Hey, I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, if not, please help me move it, thanks!

I brough my PAL version of Genesis (called Mega Drive) with me to the US, but now I found out I cannot play it with my current (cheap) TV... So I want to know if anyone in the US knows if the newer TV are compatible with NTSC and PAL? Most if not all TV in Australia/New Zealand can handle both NTSC/PAL... is that the case here in the US also?

Do I need a new TV or do I need to find a NTSC Genesis?

Thanks for the help!

Some US tvs will convert, but not all, you'd have to check for the specific model of tv your considering.

A cheaper alternative may be to get a VCR, or DVD player that converts, and then hook up your megadrive thru that. I know APEX makes some cheapy (sub $80) dvd players that autoconvert pal/ntsc signals. I have an Apex dvd player that I use to play some UK Ali G dvds I have. If you hook that to your tv, and then the megadrive into the video ins on the dvd player, that would probably work. I hope you also have a power converter.

i hope your talking dvd recorders, as regular dvd players don't have inputs...( your constantly mention dvd player)

also, i have seen pal to ntsc converters for sale at best buy and radio shack (it's been a long while though) so you may want to try that route.

Thanks for the reply... if only I brought over an old video recoder... I don't really want to spend $50-$100 for a recoder or converter when I can just buy an old NTSC Genesis ($25)... Just pitty I spend $15 buying the AC and RF... I am such a dumb ass...

but the NTSC Genesis won't play your PAL games.

here are some options:

#1- research! ask on one of those international DVD-movie forums about what people in the US are using for their PAL VHS videos. get the model ##.

go to a thrift store or used TV/electronics store (the more ghetto the better)
or call around these places (ebay works) to get ahold of one or one similar.

my wife bought a VCR which was both NTSC & PAL in 1995 for $100. (its in Spain right now and i dont know what brand it was. sorry!) im sure if you do a little ebay hunting you can find one for under $50. most VCRs even new in box sell for $20 or less.

#2- **probably your best bet** buy an NTSC/PAL converter box. this is a box which you hook up your VHS, DVD, or game system to one end, and
it will output either NTSC or PAL. these used to be mucho $$$ in the 90s, but im sure if you go to a movie tech store in NYC Chicago or LA (B&H in Manhattan is a good stop for the east-coaster)
you can probably cop one for $100 or less.

#3 EBAY! you will definetly get more $$$ selling your megadrive in the US versus Europe. You could probably get enough cash to buy an NTSC genesis & all the games you loved... if they were available stateside!

Well you can buy a tv tuner for your pc and that should be able to display PAL, NTSC, pretty much anything. You should be able to buy em for $20 or so.

Yup I just checked Newegg and they're selling some for $17.99. Also if you do get one I suggest using DScaler as your tv viewing program.
