From Wikipedia.....

Outland is an upcoming platform video game developed by Housemarque and published by Ubisoft. The game was first demonstrated at Penny Arcade Expo 2010 and combines elements of top-down shooters like Ikaruga with classic two-dimensional platform gameplay. Outland is expected to be released in April 2011 for PlayStation Network (major fail) and Xbox Live Arcade.

I'm loving this so far guys! It might be my favorite downloadable game since Shadow Complex...and that is saying a lot! At only 800 ms points, its a pretty good deal!

That review is great and it deserves every bit of its praise. In some ways it beats out Shadow Complex as an ode to Metroid. The soundtrack fits the game well and the art style is amazing! I even bought the premium theme just now which is stunning might i add :applause:

I'm getting my ass kicked in the third area....you have to play it just like a bullet hell shooter...which is insane and awesome at the same time! :hot::drool::hot:

Put about an hour in so far--played through the first boss.

Loving it so far. Good level design, good use of the dark/light sprit, big maps. Highly recommend it to fans of Metroid/Metroidvania/Shadow Complex type games.

I was going to hold off, but this definately has me intrigued now (and I haven't even tried the demo yet).

I only have a PS3 and had been waiting to get this game. Now that I see you guys talking about it and some good reviews, I cant wait for Sony to get off their ass and fix PSN.

DLed the game yesterday night. Hope to get a couple hours in with in over the weekend. There needs to be more other genre/shump games. Only ones I can think of are Red Star, Knights in the Nightmare, and now Outland.

I'm pretty stunned by the video I just watched and the fact that this snuck up on me like that. Off to d/l the demo in a few minutes.

Really awesome art style and I love the Metroid-Vania feel. Only fought one boss so far but damn it looked freaking spectactular.

Played up through the 2nd boss last night. That boss was a lot trickier than the first.

Absolutely loving the game. Very pleasant surprise that this game came out of nowhere.

Picked up Outland this afternoon and played thru the 2nd boss and also an arcade level. I am loving this one. Well worth the price of admission. This one could have easily launched at 1200 space bucks.

Platformer + Bullet Hell = Outland ;)

Yeah, I played some more tonight, up through the third boss now. Haven't checked out the arcade levels or co-op stuff yet.

Definitely loving it, great game and great value at 800pts as you note.

The arcade levels are basically the story levels played against a clock and for points. The only reason I wanted to get one done was to post up a score on the leaderboards and activate my first achievement. I thought it was kind of strange playing for 2 hours and not getting a single achievement :)... I ended up getting the "defeat a boss without getting hit" cheevo during that arcade run too.

I am up to the third boss now. That spider is nuts! I am loving this game!

Anyone try out the 5 special co-op levels yet? I don't have gold at the moment, but I can see how co-op could be a lot of fun. Pretty cool you can even play co-op thru the story mode arcade levels.

Heard about this game from one of the hosts of Gamesradar's podcast Talkradar. Wow I'm liking it a lot, great art style and I might play the Tron Legacy soundtrack while playing this as well (it totally fits).

Glad to hear you are enjoying it Spy... I am still on the Level 4 boss. I haven't had a chance to play it since last week due to Castlevania HD taking up most of my gaming time.

I would love to try out the co-op levels after I finish up the main game... Let me know if you would be down to do a run-thru with me.

Tried the demo awhile ago and it's fun. It's something new and different. Not a lot of whole originality but hey, for the price and what's being offered it's well worth it. How's the online co-op though? I'll buy it later, gotta get ms points.

It's "new and different", but also unoriginal? You're confusing me. ;^) I downloaded the demo but haven't tried it yet.

The only thing that's really new is having the "bullet hell" with the color switching of Ikaruga in this type of game.

Otherwise it's very much in the Metroid/Metroidvania mold, so I get what he's saying it as other than the bullet hell stuff it feels very much like one of those games. If you like those types of games, you should love this. Conversely, if you're not a fan of those types of games, this one doesn't add enough new to change your mind.

I think I'm probably nearing the end. I'm pretty far in the 4th area and have all the powerups now. So I'm guessing I just have a bit more of that area until the boss, and then on to some final area and boss. I'm right at 6 hours played so far (timer counts retrying bosses etc.).

I beat the single player just now. The last boss is a real bitch. I probably spend around 3.5 hours trying to get past it between last night and this afternoon.

I'll put some tips in spoilers below incase anyone else sucks and has major problems with it!

First wave you can just stay at the bottom and wait for the pods to come around. It takes longer than jumping around to them, but you can be pretty sure not to lose any health in the first wave that way.

Start of the second wave use the energy shield (the power that sucks in the energy bullets and shoots them out in all directions) and you can take out about half the pods right away. Then work around and use it again if there are a few near you. Otherwise head up to the top and wait for he long ones to come by, and then drop down and wait on the close ones.

Third wave--again use the energy shield right at the start. Then move around and use it again. Hopefully you have enough energy to take them all out with the energy shield shots as they're bunched together more here and if you have 3 or 4 energy shots left you can wipe them all out that way.

In between the waves it's just a matter of being patient and taking your openings to hit the sisters (when the opposite color energy shield is in front of them so you can switch to that color and hurt them without getting hurt by the shield). Just have to be very cautious and patient on these parts, especially the final time as the window in the energy shield when you can strike is pretty narrow. But those parts are pretty easy compared to taking out all the pods in waves 2 and 3.

This is the reason I love Outland and Shadow Complex. If you're going to borrow form other games, use a good one and they did.

Agreed. I'm very much a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it mold."

Hell, I'd honestly have enjoyed Outland more if it was more of a pure Metroidvania rip off and didn't have the bullet hell stuff mixed in as that just really ramped up the difficulty in the latter part of the game and lessened my enjoyument of it osme.

it's unoriginal in a sense because as the review I read stated it felt like it had a few elements from other games combined into this, but to me it feels new and different. Best thing to do is download and play the demo for yourself and decide. I'd recommend it and to me, it's good gameplay, graphics and online co-op is always fun too.
