Overhyped piece of...

I agree shadowsfallen82 about sports games being overhyped, especially with EA's "add a feature, take away a feature" mindset. With the money they spend licensing songs they could at least improve the gameplay once in awhile.

They hardly get overhyped, there's not enough time in between releases to attain overhyped status. Hell, barely anyone gives a shit about the next Madden until mid-July anyway. Magazines and message boards are hardly overflowing with "NEXT YEAR'S MADDEN WILL OWN YOU" type of discussions.

Overhyped is something like Daikatana, that was covered on and off for it's 80-year development time, then came out to critical and consumer chagrin. If Duke Nukem Forever actually makes it out, it may qualify for this type of list, though its development time may have outlasted the hype it started with. THAT is an accomplishment, indeed.

Halo, totally. Bought it, beat it, enjoyed it to an extent, but it doesn't deserve anywhere NEAR the amount of praise that it gets. Not a bad game, but overhyped? Yessir.

State of Emergency should've been on there, not too high, but on there.

They mostly got it right. Exceptions:
-DKC was hyped because of the graphics, which it delivered in spades. It never promised revolutionary gameplay.
-Shenmue was exactly what it was supposed to be. The gameplay isn't for everyone, but no one said it would be.
-MGS2 had a disappointing story and characters, but it did a good job of expanding on the gameplay the original began, and, while short, was probably twice as long as the original. Those expecting a good story were disappointed, but (for most of us, at least) story in a video game is like a good plot in a porno film - it adds enjoyment to the experience, but isn't the reason we're playing/watching.
-Blasto. I don't remember the hype on this one. It did get a little attention after Hartman was murdered, but not mountains of hype like the others on the list got.

I HIGHLY disagree that DKC was overhyped. It was a fun game. I don't like alot of platform games but DKC was an exception.

You make a good point. They really don't get overhyped. But they get praised even though they don't change much, at least the ones I see.

I agree with Metal Gear Solid 2 and Enter the Matrix. I knew that there was no way Fable was going to live up to the hype, so I am not really all that disapointed by it (except that Ive heard it only takes 15 or so hours).
They forgot to add:

Halo
Halo2
Kotor
Snake eater
killzone
Halo wasn't really overhyped until after it was released and I dunno who you're listening to but Snake Eater has not really got too much hype other than of course being a MGS game. Konami has remained pretty tight-lipped about it and the gaming media hasn't gone after it as much as they did for many of the games on this list.

They forgot "Irritating Stick" for PSX. The most hyped game of all TIME!!!!!

Seriously the list is okay, but disagree with DKC and Shenmue.

1) State of Emergency - damn, was I upset when I bought this one blind.

2) Brute Force - serious hype an otherwise very bland game.

3) Metal Gear Solid 2 - I felt like I watched it more than played it.
SOA was overhyped but did anyone play the mult-player in the xbox version? Very fun.
SOA = Skies of Arcadia?

Ohhhhhhh...... Makes sense

I can agree with some of their opinions...and GOD ALMIGHTY disagree with some of their decisions.

=0 I mean, as for DKC...That should NOT be there. Back in the old days...WHich company wouldnt throw around terms like 'PARALLAX scrolling, mirrored surfaces, mode 7!, to promote their damn games..Donkey Kong was great because it was fun..and the real time team play addition was a fantastic bonus.

Its ok to say a game is overhyped when reviewers suck up to the game big time for no reason despite the fact it SUCKS.

...Id say the first bloodrayne deserves the n.1 spot. I freaked out from how misleading the reviews of the game were-and how much attention they gave the game. I thought it was 100% average-and im sure that some people agree with that.

Shenmue overhyped??
About 80% of gamers probably haven't even heard of it, how is that overhyped...
And what the hell is a Daikatana or whatever it is...
I never heard of it, and that's overhyped????
I do have to agree with MGS2, but I don't really think they can put Fable in there yet, I haven't really played too much of it, and I really didn't enjoy it too much, but other than initial reports, I don't remember it getting all that much hype...
I'd say Final Fantasy VII is the most overhyped game ever, and it didn't even crack the top 10...
I mean you still have idiots talking about it day in and day out, as if they were in the game themselves, maybe they should be...

John Romero has his own island with a hidden base and helicopters? That's F-ing cool. Does anyone have any more info on that?

First, seeing Fable surprised me. When I first heard it was an RPG, I paid no attention to it, as RPG's are a little 'slow' for my tastes. After hearing the recent hype, I bought it and am loving it.

But I do agree with MGS2, Enter the Matrix, etc.

I'd also like to add my 14-10

- Blinx - Not a bad game, but not the flagship title it was billed as.
- Price of Persia - Another good game, but it's a fancy Tomb Raider with repeative fighting.
- Medal of Honor: Rising Sun - I heard about how the designers were traveling all over, trying to make an accurate FPS. What the hell happened? Did they get lost in Amsterdam?
- Madden 200X- Every year this game is advertised to the moon. But it seems VERY similar to the game of last year and the year before. Hype must be making people drop $50 on a slight remix of last years leftovers.
- Doom 3 - I actually haven't played this myself, but the 7 or 8 friends that have it, claim it's not nearly as good as claimed. The main problem, they say is Doom 3 isn't a 100% balls-out shooter, but a shooter with a quest game now. Blah...
- The Sims: I don't see the fun in getting a virtual job, so I can pay the virtual rent, and take a virtual piss, when I do the same things in real life. I play games to do things I could NEVER do in life, like piloting an A-10, and walking through Vice City, killing people with a rocket launcher.
I'm the same way with movies. People hype them up before they come out (Like Star Wars Episode 1).I never go into a theatre expecting to see the greatest movie of all time. I go to be entertained, and if I am, then I walk away happy. There is nothing that is so great that it demolishs everything that came before it.
My thoughs exacly. I wen there to be entertained.

I agree with the person who mentioned State of Emergency... it was supposed to be so amazing since it was a Rockstar game

How about Brute Force... as shown with Fable this year... and Halo 2... Microsoft knows how to hype something up to the point where we are expecting something revolutionary

I think Halo 2 will be a great game... but nothing more... certainly not what they are hyping it to be

I disagree with MGS2 and Shnmue. I mean to me , they did live up to the hype.
IMO-MGS2-Best game overall i have ever played(maybe not favorite)
Shenmue-An instant classic and probably best game on Dreamcast. You have to play it for like an hour before it gets good and once you do its amazing.

Except PoP actually controls well unlike Tomb Raider, although I agree with the repetitive fighting, but IMO platforming doesn't get any better than PoP.

Actually I would add all Tomb Raider games to my list, terrible akward controls.
