final Fantasy maybe an 8/10 one.

And to Spades22 Zelda all the way is going be better then this. Zelda will be amazing.

y'all are on crack. the battle system is so much more fun than the other FF games.
Watching is "so much more fun" than playing?
you control your main character and you use gambits to control the other guys. its not like you just sit there.

yeah, it's way more fun to me. The new system keeps the game interesting since you don't have to constantly stop for the battle intro, the win pose, the outro, the exp and item tally etc. it's more immersive

my only complaint is that you can't choose who to control at any time, but I'll get over that.

I Personally loved FFX's system... (What you do effects how soon your next turn comes (ie, your turn comes faster if you use an item then if you used a spell... etc). Still, Oct 31st can't come soon enough fo rme!

So out of 2005 and 2006, 2006 is one of the best? :p

God what an awesome year. I cant wait to pick this up. I wish I was rich so I could stay home and play the hell out of all these great games.

Aparently these guys haven't played an RPG like Star Ocean before. In Star Ocean, you can control what your other charactors do on the field too...same thing...

What do you mean you have no control on who you use at any time? You use the d-pad to switch between your three characters at any time.

I agree about the battle system being more active and interesting than the "active time battle" that the series has seen since FFVII.

:whistle2:s No, you missed the 2004 part of that equation. ;) Even just the holiday season of 2004 had more top notch games that most years before that even had for the whole year. 2001's probably another year with that kind of calibur in games.

The demo is what I'm waiting to see if OPM will include on a demo disc soon(much like they did FFVIII back in '99). Cause the battle system doesn't sound like something I'd like, but want to try the demo just to make sure.

Chrono Trigger's battle system should have been where the FF series should have evolved to. FFVII was the same ol' system, and the absense of unqiue characters gameplay-wise didn't help it. FFVIII almost achieved something new but was too different and experimental (FFX was what the FFVIII battle system should have been). Now, FF series should evolve into something dynamic, similar to White Knight demo. Bringing FFXI MMORPG battle system will only cause more McDonaldization (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McDonaldization) of the series.

The battle system is fun and you can use the Gambit system and have the party members do what you tell them to do. FFXII is the FFVIII for the PS2 you either love it or hate it. I am on the love it side just like FFVIII. Anyone that has been addicted to FFXI will love it and most closed minded/or casual RPGers will probably not like it.
Chrono Trigger's battle system should have been where the FF series should have evolved to.
I'd say that FFX was kinda close to that, aside from enemies being on the map. Most of the battles happened in the exact place where they started. For example, the fights on the highway. Walk forward, guys are shot into the road, and BOOM, wavy transition into a battle that looks exactly like what happened on the field.

And Chrono Trigger still owns.

Ohhhhhhh...I've only played a downloaded japanese version, so I didn't catch that.

well shit-- FFXII kicks the crap out of the previous 3-D FF battle systems.

I'm sure this battle system thing will be a huge source of controversy when the game comes out
I'm sure this battle system thing will be a huge source of controversy when the game comes out
It's been a central argument since the original demos came out... I don't know, like a year ago?

I have it PO but I might change my mind. Is it worth $10?

And its ... well I'm guessing 10 dollars more than it will be at release from the looks of your post? Also do I have to preorder to get it?

Yes $60 for Collectors Edition only @ Ebgames and Gamestop or $50 for regular edition. I don't know about the preorder but it dosen't hurt to PO you can always get your money back if you change your mind.
..and this has been one of the best years for gaming since 2004.
Personally, I thought 2005 was a great year for gaming simply because there weren't any blockbusters (save RE4, maybe). Lots opf publishers took advantage of this and released either quirky or unique titles, such as Phoenix Wright or Shadow of the Colossus. If either of those were released this year, I doubt they would have sold nearly as much.

I have played some of FF12 and I did not like 10 or 8 and this is the best one maybe maybe 6 is better but this one WOW.

I've only played FF9 lol, and a bit of 7 but the graphics hurt my eyes too bad I couldnt play through it. I wanna try FFX next, then FFX2, then FFXII. What is FFXI? Is it like an mmorpg?

any reviewer giving the game a less than prefect score will get the reply "the game got 40/40 from Famitsu. Western reviewer doesnt know anything"

MMORPG? K I'll pass...don't got the time lol. Oh well I'll just skip FFIX...I wonder why they'd include it as the Final Fantasy series name as its so different.
I hated the demo's battle system, so I'm probably going to skip this, Final Fantasy and all as it is.

I agree. I HATE the battle system. This will be the first time I will skip a FF.
I didnt get a demo disc this month. Am I the only one?
I don't think Sony or SE is sending out demos. The demo is included in Dragon Quest VIII.

You know, I've had DQVIII almost since it came out and I've yet to even try the FFXII demo. I really gotta do that before it comes out. I do have it preordered after all, I better be sure the game's actually worth the cash I'll be dropping on the CE

Yeah, same here. And don't tell anyone, but I've never played any FF game 8-[.

I've got X but I just haven't had time for it. I guess I'll just jump right into XII - at least I won't have any of the expectations that you guys all have based on prior games. I'll just experience it for what it is.

I've completed DQ VIII, Suikoden V, and Grandia III this year. I'm also nearly done with Tales of Legendia. Which one of those is standard FF most like (I know, not Legendia)?

FFXII is just as turned based/ATB as the rest of the FF games it just has a pseudo-effect that makes it seem like it isn't. The only difference when you get down to the nitty gritty is; no loading to a different screen for battles, you can move freely and the cosmetics.

this is the first time i've had a playstation1/2 when a FF game is dropping, i've got the CE preordered and am looking forward to never playing it, i'll grab a GH copy way later to play

Dragon Quest VIII, definitely.

Personally, everything DQ does FF does better, but

I actually prefer Grandia to Final Fantasy's battle system

I've been testing the final "beta" also... the potential is there to be the best one.. I'm liking it alot

I loved the new battle system. What's funny is that when you look under the hood, it's still turned based and it's not that different from previous games. Also you are aware you don't have to use gambits right?
