The original Xbox cannot play back DVD movies w/o this dongle/remote. In this case, controllers are not an option (unless you mod the Xbox).

And more importantly, these dongles (teehee), are great for XBMC/htpc and even standard PC remote controls.

Exactly my use for it (though I bought it years ago). Harmony software has exactly the right command presets to use, and it works flawlessly.
