OPM: "Final Fantasy XII is the best Final Fantasy on the PlayStation"
What do you mean you have no control on who you use at any time? You use the d-pad to switch between your three characters at any time.

I agree about the battle system being more active and interesting than the "active time battle" that the series has seen since FFVII.

:whistle2:s No, you missed the 2004 part of that equation. ;) Even just the holiday season of 2004 had more top notch games that most years before that even had for the whole year. 2001's probably another year with that kind of calibur in games.
I seriously doubt we will ever get a year half as good as 2001. But this year is getting there (to the half-way point).

what came out in 2001? (sorry, I don't usually pay attention to these things)
what came out in 2001? (sorry, I don't usually pay attention to these things)
Final Fantasy X, Grand Theft Auto III, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, SSX Tricky, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, etc. Brings back fuzzy memories :D

Best year for me was 2003..

I finally got a PS2, went through Xenosaga Episode I, was blown away, went through Final Fantasy X, was very impressed, played them both again, and realize those $200 were all worth it...
Not at all. I actually thought the battle system felt like KOTOR's.
I agree with that and was happy about it. Just now finally played the FFXII demo that came with DQ and I like the Gambit system. It's probably there to help out turn-based n00bs like me, but I liked it. Didn't take away any of the fun for me. At least no more so than any other type of turn-based system. I think I'll leave my preorder in tact and FFXII will become the first FF game I really play.

EDIT: Wrong info.
Final Fantasy X was December 2000.
It did not come out 2 months after the PS2 launched, it came out the fall of 2001. Look more closely.

And Saurusagi, we're not talking about the best year of gaming that you played, but just when the best games came out.
It did not come out 2 months after the PS2 launched, it came out the fall of 2001. Look more closely.
You're right. I know some sites have mistaken it for coming out January of 2002 (in fact I think EGM cited that as the release date in the review), but it was actually December 2001. I was a year off.

OT, but 2005 was the best new millenium gaming year to date. Shadow of the Colossus and Guitar Hero. Those two alone made the year great.
I've always believed it's the same thing
Apparently you never learned to read sarcasm, though, for all of your strategic thinking that RPGs require. The argument I was refuting, that FF12 is "watching" and previous games are "playing", is what you just wasted too much time arguing.

However, having been playing RPGs since the original Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, I'd have to rebuke your argument that RPGs require more thought or strategy. Sure, strategy games like your FFT and your Fire Emblems require a lot of foresight and strategy, but I haven't had to do more than repeatedly press the X button and attack to win a non-boss battle (aka most of the game) in any Final Fantasy game.

So when you get a full party going and are fighting a large group of enemies...it's almost like an RTS. except that gambits usually take care of most issues. the only thing is when you get poisoned or blinded, then you have manually take care of that. And sometimes healing gambits don't work.

Yeah Fall of 2001 was an awesome for PS2. My favorites where Devil May Cry, Grand Theft Auto III, Ace Combat 4, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3, SSX Tricky, Metal Gear Solid 2, Final Fantasy X, Capcom vs SNK 2, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. Twisted Metal Black.

I think the PS2 got cheated out of a true Final Fantasy game. Final Fantasy XI shouldn't have been part of the official Final Fantasy line. It should have been an off shoot game like Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy X-2. Final Fantasy XI was not accessible because of the high price for the included HDD, Network adapter, and you need a broad band connection. So we really got only two traditional Final Fantasy games on the PS2.

I loved THIS year actually more than any previous year to date for PS2. If someone had asked me if the PS2 RPG lineup was as good as the PS1 or SNES prior to this year, I'd have said no. Now I'm inclined to say "yes" based on the releases this year alone. But on the whole, I can honestly say I feel it was just as good.

BTW, FFXII kicks major ass. Is it the best FF game yet? It's far, far, FAR too different from the others to universally acquire the title of "best". But if those differences click with you like they did with me, it very well may be. Moreover, I'm not one to do a whole lot of side stuff, but still fairly easily sidetracked, and this game is MASSIVE. Never spent more than a hundred hours on a single quest until this one, and I've been playing them for so long I should be buried.

Just letting you guys know my GS stopped taking preorders of the standard edition today. We're full on preorders. Not sure if this is true at other stores.

Don't know if this is posted already as i didn't read the whole thread but i got the new Game Informer today and it got a 9.25 and a 9.5. Game of the Month.

Shit, I was afraid it would be huge. I only took five days off for it...

100 hours? Crap my neither most I ever spent was like 50...thats nuts. It'll make a great summer game thats for sure.
dont listen to those people judging from the demo, or doesnt have the brains to work the system out.
Also don't judge the game from the FF fanboys who would eat shit if SE told them too.

and did anyone else mention this game is a good bit HARDER than other FF games. a good thing for sure :bouncy: that queen mimic was a bitch!

yep, everyone and every reviewer that has played the game so far is an FF fanboy, the game is really worse than Superman 64!

This game reminds me of Vagrant Story (good thing), probably because it's made by the same people. I'm glad it's got a more mature story than FFX.

This game better be worth the 90+ bucks in credit I'm paying for the CE game and guide.

I mentioned that some of the voice actors got to me....well, now all of them do. The accents fit with the world, but they all have different kinds of accents...it's strange. and then there's Vaan who just sounds like an angry suburban teenager (I expected no less of course.)

Except Fran...she has the weirdest voice so it's cool when she talks.

Also true. I died at least several dozen times, probably close to triple digits here. It doesn't have to be of course. But if you're running around between towns, don't know exactly where you're going, decide to fight as many things as possible, and pick a fight with something you shouldn't have.....yeah, you're dead. Try a level five mob hunt twenty hours in? You're dead. Go up against one of many of the optional bosses? If he has regen and you don't know exactly what to do, you're dead.

It's simply very easy to get ahead of yourself in this game. You have access to plenty of things that are stronger than you, unlike other RPGs where they hold your hand and don't let you go up against stronger monsters. And of course you'll be inclined to try your luck every now and then, sometimes even yielding positive results, but often death. Still, I kind of like that sort of thing. I found myself doing the, "Did he cast thundaga? Oh crap! Run!" between towns fairly often. But I like to try my luck every now and then.

I actually didn't find the difficulty of the game to be that hard, both my brother and I have been playing it and we haven't been wiped out at all.

It gets pretty cheesy later on if you want to defeat rank VII hunt monsters etc lol... where you just unleash the mist quickenings all day... but it gets the job done. Besides, if I get in a fight where it's like OMG WTF, I flee and come back stronger.

That's just me though.

hmmm...do a lot of boss fights come down to cast your most powerful spell/heal over and over?

Nope... I just attack all day and have gambits set to heal me when I dip to 50%. I have one character with priority 1 on healing the other to target party leader's target.

The game gets MUCH easier when you get the better spells(Fira, Blizzaga, Thundara, Cura/Curaga, Esuna) and find the areas where you can level up all day.

I will say this though, the hunts do provide good challenge, especially the higher ranked ones.

Grinding isn't that bad later on either as there are both double XP and double LP items to aid you. :)

Yeah I've heard the hunts are sweet.

I don't find the difficulty to be THAT hard. Especially compared to games like VP2. Just that its not stupidly easy like most of the FF games of recent memory.

I can't imagine playing through this one without dying at least a dozen or so times. Surely you get a little bold and took a swipe at the bomb boss, or took your new stone down to the shrine's basement, or tried to take out the first wall a little early. And maybe you thought you did decent enough on one of them to give it a second try, and a third. Or went on a mob hunt and decided you COULD run, but you haven't accomplished anything, so you'll just die and/or reset and give it another go. Dying is a very natural thing in this game, and this coming from someone who's keeping pretty overpowered. Not a lot of story bosses I've died on.

If I'm venturing between towns and get in trouble though, I'm not THAT dumb. I haul it. I run like crazy. But if I decide to fight someone who takes out my current team but looks to be hurting, damn it, I'm going to avenge those three. Or die trying ;)

Yea, it's nowhere near as easy as any of the recent FFs for sure.

I mean if most ppl try to play it like a regular RPG, they would find it difficult. You can't jump into swarms of mobs... you gotta kinda treat it like an MMO especially later. Drag out an enemy and fight him on one side and try not to aggro the others(which can get you killed quick in later dungeons)...

But once you got that down, it's cake. Just gotta know when to fight, and when to flee.

Great piece of advice. For most of this game I was really reminded of FFXI especially with regards to this one aspect. I am not one who thought all these recent FFs were ez hell some have been dang hard for me atleast (at parts) but this one is atleast on par with them. I have not got to a fight where I had to fight something again and again just to beat it the first time like I did in FFX . But I do think its possible and I am not all that far into it yet.

Totally agreed there. You've gotta pick them off and mob them. If you're swarmed by five baddies, it can be damn near impossible to keep up with the fight. Sometimes you even have to watch the map movements and wait for the right time when they're a little isolated. Teammates can be dumb as holy hell and move right into another baddies range. And the high flying monsters can get you canned quick if you let your team chase them around. It's not hard in an impossible manner (at least the main game part of it, where I believe I've yet to die on a forced linear story boss myself), but you can't be rash, and you'll probably be resetting now and again saying "I...uhh...probably better do this mob hunt later.....yeah...."

I really look forward to hearing the comments on this games difficulty. Wonder if this game scares off some of the lesser experienced mainstream players really quick.

What I usually did if the place was really crowded with mobs... I would take two players out and run in there solo, get their attention, then run back then bring the rest of the party back in.

Some of the mob hunts are seriously insane... one took over an hour long lol.

I cant seem to play the game when i start it up and says plz connect
